Two unlicensed firearms and stolen vehicle recovered at Ekhombe area




In the early hours of this morning the Provincial Tracking Team, Provincial Crime Intelligence and Umhlali K9 Unit conducted an operation at eZilozini and Cwaka, Ekhombe after receiving intelligence of illegal firearms in the area. Police initially conducted an investigation that led them to 2 identified homesteads in the area. The homesteads were searched and the police found 2 9mm pistols with a total of 27 live rounds of ammunition.


2 suspects aged 55 and 67 were arrested and charged for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The members conducted further investigation with regards to a suspected stolen vehicle in the area. The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla was found and after an examination it was discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen to the Johannesburg Central Police Station in December.


A 55-year-old man was arrested and charged for being in possession of property suspected stolen. All 3 suspects are due to appear in the Ekhombe Magistrate’s Court later today.


The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the police team that led to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of illegal firearms and ammunition. “We appeal to the community to continue providing information to the police of illegal firearms in the province.


From our investigation it was found that these men had openly flaunted their illegal weapons however those that lived around them did not report their illegal activities to police as we would have expected,” she said.
