The All-New Lexus NX revealed

Bringing together striking design, free-spirited performance and innovative technology, the brand new Lexus NX is the luxury automaker’s first foray into the ultra-competitive compact SUV segment of the market.

Available from the 23rd February, the NX symbolises a new direction for Lexus. As Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing, points out: “The brand’s focus is on providing design-driven, driver-rewarding vehicles underpinned by Lexus’; advanced engineering and dynamic, efficient powertrains.”

Styling, of course, was key – the aim was to make a bold first impression and ensure the NX gets noticed. According to Hamman, this it certainly does: “Stylistically, the production package does not differ markedly from the extrovertly and aggressively crafted LF-NX concept that we showed back in 2013. What the NX designers have given us is an intelligent expression of the Lexus L-Finesse design language, retaining the sharp lines, wide, powerful stance and sporting feel of the original show car which gives it phenomenal on-road presence.”

But the newcomer is not just about the show – it’s got the go to match. The NX 200t is the first Lexus model to use the company’s new 175 kW, 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine. Nine years in development and debuting with technical innovations such as the Lexus-designed cylinder head with integrated 4-into-2 exhaust manifold (a world first) and twin-scroll turbocharger, the 1,998cc unit is matched to a newly developed 6-speed automatic transmission with a Drive Mode Select system.

Another technological tour-de-force featuring on the NX 200t is the Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel drive system, which maximises traction and cornering stability, while securing the best possible fuel efficiency. According to driving conditions, up to 50 per cent of available torque can be directed to the rear wheels.

The NX 200t is available at launch in 3 model grades – E, EX and dramatic F-Sport apparel. It’s offered alongside the highly efficient NX 300h hybrid which sports EX livery.

“I am confident that with all these combined elements we have created a new generation vehicle that looks, drives, feels and is more efficient than anything else on the market,” says Hamman.

Cologne, Germany, Feb. 3, 2015 - Ford today previewed the all-new Ford Focus RS, a high-performance road car that debuts the innovative Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive,  delivering class-leading cornering speed, thrilling performance and unbridled driving enjoyment.

The Focus RS – equipped with a special 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine engineered to produce well in excess of 320 PS – is the latest vehicle to be unveiled as part of a new era of Ford performance that will bring more than 12 performance vehicles to global customers by 2020.

In addition to pleasing enthusiasts, these vehicles help deliver the company’;s One Ford plan for profitable growth, product excellence and innovation in every part of its business.

“The all-new Focus RS is a serious machine with high-performance technology and innovative engineering that sets a new benchmark for driving exhilaration on the road and track,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company. “The RS line has a proud history of technical breakthroughs that have migrated to mainstream Fords to benefit all of our customers, and the new Focus RS is no exception. It’;s a great example of our passion for innovation through performance and creating vehicles that make people’;s hearts pound.”

Developed by a small team of Ford Performance engineers in Europe and US, the new Focus RS is the third generation of Focus RS cars, following models launched in 2002 and 2009. It will be the 30th car to wear the legendary RS badge, following such technology trendsetters as the 16-valve 1970 Escort RS1600, the turbocharged Sierra RS Cosworth of 1985 with its radical aerodynamics, and the 4-wheel-drive 1992 Escort RS Cosworth.

Sporting a dramatic exterior design that delivers enhanced aerodynamics and cooling, the new Focus RS offers technologies new to the RS marque including Ford SYNC connectivity system.

The all-new Focus RS is the first ever RS model that will be sold around the world and will be produced for all markets at Ford’;s Saarlouis, Germany, manufacturing plant beginning late this year.

“The new Focus RS represents Ford at its passionate best – delivering innovation, unmatched driving dynamics and stunning performance that was previously the sole province of high-priced performance luxury marques and exotics,” said Jim Farley, president, Ford of Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We are acutely aware of the benchmarks we have set ourselves with RS performance models through the years, and rest assured that this new car raises the game to a new level.

“Just as important is the fact that with technologies such as EcoBoost, we are able to demonstrate how an innovation that powers almost every car in our range can also be the heartbeat of our finest performance cars.”

Gymkhana and World Rallycross star Ken Block was brought on as a consultant on the all-new Focus RS and joined the Ford Performance team at the preview event in Cologne, Germany – the city where the RS legend was born in 1968 with the Ford 15M RS.

