Mercedes-Benz GLK Replacement Will Come in “Coupe” Type, As well

262df 15C342 05 626x352

As BMW does, Mercedes-Benz should do. And vice versa, of course. So, provided the fact that BMW is now selling its X3 SUV moreover in X4 “coupe” guise, it naturally follows that Mercedes-Benz will be introducing a fastback coupe version of its compact SUV, also.

When it goes in for its redesign, the Mercedes-Benz GLK will emerge not only with a new nameplate, GLC, but a new coupe companion. Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche announced the latter at the company’s recent annual meeting in Berlin, at which time the sketch above was released.

Daimler’s moves in the compact-crossover class adhere to those it produced in the mid-size class, where the former M-class has morphed into the new GLE and spawned a GLE coupe offshoot.

Although the regular GLC is anticipated to be sleeker than today’s boxy GLK, Mercedes apparently believes that it can also create an even-swoopier version adequate to merit a “coupe” designation. We count on to see the common GLC debut this fall as the rear-drive GLC300 and the GLC300 4MATIC, with the GLC “coupe” to follow.

2016 BMW 650i Coupe Very first Drive: The Update Is Nonetheless Wonderful

With the 6-series, BMW has a clear winner on its hands. The lovely coupe, based on the 5-series sedan, has exceeded expectations—despite extremely ambitious pricing that positions it close to the variety-topping 7-series. Even although the 4-door Gran Coupe, a direct competitor of the Audi A7 and the Mercedes-Benz CLS, has become the most well-known 6-series model, BMW had us drive the standard 2-door coupe at the international launch in Lisbon, Portugal.

Tiny Tweaks

It takes a true BMW aficionado to spot the adjustments with this midterm facelift. Most prominently, the lower front air intake is restyled, and BMW has also changed the front kidney grille (9 blades rather of 10!). The look is intended to be sportier, we’re told, as some customers apparently thought the earlier model looked also tame. For those who want far more, there’s still an M Sport package, which has been altered, as properly. Adaptive LED headlights are now normal, and their inner workings are redesigned. The side indicator lights move from the front fenders to the mirrors. A new Black Accent package replaces much of the exterior chrome with black trim.

Inside, the 6-series sports plenty of gloss-black trim and brushed-metal accents. Purchasers can decide on Dakota or Nappa leather, and 3 2-tone colour schemes are accessible. The telematics method, of course, is additional enhanced and a single of the very best we have knowledgeable. The rear seats can hardly be deemed a desirable place to be for adults, due to the challenging access and limited head- and legroom. But the front seats are superb, supportive, and comfy. The controls are properly laid out—with the exception of the infuriating gear selector, which requires way as well significantly practice to be named intuitive. (Our favourite repair for this issue, the manual transmission, is not obtainable on the 640i or the 650i but is nonetheless an selection on the M6.)

At least the ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic is one particular of the very best units on the marketplace. It shifts quickly and unobtrusively, always locating the right gear to match the driver’;s expectations. As much as we dislike the gear selector, we praise BMW for its appropriate, race-auto-like operation in the manual gate: You pull to upshift, the intuitive movement when you are pinned into your seat by hard acceleration, and push forward to downshift, which you normally do whilst braking, when your body is traveling forward, as nicely.

Riding a Wave of Torque

Although the base 640i retains its 315-hp twin-turbo straight 6, we spent our time in the 650i, with its 4.4-liter V-8, also sporting 2 turbos. With its 445 horsepower, the 650i charges to 60 mph in a mere 4-and-a-half seconds and on to 155 mph. Whether or not on 2-lanes or on the freeway, the 650i is an utterly enthralling automobile to drive. It rides on a huge wave of torque, it accelerates with uncommon urgency, and it emits a distant rumble worthy of a correct sports automobile. The growl is underscored by the sports exhaust technique that is now common equipment. This engine is the basis of the 4.4-liter V-8 that powers the M6, and it shows.

The chassis is supremely capable, with excellent directional stability and the eagerness that you’d expect from a sporty coupe—but not necessarily from such a heavy vehicle. It is unfortunate that the electromechanical energy steering still lacks road really feel, and we also locate it artificially heavy in all of its settings. The optional all-wheel-drive technique (obtainable on all models) gets you a hydraulic steering setup, but it also adds still much more weight to an already heavy auto.

Its shortcomings are couple of and far in between, and the BMW 6-series remains one of the ideal luxury-overall performance vehicles on the market—and undoubtedly one of the most lovely. We wholeheartedly advocate it to any person who can afford it.

We’;re browsing for superlatives.

As the technological leader of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the large coupes have sent us browsing for superlatives for decades. The new S-class coupe is awesomer than ever. See? We’re nonetheless searching.

Built on a shortened version of the all-singing, self-driving S550’s bones, the S550 coupe is a stunner in individual. There’s genuine presence here, from the lack of a B-pillar, to the chrome ring around the greenhouse, to the little chrome dots on the grille that appear like the knobs on a dresser drawer. The S-class-primarily based coupes have often drawn envious stares from males old sufficient to keep in mind when personal luxury denoted 2-doors with names like Toronado and Eldorado, but this Benz’s new styling had strangers of all ages eyeing it.

