10 Tips to reduce the cost of Car Insurance Cover

The 2015 budget speech left little room for celebration. Personal income tax is up, fuel levies are up, as are sin taxes. Most of us have little or no control over these spiralling expenses and our budgets gasp as we try to squeeze in the additional expenditure. But there are ways to make our money go further … even in the unlikeliest places.

Innovation Group’s Managing Exec for Insurance, Jonathan Holden, identifies 10 tips to turn pricey-but-necessary insurance into budget boosting cover.

Structure your excess carefully
A higher excess can reduce your monthly premiums. As the self-insurance portion of our risk cover, an excess can be structured to suit our specific needs and, more importantly, our specific pockets. By analysing our individual financial commitments, it is possible to identify the amount that we can comfortably carry in the event of a claim.
An excess kitty can be earmarked for emergencies and, if you are lucky enough not to claim, this sum becomes an annual saving instead of an expense.

Update the market value

Most vehicles decrease in value every month. It is important to ensure that you are not paying to insure a brand new vehicle when you’ve been driving it for 5 years. Many consumers assume that the market value is automatically amended but, in most instances, this is not yet the case.

Don’t disregard the discount

Most risk improvements can be coupled with a premium discount. Security systems, tracking devices and related measures all have an influence on your monthly insurance outlay. Be mindful of the factors that drive the structure of your policies and make sure that all enhancements are disclosed to your insurer.

Consolidate your policies

There is little risk in consolidating your insurance policies under one provider. The financial benefits of cross-subsidization (one policy that reduces the cost of another) can be substantial. Shop around. Make sure that the company you pick can accommodate all of your insurance requirements, from vehicles and household contents to special purpose assets such as your son’s jet ski or the family caravan or even your daughter’s horse.

Be aware of unnecessary policy riders

Some so-called ‘free’ benefits can be costly. Typically an insurance rider supplements an existing policy with more coverage but this extra service may prove to significantly increase your premium. Do you really need additional cover or an array of services that are not a part of your lifestyle? Check that the premium for value added services is absolutely necessary and that you have the most suitable products for your particular lifestyle.

Check for duplicate coverage

Duplicate cover does not mean duplicate pay-outs. Check your policy documents to ensure that the same assets are not insured under more than one policy.

Investigate appliance warranties

Mechanical failure and breakdown are usually not covered under normal household policies. These costs can wreak havoc on a tight budget. Appliance warranties cover the repair (or replacement) of household items due to mechanical failure and can be extended to cover surge and lightning damage which may be exclusions on a standard contents policy.

Consider cheaper premiums rather than a no claim bonus

Innovative insurance companies are able to offer different methods of saving. Although a no claim bonus may seem like a windfall – a monthly saving may make better fiscal sense. Use your broker or customer service agent to structure a flexible and versatile policy centred on your needs.

Ensure that your insurance matches your assets

There is no need to insure average priced items at exorbitant replacement values. If you are over- or underinsured it will affect the value of the pay-out in the event of a claim. If you dispose of assets, don’t forget to advise your insurer to remove them from your cover.

Ask questions

Read your policy documents before you put them in a file at the back of a cupboard. Make sure that you understand the fine print. Contact your broker or a customer service line if anything is unclear or confusing. After all, an insurance policy is simply a piece of paper with a promise – ensure that it’s a promise that protects your best interests.

10 Tips to reduce the cost of Car Insurance Cover

Why Low cost Car Insurance Could Be Eluding You

by Sarah Cooke on March 16, 2015 | posted in Vehicle Insurance

When you are purchasing for cheap vehicle insurance coverage, it’s essential to know that your premium is determined by many risk aspects — numerous of which you can influence, and some of which you can’t. But don’t despair over what’s out of your manage. Take into account these factors as you shop around to figure out what, if something, you can do to get insurance coverage with lower monthly premiums.

Exactly where you live

Densely populated areas usually have larger rates of accidents and thefts, which increases insurance coverage expenses. Some cities also face larger labor expenses for auto repairs. Higher repair expenses can make claims much more costly to settle, resulting in greater premiums.

High unemployment rates can make it hard for some cities’ residents to afford insurance coverage. In cities with a high price of uninsured drivers, it’s a good thought to get uninsured motorist coverage, which protects you in case of an accident involving an uninsured motorist. But far more coverage signifies you will pay a lot more in month-to-month premiums.