Innovative Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive offers unmatched handling

The all-new Focus RS exploits the innovative new Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring to deliver a new level of handling capability and driver enjoyment, combining outstanding traction and grip with unmatched agility and cornering speed.

The Ford Performance AWD system is based on twin electronically-controlled clutch packs on each side of the rear drive unit. These manage the car’;s front/rear torque split, and also can control the side-to-side torque distribution on the rear axle – delivering the “torque vectoring” capability, which has a dramatic impact on handling and cornering stability.

The control unit in the rear drive unit continuously varies the front/rear and side-to-side torque distribution to suit the current driving situation, monitoring inputs from multiple vehicle sensors 100 times per second. A maximum of 70 per cent of the drive torque can be diverted to the rear axle. Up to 100 per cent of the available torque at the rear axle can be sent to each rear wheel.

During cornering, the rear drive unit pre-emptively diverts torque to the outer rear wheel immediately based on inputs such as steering wheel angle, lateral acceleration, yaw and speed. This torque transfer has the effect of “driving” the car into the bend, achieving improved turn-in and stability, and virtually eliminating understeer.

The AWD system has been tuned to deliver exceptional grip – with lateral acceleration exceeding 1 g – and class-leading cornering speed and acceleration out of a bend. With neutral and adjustable limit handling, and the ability to achieve controlled oversteer drifts at the track; the Focus RS delivers the ultimate fun-to-drive experience.

“This AWD system is a breakthrough technology, capable of delivering supreme cornering and handling at the limit,” said Dave Pericak, director, Global Ford Performance. “We have ripped up the rulebook which says that AWD hatchbacks cannot be fun to drive, and have created a car which will surprise and reward in equal measure.”

To deliver optimum driving dynamics, the Ford Performance AWD system was calibrated alongside the car’;s advanced Electronic Stability Control, in particular the brake-based Torque Vectoring Control system that works in parallel with the torque-vectoring AWD.

Other exclusive chassis features include sports suspension with spring rates, bushes and anti-roll-bars all of which are stiffer than those found in the Focus ST, and 2-mode switchable dampers, which offer a firmer setting for track driving. A carefully tuned electric power-assisted steering system, working in combination with a more rigid front suspension knuckle design and shorter link arms, delivers connected and responsive steering with outstanding feel.

9ae26 Ford focus RS

“The Focus ST and Fiesta ST showed that we can achieve sporty steering feel with an EPAS system, and the RS raises the bar. We set out to provide keen drivers with steering which is very direct, precise and well balanced – and the RS delivers,” Pericak added.

Ford engineers worked closely with Michelin to develop a choice of high-performance 235/35 R19 tyres to complement the driving dynamics of the Focus RS; a standard Pilot Super Sport tyre for every-day use; and – for the first time on an RS – an optional Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre for enhanced vehicle dynamics on the track.

The vehicle’;s exterior design has also been developed to support the dynamic objectives. Careful aerodynamic optimisation of the front splitter, rear spoiler and underbody features eliminates lift forces, and the final design delivers a balanced performance with zero lift front and rear for optimum high-speed handling and stability.

Unique powertrain for increased output

Ford’;s EcoBoost technology powers the Focus RS and nearly every new Ford vehicle. The specially engineered 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine has levels of power and torque that translate into impressive acceleration when combined with the exceptional AWD traction.

Projected to deliver well in excess of 320 PS, the bespoke unit shares its fundamental structure with the all-aluminium 4-cylinder 2.3-litre engine in the all-new Mustang. This engine has, however, been significantly upgraded through a comprehensive package of design changes.

Increased output is generated by a new low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger with larger compressor that delivers significantly greater air flow, along with a much bigger intercooler to maximise charge density. Engine breathing also is enhanced through a less restrictive intake design, and a large-bore high performance exhaust system with an electronically controlled valve in the tailpipe that helps optimise the balance of back pressure and noise output.

The cylinder head is produced from an upgraded alloy material capable of withstanding higher temperatures, and is mounted on a more robust head gasket with improved thermal capability. The cylinder block employs stronger high-tensile cast iron liners.

