one hundred Really Rare Automobiles Found in France, Such as Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spyder [w/ Video]

Fewer than 60 Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spyders were ever built, making the model one of the most prized and pricey classic cars in the world. The lineage of each surviving example is as obsessively researched as the bloodline of a world-class race horse. Which is why the discovery of a previously unknown California Spyder among a secret French collection of 100 classic cars has the automotive world in an uproar. Talk about a barn find.

The jaw-dropping Ferrari is just one of 100 cars in the Baillon Collection, hoarded away by shipping magnate Roger Baillon throughout the 1950s and ’60s. Baillon’s dream was to preserve the finest prewar automobiles for display in a museum, and by the late 1960s he’d amassed a collection of 200 cars.

The collection featured names like Bugatti, Hispano-Suiza, Talbot-Lago, Panhard-Levassor, Delahaye, and Delage, along with achingly beautiful coachbuilt one-offs and more modern vehicles from Ferrari, Maserati, and Porsche.

Unfortunately, Baillon was never able to build his dream museum. Hard times befell his company, forcing him to sell off a number of the vehicles he’d gathered. The rest were left to languish under ramshackle corrugated tin roofs, strewn about a property in western France to succumb to rust and dereliction. Thankfully, the California Spyder was stored somewhat more permanently inside a brick garage—and next to a 1956 Maserati A6G Gran Sport Frua, one of just 3 ever built.

Inexplicably, as the market for world-class vintage cars skyrocketed, the collection went entirely unnoticed for decades. It was just 3 months ago that Pierre Novikoff and Matthieu Lamoure of the auction house Artcurial came across the massive barn find. “When they mentioned a Ferrari California SWB I thought it was a joke,” Novikoff told The Telegraph.

The auctioneers examined the full collection and determined that 60 of the cars are solid enough to sell at auction. The remaining 40 will likely be sold for parts by the family. In a press release announcing the Artcurial auction, Lamoure compared the discovery of the Baillon collection to the moment when Lord Carrington and Howard Carter entered Tutankhamen’s tomb. “Never again, anywhere in the world, will such a treasure be unearthed,” Novikoff adds.

The total collection is estimated to be worth up to €15 million, or just over $ 18 million. Expect a huge portion of that to come from the sale of the Ferrari California Spyder, a model which regularly fetches $ 10–15 million. The auction takes place on February 6, 2015. If your accountant won’t be able to wire the money from your Swiss bank account by then, perhaps this gorgeously crafted video tour of the collection in as-discovered condition will slake your thirst.

Such a Tease: 2017 Jaguar XE Configurator Goes Reside

38cda 2017 Jaguar XE PLACEMENT1 626x382

Jaguar’s new BMW 3-series competitor, the 2017 XE sedan, only just debuted at the 2014 Paris auto show, and already the automaker has launched a preliminary on the web configurator so fans can start playing around with the model’s various configurations. (Verify it out here.) We’re as excited as any person for the XE, but these looking for a full-blown XE fantasy machine with a complete choices list and pricing will be disappointed.

So far, Jaguar’s on-line construct-your-own tool for the XE permits users to select among 3 models—XE, XE R-Sport, and XE-S—and select interior and exterior colors, wheels, and, on choose models, minor things like headlights and cabin-trim styles.

There is no indication of what stuff costs, normal equipment, or what sort of optional extras XE buyers can appear forward to, but the R-Sport trim level indicates Jag will have an intermediate sport model to combat the likes of BMW’s 3-series M Sport or Lexus’s IS250/IS350 F Sport automobiles. (Jaguar utilizes R to denote high-overall performance models witness the XFR, XJR, and the F-variety R coupe.) No mention is produced of engine selections, but we currently know the XE will supply U.S. buyers a turbocharged 4-cylinder in each gas and diesel guises, as nicely as a supercharged V-6. All-wheel drive will be obtainable.

We uncover Jaguar’s choice to start letting people fiddle around with their XE practically a bit curious. Following all, right here in the U.S., the XE does not go on sale until early 2016. That is a long time to tantalize the masses and auto journalists alike.

Decadence, Aston Martin–Style: Official Photographs of Production Lagonda Supersedan Released, Such as Interior

a96ab 2016 Aston Martin Lagonda PLACMENT 626x382

Aston Martin has made the first suite of photos of its beautiful Lagonda hyperluxury sedan in production form. This follows the release of images of a prototype test vehicle in Oman a couple of weeks ago, which followed an embarrassing photo drop of the exact same auto by Oman Air shortly after it arrived in the Middle Eastern country. Turns out the Lagonda is just as beautiful sitting in front of a glass wall (and next to its most current predecessor) as it is bombing by way of the Omani desert.