Your age

Drivers under 25 are going to struggle to find low-cost vehicle insurance coverage since research shows they’re more probably to be in accidents than drivers with more encounter.

Rates also normally start to go up following drivers turn 70. The Centers for Disease Manage and Prevention says greater fees for this group are due in element to impaired vision, poorer cognitive functioning, physical limitations — such as arthritis — and use of prescription drugs.

Your gender

Sorry guys, investigation also shows that men are a lot more likely than ladies to get into car accidents and engage in risky behaviors such as speeding or drunk driving. Men are also far more likely to acquire vehicles that are costlier to insure, like sports automobiles, and are less probably to put on seat belts.

Your state’s laws

Insurance regulations differ broadly among states, and some of those requirements lead to higher auto premiums.

No-fault insurance laws are a excellent example. No-fault automobile insurance coverage will cover medical rewards and other accident-related expenditures regardless of fault. And no-fault states impose restrictions on how significantly you can sue for, unlike conventional tort insurance.

While no-fault insurance can lessen lawsuits and speed up health-related claims, it is also ripe for fraud. Fraud contributes to greater insurance rates due to the fact most insurers pass the fees of bogus claims and fighting fraud onto policyholders.

Don’t be frustrated by pricing factors that are out of your manage. There are lots of things you can do to reduce your auto insurance coverage rates, like keeping a very good driving record and owning a vehicle that is low-cost to insure.

5 Keys to Low cost Auto Insurance coverage

Everyone who drives wants auto insurance coverage, but seeing the month-to-month premium disappear from your bank account can nevertheless hurt. Even even though insurance coverage is a necessity for most men and women, there are some attempted-and-correct approaches to locate low cost car insurance coverage:

1. Bundle your coverage

Consumers can normally get discounts by acquiring a number of insurance coverage policies by way of the identical business. If you only need auto insurance coverage, this won’t be considerably help, but if you acquire homeowners or renters coverage, or if you insure multiple vehicles, you should expect reduced prices.

2. Reassess your plans and limits

It’s never smart to have less coverage than you want, even if it gets you less expensive automobile insurance. Opting for lower liability limits might save you cash, but it could come back to haunt you if you are at fault in an accident. You should usually have sufficient liability coverage to safeguard your assets – including an umbrella policy, if your auto policy’s limits are not high sufficient.

Nevertheless, you might be in a position to trim your coverage in other methods. Have an old auto? Drop comprehensive and collision coverage, and consider employing what you’d spend in premiums toward your new automobile fund. And verify to make confident you don’t have duplicate coverage. For example, you do not require towing and labor coverage if you are a member of AAA.

3. Attempt usage-based insurance

If you are prepared to give your insurance coverage firm access to far more info about your driving habits, you could save income on premiums. Progressive and State Farm, along with other insurers, now supply usage-based insurance applications.

93615 HiRes square 300x290 With usage-primarily based insurance coverage, you spot a device in your vehicle that records particular data, such as how much you drive and how abruptly you brake. If the device shows that you drive much less often than average or that you practice secure driving behavior, you will obtain a discount.

Hold in thoughts that even though insurers say the majority of buyers acquire discounts, signing up for usage-based insurance may possibly not save you funds. And privacy advocates have raised issues about such insurance, particularly the reality that it permits insurers to tell — with a higher degree of accuracy — where you are driving. If you’re concerned about Big Brother, appear for savings elsewhere.

4. Choose a larger deductible

Your deductible is the quantity you pay for covered repairs prior to your vehicle insurance coverage kicks in and pays the rest. It stands to explanation that increasing the amount of your deductible would lead to a reduced premium, even though drivers in some places will see much better final results than others. And don’;t forget that you may require to pay your deductible someday, so don’t commit to an quantity that is a lot more than you can afford. Hold the amount in an emergency fund in case you want it.

5. Shop around for low cost insurance coverage

Loyalty is a great good quality, and some insurers reward longtime buyers with discounts. In other instances, your insurer will take your continued enterprise as a hint that they can jack up your rates. And some insurers are simply friendlier than other individuals to households with teenage drivers or drivers with spotty records. It is usually intelligent to gather a handful of quotes about renewal time, even if your or your family’s insurance coverage demands haven’t changed, to ensure that you’re acquiring the ideal deal.

