Volvo Selects South Carolina as Location for First U.S. Plant, Breaks Ground this Fall

dab42 Volvo XC90 Torslanda plant 626x416

A former timber plantation in a sleepy southern town will be place back to operate constructing new Volvos. In the initial Swedish-Chinese-South Carolinian collaboration of its kind, Volvo is scheduled to break ground on a $ 500-million factory this fall.

Because late March, when Volvo announced it would construct an American plant with capacity for 25,000 cars a year—nearly double what it sold right here in 2014—the automaker turned down a proposal near Savannah, Georgia, and turned its focus to the Palmetto State, which agreed to offer you incentives worth up to $ 120 million. Volvo has not announced which models would roll down the line when construction finishes in 2018 or what percentage will be exported. (There’s also no word as to whether or not this deal will bring South Carolina its first IKEA store.)

Volvo plans to employ up to 2000 personnel, and you can bet your sweet tea that the UAW will not come knocking. Throughout Volkswagen’s union debates in neighboring Tennessee last winter, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley mentioned she wore high heels to stomp unions out of her state. “You’ve heard me say a lot of times I put on heels. It is not for a style statement,” she stated. “It’s simply because we’re kicking them every single day, and we’ll continue to kick them.” In the lengthy term, Volvo expects to employ 4000 individuals. The plant will be Volvo’s fifth following its 2 Swedish and 2 Chinese factories.

Volvo says it will use a large chunk of the 6800-acre Camp Hall Plantation, situated about 40 miles northwest of Charleston (exactly where one of 2 main ports is situated) and closer nonetheless to Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van plant. According to The Columbia State, Volvo filed an environmental permit for 575 acres with an additional 322 acres accessible for expansion.

Offered Volvo’s languishing volume amongst an industry that has noticed nearly every brand bounce back from the recession, the South Carolina plant will probably export half, if not a lot more, of the vehicles it builds. A planned lineup expansion into compact crossovers and upscale S90s will assist fill the factory floor. But far more telling is what Geely, Volvo’s owner since 2010, may do with a large car-assembly plant sitting on inexpensive land and a state willing to do whatever it requires to boost employment. Could this be the very first step to American-made, Chinese-branded automobiles? If Volvo wanted to export vehicles cheaply, it could have constructed a plant in Mexico, a nation that is tariff-free to most European and Latin American countries. More than shiny XC90s, we’re betting Geely desires to win in America.

This 900-hp, V-8–Powered VW Passat Will Invest Its Life Sideways

f8d8b Tanner Fousts Monster Energy Volkswagen Passat Drift Car PLACEMENT 626x382

Volkswagen’s current Passat mid-size sedan is good adequate, getting solidly constructed and anonymously handsome, and it even topped a comparison test. Yet, with a maximum of 280 horsepower accessible from the factory, fascinating is one issue the Passat is not. Guess what? Tanner Foust’s VW Passat is exciting—but a Formula Drift automobile sort of has to be.

Since front-wheel drive and less than 300 horsepower can’t crack a pro drift ride’s spec sheet, Tanner’s Passat pushes power to its rear wheels. Oh, and it has 900 horsepower thanks to a nitrous-fed V-8. It is sort of like a TDI—if your definition of TDI is “Totally Damn Insane.”

Certainly, Tanner Foust’s Rockstar Energy/Nitto Tire–sponsored Passat has practically nothing at all in frequent with regular factor Passat models save for its vague resemblance to a single. Besides the 450-cubic-inch V-8 stuffed into its nose, Foust’s drift car packs a 4-speed dog-type transmission, RS-R custom coil-overs, Recaro seats, a custom roll cage, a giant APR Overall performance rear wing, and new Nitto NT05 tires. That spec sheet hardly captures the sheer awesometude of the drift Passat—the point is stanced out on 17-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels and sports an appropriately wild Rockstar Energy livery.

Do we want one of these Passats? Totally, but we almost certainly wouldn’t be able to whip it sideways around a Formula Drift course with practically the élan of 3-time U.S. RallyCross champion and 2-time Formula Drift champion Foust. Nevertheless, we’d love to attempt. In the meantime, might we suggest that Volkswagen launch a new line of grossly overpowered “TDI” models?