We couldn’t quit staring at the leather-lined interior. Most cabin pieces are shared with the S-class sedan, but the coupe receives a special upper instrument panel. It’s a much more playful design, as if Italians had been asked to redo the S-class’s interior. Our test car arrived with the optional Designo package ($ 3250) that wraps even a lot more surfaces in leather. Add the Premium package’s massaging front seats and the Warmth and Comfort bundle’s heated seats, steering wheel, and armrests and you will not want to get out. You’re putty in the S550 coupe. Just sit back and melt into the heat whilst the $ 6400 Burmester audio program plays whale sounds. Driving? You must most likely park if you are that relaxed, but the $ 2800 Driver Help gadgets mean the S550 coupe can virtually drive itself. Back-seat riders may possibly want to get out, though. There’s sufficient space for 2 adults back there, but rear legroom is restricted despite a lengthy 115.9-inch wheelbase.

Private luxury is just that—it’s personal. And, to that finish, the S550 is a sublime automobile for the solo pilot. The structure is created up of welded stampings, just like other cars’, but the silence and solidity suggests forging. Not significantly disturbs the cabin. Wind noise is eerily absent. A slight hum from the wide tires is the only audible indication of motion. Only below intense use does the 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 raise its voice. Even then, it emits only a 79-decibel snarl.

Not a lot upsets the serenity, even if you start treating the 4761-pound Benz like a Mazda Miata. Cornering grip is excellent for one thing this big, at .92 g, and the handling is safe. The steering does not serve up sports-automobile really feel, but it is correct even at triple-digit speeds. Acceleration is robust, but there is slight delay just before the wick lights the 449-hp charge. Sprints to 60 mph take 4.5 seconds, 4-tenths quicker than the rear-wheel-drive S550 sedan. Common 4-wheel drive tends to make for repeatable runs. Leading speed is governed at 130 mph for U.S. versions, despite the Y-rated Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.

Mercedes-Benz certainly charges complete value for its individual-luxury experience. Rates start off at $ 120,825, but our test car cost $ 149,575. We’d suggest avoiding some of the far more expensive choices on our example, but if you can afford this automobile in the 1st place, we wouldn’t dream of denying you of your individual luxury.

1d326 European Delivery placement 626x382

From the March 2015 problem of Automobile and Driver

If you are arranging to order a new BMW and your passport is up to date, the most thrilling alternative on the order form may possibly be European delivery. As an alternative of just picking up the auto at your regional dealership, use European delivery to meet your BMW in its ancestral house. Think of it as a European vacation in your new automobile with BMW defraying some of the expenses of the trip. I went there in October to pick up my 428i xDrive Gran Coupe, and I lived to inform the tale.

Car delivery happens at the BMW Welt exhibition and delivery center, across the street from BMW’s headquarters in Munich. Situated next to the Munich Olympic Park, BMW Welt (German for “world”) is a striking piece of cyclonic, space-station architecture that is a should-see for any Bimmerphile. Soon after a snack of white sausage and brown pretzels in the consumer lounge, I was prepared for the auto show to commence. I walked out onto a large elevated platform and laid eyes upon my Estoril Blue 428i Gran Coupe, which was parked on a turntable. A spotlight hit it, and a lump settled in my throat.

604ab European Delivery inline1 626x382

BMW Welt, like Epcot Center, but cool.

A item specialist appeared to give me a thorough briefing on the car and its features. Even leaving is memorable: A 1-series M coupe dressed as a MotoGP Security Automobile fired up and led me on a lap of the second floor prior to descending toward the exit. Based on your level of enthusiasm, think about spending a complete day at this BMW-Disney when you take delivery, visiting the museum and taking the factory tour to watch an M4 becoming assembled.

A trip to Europe is not exactly inexpensive, and flights and hotels are the buyer’s duty, but choosing up your car in Europe saves adequate cash to support offset those costs. European delivery knocks roughly 7 percent off a BMW’s base price tag. That’s a substantial $ 2195 reduction on a base 228i coupe, and a sumptuous $ 9835 off the 760Li. Because the cars are not delivered here, BMW North America doesn’t want to kick back money to a U.S. dealer.

1422c European Delivery inline2 626x382

Instead, it passes this savings on to you, the buyer. Spot the order at your dealership—most incentives and rebates nevertheless apply, and the price tag is nevertheless really considerably negotiable. You can choose up your automobile in Europe even if you are leasing it. It is no surprise that the created-in-America X5 and X6 are not accessible for European delivery.

BMW gives a temporary tourist registration and license plates and throws in insurance for 14 days (up to 5 months’ extra coverage may be purchased). You can cruise the Continent at your leisure and rip by way of a few unrestricted autobahn sections before dropping off your BMW at 1 of 12 European places. Following 6 to 10 weeks, throughout which the car sails across the Atlantic and passes by means of customs, your vehicle lastly arrives at your dealership. All transportation fees and shipping insurance are integrated in the vehicle’s cost.

1st-hand knowledge bears out the claim that European delivery is the ideal no-cost selection on a BMW. After the manual transmission, of course.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

• Audi’s euro delivery plan gives a 5-% savings off the Car’s MSRP, 15 days of insurance coverage, shuttle service from the airport, totally free shipping, and a a single-night hotel remain.

The Party’s More than for Mini Coupe and Roadster—They’re Dead

c18bd 0910 01 z mini 50th birthday e1423858381817

Mini has announced that it is ending production of its oddball 2-seaters, the hardtop Coupe and the softtop Roadster. Each models are nevertheless primarily based on the second-generation Mini platform, and it seems unlikely that the duo will return as element of the new, third generation of Minis.

The pair was introduced with considerable fanfare as concepts at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show, as portion of the 50th birthday celebration for Mini. Their design and style was credited to Marcus Syring (who also penned the BMW Z3 coupe) and was most notable for the steeper windshield, squashed roofline (2 inches reduce than a common Mini), and vestigial trunk.

c18bd Roadster and Coupe concepts 626x382

The Coupe reached dealerships in the fall of 2011 the Roadster followed a year later. Solution positioning for each, however, was problematic. Mini tried to position the convertible as the return of the British roadster, but it wasn’t precisely that. And the Coupe was just, uh, various. Via 2014, worldwide sales amounted to only 27,350 for the Coupe and 28,867 for the Roadster.