2015 GMC Yukon Denali Tested: Big Funds Brute in a Low cost Suit

Instrumented Test

Sag Harbor funds, Salinas-grade luxury.

We just cannot talk about the GMC Yukon Denali with out obtaining the sticker-shock vapors out of the way. Gaze upon the $ 74,720 figure on our tester’s Monroney, then huff smelling salts like a teenage Dee Dee Ramone left alone with a tube of Testors’ finest cement. That is a rather eye-watering sum for a descendant of the humble GMC pickup John Steinbeck kicked around the country even though writing Travels With Charley.

Far from its 1990s/early-’00s ubiquity, the body-on-frame SUV has after again grow to be a niche car. Its smaller variants, the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango, went unibody on their most current go-arounds. Ford’s mammoth Excursion trod the flightless path of the dodo bird 10 years ago, whilst the aging Nissan Armada, the Lincoln Navigator, and the Ford Expedition soldier on with minor revisions and refinements for the subsequent couple of years. For now, Common Motors has the newest models and owns this distinct game: It has the spread covered from the $ 46,745 base Chevy Tahoe all the way up to practically $ 100k for a loaded Cadillac Escalade ESV 4×4. Viewed via that lens, our Denali falls squarely in the middle.

What do you get for that outlay? How about a quarter-mile time that’d be competitive with a 21-year-old Camaro Z28? This Denali, equipped with the 6.2-liter V-8 not provided on GM’s lesser SUVs, blew by way of the traps in 14.2 seconds at 99 mph. Shoddy ergs, questionable styling and all, the LT1-powered 1994 Camaro was a performance bargain in its day. And if the Denali is not the deal of this century, it at least performs in a straight line—60 mph came up in 5.5 seconds, or specifically the same time it took the Porsche Cayenne GTS. As quickly as the road curves, although, forget about it. The GMC exhibits a mere .77 g of lateral grip and the really feel is not dissimilar to that of a 21-year-old K1500 Blazer. Which is to say floaty and a bit uncertain, despite the fact that the steering no longer demands on-center sawing to make minute directional corrections. Even though it gives double the horsepower that numerous SUVs settled for in the ’90s, it also sucks gas like that old, unsophisticated throttle-body-injected truck. We recorded a meager 14 mpg—equivalent to the truck’s EPA city rating, cylinder deactivation notwithstanding. The larger Yukon XL Denali in our extended-term fleet is faring greater (17 mpg) so far but carrying out far more of its miles in highway-cruise mode.

Inside, the Denali’s upgraded materials nonetheless do not very cut the asking-sum mustard. Our tester priced out roughly the same as a base Porsche Cayenne S. And although the Leipzig-built ute’s alleged mission is diverse from that of this bruiser from Arlington, Texas, there’s tiny point in pretending that they’ll do something but commit most of their days carrying out the exact same sorts of things. And inside, there’s merely no comparison. The Porsche’s interior materials, fit, and finish completely shame the large GMC’s. The Variety Rover Sport, which provides up some power to the Cayenne and the GMC unless you splash out Escalade income for the supercharged V-8 variant‚ similarly makes the huge Yank’s cabin appear Walmart-grade. Sure, the GMC’s got pickup-rooted rock-solid guts and does that American friendly-intimidation point much better than the smaller sized Euro-utes, but the galoot-in-a-low cost-suit vibe is instantly apparent if you have spent any time in the offerings from the opposite shores of the Atlantic.

If GM desires to wean itself from its money-on-the-hood addiction, it has to provide interior top quality on par with the competitors. And the competitors, when you’ve pumped your value this high, is utterly fierce. The Infiniti QX80, another dreadnought-grade, body-on-frame machine that commands related entry costs, feels opulent inside in comparison to the Denali. A single may possibly argue with its Zentraedi-battlepod looks, but Infiniti spent the money to do it right. The Yukon nails the huge, blocky, and butch theme—it’s a vast aesthetic improvement more than its droop-faced predecessor, but it just doesn’t really feel nice enough to play at this price point.

