Mazda announces Recall Campaign on certain Mazda6 vehicles for airbags issue

Mazda outlined a concern affecting some Mazda6 vehicles equipped with a passenger-side air bag. The supplier of air bags, Takata Corporation, notified Mazda Southern Africa that the subject coverage of the recall campaign affects Mazda6 vehicles produced from April 2002 through June 2003 with model VIN code (GG). This concern had deemed a recall campaign necessary.

The recall is due to an inappropriate production condition and storage of the propellant in the inflator. The density of the propellant may be insufficient on the inflator for the passenger seat airbag. This might cause the propellant to ignite abnormally at the time of airbag deployment and potentially result in extremely high inner pressure of the inflator causing a rupture of the inflator case.  In a case of a rupture, the airbag might not deploy as designed and may lead to passenger injury.

There have been no recorded incidences on Mazda vehicles globally; however, there have been 3 recorded incidences on other brand vehicles. Since there is a potential that the same defect may occur on some Mazda vehicles, Mazda Southern Africa will conduct a repair procedure to replace the passenger-side air bag inflator with an improved unit on the possibly affected vehicles.

Mazda SA urges all owners with possibly affected Mazda6 vehicles to contact the Mazda SA Dealer Ne2rk or the Mazda SA Customer Care Centre on 0860 069 700 or email customercare@mazda.co.za.

The all-new Mazda6: Stunningly evolved functional design

;

6e020 Mazda 6
Mazda’;s new flagship simply begs to be driven. Designed to operate as an extension of the driver,  it is the second manifestation of the ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’; design theme. The Mazda6 is destined to turn heads, drawing upon the sleek beauty of the Mazda TAKERI and Mazda SHINARI concept cars. And with ultra-efficient SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY underneath, there are no concessions to performance or fuel economy.

The all-new Mazda6 – now in its third generation – is also the first mass-production model equipped with i-ELOOP, Mazda’;s unique regenerative braking system. It’;s the most recent ingredient to Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, the company’;s building block strategy for uncompromisingly efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles. i-ELOOP joins the innovative i-stop system and SKYACTIV powertrains, chassis and body introduced on the Mazda CX-5 to set new levels  for fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

“Drivers will experience a remarkably linear response from the choice of 3 SKYACTIV engines, one diesel and 2 petrol power plants transferring power to the wheels via 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The SKYACTIV-CHASSIS’;s clever steering and suspension ensure superior handling in a car that responds to driver input with precision. The SKYACTIV-BODY, meanwhile, offers class-leading safety thanks to highly rigid impact-absorbing structures and innovative load paths to disperse impact energy away from the cabin. And to help the driver prevent accidents from happening in the first place, the new Mazda6 features an impressive array of advanced active safety technologies. Even when a collision is unavoidable, they work to diminish its severity for occupants and pedestrians – and even the vehicle itself, says David Hughes Managing Director Mazda South Africa.

The new Mazda6′s interior, where form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit built to make driving as enjoyably effortless as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be. Even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards relative to the previous model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’;s field of view. Passengers find a relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features sporty comfort and segment-leading dimensions accompanied by the latest infotainment technology.

Mazda’;s designers and engineers have truly come up with a striking piece of machinery whose looks immediately divulge what’;s underneath. A symbiotic blend of sporty, linear performance and smooth refinement that’;s destined to exceed customers’; expectations in the CD-segment