Numbers like that mean the duo had been niche autos, and Mini’s strategy going forward is to concentrate as an alternative on core products—or “superheroes,” in the words of Peter Schwarzenbauer, the BMW Group board member under whose purview Mini falls. That indicates the lineup could shrink to just 5 models: Hardtop, in 2-door, 4-door, and convertible forms Clubman, a new version of which is due this summer time Countryman, which ought to migrate to the new platform next year a sports vehicle along the lines of the Superleggera concept and, potentially, a smaller city auto. Notice what’s missing here? Yep, the Paceman. We count on that will be the next Mini to follow the Coupe and the Roadster down that final off-ramp.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Stylistically self-assured presence, exclusive appointments and refined sportiness – the new S-Class Coupé from Mercedes-Benz combines the classic proportions of a large, sporty coupé with modern luxury and pioneering technology. As a world première, the breath-taking 2-door coupé can be optionally equipped with the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system with curve tilting function (standard on S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG). Additional standard technical highlights are the head-up display and the touch pad feature. Optional are the expressive LED High Performance headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals, produce a uniquely striking appearance.

“The success of the new S-Class impressively demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’;s status in the luxury segment. The new Coupé underlines this position in exclusive fashion. The large coupé has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’;s why it’;s now called the ‘S-Class’; Coupé,” says Florian Seidler, Executive Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa.

“The world premiere of the active curve tilting function demonstrates the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive.  The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’;s occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers,” adds Seidler.

The S-Class Coupé will be available with a 4663 ccV8 biturbo engine. The S 500 Coupé has a rated output of 335 kW, its torque level peaks at 700 Nm. The sporty motoring experience is significantly enhanced by the emotional sound produced by the exhaust system.

Like the S-Class sedan, the new Coupé is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer.

The “Intelligent Drive” systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. In addition to a distance and collision warning function in conjunction with Adaptive Brake Assist, which offers collision protection from speeds as low as 7 km/h, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS system installed in even the standard vehicle also features an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to more than 100 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. At speeds of up to around 50 km/h the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to around 40 km/h.

As in the sedan, the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been expanded by the inclusion of PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. When a danger of collision persists, the system can “lock” the brakes of the stationary vehicle prior to a rear-end collision and activate the PRE-SAFE® belt tensioners immediately before impact. This action minimises the risk of whiplash injury by reducing the forwards jolt caused by the impact and ensuring that the occupants are in the best possible position.

Extremely low wind noise was a declared objective when developing the S-Class Coupé. The aeroacoustics experts implemented form optimisation measures as early as the design phase. Furthermore, the body-shell and door sealing concept were configured to reduce wind noise. With success: the S-Class Coupé is the world’;s quietest series-production car in terms of wind noise, as proven by measurements taken in the wind tunnel using an artificial head to simulate the driver’;s ear and test drives with specially trained test people. To assess a car’;s aeroacoustics, Mercedes-Benz uses its own aeroacoustics index that has proven successful in numerous tests. In addition to the sound level in the interior, psychoacoustic variables such as sound sharpness and articulation quality (speech intelligibility when there are various forms of background noise) are taken into account.

94185 Mercedes S class Coupe

Numerous optional extras are available to make the interior of the S-Class Coupé exceptionally luxurious and comfortable. For example, the AIR-BALANCE package including the components “fragrancing” and “ionisation” plus additional air cleaning by means of activated charcoal filter is available (standard in the S 65 AMG Coupé), as is electric armrest heating as a component of the Warmth Comfort package.  The Coupé is equipped with the Seat Comfort package (standard) and, therefore the front seats feature the ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.

In co-operation with high-end audio specialist Burmester, 2 especially high-value audio systems have been developed: the Burmester® surround sound system and the Burmester® High End 3D surround sound system.

Design: sensual purity at its most beguiling

“Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all time, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design at Daimler AG. “The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with pithy precision.”

The exterior: flowing profile of perfect proportions

The S-Class Coupé is characterised by typical rear-wheel-drive proportions, emphasised by the hallmark Mercedes dropping line. The long bonnet with pronounced lines and powerdomes, the low greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as well as the large wheels (19- to 20-inch) and the broad visual effect created by the rear reinforce the S-Class Coupé’;s aspirations as a masterpiece of automotive refinement. With a wheelbase of 2945 mm, the Coupé is 5027 mm long, with a width of 1899 mm and a height of 1411 mm.

Its convexandconcave modelled surfaces lend the S-Class Coupé a sensuous character. The sculpted appearance lends it classic elegance that forms a perfect symbiosis with the modern-progressive design idiom.

The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime running lamps lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the S-Class Coupé the eyebrows have been further refined with a semicircular counter-curve. In combination with the standard LED Intelligent Light System, unique headlamps with no less than 47 Swarovski crystals are optionally available. 17 angular crystals form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps.

The S-Class Coupé features a panoramic roof extending over 2-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.2 m2, it appears almost 150 percent larger than on the predecessor model. MAGIC SKY CONTROL (optional extra) makes it possible to switch the transparency of the roof at the push of a button, from light to dark. When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission, i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, falls to less than 1 percent and thus reduces heating-up of the vehicle by up to 10 °C. In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind.

