Effective vehicle tracking a MUST to combat organized vehicle theft!

I have been fortunate in not yet having been the victim of car theft. My former boss had his bakkie stolen a few years ago from a golf club in Bloemfontein. I will never forget the response from the car guard.

As he was standing there dumbfounded at the empty parking space where he left his bakkie a few hours earlier, the car guard walked up to him and said “Don’;t worry Sir, I have the Registration number…!”

As I had to travel much more to Gauteng recently on business, I have also been exposed to many more stories from friends on how and where their vehicles and those of their friends were stolen. With this in mind I have decided to have vehicle tracking installed by Ctrack.

This makes a small difference in reducing my monthly car insurance premium, but a much bigger difference to my peace of mind.

Johan Theron from Ctrack with Nelio and Xanthe De Sa after installation of a tracking device for the coffee vending delivery vehicle

It is not only the individual vehicle owner that is targeted, but especially the business owner transporting cargo. A good friend and partner in Rugby15, Nelio De Sa has a coffee vending machine business called Coffeebreak and he has also decided to monitor his delivery vehicle with the tracking provided by Ctrack. This will allow him not only protection from hijacking but also improved efficiency and cost saving from the effective routing of the vehicle.

During recent discussions with transport and crash investigator Stan Bezuidenhout it has become clear that hijackings have become much more organized and professional. It is especially true when we take a closer look at the transportation of cargo! We decided to share a rather comprehensive section of content on the topic of Truck Hijackings, Crime and Road Safety on the Arrive Alive website and would like to invite vehicle and fleet owners to read this at:

Truck Hijackings, Crime and Road Safety
f2ba0 Ctrack Control room1
Much of the insights in this Q&A also corresponds with the feedback received from a recent Q&A between Focus on Transport and Logistics and vehicle tracking company Ctrack. We would like to share some of these insights:

1. What is the general trend surrounding the hijacking of trucks with cargo in South Africa?

Hijackers target loads that either offer high value goods such as cell phones, tablets, expensive alcohol that they have a definite market for or loads that that can be disposed off quickly such as nappies, cigarettes or any FMG’s.

2. What is the latest Modus Operandi when it comes to Truck jacking?

Without writing a training guide for inexperienced hijackers: The hijackers would gain access to the vehicle by waiting for an opportunity at truck stops, acting as passengers at toll gates or by waiting at environments where the vehicle has to stop. If not possible they would simply pose a law enforcement officers and force vehicle off the road to gain access. The use of SAPS marked vehicles has been on the increase
Hijackers would make use of technology to suppress tracking devices and then “disappear” with the vehicle for some time. During such “disappearing periods” loads are offloaded and placed in storage at pre arranged locations. Unless there is a specific need to retain the vehicle or trailer they would abandon the vehicle after offloading.

3. Do you find that thieves are after the cargo, the truck or both?

The vehicle type has some significance. Smaller vehicle do tend to be utilized after the hijack while bigger vehicles are normally abandoned. Hijackers are not opportunist, they are organised and would know exactly their cause of action, from taking the vehicle to storage of the load to the disposal or utilization of the vehicle afterwards. Vehicle that are stolen to retain are normally taken cross border (Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana) but these, when found, are recovered by our teams as we do not only have a National footprint but also an Southern African footprint.

4. What solutions do you offer to the industry (I.e. tracking systems for the cargo)?

Ctrack has solutions to track the trailer, the horse or the entire combination. If the trailer is hooked by a horse fitted with a Ctrack unit the trailer unit would pair with the horse unit thus tracking the combination. This results in communication cost saving on the trailer. However should the trailer be linked to a different horse it would track independently as a standalone.
Ctrack do offer a live wireless solution that can be placed in the cargo allowing visibility of the cargo when outside the trailer.

5. What is the success rate of recoveries?

There are a number of factors that have an impact on our success rate. We have found that 80% of vehicles stolen happens in the greater Gauteng area. The hotspots have been identified by all service providers and a lot of focus has been placed on collaboration between service provider and transporter to ensure that we can all improve on the current status.
The jamming of units have played a big role in our ability to recover but we have a 93% success rate on recovering vehicles.

6. What would you suggest a driver do in the event of high jacking?

How impossible this might sound the best advice for the driver is to keep calm and cooperate. These thugs do not hesitate to cause harm to anyone. Drivers should be aware of their surroundings and be on the look-out for conditions or events that could compromise the individual, the vehicle and the cargo. The sooner the driver becomes aware of a possible hijack scenario the more time he will have to counter act by activating a panic button or reporting his distress.

7. Should there be a bit more secrecy around the counter measures by tracking companies?

A lot has been communicated in the media the past couple of months. Some of the detail reported on compromises the initiative taken by companies to safeguard individuals, vehicles and cargo. The more the media reports on counter measures deployed by tracking companies and transporters the more information the hijackers have to counter these measures.

