Apple Designers Reveal Automobile-Guy Cred

974bb Jonathan Ive 626x382

Apple may possibly quickly add a vehicle to its item lineup, if recent reports are precise. Given that, we’re glad to learn that the leader of Apple’s design group reveals himself to be something of a vehicle enthusiast. The New Yorker just published an in-depth profile of Jonathan Ive, the company’s head of style, who has orchestrated Apple’s style revolution driven by the iMac, iPod, and iPhone.

The insightful portrait details Ive’s work philosophy and his “blingy” personal style. But what we found especially intriguing is his appreciation for fine automobiles. He owns an Aston Martin DB4, and a excellent portion of the interview is performed from the back seat of his black Bentley Mulsanne. It was only last year that Ive turned over the keys of his every day driver to a chauffeur.

“I’ve constantly loved the big old-college square Bentleys,” Ive told The New Yorker. “The motives are entirely style-based.” Riding in the auto with Ive, the author noted a parallel amongst the Bentley and the iPhone: “The [Bentley"s] hood barely sloped, and it met the car’s front finish at a tightly curved corner that mirrored the iPhone 6 in Ive’s left hand.”

The report gives further evidence that Apple has possible to imagine an elegant car: Ive turns up his nose at the Toyota Echo and Camry, which he considers mundane contemporary vehicle style. He also carves time out to make an annual trip to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

He attends the festival with Marc Newson, his friend and now senior VP of style at Apple. Newson has a rich industrial portfolio of his personal. One particular of Newson’s designs is the Ford 021C (noticed under), shown at the 1999 Tokyo motor show. Even though some media outlets speculate that Newson’s chipper orange idea will be a blueprint for the Apple auto, we consider that’s unlikely.

Newson, even though, is a significant car-head who made a film about his 2011 participation in the Mille Miglia. Newson spoke to The Rake [PDF] about it. “Last time, I drove a Cisitalia 202MM, which is a actually uncommon, funny old auto,” he said. He’s also done the occasion in a 1952 Ferrari 225S, which he described as “a significantly better vehicle to do that race in due to the fact it’s got a significantly larger engine.”

It is very good to see an appreciation for automobiles amongst the design and style leaders at Apple. While existing speculation is that the company’s automotive entry will be a minivan-like autonomous auto, it is our hope that Ive, Newson, and the other Apple designers with an automotive bent—such as Julian Hönig, who has worked on Lamborghinis—can produce a auto that is each bit as cool-looking as the company’s other merchandise.

Stealth Reveal: 2016 Kia Rio Sedan and Hatchback Slink into Chicago

Mild tech and styling tweaks highlight the updated Rio.

Whilst the Kia Trail’ster concept was busy hogging all the consideration at the automaker’s Chicago auto show press conference, the updated 2016 Kia Rio sedan and hatchback have been waiting in the wings for a spotlight moment that in no way came. They had been mentioned only as an aside throughout the closing remarks, leaving us to ask: “Wait, what? The Rio was refreshed for 2016? And it is here?” Properly, it was, and we’ve got the particulars on all the modifications.

The refresh is led by revised front and rear fascias, the Rio adopting the corporate geometric grille mesh pattern seen on the Optima and the Soul. The headlamps get moved slightly inward imparting a more modern vibe, and new fog-light surrounds with satin bezels encircle projector lenses. The reduce valance also gets some horizontal style lines. The therapy continues at the rear, where the newly developed taillamps have been moved to the far corners of the automobile, and—in some cases—new reduce horizontal lines echo these discovered on the front. 2 new color choices, Urban Blue and Digital Yellow, also make the scene for 2016. Inside, some trim bits have been slightly altered, and Kia has improved the use of high-density foam in the A- and B-pillars to decrease NVH levels.

Acceleration, never the Rio’s forte, gets no help in the refresh. Energy for each the sedan and the hatchback comes from the exact same naturally aspirated 138-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder as before. In the sedan, its 123 lb-ft of twist are funneled to the front wheels through either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Sadly, the manual is no longer obtainable in the hatchback.

The Rio’s 3 trim levels—LX, EX, and SX—are largely unchanged. The parsimonious LX comes with crank windows and manual door locks, despite the fact that it does supply some niceties, like air conditioning, a 6-way manual driver’s seat, satellite radio, USB and auxiliary audio jacks, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The LX Power package adds keyless entry plus power windows and door locks. LX sedan buyers who spring for the automatic transmission get Bluetooth and Kia’;s efficiency-minded Active Eco Program in the bargain.

The mid-level EX comes regular with energy windows, cruise manage, remote keyless entry, and a tilt/telescope steering column. For 2016, the available Eco package is upgraded to incorporate a backup camera and Kia’s updated UVO eServices Telematics system. A new Designer package dresses up the interior with natty black cloth and gray leatherette upholstery with gray stitching, padded gray door-panel inserts, as well as gray stitching on the steering wheel, center-console armrest, and shifter boot.

The prime-dog SX trim—if such a bold claim can be created for such a humble transportation device—is focused on sportiness. To wit, we locate 17-inch aluminum wheels a sport-tuned suspension 11-inch, front brake rotors shift paddles and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The SX also adds a backup camera, navigation, push-button commence, leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, and a sunroof.

At Chicago, the 2016 Rio waited in vain for its moment in the spotlight, but purchasers will not have to wait long to get their hands on one. The Rio arrives in dealerships in the subsequent month or so—which is a lot far more than the Trail’ster can say.

Toyota, Lexus and Hino dealers reveal satisfaction

Toyota received a gold award and placed second overall at the National Automobile Dealers’; Association (NADA) Dealer Satisfaction Index Awards at a prestigious ceremony held on 14 August 2014. Both Lexus and Hino South Africa received silver awards with Hino placing second overall in the Commercial category.

“At Toyota, we work very hard to build and maintain a good relationship with our dealers. We listen, assess and act where appropriate and the results of the Dealer Satisfaction Index reflect this. Our focus on the dealer reaches a little further than sales assistance. We believe that if our dealers are well supported in terms of systems and processes as well as training, they will in turn be brand ambassadors to our business and their business will grow,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

Toyota has seen a significant improvement from fifth place in 2013 to achieving one of only 3 gold awards. Toyota also improved by 3.6% since 2013. This is indicative of the concerted effort made by the organisation to ensure that the dealers are satisfied with the service and ultimately creating customer smiles.

NADA in South Africa measures dealers’; satisfaction with automotive brands. NADA has conducted this survey for a number of years. In 2014, 39 independently researched brands formed part of the survey which received the highest responses to date.

“This is the first time since 2008 that 3 brands have achieved gold status (Mercedes Benz, Toyota and Volkswagen) and it is also the highest score Toyota has achieved since the inception of this survey,” adds Hamman.

Toyota leads 4 categories including Dealer Satisfaction, Communication and Relationship, Customer Focus and Used Cars.

The survey to the dealers is segmented into thirteen focus areas including Dealer Satisfaction; Vehicle Range; Dealer Support and Media Support amongst others. The top performing focus area was Goodwill, Policy Claims & Warranty followed by Franchise Compliance Audits.

“Toyota South Africa Motors will continue to build great relationships with the dealers and support them in their businesses. This will in turn create great customer relations. We will not be complacent, we will strive to achieve better results next year and aim for first place,” concludes Hamman.