The interior: modern luxury as avant-garde design

The interior design of the new S-Class Coupé is an enthralling combination of sculptural, sensuous volume elements and components, and the clear geometry of its basic architecture. High-class appeal, quality workmanship and exceptional touch and feel are a treat for the passengers’; senses, so that the car’;s interior represents the highest level of “modern luxury”.

The S-Class Coupé’;s dashboard fascinates with its architecture, giving rise to a vehicle of unique character in the upper coupé segment. This was made possible by repositioning the airbag to a completely new, low location. This concept enables the large, 2-part wide-screen format TFT display to be placed in a prominent “hovering” position in front of this trim surface. Under the display, the sportily elevated centre console extends to the vehicle rear. All lids and armrests are lavishly covered in leather.

The use of the finest materials, surfaces, colour combinations and seam designs contributes towards achieving a truly exclusive car interior. Air vents, switches, belt extender rosette and trim elements are in electroplated “Silver Shadow”. This gives the trim elements a particularly high value appeal and enhances the 3-dimensional effect of their surfaces.

In front of the armrest is the touchpad (standard) with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any of the head unit’;s languages. Diverse controls, e.g. for the multimedia system, are arrayed as keys in a semicircle in front of the central control element.

Both the front and the rear seats have a pronounced sporty character, the 2 rear seats are designed as individual seats. The Exclusive package optionally includes seats in designo Exclusive nappa leather with a striking diamond backstitching pattern on backrests and seating surfaces. The front seat belts are integrated in the rear side panelling without interrupting the waistline with windows open; seat belt extenders make them easily accessible for the seat occupants.

Less distraction: Head-up display

The standard head-up display brings important information directly into the driver’;s field of vision, presenting it on the windscreen to ensure less distraction from the traffic situation. The system informs about vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and driving assistance system messages.

The technology is based on mirror optics and a full-colour display module with a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels which operates with high-power LEDs. They project the virtual image, which measures around 21 x 7 centimetres, into the driver’;s field of vision where it appears to float above the bonnet around 2 metres away. The resolution of more than 60 pixels per degree of viewing angle ensures a needle-sharp image. A special light sensor located near the top edge of the roof automatically adjusts the brightness of the head-up display to the exterior lighting conditions.

Lower transversal forces: active curve tilting function

MAGIC BODY CONTROL (optional S 500 Coupé), the first suspension system with the ability to “look ahead”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The curve tilting function makes the Coupé lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort. The aim is not to achieve higher cornering speeds, but a new driving experience: the S-Class Coupé glides elegantly through bends.

The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system, optionally available for the S 500 Coupé includes the new curve tilting function in addition to the Active Body Control (ABC) and ROAD SURFACE SCAN functions. With Active Body Control the suspension struts are equipped with hydraulic cylinders (so-called plungers), in order to adjust the force in each strut individually. Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function changes the pre-load of each individual spring. This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second on bends – depending on the road angle and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to 15 metres ahead, and an additional lateral acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of 3 drive modes (“Curve”, “Comfort”, “Sport”) using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 15 to 180 km/h.

Emotively sporty sound: exhaust system with flaps

The emotive sound of the exhaust system makes a decisive contribution to the sporty driving experience. The deeper sound components ensure a fuller, sportier sound. In the transversally positioned rear silencer of the twin-pipe exhaust system there are 2 flaps that can be opened and closed pneumatically depending on the engine speed.

When the flaps are open the exhaust gases are conducted through the rear silencer along a different path so that the vehicle sound becomes more powerful. The switching point of the flaps depends on the selected drive mode – in S mode, the flaps open earlier than in E mode. As soon as the S-Class Coupé engine starts, the power of its sound can be heard.

A long tradition: large coupés from Mercedes-Benz

The history of the large Mercedes coupés in the post-war years dates back to 1952, when Mercedes-Benz launched the legendary 300 S Coupé – a “car for the world’;s elite” as the automotive press of the time judged. It was followed in 1956 by the 220 S Coupé of model series W 180, which created a sensation in particular due to its self-supporting 3-box body. From 1961 to 1971 the elongated, elegant Coupé of model series W111/W112 enthralled no less than 29,918 highly discerning customers, who were able to choose between the Type 220 SEb Coupé 6-cylinder models and the Type 280 SE 3.5 Coupé 8-cylinder models.

The SEC coupés of model series C 126, which remained in the programme of the Stuttgart-based automotive brand for 10 years and of which over 74,000 were sold, were based on the S-Class of 1981. In 1992 the successor model (model series C 140) was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, also featuring for the first time as an S 600 Coupé with a 290 kW (394 hp) twelve-cylinder engine. It was to be the car in which the Electronic Stability Program ESP® had its world première in 1995. Later on this coupé was renamed “CL-Class”. Another forefather of the new S-Class Coupé celebrated its world première under this name in March 1999. With pioneering innovations such as active ABC suspension (Active Body Control) and bi-xenon headlamps this 2-door car set new standards.

Supreme exclusivity, sophisticated design and trend-setting state-of-the-art technology were combined in the last CL-Class (2006). This luxury coupé opened up a new dimension of vehicle safety with the introduction of the PRE-SAFE® Brake. Beyond this, Mercedes innovations such as the Intelligent Light System with 5 light functions and PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant safety were also part of the vehicle’;s standard equipment.

The new S-Class Coupé and its innovations seamlessly continue the tradition
of large coupés into the future.

