2016 Chevrolet Malibu: No Yawning—With New Engines, a New Platform, and a New Look, It is Very Exciting!

When Chevrolet last redesigned the Malibu, for 2013, the result seemed steeped in indifference—especially compared with the increasingly inventive competition such as the stylish Hyundai Sonata and the Ford Fusion. The Chevy was bland, and worse still, its back seat was much more cramped than the preceding model’s. Chevrolet quickly whipped up a slightly improved Malibu the very next year, but it couldn’t repair the itty-bitty back seat—or the car’s fundamental meh-ness. Now, just 3 brief years later, the Malibu is all-new once again, and this time, it sports a fresh look, fresh underpinnings, and fresh engines.

This is 1 Hot AARP Cardholder

It could be argued that the Malibu’s longevity—this is the ninth generation given that the nameplate initial appeared in 1964—has every little thing to do with its inoffensive nature. That is great for middle America and rental fleets, but today’s mid-size sedan celebration calls for a distinct sort of costume. Right on cue, the Malibu has inherited a body so stylish, so crisp, that not only will the preceding model’s visual Novocain be dissipated, but the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, and even the newly sassy Toyota Camry ought to in fact be concerned.

The designers appear to have gotten the memo that the most recent Impala is great-searching, as there is a lot of that car’s styling baked into the 2016 Malibu. Beginning with its proportions, the Malibu adopts a “4-door coupe”-ish swept roofline à la Ford Fusion and mixes it nicely with a lengthy hood and clipped overhangs. The Malibu’s face is sleek, even though from some angles, the extreme horizontality of the headlights’ top edge lends the mug a droopy look. Overall, though, the crisp lines, body-side creases, and neat stance virtually left us forgetting the old Malibu’s Play-Doh-squeezed-by way of-sadness appear.

It’s no accident that the Malibu looks longer and decrease than the old car—Chevrolet stretched the wheelbase by 3.6 inches, resulting in a nominal 2.3-inch bump in overall length. Width remains the identical as just before at 73. inches, but the hood and cowl are reduce, giving the impression of added girth. The size improve genuinely pays off inside, exactly where there’s 1.3 additional inches of rear-seat legroom back-seat passengers no longer want to fold themselves to enter and exit. While the sexy roofline cuts into rear-seat headroom somewhat—the headliner is scooped out to make space for occupants’ noggins on models with the sunroof—legroom is wholly acceptable. Refreshingly, Chevy toned down the Malibu’s interior just enough to banish the old version’s cornucopia of supplies and textures, but not so significantly as to leave the cabin dull and barren. It is a nice place to occupy, no more, no significantly less.

Underneath the Malibu sits GM’s all-new E2XX front-drive architecture (the outgoing Malibu used the shorter-wheelbase version of the aging Epsilon II platform), a modify that outcomes not only in greater looks and interior area, but less weight, also. Chevy claims that the 2016 Malibu is a lot more than 300 pounds lighter than ahead of, with a third of that weight savings obtaining come out of the car’s structure. If that weight reduction holds accurate when we confirm it with our own scales, that would place the new Malibu in the 3200–3300-pound range, which is on the light side of the mid-size class.

Double the Turbo, Double the Entertaining

If the Malibu’s 300-pound weight reduction sounds great in a vacuum, it’ll sound even far better when paired with either of the sedan’s 2 available gasoline engines. (The hybrid model returns, too—get the complete information here.) Final year’s base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is supplanted by a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4 from GM’s new Ecotec little-engine family members. Mated exclusively to a 6-speed automatic, the engine comes with auto cease-commence, direct fuel injection, and a turbo operating a maximum 17 psi of boost. Output stands at 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is down 36 horses and 2 lb-ft relative to the prior car’s 2.5-liter 4—but actual-planet overall performance shouldn’t suffer also much thanks to the Malibu’s diet regime. Fuel economy, predictably, is up—GM estimates 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, increases of 2 and 1 mpg.

The Malibu’s optional engine is largely carryover: It’s the same 2.-liter turbocharged 4 presented on last year’s automobile, but it has been re-tuned slightly. Just as the 1.5-liter Ecotec is significantly less endowed than the engine it replaces, the 2.-liter sees some of its may well clipped for 2016. The turbo makes 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft—decent figures that also take place to be 9 horsepower and 37 lb-ft weaker than the outgoing Malibu’s 2.-liter turbo. Once again, the new car’s weight savings ought to help it keep parity, as ought to the 2.-liter’s only transmission, a new 8-speed automatic. It is derived from GM’s 8L90 (observed previously in the Corvette, the Silverado/Sierra, and the big SUVs), albeit turned sideways and adapted for transverse, front-drive applications. We’re told the transmission in this form does not have provisions for hooking up to a transfer case, which means the Malibu will be strictly front-drive. The Malibu’s lead engineer assures us that this was no accident: No all-wheel drive signifies the design group didn’t need to have to beef up the car’s rear end for aft drive components, saving far more w7

Chevrolet individuals insist that driving enjoyment was a objective for the latest Malibu, something we’re taking with a grain of salt provided the old model’s utter lack of passion in such matters. Efforts to imbue the ’Bu with some spice consist of a dual-motor electric-power-steering setup, which is mentioned to supply higher precision, as effectively as swapping some of the suspension’s steel pieces for aluminum ones. Oh, and of course there’s the weight loss decreasing weight generally enhances a vehicle’s dynamics.

