Nyanga Cluster Police under the command of Major General Robbie Robberts apprehended 335 suspects during the week as from 2015-03-23 until 2015-03-30.

From Friday evening until Sunday morning there were operations at all 6 stations. Vehicle control points were done to search vehicles for dangerous weapons, firearms and unlicensed vehicles. Continuous stop and search, wanted suspects, and shebeen operations were also done.

5 firearms were recovered in Nyanga, Manenberg Lansdowne, Athlone and 6 suspects were apprehended. Suspects were arrested for various crimes such as murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, business robbery, house robbery, hijacking, sexual offences, crime against woman and children, stolen properties, possession of dagga, dealing in liquor, possession of suspected stolen property, dangerous weapons and possession of unlicensed fire-arm and ammunition.

Ten stolen vehicles were recovered in Phillipi-East, Manenberg, Nyanga, Guguletu and Athlone, 26 wanted suspects were apprehended during 6 tracing operations. 6ty 6 houses were searched for drugs and 248 8 suspects were apprehended. 25 and forty vehicle control points was conducted, 55 traffic fines were issued to the total value of R37 600 and 5 suspects were apprehended. Fifty 6 shebeen operations were conducted and 12 suspects were apprehended. Nine hundred and ninety one spaza shops were visited and 5 suspects were apprehended.

All suspects will appear in different Magistrate Courts for various crimes committed

Motorists alerted to increased risks of vehicle attacks on R300 near Cape Town

The Arrive Alive website received an alert which was sent in social media to members of an anti-truck hijacking group:

“High Risk Area report: Kindly note that – there has been an increase in vehicle attacks on the R300 highway in Cape Town.

If you have operations in the area, consider alternative routes at night. While most attacks seem to be aimed at light motor vehicles, the risk could easily extend to commercial operations. In the latest attack, last night, a huge rock was thrown through a car’;s windshield, striking the driver and dislocating his shoulder.

He initially stopped but had to grit and bear it and drive off when 3 suspects came running towards him.”

It has been a good day for the member attached to provincial command centre when 13 suspects were arrested yesterday( Wednesday 2014-11-19) during an operation clamping down on stolen vehicles and hijackings.

During patrols and by following up information a total of 10 suspects between ages 19 and 52 years were arrested for being in possession of stolen vehicles. Six vehicles stolen in Lentegeur, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Bothasig and Mitchells Plain were recovered and confiscated.

3 suspects between ages of 27 and 40 years were arrested for hijacking and 2 vehicles hijacked Harare and Nyanga were recovered.

2 of the suspects are also being charged for house robbery and possession of stolen firearm, 9mm firearm and toy firearms were found in their possession. Once they are charged, the suspect are due to appear in various courts in the Peninsula.

Philip Buys and Matthys Beukes claim Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek international mountain bike stage win

South Africa’s Yellow Jersey wearers, Philip Buys and Matthys Beukes (SCOTT Factory Racing) claimed a second consecutive stage win when they outsprinted a small lead group on Stage 3 of the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek international mountain bike stage race on Wednesday.

Second place went to the German Team Bulls pair of Tim Bohme and Simon Stiebjahn with South Africans Lourens Luus and Adriaan Louw (Fairview Elite) filling the final podium spot. Buys and Beukes retain their General Classification lead of 3 minutes 26 seconds over Team Bulls.

In the women’s race, the Biogen Toyota Cape Brewing Co. pair of Robyn de Groot (RSA) and Jennie Stenerhag (SWE) claimed their 4th successive stage victory, also in a sprint finish, against Asrin Cycling’s Catherine Williamson (GBR) and Alice Pirard (BEL) and maintained their overall 13-minute lead.

After Tuesday’s gruelling stage, which culminated with a mountaintop finish at the summit of the iconic Swartberg Pass; and with Thursday’s brutal Stage 4 looming, the riders appeared to consolidate somewhat on Wednesday’s Stage 3 over 107km from Prince Albert to De Rust.

In the men’s race, a pack of 5 teams reached the final 20km in the lead group – SCOTT Factory Racing, Team Bulls, EAI Cycling, Fairview RECM (Lourens Luus and Adriaan Louw) and Asrin Cycling’s (James Reid and Herman Persteiner). Unfortunately for Asrin Cycling, Persteiner encountered a mechanical with his chain, which eliminated them from the final dash.

The remaining quartet shared the workload into a strong headwind, but rode a tactical approach to the finish, which included 2 90-degree turns and a slightly uphill finishing straight.

“We predicted this morning the stage might finish in a sprint so were ready for it. We’ve discussed our sprinting tactics quite a bit, but didn’t have to implement them today as Simon (Stiebjahn) made the first move and we were forced to react. Matthys went after him and I watched Tim (Bohme). Simon faded a bit and that allowed both Matthys and I to go across the line ahead of them,” explained Buys.

“We accepted with about 10km to go that it would come down to a sprint,” said De Groot. “Catherine and Alice rode really well today and we knew that we’d have to be tactically smart to beat them. Fortunately we got our timing right and were able to win. We still have a 13-minute lead, but it’s not big enough to allow us to relax, especially with tomorrow’s big stage.”

Thursday’s Stage 4 is likely to be the most decisive of the 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek. With 2690m of ascent in 109km, it promises to make or break podium ambitions. It could also prove the toughest test for many of the amateurs, who are aiming to just complete the event.

The stage starts with a 25km steady drag before taking riders through the dry, rocky Kammanassie Mountains and over to the forested coastal belt area of George. The contrasts on this stage are remarkable and could well contribute to a General Classification shake-up.