The new S 65 AMG Coupe offers unique Exclusivity and Performance

The S 65 AMG Coupé is the new twelve-cylinder top-of-the-range model in the S-Class Coupé series. Unique drive comfort, benchmark performance and exquisite appointments are all hallmarks of this 2-door vehicle. The irresistible contours of the V12 Coupé are accentuated by a host of expressive design elements in high-sheen chrome. The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, with an output of 463 kW and 1000 newton metres of torque, is unique in its segment, as is the AMG sports suspension, based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL with curve tilting function and ROAD SURFACE SCAN.

“There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S 65 AMG Coupé. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupé surpasses even the highest of expectations,” says Florian Seidler Executive Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa.

Mercedes-AMG’;s unique range and long V12 tradition

Coupé, Sedan, Roadster and Off-roader: following the S 65 AMG, the SL 65 AMG and the    G 65 AMG, the new S 65 AMG Coupé is the 4th AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine. No other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as Mercedes-AMG. Back in 2003 the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupé with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL 65 AMG (C215 model series). Its successor, the CL 65 AMG (C216 model series) was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S 65 AMG Coupé.

Twelve-cylinder engines are still considered the pinnacle of engine design. Among connoisseurs the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine in particular is seen as an outstanding example of its type. Open the bonnet of the S 65 AMG Coupé, and it is immediately obvious why: the exclusive carbon fibre/aluminium engine cover is synonymous with the exceptional strengths of the V12 engine, built in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” principle. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’;s signature is also a clear testament to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’;s high-performance brand.

A sensational drive and effortlessly superior performance

The AMG V12 delivers a peak output of 463 kW and a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres – resulting in effortlessly superior performance: the S 65 AMG Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). In other respects, the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine assures a sensational drive: stylish drive comfort, tremendous pulling power and effortless power delivery in all speed ranges are coupled with refined engine running characteristics and the distinctive typical sound of the AMG V12.

A glance at the consumption and emissions figures shows that the AMG V12 is fit for the future: with fuel consumption of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres as per NEDC combined (equivalent to 279 g/km CO2), the S 65 AMG Coupé is significantly more economical than all of its rivals. Compared with the previous CL 65 AMG model, consumption has been reduced by 2.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined).

Power transmission with 3 individual driving modes

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC is responsible for transmitting power to the rear axle. The transmission offers 3 individual modes: the driver can choose between Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M) by pushing a button on the centre console. Sport and Manual emphasise the vehicle’;s dynamism: the ultimate emotional appeal and tangible sportiness are ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection when shifting up a gear under full load. This shortens shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is activated in transmission mode “C”.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 20 kg

The S 65 AMG Coupé features a lithium-Ion battery as standard. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kg.

AMG sports suspension with curve tilting function

The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL delivers an incomparable driving sensation. The standard combination of Active Body Control (ABC), ROAD SURFACE SCAN and curve tilting function is unique. This function allows the S 65 AMG Coupé to lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting on the occupants is similar to driving in a banked curve. On country roads in particular, the curve tilting function heightens motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of 3 drive modes using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 15 to 180 km/h.

On bends the vehicle inclines automatically and continuously in fractions of a second – depending on the curve radius and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to 15 metres ahead, and an additional lateral acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function is making its debut in the S 63 AMG Coupé and S 65 AMG Coupé.

ROAD SURFACE SCAN is a technology that can detect surface undulations in advance with the help of a stereo camera. MAGIC BODY CONTROL then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation, effectively compensating for irritating chassis movement. Both suspension modes – “Comfort” and “Sport” – are also available here. In addition the AMG sports suspension on the S 65 AMG Coupé features specific elastokinematics – the driver therefore benefits from more directness with a dynamic driving style

Speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio

The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio perfectly complements the sophisticated suspension technology: it optimises vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels a sportily stiff level of steering assistance. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback from the road surface and steering precision.

Polished forged wheels with fully integrated wheel bolt cover

The S 65 AMG Coupé features forged wheels in a multi-spoke design, size 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with  255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tyres. The exclusive forged wheels of the V12 Coupé fascinate with their exceptional design which represents a contemporary interpretation of the classic sports car rims: each of the 16 spokes twists so that the light-catching contours radiate to the centre of the wheel hub. The effect: the wheel gives the impression of being even bigger.

The matchless visual superiority of the ceramic polished, high-sheen AMG forged wheels is the result of an elaborate finishing process: initial polishing is followed by manual grinding of the light-alloy wheels. 2 polishing stages using different grinding pellets ensure the desired deep sheen. Having been cleaned, the wheels undergo final treatment, including sealing with clear varnish.

As standard the forged wheels feature a high-quality, screw-on, fully integrated wheel bolt cover in forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG lettering is incorporated into the rim as a design element. 3 further forged wheels in the same format are available as optional alternatives – one design variant with a matt black finish and high-sheen rim flange.

Optional ceramic high-performance composite brake system

The AMG high-performance composite brake system features brake callipers with a grey finish. Red callipers are available as an option. A ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. The design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort.

Design: irresistible contours, lavishly accentuated with chrome

Supreme sportiness combined with the sensual clarity typical of Mercedes-Benz – the irresistible contours of the S 65 AMG Coupé are a captivating sight. V12-specific features include the countless design elements in high-sheen chrome at the front, sides and rear which are particularly effective in conjunction with dark pain2rk: the large central Mercedes star on the front apron, the “twin blade” radiator grille, all of the air intake grilles, the trim strip on the “A-wing”, the side flics (air deflector elements) and the front splitter are chromed-trimmed. The 3-dimensional front splitter reduces lift at the front axle, while the gap above the front splitter ensures an effective flow of air to the separate engine oil cooler behind it.

