How Helmet Laws Affect Motorcycle Insurance Rates

by Alice Holbrook on February 12, 2015 | posted in Vehicle Insurance

For some motorcyclists, wearing a helmet defeats the purpose of riding. Like-minded bikers have effectively campaigned to make helmets optional for most or all riders in 31 states. And where riders can go without having helmets, many do. For instance, the University of Michigan’s Transportation Analysis Institute discovered that helmet use dropped by nearly a quarter amongst riders in crashes after the state eased helmet laws in 2012.

But not wearing a helmet is riskier and can be costly — for bikers and non-bikers alike.

Higher medical expenses outcome in greater premiums

When riders get on the road without having a helmet, there’s a higher likelihood they’ll suffer a serious injury. Much more extreme injuries could lead to far more expensive medical bills, which would improve the quantity insurers pay on a claim.

In 2013, the Highway Loss Data Institute identified that Michigan motorcycle insurers’ losses were 51% larger right after the helmet law adjust. On the other hand, the Centers for Disease Handle estimates that helmet use amongst U.S. bikers saved $ 3 billion in 2010.

When motorcycle insurers face higher charges, they should make up for losses somehow. A single alternative is raising customers’ prices. In that case, motorcyclists might get decrease premiums by taking a motorcycle security course or being an knowledgeable rider. But it assists to reside in a state where insurance coverage organizations have a low rate of losses.

Exposed and uninsured

Riding without helmets isn’t the only way motorcyclists contribute to greater prices for other bikers. According to the National Highway Targeted traffic Security Administration, unhelmeted riders tend to be uninsured, which comes with other charges.

For one particular, a higher number of uninsured bikers final results in greater premiums for insured bikers, just as a high level of uninsured drivers raises prices for insured drivers. Motorcyclists might want to acquire added insurance coverage as protection against uninsured bikers, but that would also raise their rates.

Bikers who get injured need to have therapy, no matter no matter whether they’re insured. If they’re uninsured, their treatment — which could cost thousands of dollars — is often funded by public health applications. This signifies greater expenses for taxpayers.

The bottom line

Risky riders price insurance businesses a lot more. And study following study has shown that riding with out a helmet is risky. This risk is reflected in helmetless riders’ own insurance prices, but some of it is also spread among other riders and residents of their city and state. Voluntary helmet laws may make biking a lot more enjoyable, but they don’t save any individual income.

How Usage-Based Rates Can Save You Cash on Automobile Insurance coverage

If you’re looking for cheap car insurance and don’t rack up lots of driving miles, you may find that new usage-based insurance plans can save you money.

These plans, available in most states, essentially let you pay by the mile for insurance, but require that you add a device to your car that lets the insurance company track your driving behavior.

How it works

The pay-as-you-drive model can be a great way for those who drive less than 10,000 miles a year to save some serious cash. Some companies say you can save 30% or more on your premium, depending on your driving habits.

Information about your driving behavior, including speed and miles driven, are recorded using a telematics device, which plugs directly into your car’s onboard diagnostics port. The information is sent to the insurance company and typically made available to you on a personalized website, where you can track your progress and see how the information is affecting the cost of your premium. The device is also a plus for parents who want to monitor teen driving for risky habits.

Some large car insurance carriers offer this pay-as-you-go insurance, including Snapshot by Progressive, Drivewise from Allstate and Esurance’s DriveSense. State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save program uses a vehicle’s OnStar or SYNC communication service to record information.

Newcomer Metromile also offers customized policies, underwritten by the National General Insurance Group, based on data collected from a mileage tracking device. With Metromile, users pay a monthly base rate, plus a few cents per-mile. Unlike some other carriers, Metromile doesn’t take your driving habits into a consideration. Metromile recently announced a deal to provide by-the-mile insurance to Uber drivers.

Usage-based insurance plans aren’t available in every state, but most states have at least one option available. Metromile is currently available only in California, Illinois, Oregon and Washington.

Concerns over privacy

Although usage-based insurance may save drivers money, the programs have been criticized on privacy grounds because carriers track their customers’ behavior. About 47% of respondents to a 2014 survey by Deloitte Center for Financial Services said they wouldn’t be interested in having their driving monitored.

But if you’re willing to give up information about your driving habits, you could potentially save a lot of money. Nearly one-third of the Deloitte survey respondents said they would need to save more than 20% on auto insurance before they would allow their driving behavior to be monitored.

Benefits of usage-based car insurance

If usage-based insurance fits your lifestyle, here are some benefits you may see:

1. Rewards for good driving

Telematics devices record your driving habits, including time of day, speed and miles driven, as well as risky behaviors like sudden, heavy braking and quick acceleration. Thus, the safer you drive, the more you save. About 60% of consumers interested in usage-based insurance said they would be willing to change their driving behavior to get discounts, according to a survey by Towers Watson, a professional services firm headquartered in New York.

2. Rewards for less driving

Those who see the most savings are those who work from home, don’t use their vehicle for work or make heavy use of alternative means of transportation, including walking, biking or public transit. If you have a long commute or take frequent high-mileage trips, usage-based insurance is a more costly option.

3. It bucks premium averages

Some factors that go into traditional premium determinations are unrelated to your actual driving or insurance record, including statistics related to your gender, age, marital status and where you live. With usage-based insurance, your rate is set according to your actual driving behavior patterns, so pricing more accurately reflects your risk.

4. You can get discounts for signing up

You’ll typically save up to 20% with usage-based insurance plans. But some providers, such as Esurance, offer additional 5% to 10% discounts just for signing up.