Revealed! 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: They’re Critical This Time

The final-generation Chevy Malibu hybrid was sort of an also-ran amongst H-labeled sedans: Greatest characterized as a “mild” hybrid method, the getup netted EPA ratings of just 26 mpg city and 34 highway. Not specifically a Prius fighter. But for 2016, as component of a complete Malibu redesign, Chevrolet ultimately saw fit to give the hybrid variant a gas-electric drivetrain to be taken seriously.

The new Malibu Hybrid draws on the lessons that Chevy discovered in generating the upcoming second-generation Volt plug-in hybrid. The new ’Bu can whisper along on electric-only power—something the final-generation automobile was incapable of—at speeds up to 55 mph. At time of writing, Chevrolet was not capable to provide exact estimates for electric-only variety or EPA-verified fuel economy, but the organization says it expects a combined fuel-economy rating exceeding 45 mpg.

Component of that newfound thriftiness comes from the new hybrid drivetrain. The petrol-powered half is an all-new 1.8-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder, a direct-injected unit that is larger and far more muscular than the 1.5-liter discovered in the 2016 Chevy Volt. The 1.8-liter is teamed with a 2-motor electric drivetrain that is largely related to the new Volt’s.

With both the gasoline engine and the electric motors working in concert, the drivetrain puts out a total of 182 horsepower. When it’s time to hit the whoa pedal on all these ponies, a Volt-derived regenerative braking system recharges the 80-cell, 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack stowed beneath the trunk floor.

The Malibu hybrid also functions a nifty Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery technique, scavenging thermal energy from the gas engine’s exhaust system to heat the cabin and speed engine warm-up in cold weather. Active grille shutters (which are also found on LS and LT nonhybrid models) and a slightly lowered ride height additional help fuel efficiency.

So, too, does the new car’s weight loss. Chevy says the 2016 Malibu is much more than 300 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. This is in spite of increasing in length, which sees the Malibu add some much-necessary rear legroom.

With the Volt-derived drivetrain, Chevy hopes to ideal the hybrid variants of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata. The bogey to beat, nonetheless, is the Honda Accord hybrid, which tops the segment with an EPA combined rating of 47 mpg. We’ll have to wait on official word from the EPA—as properly as our own driving experience—before we take Chevy at its word on the “combined rating north of 45 mpg” claim. When the car goes on sale in the 4th quarter of this year, the challenge then for Chevrolet will be to get people to believe “Malibu” when they’re pondering “hybrid.”

I know I know it’s one more blooming BlueStream, but I just cannot help it. You know I get these infatuations with particular trucks and I undoubtedly have the blues at the moment. On my way residence down the A12 to Colchester and just as I’m about to come off at my junction there is this lay by which is where the 300 yard marker is for the junction. The lay by was empty and it’s a extremely clear evening, I saw the back finish of a quite sensible frigo trailer and the unmistakeable blue shine at the front end.. I went property and told the wife that I would be pooping out about 10pm when the site visitors on the A12 quietened down. For what ever cause Mrs Blog doesn’t bat an eyelid when I say I’m going back to a darkened lay by, she knows why. For what ever purpose my passion for trucks more than takes and I just have to go back and try and get a photo.

Now a truck photo in a lay by isn’t also considerably of a dilemma, or so you would feel

  1. The truck is at the finish of the lay by

  2. The street lights are in the centre of the carriageway and finish about half way along the layby

  3. The layby is a drive by means of a single with a little kerb separating it from the carriageway

  4. There is no light on the front grill of the truck

  5. My camera requirements a tripod to take night images

  6. There is still lots of traffic

  7. I don’t want the police to turn up considering I’m about to run out on front of the traffic!

I managed to get some ideas on how to use my camera by way of the Canon G12 group on Facebook. I nonetheless, have Mr Jensen Chua’s directions saved on my phone and as you can see he knows his sh*t. They have come out quite effectively. All these photographs have a 15 second exposure as there was no light at the front of the truck. Placing my camera on a tripod on the outside edge of the kerb of the lay by was the greatest idea nor was placing the camera in the middle of the drive by way of lane of the lay by………..but it was worth it, I’m quite pleased with the benefits. Thanks Jensen and thanks to Neil Jarrold who recommended employing the vehicle lights to assist, so I put the reverse lights on the car, in order to place a little light on the front grill.