Engine cooling also has been given the highest priority, with engineers creating additional space within the front of the vehicle to house a significantly larger radiator pack – the biggest ever fitted to a Focus – that provides the level of cooling demanded for hard circuit use.

Meticulous calibration work has ensured that the power unit delivers excellent low-end responsiveness with a powerful mid-range pull, climbing to a free-revving top-end up to a maximum rev limit of 6,800 rpm.

Inspiring performance demands an inspiring soundtrack. Ford Performance engineers have tuned the RS to deliver a rewarding and sporty sound character during spirited driving, with the distinctive burbles, pops and crackles that are a RS signature.

“This very special 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit will inspire drivers as they feel the surge of the turbo, and reward them as they take it to the red line – all delivered with a stirring sound guaranteed to put a smile on your face,” Pericak said.

The 6-speed manual transmission has been optimised for the enthusiast driver with a shorter gear lever to deliver faster and more accurate shifts. Both the transmission and the clutch have been upgraded with stronger components to cope with the engine’;s increased torque output.

With its high-efficiency EcoBoost design featuring direct fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing and advanced turbocharging, the engine also delivers significantly improved fuel consumption. With Auto-Start-Stop fitted as standard, preliminary figures indicate that CO2 emissions will be significantly reduced compared with the previous model.

High-performance design for stunning looks with optimum function

The Focus RS exterior design is both dramatic and functional, with a more powerful and muscular character. Designers worked closely with Ford Performance to ensure that the necessary functional attributes were achieved, focusing on the aerodynamic downforce and balance delivered by the design, as well as the cooling demands of the powertrain and brakes.

“This is the ultimate Focus – stunning to look at, and entirely fit for purpose,” said Joel Piaskowski, director, Design, Ford of Europe. “RS models have always been striking, high-performance cars where function is paramount. This new Focus RS is true to that heritage.”

Based on the new Focus, the RS features a powerful new front-end appearance with a bold upper trapezoidal grille above the deep front splitter, incorporating the largest possible apertures for engine cooling. A wide, muscular stance is emphasised by the lower wings and large outboard openings on each side of the car, which feed the brake cooling ducts and house vertically-mounted fog lamps.

At the rear, the fascia panel is dominated by the exceptionally large diffuser, which optimises air flow from under the vehicle to reduce drag, and contains the twin round high-performance exhaust outlets and, in Europe and Asia, a clear central fog lamp. The distinctive rear roof spoiler is carefully integrated with the car’;s silhouette through body-coloured side panels featuring a subtle embossed RS logo.

The dynamic side-profile is emphasised by sculptured rocker panels, and the bold wheel lips that house a choice of multi-spoke 19-inch RS alloy wheels – including a high-performance lightweight forged design finished in low-gloss black, which offers enhanced strength and impact resistance with weight savings of 1 kg per wheel.

Standard Bi-Xenon HID headlamps offer Adaptive Front Lighting, which adjusts the intensity and angle of the headlamp beams according to vehicle speed, steering angle and distance to objects for optimal illumination. Customers also can specify the latest Active City Stop automatic braking technology which operates at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).

The high-performance character of the RS is reflected inside the car with heavily-bolstered partial-leather Recaro sports seats as the centrepiece of the cockpit. Signature RS Recaro shell seats, with authentic motorsport microfibre fabric panels, are an option for customers in Europe and Asia.

The interior features the redesigned Focus control layout with its simpler, more intuitive design. SYNC connectivity provides access to audio, navigation, climate control and mobile phones via voice control, and via a high-definition, 8-inch colour touchscreen. Simple voice commands such as “Find a race track” enable RS owners to get instant directions to the nearest public circuit. SYNC also can be specified with Rear View Camera with park distance control, as well as a Sony premium sound system with 10-speakers including a subwoofer.

The RS driving experience is reinforced by a new flat-bottomed steering wheel with a soft-feel leather covered rim, alloy foot pedals, and unique instrument graphics within the main cluster. An additional bank of gauges above the centre console display turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure.

Throughout the cabin, the distinctive blue RS theme is echoed through stitching on the seats, steering wheel, floor mats and interior trim, the coloured graphic on the gear shifter, and via the RS logo itself, which is proudly displayed on the seats, steering wheel and door scuff plates.