By the time Steinbeck penned his portrait of America at midcentury, he was at the end of a storied career—a man whose letters had brought him fame and the sort of cash-flushness most lowly scriveners will by no means reside to see. He had the wherewithal to summer season in Sag Harbor. The Long Island town is exactly the sort of location exactly where the Denali may possibly be put to operate nowadays. Ferrying the children to college, putting the boat in, doing the unluxurious grunt work the lush life demands. It is just that, nicely, that life calls for a shade far more consideration to actual luxury.

by Maxime Rieman on November 5, 2014 | posted in Life Insurance coverage

Far more than 95% of American households give to charity. Some do it in the form of time—volunteering on the weekends, for instance—while others do it by donating money or other products of value. For folks seeking to maximize their charitable donations, whole life insurance policies supply yet yet another way to spend it forward.

According to the 2012 Bank of America Study of Higher Net Worth Philanthropy, 62% of people donate to charity due to the fact they want to give back to the neighborhood, and 32% cite tax positive aspects as their major motivation. Utilizing a entire life insurance coverage policy for charitable giving permits policyholders to satisfy each of these desires although offering an alternative to basically cashing out a policy —for instance, because your young children are now grown and wouldn’t need to be offered for in the event of your death.

There are different approaches to assist a charity employing your life insurance policy.

Charity as beneficiary

You can name the charity as a beneficiary, permitting them to reap all or a portion of your death benefit when you die. Simply because you preserve ownership of the policy, you can adjust your mind at a later date, deciding on a diverse beneficiary if your situation or preferences modify. Although this does let an estate tax deduction, it does not have several short-term benefits.

Transferring policy ownership to charity

Transferring ownership of the policy to your charity will provide the very best short-term tax rewards by way of an earnings tax deduction.

By donating your life insurance policy, you are usually able to deduct the fair market place worth of the policy from your revenue tax liability. This could equate to tens of thousands of dollars, based on your policy specifics. But this isn’t the only revenue tax advantage of policy donation.

If you choose to transfer ownership of your whole life policy to charity, the charity becomes each the policyholder and the beneficiary. They can money the policy in or maintain it for the remainder of your life. Normally, if they opt to keep the policy, you will continue to pay premiums as you had prior to. These premiums are now tax-deductible, nevertheless, unlike when you were the policyholder. This signifies in addition to deducting the fair market value of your policy, you can deduct the premiums you pay each and every year.

Of course, there are limitations on signing over your policy. If the “basis” of your policy is significantly less than fair industry worth, the basis quantity is the quantity you will be allowed to deduct. The basis is the total amount of premiums you’ve paid on the policy, minus any withdrawals or payments you have received, up till the donation. Your insurance organization can decide what your deduction would be ask just before you make a final selection.

For numerous, donating a entire life insurance coverage policy permits them to give much more than they would be able to if they were donating money. If the life insurance coverage policy is no longer needed or the tax positive aspects are seen as a priority, it is a charitable act that gives multiple advantages.

Know the cost of a car crash: What being uninsured means for the uninsured, the insured and the insurer

;

1fc88 Intersection crash

Driving without insurance is a gamble which can become very costly if you have an accident. There are however products available which can make car insurance more affordable. Before driving on our country’s roads, South Africans should ask themselves if it is worth taking the risk, especially when times are tough and personal budgets are under pressure. The implications of driving without cover affect not only the uninsured party, but those who do have insurance and even the providers of insurance solutions.

Statistics indicate that every year, one in 4 people will be involved in a vehicle accident while one in every 2 people will experience a collision at least every 3 years. With 2 out of every 3 drivers being uninsured, the chance of being hit by a driver who is without insurance is high.

Impact on the uninsured

Should you get into an accident but have no insurance, the consequences can be financially devastating even if there are no injuries.

While there is damage to your own vehicle to consider, if you caused the accident, you could also be held responsible for the costs of repairing damage to the property of other people. This can be pursued by the other party in an accident, but in reality it is usually their insurance company which will seek damages.

If others are injured, you could also be sued for medical costs, pain and suffering inflicted on third parties.

Impact on the insured

If you do have insurance, but get into an accident with someone who doesn’t, there are still implications for you. Most significantly, you will have to pay an excess for any repairs which may be necessary to your vehicle and other property. Your premium could also be increased if you have had to claim, as your risk profile changes even though the accident wasn’t your fault. Some insurers also revoke the no-claim bonus; however, with MiWay, clients receive a bonus whether they claim or not.