I consider the reason why I adore the BlueStream so significantly is purely the colour.  I seem to get blinkered by a beautiful shade of blue and it appears to just lure me in. Romance isn’t dead Richie! Helped by getting attached to a 730hp Scania V8 in this case, it truly is a leading looking motor. My only thoughts are it need to appear even more great all lit up, pity the driver was currently in bed. The BlueStreams are available worldwide, but I wonder if this is the only one particular operated out of Czech Republic??

Avoid Murder on the Road this Easter Weekend – Don’t Drive Drunk!

;

As Easter weekend approaches, South African’s will make their yearly migration to holiday destinations to spend time with their families and loved ones. While many will be enjoying the traditional pickled fish, chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, others will lose their lives on the road.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) the Easter road death toll dropped from a staggering 241 in 2013, to only 193 in 2014. This is an indication that great headway has been made to reduce the road death toll in South Africa, unfortunately speed and alcohol remain the main reasons for road accidents. It is estimated that around 330 motorists were arrested over last year’s Easter weekend for drunken driving alone.

Wandile Dumakude, legal expert at LIPCO Law for All, explains that many South African’s think they know their drinking limits or have quick fix solutions to sober up,  but these limits usually do not measure up against those set by law or by the human body. “A person is over the legal limit if his breath alcohol content is in excess of 0.24mg per 1,000ml or his blood alcohol concentration in excess of 0.05g per 100ml. The rule of thumb for any motorist is a maximum of 1 unit per alcohol per hour. Biologically the human body can only process one unit every hour, despite drinking lots of water, strong black coffee or taking a cold shower. These tricks do little to help sober a person up,” says Dumakude.

But what does this mean in layman’s terms? Dumakude explains that “a 75ml glass of your favourite wine will amount to about one unit. But be cautious, because that means a 250ml glass will amount to 3, 3 units. A spirit cooler or beer amounts to roughly about 1,25 units, while a 25ml tot of whiskey or brandy to a unit. Cocktails and shooters are a bit more tricky and dangerous, as one glass could easily amount to 2-4 units.”

Many South African’s are aware of the fact that many drivers are let off the hook due to unreliable blood alcohol specimens, and fail to comprehend the seriousness of the crime. If found guilty, a person faces 6 years imprisonment or a R120 000 fine, a suspended driver’s licence and criminal record. That is not even mentioning the repercussions should someone die as a result of a road accident. “The real reason people should not drive under the influence is the fact that they might cause the death of someone. You stand to face a charge of culpable homicide, and prosecutors are increasingly accusing motorists of murder.” Dumakude warns motorists.

What to do if a person is arrested for Drunken Driving:

1 Remain calm and collected. Do not resist arrest or become violent, even if force is used. You don’t want to prejudice your chances to be released on bail

2. You have the right to be treated with dignity and to remain silent Pay attention to whether you are informed of your rights (if at all) and other things said by the arresting officer.. You must however provide your full names. You have the right to phone one person (A friend/relative or Attorney).

3. You may not refuse to provide a blood sample. The district surgeon, a registered nurse, or prison medical officer will take a blood specimen within 2 hours of arrest and submit to the state laboratory for analysis.

4. Follow the instructions of the arresting officer. Chances are good that you will be kept at the police station until you have sobered up, and you may be released with a warning to appear before court within 48 hours. You may also be kept behind bars.

5. It is important to note the details and the name of the police station you are in, the case number for your case, the name of the investigating officer. Your attorney will require the info.

Considering that 65% of road accidents are related to alcohol abuse, let’s hope South African’s are responsible and put safety first this Easter weekend.