4 striking exterior colours include Nitrous Blue, a vibrant 4-coat metallic finish exclusive to the RS, as well as Stealth Grey, Absolute Black and Frozen White. The car revealed in Cologne features the same special Liquid Blue colour scheme first seen on the all-new Ford GT revealed last month at the North American International Auto Show.

Rich heritage of innovation and performance

Since the first Ford RS models took to the road, the RS marque has been an essential element of Ford’;s DNA, delivering technical innovation and performance on road and track. Dating back to the early days of the company’;s success in “Rallye Sport,” the first RS models established a reputation for advanced technology and driving exhilaration that continues to this day.

“The all-new Focus RS is true to the core RS principles of innovative engineering and high performance. Driving enthusiasts have always aspired to own RS vehicles, and this is a heritage that inspires everyone within Ford,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe.

Through the years, RS models have consistently pioneered innovative performance technologies, from powerful naturally-aspirated and turbocharged powertrains and sophisticated aerodynamic aids to advanced front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive drivelines.

Vehicles that pioneered AWD technology include the exotic 1984 mid-engined RS200 destined for Group B rallying, the 1990 Sierra RS Cosworth 4×4, the spectacular Escort RS Cosworth and the 1994 Escort RS2000 4×4.

The original 215 PS Focus RS from 2002 featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged power unit and an advanced limited-slip differential. The second generation model sent 305 PS through its front wheels with a ground-breaking RevoKnuckle suspension design.

Focus RS, which builds on a pedigree of driving excellence dating back to the first Ford RS in 1968, was last introduced in 2009.

“To earn the RS badge, the vehicle has to be a no-compromise driver’;s car that can deliver exceptional performance on the track when required while providing excellent every day driving,” Nair said.

In addition to pleasing enthusiasts, vehicles such as Focus RS help deliver the company’;s One Ford plan for profitable growth, product excellence and innovation in every part of its business. Performance vehicle sales are growing around the world – with sales in Europe and the U.S. up by 14 percent and 70 percent respectively, since 2009.

Powering performance vehicles, such as the Fiesta ST and Focus ST, is Ford’;s award-winning EcoBoost engine range. Since the introduction of the EcoBoost engine in 2009, Ford has produced more than 2 million EcoBoost engines globally.

“EcoBoost is a strong example of how we are migrating technology and engineering across our line-up, ensuring our vehicles are fun to drive – not just our Ford Performance line-up,” Nair said. “From our most nimble Fiesta to our hard-working full-size pickups and racing vehicles, our line-up benefits from the innovations we deliver at the track and at the limit.”

New global team

The new Ford Performance organisation unifies Team RS, Ford SVT, and Ford Racing globally, serving as an innovation laboratory and test-bed to create unique performance vehicles, parts, accessories and experiences for customers.

This includes developing innovations and technologies in aerodynamics, light-weighting, electronics, powertrain performance and fuel efficiency that can be applied more broadly to Ford’;s product portfolio.

In addition to race tracks around the world, the team also will develop new vehicles and technologies at Ford’;s engineering centres globally and at a new technical centre in Charlotte, North Carolina. This state-of-the-art facility helps the team deliver racing innovations as well as advancing tools for use in performance vehicles and daily drivers alike.

The Ford Performance organization is led by Dave Pericak, who has been appointed director, Global Ford Performance.

Heritage of Performance Innovation

Performance and racing are deeply embedded in Ford’;s DNA, dating back 113 years ago when Henry Ford won the Sweepstakes Race against Alexander Winton – then America’;s greatest racer.

Following a remarkable upset victory in front of Detroit’;s business elite, some of whom immediately came forward to back whatever automotive venture Henry had in mind, Ford Motor Company opened 18 months later.

“Ford still races for the same reasons Henry Ford did in 1901 – to prove out our products and technologies against the very best in the world,” Nair said. “The Ford Performance team will continue to pursue performance innovation, ensuring we can deliver even more coveted performance cars, utilities and trucks to customers around the world.”