In no way Worry, Security-Bu is Right here

Of greater importance to mid-size sedan buyers than horsepower figures and suspension tuning is the 2016 Malibu’s roster of safety characteristics. Pedestrian detection with automatic braking, lane-keeping help, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parking, automatic higher beams, and adaptive cruise manage are all accessible. Ten airbags are common, too, and Chevy is providing a new PIN-protected Teen Driver feature that enables parents to monitor their kids’ driving and set speed-limit warnings, minimize the maximum sound-technique volume level, and much more, if you’re into that sort of point.

The system’s a variety of functions are accessible through a new optional 8-inch MyLink infotainment touch screen. With the larger screen—a 6-incher is available on lower trims—you get navigation, as effectively as a slightly updated version of MyLink with a faster processor. We sampled this program briefly in a preproduction Malibu, and the new menu structure seems intuitive (it’s the exact same in the 6-inch setup but with no the quicker brain), while inputs are dispatched rapidly and without fuss. To our utter disbelief, we have been informed that the new MyLink’s fundamental underpinnings have been pilfered from Cadillac’s maligned CUE infotainment program, proving that you really can polish a . . . you get it.

Pricing for the Malibu has however to be released, but purchasers will be provided 4 trim levels: L, LS, LT, and a new “Premier” spec that replaces the now-defunct LTZ. Every Malibu will come with GM’s 4G LTE information connection with a wireless hotspot and 3 months of cost-free data. The LS comes common with a backup camera, active grille shutters, and the smaller sized of the 2 MyLink touch screens the LT adds LED operating lights and the Premier gets LED taillights, 2 rear-seat USB ports and a 110-volt power outlet, a wireless telephone charger (integrated nicely in the kind of a center-console charging “slot” that you merely drop your telephone into), leather seats, ventilated seats, and the 8-inch MyLink setup.

When it goes on sale in the 4th quarter of this year, the 2016 Malibu must set Chevrolet back on course in the mid-size race. Final judgment, however, will want to wait until we drive the new sedan. Only then will we know how much the competitors ought to have to worry from Chevy.

According to a report in Automotive News, Chrysler is preparing to adopt direct injection and turbocharging in an effort to improve fuel economy and enhance the output of its Pentastar V-6 family of engines. Referred to as the Pentastar Upgrade—or PUG for short—the revised engines are element of the maker’s strategy for meeting tightening CAFE requirements.

According to the AN‘s source, the initial engine to benefit from the program will be Chrysler’s ubiquitous 3.6-liter V-6, the updated version of which is slated to debut in late 2015 as element of a mild refresh of the Grand Cherokee. Subsequent up will be a reworked 3.2-liter V-6, which is scheduled to arrive in the redesigned Chrysler Town & Country minivan sometime in 2016. Mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and taking benefit of the new minivan’s (alleged) improved aerodynamics and weight reduction, fuel economy for the T&C is expected to improve by at least 25 percent more than the present model’s EPA ratings of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

The V-6 Jeep Grand Cherokee (2014 model shown) could soon pack direct injection.

It is not the least bit surprising that Chrysler would contemplate adopting technology that is grow to be basically commonplace across the industry, and the positive aspects of undertaking so will reach across the corporate umbrella. At present, the 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar is accessible in the Jeep Wrangler, Ram 1500 pickup, Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, and Dodge Charger, amongst other individuals. If the reworked engines can aid Chrysler achieve fuel-economy gains equivalent to the projected figure quoted for the Town & Country, they would go a lengthy way in keeping the automaker’s CAFE numbers on an upward trend. Plus the thought of a twin-turbocharged, 400-plus-hp V-6 Dodge Charger tends to make us a tiny giddy, even if it might cause havoc among the Dodge brand’s Hemi-dominated horsepower hierarchy.

The supply also indicated that Fiat’s MultiAir variable valve timing technologies will continue to be utilised elsewhere, but “other naturally aspirated engines in the Fiat-Chrysler lineup are also getting regarded as for turbocharging.” This news dovetails nicely with the anticipated arrival of the 2017 Dodge Dart SRT, which likely will pack all-wheel drive and a turbocharged version of the Tigershark 4-cylinder.

