Way just before the LFA supercoupe came along, Lexus sold a various sort of coupe, the SC. Sure, by the end of its life, it had morphed into a folding-hardtop convertible that was, well, Not Great, but in the mid-1990s, it was a stylish, upscale, and sporty piece. What greater name is there, then, to resurrect for the widely expected production version of the wild LF-LC concept auto? None much better, and according to the Japanese magazine Vacation Auto, Lexus agrees.
Now, this is far from an official confirmation, but it tends to make a ton of sense. Lexus, having only come kicking, screaming, and Mercedes-Benz–mimicking into this planet only in the late 1980s, doesn’t have a large quantity of history to draw on. Tapping the SC name traces a lineage to previous Lexus variety-topping 2-doors.
Much better nonetheless, although the first-gen SC came with either a 3.-liter inline-6 or a 4.-liter V-8, and the second-gen SC430 came only with a 4.3-liter V-8, we anticipate the next version to arrive packing a 500-hp-plus 5.-liter V-7 An accessible hybrid powertrain with an electrically assisted V-6 appears likely, too, as does a rip-snorting F model. The ideal existing estimates place the car’s arrival in 2016 as a 2017 model.