All-New Mazda2 Wins Good Design Gold Award 2014 In Japan

The soon to be launched in South Africa, all-new Mazda2 wins Good Design’;s Gold Award in Japan

After just recently winning Car Of The Year Japan, Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the all-new Mazda2 received the Good Design Award’;s Good Design Gold Award (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Minister’;s Award), sponsored by public interest incorporated foundation, Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

Following the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 the soon to be launched in South Africa, all-new Mazda2 is the 4th in Mazda’;s line-up of new-generation products which feature the full range of SKYACTIV technology* and KODO-Soul of Motion design.

Aspiring to create a new-generation subcompact that would shatter people’;s preconceived notions about this class of vehicle, Mazda packed all the new technology and design ideas that have defined the automaker’;s new-generation models into the compact body of the Mazda2. KODO design has been evolved to give the model a sense of life and an undeniable presence that belies the vehicle’;s compact size. With the interior, Mazda designers aimed to set a new global benchmark for the segment. Every element, from spatial composition and forms, through to colour coordination and textures, was drastically transformed to realize a feeling of quality that exceeds the class.

The Japan Institute of Design Promotion said about the Mazda2, “Mazda has taken all of the KODO design from the last few years and condensed it into this compact body. The tense undulations of the body surfaces remind one of a wild animal in pursuit of prey, and every line expresses a sense of speed. The exterior is so dynamic it is hard to believe this form was achieved on a small city car. Not only does the quality feel of the interior exceed the standards of the class, the natural driving position made possible by moving the front wheels forward means you never feel like you are driving a small car. Along with the SKYACTIV clean diesel engine this model lets you enjoy the most fundamental pleasure of the automobile-moving your own hands and feet to get where you want to go-with all 5 senses.”

Established in 1957, the Good Design Award is Japan’;s only comprehensive program for the evaluation and commendation of design. In 2014, a total of 1,258 designs were awarded the Good Design Award, among which the highest scoring 100 were named to the Good Design Best 100. The Good Design Gold Award is awarded to the most outstanding designs among the Good Design Best 100.

The all-new Mazda6: Stunningly evolved functional design

;

6e020 Mazda 6
Mazda’;s new flagship simply begs to be driven. Designed to operate as an extension of the driver,  it is the second manifestation of the ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’; design theme. The Mazda6 is destined to turn heads, drawing upon the sleek beauty of the Mazda TAKERI and Mazda SHINARI concept cars. And with ultra-efficient SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY underneath, there are no concessions to performance or fuel economy.

The all-new Mazda6 – now in its third generation – is also the first mass-production model equipped with i-ELOOP, Mazda’;s unique regenerative braking system. It’;s the most recent ingredient to Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, the company’;s building block strategy for uncompromisingly efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles. i-ELOOP joins the innovative i-stop system and SKYACTIV powertrains, chassis and body introduced on the Mazda CX-5 to set new levels  for fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

“Drivers will experience a remarkably linear response from the choice of 3 SKYACTIV engines, one diesel and 2 petrol power plants transferring power to the wheels via 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The SKYACTIV-CHASSIS’;s clever steering and suspension ensure superior handling in a car that responds to driver input with precision. The SKYACTIV-BODY, meanwhile, offers class-leading safety thanks to highly rigid impact-absorbing structures and innovative load paths to disperse impact energy away from the cabin. And to help the driver prevent accidents from happening in the first place, the new Mazda6 features an impressive array of advanced active safety technologies. Even when a collision is unavoidable, they work to diminish its severity for occupants and pedestrians – and even the vehicle itself, says David Hughes Managing Director Mazda South Africa.

The new Mazda6′s interior, where form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit built to make driving as enjoyably effortless as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be. Even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards relative to the previous model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’;s field of view. Passengers find a relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features sporty comfort and segment-leading dimensions accompanied by the latest infotainment technology.

Mazda’;s designers and engineers have truly come up with a striking piece of machinery whose looks immediately divulge what’;s underneath. A symbiotic blend of sporty, linear performance and smooth refinement that’;s destined to exceed customers’; expectations in the CD-segment

Model line-up

The Mazda6 range is as follows:

  • 2.0L Active Manual

  • 2.0L Active Automatic

  • 2.5L  Dynamic Automatic

  • 2.5L Individual Automatic

  • 2.2L DE Dynamic Automatic

  • 2.2L DE Atenza Automatic

MazdaCare

The Mazda6 is designed and built to the highest standard of performance and reliability. This standard is backed up by a 3-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty. To provide complete peace of mind motoring, a 3-year roadside assistance, a 3-year service plan and a 5-year Corrosion Warranty are also included.

