Following the successful introduction of Volvo’s Drive-E Powertrain range in 2013, Volvo’s powertrain team once again demonstrates its technological leadership in emissions-reducing turbo technology.


“When we launched the Drive-E powertrain family, our aim was to deliver the most advanced 4-cylinder engines in the industry based on emissions and fuel consumption relative to performance and drivability. We knew that the 242 kW in our petrol configuration was just a starting point. The 330 kW High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept, demonstrates this ambition and the versatility of the Drive-E Powertrains,” says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo Car Group.


The 330 kW High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept is based on a set of technologies not usually found in a 4 cylinder engine. The engine utilizes 2 parallel turbochargers, which are fed by an electrically powered turbo-compressor. The compressed air from this unit, rather than being fed to the cylinders, is instead used to spool up the 2 parallel turbochargers. Fuel is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure. With this kind of power density, this triple boost installation and unique fuel system, enables a very dynamic drivability without any turbo lag, compared to a mono-turbo.


“There are several high power small size applications where one large turbo is used to create a high level of power available from other manufacturers, but the driving experience suffers due to slow engine response. We felt that with our heritage of being among the first car companies to embrace and offer a broad range of turbo technology since 1981, that we could improve this,” says Michael Fleiss, Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group.


The High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept attracted the attention and involvement of Volvo Cars suppliers AVL, Denso and Volvo Polestar Racing at an early stage, which allowed theories and technologies from racing applications to be infused in the development process.

“This was a very exciting project as we pioneered a combination of technologies in the same application, and the result is a quite unique engine with its high power yet quick response. Above all, its compact size improves weight distribution between the front and rear axle and lowers the centre of gravity – 2 factors that have a significant effect on the handling, whether it is a race car or a street car,” said Mattias Evensson, Race Engine Director at Volvo Polestar Racing.

“It may sound odd, but this 330 kW powertrain concept is an important part of the Drive-E development program. Down-sizing must offer customers attractive and usable power for broad scale emissions reduction to work. By developing compact powertrains we free up space and weight in the structure of the car, which can be used for electrification and even further emissions reduction. And that is our ultimate ambition,” concludes Dr. Mertens.


In South Africa, Volvo’s new Drive-E engines have been introduced across the range.

Volvo Cars’ Drive-E range of powertrains takes efficient driving pleasure to a new dimension in which output and efficiency – rather than the number of cylinders – determine the quality of performance.


Why the big fuss?


With Drive-E, Volvo’s outgoing 8 engine architectures are gradually being replaced by only 2: a 4-cylinder Drive-E petrol engine and a 4-cylinder Drive-E diesel. These 2 engines can be configured to meet the power / output needs of the entire Volvo range.

Prepared for electrification


The Drive-E engines are prepared for future electrification from the start. Key components, such as the Integrated Starter Generator, can be connected easily – and the compact size of the 4-cylinder engines means that the electric motor can be fitted in the front or rear of the vehicle. The battery pack will be located in the centre of the car.

Volvo Car Group is highly confident that the focus on 4-cylinder Drive-E powertrains is the right way to create the desirable blend of power, drivability and fuel efficiency.

We have a lengthy and checkered history with the present-generation Volvo S60. Initial it lost to the Buick Regal GS in a head-to-head comparison test. Then, given a chance to redeem itself in a 5-auto sports-sedan comparo in which it was spotted a 60-hp advantage, it completed last. We signed on for a extended-termer anyway, and the car wound up requiring a brain transplant to complete its 40,000-mile test. Now the S60 returns—this time with a new heart [see New Tech for 2015].


A 2.-liter, direct-injected 4-cylinder mated to an 8-speed transaxle with stop-start off types the basis of a goofy new appellation, “Drive-E.” (Note to Volvo: Put the internetty vowel just before the word.) All future Volvos will be powered by these new 4s, which, oddly, retain the T5 and T6 badges of their 5- and 6-cylinder predecessors. The base T5 Drive-E is turbocharged to 240 horsepower, although the T6 Drive-E is each turbocharged and supercharged to make 302 horses and 295 pound-feet of torque. That’s an impressive quantity of energy from 2 liters, but Volvo says even far more is forthcoming, with hybridized versions capable of sitting in for V-8s.






We’d like to say that doubling the forced-induction adders transforms the S60. But the T6 Drive-E runs the quarter-mile in 14 seconds flat, the exact same as the last 6-cylinder T6 AWD model we tested. The Drive-E’s zero-to-60 split is a tenth more quickly at 5.4 seconds, but the steering gets so light under full throttle that the advantage is as pyrrhic as it is modest. The whining blower does boost transitional throttle response when revs are beneath 3500 rpm, even though the 8-speed automatic has a higher effect in smoothing out power delivery. Paddle shifters are now common.


Braking functionality of the T6 Drive-E suffers thanks to a change in tire spec. Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season tires replace the Continental ContiProContacts, and the stopping distance from 70 mph extends to 193 feet, 11 longer than before. Why are we so convinced it is the tires? Due to the fact these Pirellis also undermine the braking capabilities of the BMW 3-series.


Of course, the impetus for all of this is fuel economy. And in the eyes of the EPA, Volvo succeeds. The T6 Drive-E is rated at a combined 28 mpg, 7 mpg much more than our 2012 extended-termer. Highway fuel economy is a lofty 35 mpg, impressive for any 300-hp vehicle.






Whilst doubling down on forced induction can enhance efficiency, it also offers heavy-booted drivers higher opportunities to burn fuel. To wit: More than 500 miles, we managed 24 mpg in the T6 Drive-E, 1 mpg significantly less than we saw for the duration of our long-haul test with the 6-cylinder model. Your mileage might vary, indeed.


The S60 got a new front end and a new instrument panel last year, but neither of these upgrades nor this new engine actually moves the bar. And a person at Volvo should recognize this, since for the time getting, Volvo will sell the new Drive-E models alongside the old turbocharged 5- and 6-cylinder vehicles.