Johan de Nysschen: Cadillac to Use New Modular Engines, Possibly Expand Lineup with Additional Halo Models (Yes, Sports Vehicles)

c367c 2015 Cadillac ATS coupe 2 0T placement 626x382

Common Motors will create a new set of engines especially for Cadillac by the decade’s end and sell a halo automobile above the forthcoming CT6 sedan, so lengthy as prime executives hold giving Caddy chief Johan de Nysschen almost everything he desires.

In an interview with Automobile, de Nysschen stated future Cadillacs would use a new modular engine design and style for 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder configurations and that he would “work extremely challenging to keep the architecture unique for Cadillac.” The luxury brand hasn’t had an exclusive engine considering that the vaunted Northstar V-8 ended production in 2011 soon after practically 20 years on the industry.

The move to an exclusive ostensibly world-class powertrain lineup would solve one particular of our major gripes with otherwise fabulous current Cadillacs, namely that most of these vehicles’ engines—being shared with lesser GM products—aren’t appropriate for a brand with premium international aspirations. In testing, we’ve located the 2.-liter turbo 4 to be too coarse and unrefined and the 3.6-liter V-6 weak and inefficient compared to the related engines from the competition. The a single shining star is the twin-turbo V-6, which powers our delightful 2014 CTS Vsport long-termer.

De Nysschen mentioned that even though “smaller capacity engines” would come 1st, specifically for sale in China, the V-8s would “come toward the latter portion of this decade, which will give you a hint also for where we are taking the discussion on the expansion of our future solution line.” Sharing Cadillac engines or technologies with other GM brands, a complete 180 from present GM practice, could be in the pipeline, as well.

“There will be some models that will be definitely standalone, pure, thoroughbred Cadillac,” he mentioned. “And then there are some where we must make certain these automobiles capture the Cadillac values but where it might be OK to share componentry. I do not want to use a brand name. But if another brand in the stable decides they want to use a Cadillac asset and they are prepared to accept the larger expense that’s linked with the asset, that helps us amortize the price.” This could imply engines, yes, but also perhaps Omega-platform-primarily based vehicles from, say, Buick.

Spy photo of the forthcoming CT6 flagship the baggy tarps will be an further-cost selection.

As for model expansion, we’ve already touched on the 2 crossover SUVs Cadillac is organizing to add—a mid-size 3-row crossover to slot between the Escalade and SRX and a compact model beneath the SRX—but de Nysschen mentioned he believes there is at least area for 2 more cars above the CT6 in the brand’s portfolio, as properly as sports automobiles. His previously stated strategy of keeping a premium price tag structure dovetails nicely with the wish to generate “aspirational cars” such as these.

“We have room for a vehicle above [the CT6], and then these would be really prestigious, really higher-efficiency but luxury cars. I believe 1 also needs some spice in the meal. I’m a performance enthusiast myself. We need to also appear at one particular or 2 sports vehicles that you buy for emotional factors, not for practicality, but simply because they are so attractive and so entertaining to drive,” he stated.

Whilst Cadillac just announced alterations to its future model nomenclatures and is moving its headquarters as component of a quest to polish the brand’s as soon as-lustrous reputation, de Nysschen mentioned he didn’t want to copy almost everything from Europe, specifically with Cadillac’s edgy “Art and Science” style language.

De Nysschen is at present discussing evolving the styling with the design and style group to “present modern, modern, progressive American luxury.” He’s also on record as saying that Cadillac’s revival could take an additional 10 years to complete and that he’s only 10 or 15 years away from retirement and wants to finish on a higher note.

Kick in a Box: Rating the Energy-to-Dollar Efficiency of Much more than 40 Crate Engines [Infographic]

A “crate engine” is just that: an engine that comes in a wooden box, delivered to your door, ready to be dropped into the automobile of your picking. The great old days’ answer of constructing your personal engine is falling out of favor, increasingly replaced by the ease and expense-effectiveness of purchasing a complete, ready-to-run powerplant. The appeal is obvious: verified energy levels, dependability, and typically a warranty. There are hundreds of choices in the crate-engine marketplace, and even the automakers are in on the game. Ford, GM, and Mopar have stock and modified production engines available for sale, as effectively as new overall performance versions of prior designs, like the tiny-block Chevrolet that dates back to 1955. Here, we’ve compiled a choice of OE offerings, sorted by their most crucial stats: power and cost. Click the graphic to enlarge.