S-Max Headroom: Ford Launches All-New S-Max MPV, We Want It Was Coming Here

19928 2015 Ford S Max PLACEMENT 626x382

America’s affection for minivans might be on the wane, but in Europe the tall-roof household mover (or MPV) segment is as powerful as ever. At the Paris auto show, Ford launched the second generation of its S-Max MPV, which is provided in 2 distinct body types with space for 5 or 6 passengers. Visually, the new S-Max is an evolution of the outgoing model, but this vehicle is totally new: It stands on a different platform and does not share a single body panel with the first S-Max.

What’s more, it now sports the grille that reminds us of a specific British sports-vehicle maker that when belonged to Ford’s “Premier Automotive Group.” The lighting design and style is particularly impressive, with dynamic LED headlights and beautifully executed taillights.

The preceding S-Max ranked amongst the more refined men and women movers, and the second generation raises the bar from there. Ford says handling and comfort both have improved, a claim we’ll verify from behind the wheel subsequent year. The S-Max will use electric power steering whose ratio varies according to road speed at times that technology makes for greater steering, despite the fact that it often only improves fuel efficiency.

Ford says the new variety will include many effective gasoline and diesel engines. Diesels contain a 1.5-liter generating 104 horsepower and a 2.-liter with 118, 148, or 177. Gasoline-burning 1.5- and 2.-liter engines will create 158 and 237 horsepower. For the first time, the S-Max will provide all-wheel drive.

Accessible bells and whistles consist of a heated steering wheel and heated and cooled front seats with a massage function. And the assistance systems contain speed-limit recognition. The new S-Max will hit European markets subsequent year. As to a U.S.-market launch—don’t hold your breath. But perhaps the “One Ford” technique will at some point sweep this car onto our shores.

Taking the All-New Ford Mustang from Sketch to Production

71ffd Mustang

  • The design of the 2015 Mustang is all-new yet unmistakably Mustang

  • Design process for all-new Mustang started in 2009

  • Once a design was selected, exterior and interior designers worked to perfect the lines throughout the all-new Mustang, resulting in the car first revealed in December 2013

PRETORIA, South Africa, 23 September 2014 - For a car designer, the chance to reimagine an icon like Ford Mustang is always exciting. Doing this for the famous Ford performance car’;s 50th anniversary, is the opportunity of a lifetime.

By mid-2009, with the substantially updated fifth-generation Ford Mustang in production, Ford designers, engineers and marketers turned their collective attention to what would come next: the design that would mark more than 5 decades of continuous Mustang development and production.

“To the people inside Ford, Mustang is considered the heart and soul of the company,” said Moray Callum, Ford Vice President of global design. “We spent a lot of time amongst the team and with customers discussing the history of Mustang and what it meant to people and concluded that we needed to move forward with a modern design that retained the essence of the brand.”

What makes a Mustang?

As Ford’;s performance leader, the basic parameters of Mustang were obvious: rear-wheel drive combined with the sound and performance of a V8 engine to create the visceral experience that Mustang drivers expect.

Part of the appeal of Mustang over the years has been the way it combines style, performance and everyday usability thanks to its 4-seat cabin and sizable trunk. These attributes had to be part of the new design. With these basic parameters, Ford designers established a footprint to work with roughly the same as the fifth generation model.

From a design standpoint, the challenge was how to design a car that was contemporary, but unmistakably Mustang. The goal was to create a Mustang with a bold, aggressive face, with chiselled detailing on the body and a more athletic stance on its tires.

The process kicks off

A typical new car program kicks off with a design brief that lays out the needs and wants for the upcoming vehicle. However, with 50 years of continuous development and production, every designer knew what to sketch and how a Mustang needs to look.

Several hundred sketches were submitted in early 2010 incorporating many of the primary Mustang DNA cues to varying degrees. The long bonnet, short deck, bold grille, shark-front nose, fastback profile, side hockey stick contour and rear tri-bar tail lamps were reinterpreted in dozens of different ways.