Substantially, these photos finally show most of the Lagonda’s decadent interior, which appears to borrow heavily from the Rapide, for better or worse. Like the Rapide S, a huge transmission tunnel separates the left- and right-side seats, which all have fixed headrests. The dashboard looks the identical, dull steering wheel, flip-up navigation screen, and all. An elaborate diamond quilting pattern covers all 4 seats, and we wouldn’t doubt it if the leather was coated with pure gold. It sure appears that way.

Even though Aston is nonetheless officially mum on the details of the car’s underpinnings and powertrain (both of which we anticipate to be closely related to the Rapide S), we were able to glean a handful of key information of the Lagonda from a spokesman, especially that its crisply tailored physique is made totally from carbon fiber, and that weight stays “neutral over the Rapide S.”

Oh yeah, and that it has seen speeds of more than 175 mph throughout testing. Initial deliveries to its fortunate customers will begin in the 1st quarter of 2015 unfortunately for us and most of the rest of the world, all of the planned 150-to-200-unit production run are bound for the Middle East. Lucky sheikhs.

Volvo XC90 the first SUV to offer so much power with such a low emissions rate

. All-wheel drive, 6 seats and ultra-low emissions of around 60g/km

. Up to 290 kW and 630 Nm

. All-new Volvo-developed Twin Engine technology

Volvo Car’;s all-new XC90 SUV will offer an unrivalled combination of power and efficiency when it is revealed later this year. The AWD 6-seater offers drivers up to 290 kW with C02 emissions of around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle).

The all-new Volvo XC90 is the first SUV to offer so much power with such a low emissions rate.

“There are no compromises when you drive the all-new Volvo XC90,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “In the past you could either have power or low C02 emissions. But with the all-new Volvo XC90 you can have both.”

The all-new Volvo XC90 range offers a selection of Drive-E engine options, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The main distinguishing feature of the Drive-E engine range is that all variants are 4-cylinder engines – focus is on output and efficiency rather than number of cylinders.

“With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world-class fuel economy,” adds Mertens. “Even with 6 people seated in the all-new Volvo XC90, the C02 emissions per person and kilometre are outstandingly low.”

The C02 performance of the all-new Volvo XC90 will reinforce Volvo Car’;s leadership when it comes to bringing more environmentally-sound technologies to market. According to figures monitored by the European Car Industry Association (ACEA), Volvo Car Group delivered an industry-leading reduction in average fleet emissions between 2012 and 2013 – an overall reduction of 8,4 percent.

Volvo has made it possible for a 4-cylinder engine to provide all the driving pleasure associated with a much larger engine, whilst delivering record-breaking C02 figures. Volvo’;s ingenious Drive-E engines systematically replace all other powertrains in the Volvo range.

Twin Engine technology

Volvo Cars will also debut its Twin Engine badge with the all-new Volvo XC90. ‘Twin Engine’; refers to all ‘combination’; powertrains in the Volvo stable.

In the all-new Volvo XC90, the top-of-the-range Twin Engine will carry the badge ‘T8′ and be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one.

With Volvo Twin Engine, normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode. This utilises a 2-litre, 4-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine that powers the front wheels while a 60 kW electric motor drives the rear wheels.

The supercharger fills in the bottom end of the power range to give the engine a big, naturally-aspirated feel, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. The electric motor on the rear wheels provides instant torque.

At the push of a button, however, the driver can switch to quiet and emission-free city driving on pure electric power. The pure electric range on the all-new Volvo XC90 T8 is approximately 40 kilometres, and the driver can immediately revert back to the combined capacity of the petrol engine and electric motor – with its combined output of around 290kW and 630 Nm of torque – whenever necessary.

The all-new Volvo XC90 will be available in T8 in South Africa – more details will follow closer to the local launch next year.

Not only is there no compromise in terms of performance or efficiency, but Volvo Car’;s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) chassis technology also allows for far more flexibility inside the car. Other carmakers have struggled to combine the bulk of a battery pack with a luxurious and spacious interior, something that Volvo has managed to overcome.

“Since our new SPA technology is designed from the start to accommodate electrification technologies, the Twin Engine installation does not compromise luggage or passenger space,” says Mertens.

Full range of other engine options

The all-new Volvo XC90 range also includes the D5 twin turbo diesel engine with approximately 165kW, 470 Nm, and best-in-class fuel consumption of around 6l/100 km, as well as the D4 turbo diesel engine that delivers around 140kW, 400 Nm and a fuel consumption of around 5l/100 km.

The range offers 2 petrol engine options: the first is a T6 turbo engine with supercharger and turbo providing 235 kW and 400 Nm, and the second is a T5 that delivers approximately 187 kW and 350 Nm.