Impact on insurers

To make their products attractive to customers, insurers work to keep their premiums as low as possible, while still ensuring sustainability. However, uninsured drivers directly impact the industry by driving up costs which often have to be passed on to customers.

Uninsured drivers who have caused an accident often cannot afford to pay for the damage. The insurer can pursue them for costs, but this in itself is an expensive exercise and in many cases, doesn’t bear fruit. After all, if someone has no money, they cannot pay.

If you are on the road, take advantage of low cost options. Some cover is better than no cover at all, so if your circumstances change, get in touch with your insurer to find out which options are available to you.

Insurance Alternatives for the uninsured

The low-cost alternatives available to uninsured drivers include:

  • Third-party, fire and theft covers you for fire and theft of your car and damage to the property of others.

  • Third-party only covers damages to the property of others.

  • MiWay’s unique MiWheels Limited Product, which offers partial cover for your vehicle, as well as benefits such as transport money in place of car hire.

Gen X? The cost of your life insurance is on the rise

1a606 462578059 200x133
With my Canstar hat on, you need to truly be reviewing all your insurances at least once a year. But let’s face it, regardless of whether it is attending an Arbonne party, choosing up and dropping off kids at sport, or installing Wi-Fi at your parents spot, there is constantly a distraction.

Nevertheless if you are more than the 40 year-old barrier, then now is a great time to assessment your life insurance. Why? Since unless you chose a level premium structure back when you applied for the policy, then your premiums are about to commence increasing.

For most people with ‘stepped premium policies’ our premiums go up every single year. Even so among the ages of 45 and 50 you will start off to see even bigger premium increases than you have previously noticed. The bad news is this is going to continue every single year for the rest of your life you will open the mail after a year and say ‘I cannot believe how much my life insurance premium has enhanced!’

So this is a wonderful time to think about whether you still need the exact same quantity of cover as you had when you took out the policy. Possibly you have much less debt than you did when you took out the policy, maybe the little ones are out of college (and not as reliant on you), or just possibly you have won the lottery. On the flip side, perhaps you have recently carried out a big and pricey home renovation, have purchased into a enterprise and are about to begin paying private college costs.

There may possibly be a lot of causes for you to either minimize or enhance the amount of life insurance coverage cover that you at the moment have.

How can you function out the quantity of cover you require?

Everyone’s economic scenario is slightly diverse and the amount of insurance you have needs to suit your personal situations. As a common rule of thumb, some considerations incorporate:

  • What level of debt would I want to spend off? (Feel about your property loan, any personal loans, investment loans and enterprise-related loans).

  • Would I want to leave a lump sum of income to meet massive expenditures? (For instance, income to cover the cost of private college charges).

  • Do I need to have to leave an quantity to invest, to aid replace a portion of my income?

  • Is there any other quantity of money that my family will call for?

And

  • What assets are currently accessible to sell, to contribute towards that amount of needed money?

There are a number of techniques that you can acquire life insurance coverage, all with their own pros and cons. Verify out the possibilities right here.

The most important piece of suggestions I can consider to give is to not right away cancel a policy when a new larger premium comes via. Make a regarded decision as it may be that you will not be able to get the same sort or level of cover, in a few months’ time if you choose you have made a mistake.

Accurate Cost of a DUI in Washington Right after Insurance Increases

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Washington state ranks 25th in the nation for the highest number of drunk driving fatalities. If you get caught driving under the influence, you are putting yourself and others in danger, and the ticket itself is not the only price you will pay. In addition to the fine, drivers who receive a DUI might have to deal with attorney’s fees, alcohol education fees and lost wages, among other costs.

One of the longest-lasting financial impacts from a DUI comes in the form of insurance increases. In Washington, car insurance increases will last on a driver’s record for 5 years after they receive a DUI.  The minimum fine for a first-time DUI in Washington is $ 940.50, but the resulting car insurance premium increases for the average Washington driver will be almost 2.5 times the initial fine—drivers will pay $ 2,334.01 more for insurance over the course of 5 years.

Key findings:

  • Depending on the severity of the fine, the true cost of a first-time DUI for Washington drivers is between $ 6,574.51and $ 10,634.01; 6.9 and 2.1 times the initial fines respectively. We calculated the true cost of a DUI by accounting for the fine, attorney’s fees, insurance increases and ignition interlock fees.