Czech This Bit of Blue

I know I know it is another blooming BlueStream, but I just can not assist it. You know I get these infatuations with certain trucks and I surely have the blues at the moment. On my way residence down the A12 to Colchester and just as I’m about to come off at my junction there is this lay by which is where the 300 yard marker is for the junction. The lay by was empty and it is a quite clear evening, I saw the back end of a really sensible frigo trailer and the unmistakeable blue shine at the front finish.. I went house and told the wife that I would be pooping out about 10pm once the visitors on the A12 quietened down. For what ever explanation Mrs Weblog does not bat an eyelid when I say I’m going back to a darkened lay by, she knows why. For what ever explanation my passion for trucks over requires and I just have to go back and try and get a photo.

Now a truck photo in a lay by isn’t too significantly of a problem, or so you would think

  1. The truck is at the finish of the lay by

  2. The street lights are in the centre of the carriageway and finish about half way along the layby

  3. The layby is a drive via 1 with a little kerb separating it from the carriageway

  4. There is no light on the front grill of the truck

  5. My camera demands a tripod to take night images

  6. There is nonetheless lots of targeted traffic

  7. I do not want the police to turn up pondering I’m about to run out on front of the targeted traffic!

I managed to get some suggestions on how to use my camera through the Canon G12 group on Facebook. I still, have Mr Jensen Chua’s instructions saved on my phone and as you can see he knows his sh*t. They have come out fairly nicely. All these pictures have a 15 second exposure as there was no light at the front of the truck. Placing my camera on a tripod on the outdoors edge of the kerb of the lay by was the greatest thought nor was placing the camera in the middle of the drive via lane of the lay by………..but it was worth it, I’m extremely pleased with the results. Thanks Jensen and thanks to Neil Jarrold who suggested employing the auto lights to help, so I put the reverse lights on the auto, in order to place a small light on the front grill.

I consider the cause why I really like the BlueStream so significantly is purely the colour.  I appear to get blinkered by a gorgeous shade of blue and it appears to just lure me in. Romance is not dead Richie! Helped by getting attached to a 730hp Scania V8 in this case, it truly is a best looking motor. My only thoughts are it need to appear even far more amazing all lit up, pity the driver was already in bed. The BlueStreams are offered worldwide, but I wonder if this is the only one operated out of Czech Republic??

A sign of life at Lotus.

The Lotus Evora 400, information of which were released ahead of its debut at the Geneva auto show subsequent month, falls some way quick of getting a main redesign—aesthetically “mild facelift” is a lot more like it. But at least the Evora 400 is lighter and faster than the version it replaces—both powerful Lotus attributes. It’s also simpler to get in and out of, and there’s a new, greater-good quality cabin, too. But the fundamentals are all unchanged: a bonded aluminum chassis, composite bodywork, and energy from a supercharged Toyota V-6 mounted amidships.

The numbers are undoubtedly impressive. The 3.5-liter engine has been tuned to provide 400 horsepower (a 55-hp enhance) and 302 lb-ft of torque. Together with a 49-pound weight reduction to a claimed 3119 pounds, the official zero-to-60-mph time is reduced to 4.1 seconds and the top speed boosted to 186 mph. The rear wing and diffuser are mentioned to provide 71 pounds of aerodynamic downforce at 150 mph, and Lotus says the Evora 400 is 6 seconds faster around its Hethel test track than the Evora S, matching the lap time of the Exige S.

In addition to the improved output, the vehicle gains a restricted-slip rear differential for the 1st time (with the manual gearbox only), along with slightly bigger brakes and lighter wheels (19 inches at the front, 20 inches at the rear). Lotus claims improved shift high quality and clutch action for the standard 6-speed manual, although the optional automatic once again uses Lotus’s push-button “PRND” interface and shift paddles.

Despite the fact that we’re not blown away by the mildly revised exterior styling, the new cabin does appear like a distinct improvement more than the previous Evora’s low-cost-feeling cockpit, with switchgear now marshaled at the best of the dashboard rather than in the difficult-to-see hinterland in between the steering wheel and the door. We even very like the natty shade of red leather trim in these official images. It nonetheless doesn’t look particularly modern day, but it no longer seems stuck in the 1990s.