Soon after Marketplace, Beyond Explanation

OE engines as well tame? Aftermarket catalogs are bursting with mills combining unreal output with equally shocking civility. Lingenfelter’s baddest is a 1000-hp supercharged 427 cubic-incher for $ 34,995. It is a drop-in package for any vehicle that originally came with an LS engine. If packaging is not a concern, then Moran Motorsports has a 2000-hp, 555-cube big-block-Chevy–based crate for you. It’s not low-cost: Getting a single on the road will price about $ 38,000. But if you had a a lot more reputable way to run in the sixes at much more than 200 mph and then cruise all day, you could set your price, as well.

2015 BMW 2-series Convertible Debuts with Two Turbo Engines, Obtainable AWD

2 turbo engines, available AWD, and a top that drops.

With the introduction of the 2-series convertible, BMW’;s rear-wheel-drive 1-series is history in the U.S. (The Euro-market hatchback is still available.) But despite the new moniker, the 2-series very much adheres to the formula of its predecessor. Like the 1-series, it is built atop a chassis closely related to that of the 3-series and it is available in this country as both a ragtop convertible and a fixed-roof coupe.

The 2-series convertible is a bit larger than the 1-series droptop, being about 3.5 inches longer and a full inch wider. Yes, this translates into a higher curb weight, but also more room for the driver and passenger. Cargo room is increased as well, as is the size of the hole through which you load stuff. And this smallest BMW convertible is still compact, and it should prove easily maneuverable in crowded cities such as New York and San Francisco. While the 4-series convertible has adopted the attitude of a stately cruiser, this 2-series looks to have its predecessor’;s more playful personality.

BMW carried over one the best features of the 1-series: The fabric top, which makes so much more sense than a clumsy-looking, heavy, and complex folding hardtop as seen on the 4-series. A softtop takes up far less room when folded and it gives more traditional visuals when raised. BMW says the interior is quieter with the roof raised thanks to additional insulating layers, and it can fully actuate in both directions in 20 seconds and at speeds of up to 30 mph. It’s available in black, gray with metallic fibers, or brown with metallic fibers. If you’ve spec’d the proximity entry and ignition option, you can use the fob to stow or unfurl the lid, too.

The 2-series convertible comes with a choice of 2 longitudinally mounted engines familiar to anyone who’s studied the coupe’s spec sheet: A 240-hp, 255-lb-ft 2.0-liter N20 turbocharged 4, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged N55 inline-6 good for 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. Fitted with the lesser engine, the convertible gets 228i badging as well as the option of xDrive all-wheel drive; it charges to 60 mph, BMW says, in 5.7 seconds in rear-drive form or 5.6 with xDrive. An 8-speed automatic is the only available transmission in the 228i.

Should your budget allow, we’;d recommend you shoot for the uplevel M235i. With its prodigious torque—75 lb-ft more than the 228i, for those disinclined to math—the top-spec convertible is claimed to sprint to 60 in just 4.8 seconds. (BMW estimates are notoriously conservative versus our real-world test figures, so it’ll be even quicker than that.) Not only that, but the M235i can be ordered with BMW’s slick 6-speed manual transmission. There will be no all-wheel-drive version available at launch on this model, but it will be offered at a later date.

In base trim, the 228i convertible rolls on 17-inch wheels; order the Sport Line or M Sport packs to nab 18s. The former package also brings a sport-tuned suspension, interior and exterior cosmetic bits, and sport seats. The M Sport bundle includes a firmer suspension, a 0.4-inch drop in ride height, an aero body kit, a bunch of M badges inside and out, and unique interior and exterior trim. An optional Track Handling package identical to the coupe’s can be ordered, too. The M235i, like its fixed-roof sibling, already is performance-oriented, so its options list is filled with tech and safety gadgets rather than sport-focused stuff.

As in other modern BMWs, a Driving Dynamics Control switch allows the selection of various chassis modes; this includes an Eco Pro setting that can de-clutch the engine from the driveline when coasting between roughly 30 and 100 mph. The 2-series convertible is also the first BMW to offer no-cost (for 3 years) wireless self-updating of the navigation system via 4G LTE connectivity. BMW says the updates occur several times per year.

As to the additional weight we alluded to earlier in the story, the 2-series convertible is likely to carry some 2 to 3 hundred additional pounds over an identical coupe. BMW’s effort to spread carbon fiber and the lightweight technologies of its i3 and i8 to its more workaday models can’t come soon enough. But we like this car’s spec sheet and its style—the latter marks a definite improvement over the sow-bellied rear-drive 1-series.

The 2-series convertible will make its real-life debut at this November’s L.A. auto show and arrive in U.S. dealerships in early 2015. The 228i will start at $ 38,850 and the 228i xDrive at $ 40,650 (each is $ 5800 more than the coupes), while the M235i will cost $ 48,650 ($ 4600 more). When xDrive is made available on the droptop M235i, it will cost an additional $ 1800. All models will face off against the Audi A3 and S3 cabriolets, battles—and comparison tests—we look forward to.