  • The typical Washington driver will pay $ 466.80 extra each year for insurance after a DUI. The increases last for 5 years after receiving a DUI, which means the average driver will pay $ 2,334.01 in insurance increases.

  • After a receiving a DUI, the average Washington driver will see his or her car insurance increase by 54.24%.

What are the costs associated with a DUI in Washington?

To calculate the “true cost” of getting a speeding ticket in Washington, we looked at 4 costs associated with DUIs:

1)   The fine: The fine that drivers pay depends on the situation. The minimum fine for a first-time offender with a BAC less than 0.15 is $ 940.50; the maximum is $ 5,000. According to Washington’s Administrative Office of the Courts, the average fine imposed for all convictions—not just first-time offenders—was $ 3,711 in 2013.

2)   Lawyer’s fees: According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Washington drivers who receive a DUI pay about $ 2,000 in lawyer’s fees.

3)   Ignition interlock device fees: If a driver wants to drive again, he or she will have to install an ignition interlock device in his or her car. According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, the device will cost about $ 1,300 for the first year.  In Washington, first-time offenders need to have the device for at least a year.

4)   Insurance premium increases: Drivers who receive DUIs will most likely see an increase in their annual car insurance premium, even if they shop again for insurance. The average increase in Washington is $ 466.80, but the actual amount will differ from place to place and driver to driver.

How can you minimize insurance costs after getting a DUI?

If you get a DUI, your car insurance company will often increase your car insurance rates and they might even drop your coverage outright. If they don’t drop you, however, it’s a good time to go shopping for a new carrier. Different insurance companies give different weighting to infractions like DUIs, and your current carrier may no longer be the cheapest.

Although it takes more time, consider getting phone quotes from a few insurers. This allows you to ask questions about your specific situation. Washington requires drivers convicted of DUIs to file SR-22 paperwork, which not all insurers support. In addition, be sure to ask about discounts—including those for vehicle safety features and bundling policies—which you may use, regardless of your driving history.

Comparison shopping may save you some money when you badly need it, but your insurance premiums will almost certainly increase. The question is, how much?

10 Washington cities with the most expensive DUIs

1. Tacoma

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,458.30
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,398.80

Tacoma residents have some of the highest average car insurance rates—$ 1,057.35 each year—in Washington. They also see the largest per-year dollar increase of any city for drivers who receive a DUI. Since car insurance rate increases last for 5 years, Tacoma residents can expect to pay $ 3,158.30 more in that time.

Tacoma area drivers are well-represented in the top 10. 5 of the other communities with the most expensive insurance increases for DUIs are within a relatively short drive of Tacoma—though they do experience a fairly wide range of increases.

2. University Place

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,457.10
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,397.60

The average University Place driver pays about $ 150 more for car insurance each year than the Washington state average. University Place’s high car insurance rates mean that when the city’s drivers receive DUIs, they end up paying more for car insurance than other Washingtonians receiving DUIs.

University Place is located in Pierce County, which has a DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving. The task force utilizes displays at the Puyallup Fair and also hosts a holiday campaign to educate residents.

3. Lakewood

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,423.40
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,363.90

Lakewood drivers pay $ 1,040.61 for car insurance on average each year. However, after a DUI, that number will jump by $ 624.68 to $ 1,665.29. The city’s drivers can expect to pay $ 3,123.40 over 5 years.

Even within the Tacoma area, which has some of the highest DUI-related insurance increases in the state, Lakewood stands out. At 60%, the amount the average driver convicted of a DUI can expect his or her premium to jump is the second highest in the state, after University Place.

4. Federal Way

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,270.00
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,210.50

Federal Way ranks highest on the list among cities in Washington’s most populous county, King County. The average Federal Way resident pays $ 1,045.50 per year for car insurance, but after receiving a DUI, drivers can expect their annual premiums to skyrocket to $ 1,639.50.

King County has been criticized for slow prosecutions of drunk driving defendants in the past. The average defendant facing a court date in the county won’t be charged for 84 days from the time of arrest.

5. Puyallup

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,159.00
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,099.50

The average Puyallup driver with a clean record pays $ 975.73 per year for car insurance. Upon receiving a DUI, however, that yearly premium will increase by $ 571.80. Puyallup drivers can expect to pay $ 2,859.00 more for insurance over 5 years as a result of a single DUI.