“It will be a tough stage tomorrow. But Matthys and I will not be riding defensively. We’re keen to push the technical sections hard, but will stay as safe as possible,” revealed Buys.

In the other team racing categories, South Africans Brian Lennox and Hannes Hanekom (Klein Karoo Giants) were the top Amateurs, moving into the GC lead in the process. South Africans Kobus and Fienie Barnard (Klein Karoo Mixed), won the sprint for the stage, but are still second on GC to Germans Max Friedrich and Jana Mischance (Firebike Tomotion by Blacktusk).

Heinz Zorweg (AUT) and Bartie Bucher (SUI) of Team Meerendal Wheeler 2 claimed a 4th consecutive stage win and further extended their category lead; while South Africans Johan Labuschagne and Gerrie Beukes (Klein Karoo Veterans) secured a second successive stage win and moved to within less than a minute off Veteran category leaders Fanie Venter and Wayne McDuling (Pynfabriek) in the overall.

In the Solo men’s division, Travis Walker (RSA) won the stage in his category and moved into the General Classification lead, while Christine Janse van Rensburg (RSA), claimed another stage and extended her overall lead in the Solo women’s race.

Spectacular route launched for 2014 Cape Pioneer Trek

The tough climb to the summit of the Swartberg Pass will once again provide a spectacular stage setting for Stage 2 of the 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek.

The route for the 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek international mountain bike stage race in South Africa has been finalised and holds some spectacular highlights for the more than 800 riders to look forward to come 12 October when the sixth edition of the race gets underway.

For the first time, the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek will have International Cycling Union (UCI) grading status, which means an increase in prize money and the allocation of UCI rankings points to the top finishers on each stage and overall. But most of the field won’t be concerned with podium battles, but rather conquering a race route that’s varied, challenging and rewarding, which contains some exciting fresh section as well as some old favourites, covering a distance of 574km with a total vertical ascent of 11 958 metres over the 6 days.

An overview of the full 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek race

A typically African bush experience will herald the opening stage, which is a 15.3km prologue time trial at the Buffelsdrift Game Lodge just outside the Western Cape town of Oudtshoorn. Buffelsdrift is home to a variety of wildlife including 3 of the Big 5 – buffalo, rhino and elephant – sure to create a powerful impact, not only on the international racers, but the South Africans too. Riders can expect some short climbs and fast, flowing descents in the race opener, which climbs a total of 371 vertical metres.

Stage 1 from Oudtshoorn to Calitzdorp is a 100km haul with 1794 metres of climbing. The muddy conditions near the start of this stage in 2013 had a significant impact on the final overall standings in all categories. It’s not the stage where you can win the Cape Pioneer Trek, but, as was seen last year, it’s certainly a stage on which you can lose it. Riders will be relieved to know that this year there’s a different start venue – the centre of Oudtshoorn – with whole new section of trail between the first 2 water points.

The quaint Karoo town of Prince Albert at the base of the Swartberg Pass, will host the overnight stop between Stages 2 and 3 of the 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek.

As with 2013, Stage 2 will once again take riders from Calitzdorp to the summit of the Swartberg Pass, still the only mountaintop stage finish in South African mountain bike stage racing. The iconic stage offers a total of R250 000 in prize money, to be split equally for the first men’s team and first women’s team to the summit. It’s the richest stage prize in mountain bike racing. Stage 2 is only 86km long, but at 2781 metres of ascent, a brutal challenge.

And Stage 3 from Prince Albert to De Rust, which crosses from the Great Karoo to the Klein Karoo through the dramatic Meiringspoort over a distance of 107km with 1543m of ascent, will also follow a similar route to the 2013 edition. The 10km singletrack descent through the Swartberg into Meiringspoort is one of the most talked about sections of trail from last year’s race and has been included again for 2014.

But Stages 4–6 bring some fresh terrain – and challenges – to the 2014 edition. Stage 4 looks like it will be decisive. With 2690m of ascent in 109km, it promises to make or break podium dreams. It could also prove the toughest test for the non-pros who are aiming to beat the daily cut-off with a bit of time to spare. The stage starts with a 25km steady drag before taking riders through the Kammanassie Mountains and over to the coastal belt area of George. The contrasts on this stage are remarkable. It shouldn’t be underestimated.

Stage 5 from George to Herold is also likely to be deceptive. In just 71km, riders will have to climb 1755 metres, initially up an 18km climb out of George to the Montagu Pass, after which riders will be taken on a new section of trails through the Klein Langkloof along the northern slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains.

The final stage is being touted by the organisers as the ‘easiest in Cape Pioneer Trek history’. The riders will no doubt appreciate this last reprieve-like 86km leg from Herold to Oudtshoorn via a loop on the much-praised trails of the Chandelier Game and Ostrich Farm.

“We change the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek route each year to ensure it stays interesting for the riders, many of whom return year after year, and that we make the most of the amazing variety of terrain we have in the region,” said Henco Rademeyer of Dryland Event Management, the organisers.

“We’re a bit limited in making any significant changes to the first half due to us getting the race to the summit of the Swartberg Pass on Stage 2, Day 3. That’s become such a significant stage and we really feel it’s important to retain it for 2014. But the second half of this year’s race definitely brings some great changes. It’s going to be tough; it’s going to be scenic; but it’s going to be worthwhile. We can’t wait!” smiled Rademeyer.

Friday 17 October – Stage 5: 71km, 1755m ascent, George–Herold
Saturday 18 October – Stage 6: 86km, 1024m Herold–Oudtshoorn