Lotus has also delivered on its guarantee to increase access by reducing the width and height of the doorsills—they’re 1.7 inches narrower and 2.2 inches lower, which need to make getting in and out marginally less difficult. The new sports seats are claimed to be 13 pounds lighter, whilst the vestigial rear seats are 11 inches wider. There are also smart airbags, which means that, after the Evora’s 1-year exile from the U.S., the 400 will be on sale here this fall.

The huge question is how a lot it will cost. No U.S. figures have been released yet, but in the U.K., rates are set to rise by far more than 10 percent compared to the prior Evora S (to around £70,000). This for a car that wasn’t precisely flying off the shelves the last time it was provided in America, a car which is going to have to face the challenge of some newer rivals which includes the imminent new turbocharged Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S.

Far more Photos of the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor You Say? Why, Yes, Have This High-Res Goodness

2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

Ford may possibly have owned the 2015 Detroit auto show, but not every single element of it auto-show performance was to our liking. Take, for instance, Ford’;s debut of the epic 2017 F-150 Raptor. Positive, with an anticipated 450–500 horsepower, yoga-like levels of suspension articulation, and bad-ass appears, it’;s awesome. but why was the show-floor instance so . . . clean? C’;mon, Ford, get it together—cover this factor in mud STAT. The bright side is that the truck’;s cleanliness permitted us to capture its every single detail in these glorious pictures.

ce5b5 Raptor Flipbook 108 876x535

Like the original Raptor, the 2017 model wears huge “Ford” lettering across its grille, and, thanks to its width, federally mandated marker lights.

ce5b5 Raptor Flipbook 111 876x535

Oh, look, Ford slapped “Ford” lettering on the tailgate, also. Nice.

Sweet pumped-out fenders look even sweeter with gnarly decals.

This view greatest shows off the Raptor’;s added width relative to pedestrian F-150s.

In place of the outgoing Raptor’;s 411-hp 6.2-liter V-8, the new Raptor gets the very first of Ford’;s next-generation twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engines. Output is anticipated to crest 450 horsepower, far more than adequate to break cost-free from this caged auto-show purgatory.

Bolted to the new EcoBoost engine is Ford’;s first 10-speed automatic. Also sitting amidships? A novel transfer case that can switch in between standard locked 4-wheel drive and an automatic all-wheel drive setup.

As did the regular F-150, the Raptor switches to a fully aluminum body. The frame is nonetheless steel, and it has been reinforced relative to the non-Raptor F-150′s. Combined with a composite hood and front fenders, the new body supplies chop a claimed 500 pounds from the truck’;s curb w7

The slight stadium-truck-style upkick to the rear quarter panel is each new and amazing. Also new is a correct dual-exhaust technique with a pair of rear-bumper outlets.

In case you had been curious, yes, the 2017 Ford F-150′s doors do open. Just like a normal F-150′s, as well!

The 17-inch aluminum wheels look excellent, but the 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tires really steal the show.

Yes, that’;s a stripe marking top-dead center on the steering wheel. When you happen to be bouncing across the desert at triple-digit speeds, such a factor is really handy.

The Raptor will be available in 2 wheelbases when it goes on sale. A shorter 133-inch length (extended cab) and a longer 145-inch size for the 4-door SuperCrew model. You happen to be seeking at the extended-cab (SuperCab) model.

Remote-reservoir, internal bypass Fox Racing shocks are the Raptor’;s killer app, capable of chewing up large obstacles at speed and spitting them back out with no complaint. Ford upped the diameter of the shocks from 2.5 inches to 3. for 2017.

In addition to embiggening the shocks, Ford also increased suspension travel front and rear. The front now articulates a complete 11.2 inches, even though the strong rear axle can swing by way of a 12.1-inch variety. This need to make certain that Raptor owners see their fair share of consequence-free of charge jumps. Can you inform we’;re excited to drive this point?
