Three hijacking suspects arrested and two fatally wounded after a shootout with Police in Pinetown

On Thursday, 12 June 2014 members of the K9 Unit and Sydenham Police Station arrested 3 suspects aged between 18 and 20 for attempted murder, hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. It is alleged that the female victim was earlier hijacked of her grey Volvo motor vehicle. She was accosted by 2 suspects at gunpoint whilst seated in her car. They instructed her to move over and the suspect drove off with her in the vehicle. She was dropped off at Pineside Road in Pinetown and the suspects drove towards Clermont.

At about 20:00 police spotted the said hijacked vehicle at Roger Sishi Road in New Germany. The police officers activated their blue lights and ordered the suspects to stop. The suspects fired shots towards the police who returned fire. The suspects continued to flee until the driver of the hijacked vehicle allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall. 3 suspects managed to flee on foot into the nearby bushes and were later arrested. 2 other suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout. 2 firearms were seized and will be sent for ballistics tests to ascertain if they were used in any other crime in the country.  The arrested suspects will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court soon on charges of attempted murder, hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the good work that led to the recovering of the hijacked vehicle and the arrest the suspects. “We would like to warn criminals that the police will not hesitate to retaliate when their lives are in danger. It is a common trend that police officers in this province are confronted with gunfire on a daily basis when they attempt to arrest criminals. We are fortunate that none of our police officers have become statistics especially over the past few weeks,” she said.

Suspect fatally wounded after car chase and shoot-out with Police at KwaMashu

On Monday, 9 June 2014 at 02:25 members of the Flying Squad were patrolling in KwaMashu when they responded to a call by another police vehicle of a vehicle chase involving a car with no registration plates. They spotted the said vehicle passing at a high speed and a chase ensued.

There were 3 occupants inside the vehicle and when the suspects spotted the police giving chase they opened fire at police. Police returned fire whilst continuing to chase the suspects. Eventually the suspects lost control of the vehicle and collided into a house at the corner of Dakwakusutha and Ndlondlo Road. The suspects fled on foot whilst continuing to shoot at police. After the gun battle one of suspects was found with gunshot wounds and certified dead by paramedics on the scene.

An unlicensed 9mm pistol with its serial numbers filed off was found next to the dead suspect. After searching the suspect’s vehicle police recovered a further 2 magazines with ammunition. The other 2 suspects managed to escape during the shootout. The dead suspect who was later identified as Sihle Boy Jali (30) is linked to a case of attempted murder and rape reported in Ntuzuma as well as house robbery case reported in Newlands East. The suspect’s fingerprints were taken and we are convinced that he would be linked to more cases in the province. Charges of inquest, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms have been opened for investigation by KwaMashu SAPS.

“I am grateful that our police officers were able to defend themselves when they came under fire,” said the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni. She further commended the members for the manner in which they bravely took on these criminals despite coming under fire.
