Protect your family with a roadworthy vehicle this holiday season

4242f Vehicle maintenance

With spring having arrived and the end of the year in sight, many families will already be thinking about annual holidays and getting planning underway. Those with a plan will also be thinking about the way they will get to their holiday destinations and about the family car that will get them there safely.

One of the most vital parts of the car is undoubtedly the tyres. It is these 4 items that literally carry the load – the weight of the car, the holiday gear and the family. It is also often the last thing consumers want to spend money on just before a big family holiday.

The minimum legal tread depth on South African tyres is one millimetre across the entire circumference of the tyre. Spots on a tyre could wear down un-evenly so the tread in some places could be over one millimetre and other places it could be less than one millimetre, depending where you measure it. It is extremely important to check if your tyres meet the legal requirements of thread depth.Unfortunately, this small safety margin is one that is often ignored by up to 40% of all South African drivers, probably because of the cost involved in replacing tyres, something that is not often budgeted for, says Standard Bank UCount Rewards programme and their partners in road safety, Tiger Wheel & Tyre.

Joe du Plooy of Tiger Wheel & Tyre, points out that the risk of travelling with worn tyres can be magnified by the costs which could be incurred if a driver is even involved in just a minor bumper bashing.

“Insurance assessors can reject a claim if tyres are worn on the basis that a vehicle is not roadworthy. A motorist could therefore find himself having to pay for the damage incurred on 2 vehicles. The potential cost of an event of this nature should be considered against the cost of buying tyres when a driver notices that the tread on the tyres are becoming worn.”

“Standard Bank acknowledges that tyres are one of the main components required for a roadworthy vehicle. It can also be a costly exercise and an added expense, often not budgeted for. It is for this reason that UCount Rewards have joined forces with Tiger Wheel & Tyre says Fayelizabeth Foster, Head of UCount Rewards at Standard Bank.

“We believe that by swiping a qualifying Standard Bank personal debit, cheque or credit card at our Participating Rewards Retailer, Tiger Wheel & Tyre, our members can collect rewards points on your purchases at Tiger Wheel & Tyre which allows for a saving and help reduce the cost of keeping their car tyres in good condition. Our members can also redeem their rewards points at Tiger Wheel & Tyres.  We believe that a safe car is a gift that benefits the entire family, especially when the family car tackles the long road to holiday destinations.”

Before embarking on your holiday, Tiger Wheel & Tyre recommends that the following checks be conducted to ensure safe motoring:

  • Tyres including the spare tyre should always be inflated to the correct tyre pressure. Over-inflated tyres erode quickly at their centre, while under-inflated tyres wear quicker on the outsides. Under-inflated tyres also overheat easily and can cause tyre bursts, leading to road fatalities.

  • Wheel balancing and alignment should take place every 10 000 kms, after you hit a pothole or obstacle or before every major trip. This not only improves the handling of your car, but also extends the tread life of your tyres.

  • Consider filling your tyres with nitrogen instead of air. With nitrogen, tyres run cooler, which means they last longer. Tyres running on nitrogen don’t lose pressure as quickly as tyres inflated with air. Inflating your tyres with nitrogen can extend tyre life by up to 20%.

  • Heavy loads put extra strain on your tyres, so if your car is jam-packed with luggage, make sure you increase the tyre pressure. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended tyre pressures for “heavy loads” before you pack your car.

Cover for your family fleet

Is there more than a single automobile parked outdoors your house?

You might not feel of your self as operating a fleet of automobiles, but it’s not unusual these days for a household to have 3 or far more cars.

You and your partner may well each have a auto, for instance.

Then there’s the runabout for your son or daughter. Plus, the classic automobile, motorcycle, horse box or even camper van for the weekends.

It can quickly get quite crowded.

59742 cars driveway

It can also be pricey (and administratively demanding!) to insure numerous automobiles on separate policies.

Which is exactly where family fleet or multi-auto insurance can support.