2016 Audi A7 Very first Drive: A Small Prettier, Much more Effective

1st Drive Overview

Stunning and rewarding to drive as ever.

Audi has faced criticism about its vehicles all looking the very same in diverse sizes, like matryoshka, these Russian nesting dolls. Consider the A7 a counterpoint. A big hatchback sedan based on the A6, it doesn’;t appear like the A6 or even the not-for-the-U.S. A5 Sportback. Every single crease is its own, and the all round shape is informed by 1970s and 1980s sports cars.

The A7 is one of our favorites, creating 3 appearances on our 10Best list and winning separate comparison tests against the BMW 640i Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz CLS550. As with the A6 and S6, Audi has upgraded the 2016 model, accessible from the first quarter of 2015. The front end looks much more modern with a subtler grille and slimmer LED headlights. Restyled taillights present a more horizontal and angular appear above rectangular exhaust outlets.

Audi gives 2 engines for the U.S. The 3.-liter V-6 TDI diesel with an output of 240 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque carries more than unchanged the 3.-liter V-6 TFSI supercharged gasoline engine now tends to make 330 horsepower, up 20, although with the identical 325 lb-ft of torque. Either a single mates to Quattro all-wheel drive and a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission.

Even though we lament that Audi won’t send its awesome 320-hp twin-turbo BiTDI to the U.S., the 240-hp diesel launches the A7 on a wave of torque and builds speed with reassuring force. It does just about every thing perfectly whilst emitting small much more than a subdued growl. There is ample passing energy the additional thrust of the higher-efficiency diesel sold in Europe comes largely at triple-digit autobahn speeds hardly ever encountered in America.

The supercharged gasoline V-6 does not feel really as sturdy off the line, but when rolling, it is clearly a lot more responsive than its TDI sibling—or most any turbocharged model in its segment. The soundtrack is silky-smooth, not menacing. The trade-off for its supreme manners is fuel consumption far thirstier than that of the TDI that recorded 30 mpg in our 2014 test.

Audi offers only the ZF 8-speed torque-converter automatic in the U.S., although buyers in other markets can choose a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. We’re told that Americans favor the torque overload at step-off. The automatic is fine for the diesel, but the eager supercharged gasoline engine pairs nicely with the dual-clutch gearbox Audi reserves for the sportier S6/S7 models here. That said, the ZF unit is a benchmark automatic, and no direct competitor offers a dual-clutch—you’d have to stretch the spending budget at least $ 10,000 to nab the DCT in the base Porsche Panamera.

We’ve praised the A7′s competent chassis before, and it still impresses. From the light steering to the precise turn-in and the way its suspension shrugs off uneven surfaces, couple of vehicles can match it in spirited driving. It really is comfy, as well, and quiet. For 2016, the excellent cabin is additional improved with an upgraded infotainment technique and fresh décor. Unfortunately, Audi hasn’;t fixed the poor integration of the head-up display the massive box atop the dashboard is impossible to overlook and so obtrusive that we’;d rather not have the technique at all.

Prices will stay close to these of the existing model, which begins at $ 66,825. For what the A7 delivers, including its gorgeous appears, that’;s not a undesirable deal. But if the hatchback shape isn’t for you, verify out the updated A6. It can do almost everything just as well for thousands significantly less.

BMW Functioning on A lot more Effective, Sportier Version of the i8

48c72 2014 bmw i8 photo 614773 s 1280x782 626x398

We like the BMW i8 for its styling, its efficiency, and its fresh approach to what a sports car can be. If there’s one particular area where it may well be perceived as falling short of the competition, it is in general output. With 357 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, it is rapid, turning in a 3.8-second -to-60 run in our test. But it is hardly the quickest or fastest auto you can get for its low-6-figure asking price.

BMW is completely conscious of the issue, and it is working on a repair. Sources tell us that by 2016, the normal i8 could be complemented by an upgraded version that will function an even a lot more powerful 3-cylinder gasoline engine and an upgraded electric motor. In the present model, the 3-banger makes 228 horsepower, while the electric motor is rated at 129 horsepower. The same electric motor produces 170 horsepower in the i3 city vehicle.

As a result optimized, a sportier i8 would make total system output north of 400 horsepower. And we think that BMW would fit a torque-vectoring method to make the i8 even happier in corners. The current model is designed to exhibit some understeer, a characteristic that BMW believes the cars’ customers—being gadget-content early-adopter types—will find simpler to cope with when they get carried away on Skyline Boulevard in the Bay Location. Critical sports-auto drivers would like to see much more agility, and BMW would perform that into the uplevel version. The new model would be sold alongside the typical i8.