In 2012, there were more than 34,000 alcohol and drug-related crashes in Washington. The state also experienced 185 fatal collisions involving an impaired driver that year. Though Pierce County has some of the state’s highest car insurance rates—before and after a DUI—it comes in second in the state in car crash fatalities.

6. Lynnwood

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,103.15
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,043.65

Lynnwood is one of 3 towns in Snohomish County to crack the top 10. Its drivers face the steepest car insurance increases in the county after a DUI. On average, Lynwood drivers will see their annual car insurance rates jump from $ 984.29 to $ 1,544.92 each year. The average Lynnwood driver will pay $ 2,803.15 more for car insurance over 5 years after receiving a DUI.

Not only do Lynnwood drivers have the highest insurance increases in the county for DUIs in dollar terms, but they also see the highest increases in percentage terms, about 57%. This means they’ll pay more than Seattle drivers over 5 years, even though Seattle drivers have a higher initial insurance rate.

7. Seattle

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,088.80
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 7,029.30

Though not by much, Seattle drivers with clean records have the most expensive car insurance premiums in the state. Even safe drivers will pay about $ 1,058.09 per year. The average rate for a driver convicted of a DUI goes up by about 53% for an average of $ 557.76 more per year.

Recently, Seattle lifted restrictions on ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. A study by Uber claims that after the company started serving Seattle, DUI arrests decreased by more than 10%.

8. Edmonds

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,054.90
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 6,995.40

Just west of Lynnwood, Edmonds drivers face slightly smaller car insurance increases after receiving a DUI. On average, Edmonds drivers with clean records pay $ 968.44 for car insurance each year. After receiving a DUI, however, Edmonds drivers can expect their annual car insurance rates to increase by $ 550.98. Since rates last for 5 years, Edmonds drivers will pay $ 2,754.90 in extra car insurance costs.

Snohomish County has multiple efforts aimed at decreasing DUIs, as well as a memorial wall for DUI victims. The county also publishes a list of taxi and limo services residents can use if they’re impaired, and it runs a series of victim panels for offenders.

9. Mountlake Terrace

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 11,033.95
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 6,974.45

Mountlake Terrace drivers face steep car insurance premium increases after they receive DUIs. Residents of Mountlake Terrace, located just north of Seattle, pay an average of $ 990.75 for car insurance but, after a DUI, they can expect their yearly premiums to increase by $ 546.79 to $ 1,537.54. In total, Mountlake Terrace residents will pay $ 2,733.95 more for car insurance over the course of their penalty.

According to a 2012 report from the state of Washington, Snohomish County had the state’s third-highest number of traffic fatalities—34 that year. The county had 6 fewer fatalities than Pierce County, though they had about 700 more traffic accidents.

10.  Auburn

True cost with the maximum fine: $ 10,986.45
True cost with the minimum fine: $ 6,926.95

After a DUI, the average Auburn driver can expect to see his or her yearly car insurance premiums increase by about 52%. On average, Auburn drivers pay $ 1,032.86 for car insurance each year, but after a DUI, that premium will rise to $ 1,570.15. Auburn residents will pay an extra $ 2,686.45 for car insurance over 5 years.

Auburn sits mostly within King County, which had Washington’s highest level of collisions and traffic fatalities in 2012. Its rate of traffic fatalities, however, is relatively low. In 2012, King County had a fatality rate of 0.56 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled—lower than Snohomish (0.63) and Pierce (0.68), and more than 6 times less than the rate in Pend Orielle County (3.57).

Methodology

To calculate the true cost of a first-time DUI conviction, we accounted for the minimum and maximum fines mandated by Washington’s courts, attorney’s fees, ignition interlock fees and insurance premium increases. Actual DUI-related costs will vary from driver to driver. To determine the average insurance premium increases, we first calculated the average annual car insurance premium for drivers with clean records and then calculated the average car insurance premium for drivers who were convicted of a DUI with a BAC of .08. The estimated insurance costs are for illustrative purposes only. The actual insurance increases you face will vary depending on your insurance carrier, your location and other factors. NerdWallet only surveyed cities with populations greater than 10,000 residents.