Similarly, sketches of the interior featured the distinctive symmetrical instrument panel with a double brow design and large analogue gauges.

“There are a few key elements that make Mustang a Mustang. As designers, we need to edit those cues deciding which ones to retain, how to interpret them in a modern way and how to combine them to create a car that is immediately identifiable as Mustang,” added Callum. “Looking at all of the different Mustangs over the past 5 decades, those cues have appeared in some years and not in others, but the end result was still a Mustang.”

Perhaps the most prominent of those cues that did not make the final cut was the scoop, or “hockey stick” profile, on the flanks of the car. Many of the early proposals included some form of this visual feature, but ultimately it was not included in the final production model.

Throughout 2011, hundreds of initial sketches were narrowed down to a handful of proposals that would be transformed into an initial batch of clay models for evaluation in 3 dimensions. After further development, 3 themes went into the final selection phase in early 2012.

The 2015 Mustang theme is selected

By the summer of 2012 – as with all previous generations – the main Dearborn, Michigan, studio took the lead on developing the Mustang into a production car.

Designers, clay sculptors and digital modellers spent countless hours refining the lines and surfaces that create the 3 dimensional body side and the powerful hunches as well as the long-sculpted hood with a forward leaning nose that give the 2015 Mustang its unique look and personality.

Details such as the shape and size of the grille and headlamps were refined and the rear track was widened by 70 millimetres, giving the new car an even more aggressive stance.

The elimination of the front and rear bumper shelves and the use of unified side glass with the B-pillar hidden behind the rear quarter windows contribute to the new Mustang’;s more contemporary shape.

On the interior, the team paid close attention to the relationships of the various elements, and designed them in a way to achieve optimum fit and finish. The final theme was inspired by the wing of an airplane, with the double brow carved out of the wing. All the gauges, registers, toggle switches and other design elements are placed into the wing. Everything is where it needs to be for usability, just like the cockpit of an airplane. The toggle switches are a highlight of the modern centre stack.

The designers have also taken advantage of modern lighting technology at both ends of the car. Indirect LEDs illuminate the blade style tri-bar tail lamps with a uniform glow. LEDs are also used for the 3 gills mounted inboard of the high-intensity discharge headlamps, recalling the gills moulded into the headlamp buckets of the original 1965 Mustang.

Along the way, the shape of the new Mustang underwent twice as much aerodynamic testing as any previous generation.

The convertible

The convertible is clearly part of the same product family as the fastback and yet much of the bodywork is actually unique to the open-top car. Subtle but important differences in the shape of the rear bodywork give the convertible a cohesive shape of its own.

From the raised and straightened muscle line on the rear haunches to the re-contoured boot lid, the new Mustang convertible has a more linear quality whether the top is up or down, giving the car its own distinct presence on the road.

The final production design of the all-new sixth-generation Ford Mustang was revealed to the world on December 5, 2013 and it will be go on sale in the US later this year. This is also the first generation of the Mustang that will be sold across the world, including South Africa, Australia, and the UK. The all-new Mustang, with V8 and EcoBoost® engines will go on sale in South Africa late 2015.

MG Reveals the all-new super- mini

59ef1 MG 3

There is a very, very good reason for the rather long wait for the arrival of the all-new MG3 super-mini that took the world by storm.

Now that the exciting hot hatch is here, MG South Africa can reveal that the car has undergone – and passed – a rigorous on-road durability validation test of nothing less than 3 million kilometres.

The compact yet spacious MG3 with its eye catching stance and attractive design details draws attention from every angle. The hot new hatch begs to be driven, promising huge amounts of fun and excitement all the way.

MG is locally distributed by Mandarin Motors as part of the massive Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) group of companies. “Now the wait is over – but it was worth it,” says MG South Africa General Manager for CMH Brands, Derrick Bishop.

Offering outstanding levels of design, quality and value for money, the long awaited MG3 is sure to follow in the tracks of its British and European brethren that took the marque back to the top of the sales charts in the highly competitive supermini segment of the market.

Prices might surprise many with the news that even the top model in the 3-car line-up costs less than R180 000, making it a very worthy candidate for young drivers who like to make their presence known.

However, this superb value for money package on the brand new MG3 is not offered at the expense of specification, practicality or safety. All models benefit from a powerful 1.5? engine driving the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission, offering well balanced performance, acceleration and economy.