All in the family

Household fleet insurance coverage functions in a lot the same way as normal cover, except you take out just one policy for many automobiles.

Plus, you get a discount for insuring several cars. The savings differ from insurer to insurer, but you could be searching at about 20% off what you would otherwise invest.

The numbers game

Multi-vehicle policies normally cover in between 2 and 5 autos – and, typically, the far more autos on the policy, the bigger the discount.

Most insurers insist all the vehicles involved are registered to the identical address, but they can incorporate cars, vans, motorcycles and campervans.

Something, truly, except industrial and business cars.

Flexible pals

The cover can be pretty versatile.

For instance, you may want to cover one vehicle for travel abroad, but not another. Or you may possibly choose to opt for third party, fire and theft for a auto with tiny worth and extensive cover for the far more pricey auto.

You can also apply diverse excesses to various automobiles.

Driver information

Family members fleet insurance policies cover any named driver.

You can include all members of the household, and some policies will also insure a motorist at a distinct address, perhaps a child who is away at university.

The drivers do not have to be family members members, but there may be a minimum age, typically 21 or 25, as insurers aren’t fond of young drivers.

Just make positive you study the tiny print cautiously to locate out about the no claims bonus.

Named drivers are normally permitted to accumulate their personal no claims discount (NCD) in case they want to take out their own policy in the future.

Even so, in some instances they might have to stick with the identical insurer in order to benefit from the NCD.

Clear benefit

The positive aspects of loved ones fleet cover are clear. You only have to worry about one particular set of paperwork and one particular renewal date.

All drivers ought to also be able to earn a discount if they do not make any claims.

Spending budget buster

But multi auto insurance coverage is not with out its downsides. A single renewal date for several automobiles can punch a fairly huge hole in your household price range.

Also, a family fleet policy for, say, 3 vehicles is not necessarily less costly than 3 separate policies. It is for that reason a very good idea to examine quotes ahead of you buy.

Thought you might appreciate a nice feature for your Blog! As I have told you before, I have a long heritage with the market in which we work and have completed each aspect from loading on a forklift, to totally certified HGV mechanic to European and at instances Middle East driver. Above is a brand new Huge J that my grandfather purchased along with the trailer for the building of what locals get in touch with the D road, otherwise known as the A500 among junctions 15 and 16 on the M6. I started off working for my Grandfather who was actually a single of the 1st hauliers in the UK to send trucks to Europe. Right after his death I kept one particular truck and worked for myself mostly taking animal skins out to Italy and after a wash out, bringing completed leather goods back to the UK. I then moved on to Spanish work taking Michelin tyres from Stoke out and bringing fruit back for the markets. This was in the pre-speed limiter days and when you only changed a tacho if it was full. Sleeping was completed either on ferries or when parked up for 24 hours by the predecessors to VOSA. Soon after finishing with European haulage due to ever decreasing prices I moved on to a flatbed carrying portacabins and construction gear for the then Leonard Fairclough (swallowed up by Amec).

Sooner or later I decided adequate was adequate and decided to go and work for a person else. I did a bit of round timber haulage and discovered what graft truly was. I then moved on to a couple of months on a brick crane which was possibly the most thankless job I have ever carried out. After getting involved in UK-IE targeted traffic I landed a part with a effectively identified European trailer operator looking following the eastbound flow between the UK and Benelux. This was succeeded right after a contract takeover to promotion to contract manager of all export specifications from each the UK and IE. I have attached a copy of a function from this weeks Commercial Motor. I’m not certain if you are permitted to use it or if its covered under copyright law but you will see exactly where my heritage comes from. Gerald Broadbent was my grandfathers youngest brother and I have memories of him as a very astute man who we weren’t allowed to ‘play up’ in front of. As I got older and worked for my grandfather we utilized to quite frequently go into Boalloy and move trailers around on web site and even go and pick up prototype trailers to load for Europe to take on week extended test drives. Not positive if this was a dodgy family way of acquiring a cost-free trailer for a week as we had been short or if it was genuine but it worked.