At the side, the eye is drawn to the “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the wings and the high-sheen chrome inserts in the side skirts – which harmonise perfectly with the high-sheen polished forged wheels. The rear view is also memorable: the AMG sports exhaust system’;s 2 chromed twin tailpipes in V12 design are integrated into the rear apron. Above the distinctive diffuser insert, painted in high-gloss black, the trim element forms an effective contrast: It echoes the design of the “A-wings” on the front apron and is finished in high-sheen chrome.

Interior: equipment, quality and ambience of the highest standard

The extraordinary character is also evident on the inside: the S 65 AMG Coupé welcomes its occupants with an incomparably exquisite ambience. This 2-door car features the finest materials, the highest manufacturing quality and an extensive range of standard equipment. In visual terms, the interior is dominated by the sports seats. The upholstery in designo AMG Exclusive nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in a diamond-pattern design boasts delineated perforations: the perforations deliberately avoid the areas where stitching features in the nappa leather. The result is exceptionally neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality.

Exclusively developed AMG sports seats ensure optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features. More contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges feature as standard on all 4 backrests, and the AMG logo is embossed on the front centre console.

Other features of the Exclusive package include the nappa leather roof liner, a leather-lined dashboard, door centre panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, chromed door pins and AMG stainless steel door sill panels, illuminated in white. Customers ordering designo AMG Exclusive nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, porcelain/espresso brown, saddle brown/black and crystal grey/black.

New sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design

The new 3-spoke sports steering wheel allows perfect vehicle control. It features shift paddles, a distinctly contoured rim, trimmed with perforated leather in the grip area, and a metal insert featuring AMG lettering.

Another typical AMG speciality is the AMG instrument cluster: information on the engine speed, vehicle speed and much more appears on 2 animated round dials on the 31.2 centimetre, high-resolution colour TFT display. The typography, the needles in red/silver, the speedometer with its 360 km/h scale and the “V12 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter all have a specifically AMG look. When the driver’;s door is opened, an AMG start-up screen appears on the right-hand display, while an animated S 65 AMG Coupé appears in the instrument cluster.

Extensive standard equipment with head-up display and touchpad

The extensive range of standard equipment for the S 65 AMG Coupé includes the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects key information such as the vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation directions, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen. The visualisation of the engine speed and the current gear is exclusive to AMG. In Manual transmission mode, a coloured upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are also protected onto the windscreen. The virtual colour display, measuring 21 x 7 centimetres, appears to hover above the bonnet at a distance of around 2 metres from the driver. The innovative Mercedes-Benz touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. In contrast to conventional systems, the touchpad can be used to operate all of the infotainment functions. The input area is approximately 6.5 x 4.5 centimetres in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad.

Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety

The S 65 AMG Coupé also sets new standards in terms of active and passive safety: what began with PRE-SAFE® 10 years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS is now leading to a new dimension in driving. Comfort and safety have merged into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive. New systems make the new S-Class Coupé even more comfortable and safe.

The new S 65 AMG Coupe offers unique Exclusivity and Performance

The new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe

The new S 63 AMG Coupé is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range. Exciting lines underpin this 2-door model’;s design. Dominance and sensual purity combine to lend the vehicle irresistible presence and effortlessly superior sportiness. Equally impressive is the combination of high driving dynamics, ambitious lightweight construction and ground-breaking efficiency.

As the most powerful member of the BlueDIRECT engine family, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine is a paragon of poise and assurance. Boasting an output of 430 kW and 900 Nm of torque, the S 63 AMG Coupé delivers exceptional performance with remarkably low fuel consumption. A world first is the curve tilting function, part of the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system, to further enhance both driving pleasure and comfort (optional S 500 Coupé).

“The new S 63 AMG Coupé is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment,” says Florian Seidler, Executive Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa.

65 kilograms lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight Performance

The S 63 AMG Coupé is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight construction has reduced the vehicle weight by 65 kilograms – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite braking system.

Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight improves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio of 3.41 kg/hp results in effortlessly superior performance: the S 63 AMG Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 to 4.3 seconds, depending on model variant, and goes on to reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).  With the optional AMG Driver’;s, top speed is increased to 300 km/h.

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 430 kW and 900 Nm of torque, the AMG 8-cylinder unit from the BlueDIRECT engine family meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL 63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 30 kW and torque by 100 Nm. Yet the S 63 AMG Coupé still consumes less fuel: The NEDC combined figure of 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres makes the 2-door model the most fuel-efficient model in its competitive segment. This reduction of up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres and compliance with emissions standard show that performance, efficiency and environmental compatibility are by no means mutually exclusive at Mercedes-AMG.

AMG sports exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps

Emotive and sporty performance or restrained and relaxing cruising: the
S 63 AMG Coupé even has a choice of bespoke sounds. The AMG sports exhaust system meets individual driver requirements as it has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the 8-cylinder biturbo engine’;s sound is more understated. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, hallmark AMG emotive engine sound.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the 8-cylinder biturbo engine for
the S 63 AMG Coupé is assembled by hand at the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines in Affalterbach according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’;s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’;s high-performance brand.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine. Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the 2 key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can configure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are 3 modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). The ECO start/stop function is fitted as standard.

MAGIC BODY CONTROL standard for the S 63 AMG Coupé

When it comes to the AMG sports suspension: the rear-wheel-drive S 63 AMG Coupé is equipped with MAGIC BODY CONTROL as standard.

ff17f AMG Coupe 1

Curve tilting function is a world first

There is also a world first for series-produced cars in the shape of the curve tilting function. This function allows the S 63 AMG Coupé to lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of 3 drive modes using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 15 to 180 km/h.