The new MG3 – designed by MG in Britain; built by SAIC in Eastern Europe – boasts the modern MG signature front and rear styling, including LED daytime running lights as standard across the full range.

For South Africa, the MG3 range consists of the MG3 (standard), the MG3 Wired, and the top-of-the-range MG3 Style.

The full range of 3 models boasts all the creature comforts expected in a top class vehicle in this segment, including electrical everything, outstanding safety and performance, as well as one of the largest and most spacious cabins in its class.

The new MG3 stands out thanks to its sporty exterior style, with full width black mesh grille incorporated into the colour-coded front sport design bumper, black A and B-pillars, ‘wraparound’; windscreen and sleek lines. Safety is taken care of with 6 airbags, electronic stability control, corner brake control and traction control, offering the full suite of the latest technology safety equipment standard on each of the 3 new MG3 models.

A key attraction for many people will be all the fun that can be had creating their own unique MG3. An extended range of colours, exterior graphics including the best MAG alloy wheels specifically designed to compliment your MG3, interior colour packs and part-leather upholstery have been created by the UK design team and inspired by the British fashion industry.

The production version of the MG3 carries forward many of the styling cues first seen in the eye-catching MG ZERO concept car designed to target young and style conscious buyers wanting something different.

The fun factor comes into play even before owners get into the car, by designing their own highly personalised MG3. With thousands of combinations available, the chances of seeing 2 identical MG3s together are pretty slim.

The new MG3 is a small car with a big cabin. Normally this is where the compromise comes on small sporty cars, but not with the MG3.

Fun, entertaining and easy to live with, the MG3 combines style and enjoyment with practical spaciousness. The designers and engineers have combined to create an exceptional amount of space and versatility in a very compact 5-door package.

Extensive work from the MG Design and Engineering team on the architectural package has resulted in interior packaging that rivals or surpasses anything in its class. In a 4m long package, the MG3 will easily accommodate 4 tall individuals; a level of accommodation typically associated with larger cars. It mirrors the spaciousness of the MG6 range.

The MG3′s ‘rolled and raised’; front dashboard design creates an airy forward cabin space and increased legroom, while allowing excellent access to primary and secondary controls. This theme is continued in the rear of the car, where the front seats are sculpted to allow rear passengers excellent space to travel in comfort.

Class-leading rear headroom is another characteristic which sets the MG3 apart. Many cars in this sector compromise on interior space, particularly in the rear. But rear headroom in the MG3 is more than generous.

Designed with the core value of fun to drive, the MG3 chassis has been honed from hundreds of thousands of kilometres of testing on European roads. Intended to deliver impressive levels of body control, sharpness and a willingness to corner to engage keen drivers, MG’;s world class team of chassis engineers have also delivered sure footed handling and impressive ride comfort. Together this makes the MG3 suitable for every journey, from crowded Gauteng routes to flowing country roads in Mpumalanga or the Cape or cruising on the highway across the extremes of the South African landscape.

The MG3 is unmistakable on the road and takes the iconic MG brand another step into the future.

“MG became world famous for building distinctive, British, small, fun cars at a remarkably affordable price that owners can personalise to their own individual style. The MG3 is the new small, modern MG that allows a new generation of people to have fun with their MG,” concludes Bishop.

About MG Motor

Since the first MG went on sale 90 years ago in 1924, the iconic British brand has become world famous for making stylish cars that are fun to drive and own, at remarkably affordable prices. The latest offering, the MG3, is no exception; the new, small modern MG brings style and fun to a new generation, giving a fresh twist on the innovation, sporty performance and statement style that first made the MG badge famous.

Modern MGs are designed and engineered at MG’;s historic home in Longbridge, Birmingham.  Today, MG is owned by the SAIC Motor Corporation. SAIC Motor is currently rated 103rd in the Fortune 500 and, in 2013, achieved record global sales of over 5.1 million units – an increase of 13.71% on 2012 sales. SAIC Motor is the first Chinese automotive manufacturer to exceed 5 million units in a year, and 230 000 units of this extraordinary figure can be attributed to sales of the MG (and SAIC’;s domestic Roewe brand) worldwide.