Down the road, there could be even further evolutions. Automobile Magazine has published a report that suggests BMW is functioning on a hybridized supercar loosely primarily based on the i8 and packing a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Such a automobile could make far more than 500 horsepower. Bring it on, we say.

Road user pleads for visible and effective traffic enforcement on route between Krugersdorp and Pretoria

ac391 report bad

We would like to share an email to the Arrive Alive website by a concerned road user who regularly travels between Krugersdorp and Pretoria:

” There are dangerous drivers between 05h10 and 07h00 on route between Krugersdorp and Pretoria.

They drive at extremely high speeds, drive up to the cars in front of them until it seems if they are the trailors of the cars (which is not far from the truth – their manners remind me of trailor trash).

If the cars, who are overtaking other cars,  do not brake sharp to switch to the left lane so that the speeder can have the right hand lane all by him- or herself, they pass them unsafely near them in the left hand lane, then they switch sharply to the right hand lane – right in front of the car who were actually the one who did not break the traffic rules.

Then they brake right in front of the driver, who was actually driving at 122km/h a little above the speed limit and drive extremely slowly for a while. The poor driver can not do anything, because there are cars in the left hand line. After a while the bad driver looses interest, or remember that he or she needs to speeds and off they go to find another driver to be intimidated.

We need protection against these traffic offenders. The person iin the wrong is not the one who drives at 122km/h while he or she is overtaking another car. It is the one who drives at such a speed that they catch up with drivers driving at 122km/h, which is already above the speed limit.

If these drivers are not taken off the N14, we are going to have serious accidents on this road, especially near Diepsloot, where pedestrians passes the N14 via foot. It is still very dark, therefore it is impossible to see a pedestrian or any other person/hazard before it is too late while driving at those reckless speeds. It helps on the N14 (behind Centurion) that speed cameras are manned almost always.

c3c27 Road block JMPD Grasmere

Can it please be done on the N14 between Krugersdorp and Pretoria between 05h00 and 09h00 and then again in the afternoons between 14h30 and 18h00? It works on the N1, where drivers obeys the traffic rules because of visible policing.

If it can not be done, please provide us with a website where we can report such drivers without disclosing our own identities. If they are that reckless on the road, and the person whom they have intimidated reports them, i am quite sure they will find and attack them.

By doing so, a data basis can be build up against traffic offenders – and we wash each others hands.

Such a data basis can be used to prove that a driver does it always and that it was not in a moment of madness. It can help the police to get all their information during road blocks. It can be advertised as well that we can report such drivers without revealing our own identities.

I also think we have to make people aware of these dangerous, reckless, speeding drivers. I have reported one on your site today – CT 93 JL GP. This person seems to be aggressive and dangerous and I really do not want to meet him face to face although I was so intimidated by his dangerous overtaking that I took the time to write the report.

803b6 speed camera and stand 1024x768

What we need is basic information – the number of the car should be compulsary, but the colour, make and other detailed fields should not be compulsary to be completed.

I think it would be a great idea to make the following video:

1) car passing another car, a little above the speed limit

2) one coming up at high speed from the back, until too close to the driver

3) Great – now the reckless driver has the attention of the one who is driving in front and being intimidated.

4)  BAd driver passsing on left hand side, too close to the driver he/she wants to intimidate.

5)  BAd driver braking in front of the driver wgo is not in the wrong and who did travel at the speed limit

6)  AHA- moment – BAd driver has the full attention of the alerted driver

7)  Alerted driver see the following detail as clear as crystal – make of the car, registration number, colour

8)  AHA moment – report incident via cell phone or website that needs few information

9)  Traffic police alerted in the nearest town

10) The face of the fool who ensured that all his detail could be remembered because of his own aggressive attitude towards other road users – BEHIND BARS.

11) Alcohol test being done – to proof he/she is drunk or to proof he/she knew what they did

12) The message – if you want to ignore the traffic rules, you have to ensure that you do not offend the other users of the road. Thing is – that is your way of driving, your habit. The possibility that you can have more than one report with regard to your bad driving on one piece of the road- such as the N14 between Krugersdorp and Pretoria (mornings between 05h00 and 09h00) and the other way round (evenings between 14h30 and 18h30), is quite large.

We need to teach bad drivers a lesson – the others who plan carefully, who leave their houses in time and who take the punch for being late due to their own bad time management is fed up with their aggressive use of the raods.

In fact, they are welcome to build their own roads where they can kill themselves due to their bad driving skills.

This site could be perfect for launching such a shortened version to build a data basis of bad drivers.  And it can be very handy when they want to renew their drivers licences. If a lot of people were so offended by their driving that they took the time to write a report, these bad drivers certainly need to be retrained so that they can become responsible users of our roads.”