In addition to the curve tilting function, the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system includes ROAD SURFACE SCAN and Active Body Control (ABC) as standard. With Active Body Control the suspension struts are equipped with hydraulic cylinders (so-called plungers), in order to adjust the force in each strut individually. Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function shifts the base point of each individual strut.

ROAD SURFACE SCAN is a technology that can detect surface undulations in advance with the help of a stereo camera.  MAGIC BODY CONTROL then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. Both suspension modes – “Comfort” and “Sport” – are also available here. The AMG-specific elastokinematics also ensure more directness when adopting a dynamic driving style.

Systematic lightweight construction: AMG forged wheels as standard

The S 63 AMG Coupé is equipped with AMG forged light-alloy wheels as standard. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower unsprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S 63 AMG Coupé is fitted with multi-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish – 8.5 x 19 at the front and 9.5 x 19 at the rear, with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tyres respectively.

Optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tyres respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screw-type and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the 10 spokes. As an option, these forged wheels are also available painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange. Alternatively, forged wheels of the same sizes in a 5-twin-spoke design painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and a black wheel bolt cover are available.

6e218 AMG COUPE 2

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option
for the first time

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S 63 AMG Coupé, which is equipped with a weight-optimised, fade-resistant AMG high-performance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort.

Design: AMG combines sensual purity with effortlessly superior sportiness

The S 63 AMG Coupé also boasts exciting looks to emphasise its sporty performance: it exudes dominance and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous filigree aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the 3-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome. Whether the car is moving or not, distinctive AMG lettering on the side between the louvres leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach.  The A-wing is located below the radiator grille. This 3-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body colour, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylised “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver chrome optimises the flow of air to the cooling modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduces front-axle lift and optimises the vehicle’;s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-quality, 3-dimensional inserts in silver chrome. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S 63 AMG Coupé exude dynamism even when it is at a standstill. Further eye-catching features of the side design include the large AMG forged wheels. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in a new, contemporary typography on the front wings is another hallmark AMG design touch.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye straight away. The lower trim element in silver chrome is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The 2 chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with sports flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Stylised, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimise aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end design.

Interior: beguiling luxury, quality and sporty exclusivity

Opening the door reveals the beguilingly luxurious interior of the S 63 AMG Coupé: the instrument panel almost seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wrap-around design. High-quality materials and fine workmanship are combined with a sporty, exclusive design idiom. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electrical adjustment, Memory function and seat heating offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with piping and AMG badges on all 4 seat backrests together with the embossed AMG emblem on the armrest of the front centre console create an exquisite atmosphere on board.

The new 3-spoke AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim and perforated leather in the grip area allows perfect vehicle control. There is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert. New aluminium shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gear and enhance dynamism. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT colour display as an AMG instrument cluster with 2 animated round dials. In addition to the specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

The new, innovative touchpad, fitted as standard, makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. The safety and assistance systems are the same as those for the S 500 Coupé.

059e9 AMG COUPE 4

Even more exclusivity: the S 63 AMG Coupé “Edition 1″

One particularly exclusive model in the range is the S 63 AMG Coupé “Edition 1″, which will be available for a limited period. The expressive arrangement of exclusive exterior and interior details arouses pure fascination. Swarovski crystals in the LED high-performance headlamps lend the car an irresistible look on the outside, while the Exclusive Interior package creates an even more exquisite ambience on the inside. The latter includes AMG sports seats upholstered in designo Exclusive nappa leather in crystal grey/black or Bengal red/black with contrasting topstitching and piping. In keeping with this colour scheme, the upper section of the dashboard, the front and rear centre armrests, and the door linings are trimmed in nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, while the roof liner and the sun screens are in DINAMICA microfibre. Further features of the “Edition 1″ include AMG Exclusive floor mats with nappa leather edging, door sill panels with illuminated AMG lettering and a high-gloss black poplar wood trim. The AMG sports steering wheel has “Edition 1″ lettering.
Night View Assist Plus is fitted as standard.

This automobile ought to wear laurels.

If an automaker’s accomplishment actually had been just about the cars, as the industry shibboleth has it, Cadillac would be riding high. Take the object of this test, the new-for-2015 ATS coupe. It proved itself a worthy entry-luxury sports coupe by just about every measure imaginable, and it is 1 of the most modest Cadillacs you can get, packing a 2.-liter turbo 4 with a 6-speed manual gearbox in a compact 2-door. Delightful to drive, properly appointed, and correctly built, it joins the CTS sedan (one particular of our 10Best Cars winners) as a globe-class contender.

And but, headline after headline is about how Cadillac is “struggling,” its sales volumes down, its leaders stirring new controversies with every pronouncement about how they’re going to “fix” things by moving the marketing group to New York, stripping the wreath from the crest on the badge, changing the naming scheme, pursuing an ambitious greater-price approach, and investing heavily to expand the range of goods. If the secret sauce is great automobiles, then what’s all that fuss about?

About the Vehicle

On the proof of the ATS, Cadillac is producing genuinely great automobiles. Some fantastic ones, even. Aside from its drivetrain, this example was no stripper: It arrived at the test track wearing the variety-topping Premium trim, which lifts the MSRP from the base $ 38,990 to $ 48,090. Aside from the usual abundance of creature comforts and showy technologies that come with such a designation and yet another 91 Benjamins, the Premium trim brings GM’s Magnetic Ride Manage variable suspension and a restricted-slip differential, both helpful contributors to the ATS’s superb handling and more than-the-road functionality.

At the track, the turbo-4/manual combo delivered a -to-60-mph run of 5.7 seconds, just .3 longer than accomplished by the previously tested V-6/automatic ATS coupe, and finished the quarter-mile sprint in 14.1 seconds although performing 101 mph. Great numbers. It surrenders a half-second to 60 mph but finishes the quarter-mile in a dead heat with the BMW 428i that is the most direct competitor. And this ATS handily beat Munich’s base coupe in deceleration and roadholding by braking from 70 mph in only 156 feet and clawing the skidpad at .92 g.

When we pitted the 2.-liter/manual-gearbox Cadillac and BMW sedans against a single an additional in a comparison test, the BMW won but the Detroit entry’s engine has because been recalibrated and delivers a lot a lot more torque earlier in the rev band. It nevertheless can not match the simple-spinning eager character of the BMW’s mill, but it lands a stronger punch. This coupe was but 2 pounds heavier than the sedan with the same drivetrain in that comparo and 86 pounds lighter than the V-6 ATS coupe. It all appears to have come off the front axle, as the balance shifts rearward from 52./48. percent with the 6 to 50.7/49.3 in this auto.

And the coupe expands on the “fun to drive” components we located most appealing in the sedan. It has a sweetly balanced, light and lively character with crisp turn-in response, a precise shifter that’s exciting to use, brakes that are not only strong but reassuringly effortless to modulate, and a controlled ride cost-free of the excesses of roll, pitch, or head-toss.

No automobile is ideal, of course, and this a single may well have drawn a lot more attention if the 2-door looked a tiny much less like the sedan, bolder and more daring. No 1 looks at a 4-series or an Audi A5 and says, “That looks just like the sedan without the rear doors.” Some say that about the ATS coupe, noting that the prior-generation CTS coupe was far much more distinctive. It was also tougher to see out of and the expressive style didn’t result in several sales, so this a lot more conservative strategy with the ATS is understandable. It might appear much better without having a B-pillar, but so may the 4-series and the Lexus RC, and these, too, had to yield to the require for structural rigidity and side-impact security.

Aspirations and Costs

There was only one particular extracost option on this example (the manual is a no-price option more than the standard 6-speed automatic): $ 1295 for the upgraded Kona brown leather with jet-black accents that dressed up the cabin. We liked it, but the normal cabin trimmings already meet higher standards for materials and fit. The bottom line falling just shy of $ 50K reflects Cadillac’s conviction that premium-grade automobiles must wear premium-grade stickers. Some of us have opined that this strategy is a tad ambitious—or just plain as well much. In this case, we spec’d out a 428i with equivalent gear and rang up a $ 55,000 tab. No further comment.

Cadillac currently builds cars as good as (or far better than) those from German and Japanese luxury marques. Yes, it could stand for that accolade to spread across a wider range of its goods, especially in the crossover segment, but the past couple of years suggest that future models in the pipeline need to do fine. And however, there’s all that ill news in the wind. Accomplishment should not be only about the vehicles. If Cadillac has to pay a lot more interest to dealers and marketing and brand-creating, okay, so lengthy as it keeps building cars like this ATS. Due to the fact generating wonderful vehicles is where it begins, and Cadillac has a powerful running start.

BMW’;s heavyweight 2-doors get light updates.

The BMW M6 is a paradoxical automobile. Its name harks back to an epic road-burning coupe, a single with a race-derived inline-6 engine, but in its present type it is a gigantic and heavy luxury machine that just occurs to be quick. In each coupe and convertible types, the M6 weighs in at about 2 tons, heft that’s overcome making use of a 560-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-7 Against this discussion of mass, let us introduce the 2015 M6—it’s nevertheless big and porky, but it receives a light freshening this year, just as its 4-door Gran Coupe and pedestrian 2-door 6-series siblings do.

Really, light doesn’t even start to describe the alterations BMW has created to the M6 for 2015. The organization changed virtually absolutely nothing about the car’s design and style. Whilst the regular 6-series receives new, reduce front air intakes that are painfully reminiscent of Mercedes-AMG, the M6 keeps its previous “jetfighter” appear intact, full with an appropriately jet-styled central front air intake and its host of subtle aerodynamic components.

Only the headlights are changed, possessing switched to normal full-LED illumination and seeing the turn-signal components moved from the bottom to the prime of the units. For the cabin, there are a few new colors and trim alternatives, and the infotainment technique now delivers a lap timer application as properly as GoPro video-camera integration. We’ve sampled BMW’s embedded GoPro camera controls in a new M3 sedan and identified the widget nifty, if slightly restricted compared to the similar GoPro iPhone app.

There are no changes to the M6’s great powertrain. The 560-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 and 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission remain, and the pair delivers exhilarating performance. Once again, a 6-speed manual transmission occupies the selection sheet as a no-expense item BMW wouldn’t offer the stick have been it not for the U.S. market, which demanded it stayed. Perhaps there’s hope left for the original M6’s race-automobile-for-the-street vision.

Down the road, BMW will probably provide a Competition Package, as it did starting with the 2014- model-year M5 and M6. In these cars, the kit raised the V-8’s output to 575 horsepower, added a sports exhaust system, and modified the hydraulic power steering for far more directness. Offered how the base M6’s mechanical setup enters 2015 unchanged, don’t anticipate the Competition Package’s upgrades to deviate from the present tune.

Sadly, BMW’s mid cycle update for the M6 does not consist of any sort of diet. Stripping out some weight would go a lengthy way toward producing the effective coupe and convertible duo more engaging to drive. Of course, automakers tend to stray from significant light-weighting measures when carrying out something brief of redesigning a model totally, but at least BMW’s updates for the attractive and highly capable M6 had been light.