5. Your driving patterns won’t raise your rates

Your discount depends on your driving habits, but you can’t be penalized if the device on your car reveals risky habits. The worst thing that can happen is you won’t see any savings on your standard premium.

With Metromile, your rate will be only as high as the miles you drive, so if you rack up high mileage, you’ll have to pay for it.

If you’re not a frequent driver, and if you don’t mind your data being tracked, usage-based insurance could be the key to cheap car insurance. Plus, it’s a great way to prove to your friends and family that you’re the great driver you say you are.

Ought to fuel rates be even decrease?

As pump prices fall, the proportion we give to the government in fuel taxes is rising. Campaigners are calling for a reduce in duty – but is this realistic?

Drivers all more than the UK are celebrating as the value of fuel continues to fall.

At the time of writing, the average value of a litre of unleaded in Britain is just beneath 109p a litre, with some forecourts selling it at beneath £1.

Collapsing oil price

Diesel is 116p a litre at a common filling station but less than 110p in some components of the nation.

The collapse in the value of oil considering that last summer has clearly been a boon for motorists: a barrel of Brent crude is now trading at significantly less than $ 50 dollars, compared with $ 115 last summer time.

But should fuel costs be even lower than they are at present? Are we obtaining a fair deal from retailers and – offered that tax tends to make up the lion’s share of what we pay for fuel – the government?

It is a widespread complaint that when the cost of oil falls, petrol retailers as effectively as power suppliers are slow to pass on the savings to consumers.

Why have prices not fallen further?

On the other hand, critics say, when the value of oil is on the up, these companies are considerably quicker to enhance what they charge.

An investigation by the Workplace of Fair Trading 2 years ago located no sturdy evidence that there was something unfair about the way petrol retailers set prices.

But with the cost of oil down by nicely over half given that last summer’s peak, it is reasonable to ask why the expense of petrol and diesel has only fallen by around a fifth.

Component of the purpose is that the raw material that goes into a litre of fuel – the oil itself – only represents a portion of the general cost.

Tax is the huge situation

There is also the cost of processing, transportation and retailing to take into account: the worth of oil might have slumped but the same surely can not be mentioned of these variables.

The true situation, however, is tax. The UK government imposes duty of 57.95p on each litre of petrol and diesel, with VAT at 20% then added to both the product price tag and the duty.

Simply because this duty is fixed, the decrease the cost of petrol is the higher the proportion motorists pay in tax.

According to the RAC, this indicates that the tax on petrol final July – when unleaded was nearly 140p a litre – was just over 60%.

Greater tax take

This month, nonetheless, the proportion of fuel bills going to the treasury is almost 70%.

As you might expect, retailers now want the government to cut taxes so they can pass on more of the falls in the oil price to their customers and thereby increase sales.

But from the coalition’s point of view, it is not that basic: though the Treasury’s percentage take from each litre of fuel has risen, the government is in fact obtaining much less revenue per tank than last summer.

Tax at roughly 60% on a 140p litre of petrol operates out at 84p, compared with 70% of 110p right now – just 77p.

Lack of political stress

This doesn’t necessarily mean we are paying less in duty all round – the lower cost of fuel has boosted sales, and that could be adequate to make up the revenue shortfall.

But if the government cut duty, it would possibly need to raise tax revenues in other ways.

And with most drivers enjoying this unexpected fall in pump prices, it is challenging to see political pressure to reduce tax rising substantially in the subsequent couple of months.

But if the government reduce duty, it would possibly want to raise tax revenues in other techniques.

And with most drivers enjoying this unexpected fall in pump prices, it is difficult to see political stress to reduce tax rising drastically in the subsequent few months.

Automobile insurance rates on the rise once again

The price of petrol might be falling, but motor premiums have increased once again. New figures show a second successive quarter of price rises.

Britain’s drivers are facing higher car insurance prices for the second successive quarter, new research shows.

Figures from the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index, produced in association with Towers Watson, show that in the last 3 months of 2014 the cost of a typical annual comprehensive motor policy rose to £594 – an increase of 2% or £12.

Back-to-back rises

This is the first time since 2011 that prices have risen in 2 consecutive quarters, the study found.

Falls in prices in early 2014, however, mean that current premiums remain lower than in 2013.

Steve Sanders, finance director at Confused.com, said: “These latest price increases, for the second successive quarter, are likely to fuel speculation that the motor insurance market has turned and price rises will become a regular occurrence.”

The research showed that out of 121 postal towns in the UK, 96 experienced some sort of price increase between October and the end of the year.

Rises for young and old

The youngest drivers faced the greatest increase in costs in absolute terms: average premiums for 17-year-olds were up £73 to an eye-watering £1,983 a year, a rise of 3.8%.

But the highest percentage increase, 4.7%, hit drivers aged 61 – this group’s typical annual car insurance bill rose £15 from £327 to £342.

The City of London was the area which experienced the greatest price rises: by the end of 2014, premiums were up 3.3% to £1,012, an increase of £33 on 12 months previously.

In parts of the Midlands, rises were higher than average: in Telford, for example, premiums were up 6.5% or £33 to £549 over the quarter.

Price falls in some areas

Elsewhere, it was a different story.

Premiums have remained largely unchanged across much of Manchester and Merseyside, while in west central London the average price was down to £888 – a fall of 0.3% over the quarter, but more than 17% lower than at the end of 2013.

Drivers across Shetland and the Hebrides have benefited from large quarterly falls in the cost of cover: price falls of 8.1% and 10.1% respectively means motorists in these islands now pay £451 and £438 for annual insurance.

Sanders added: “While some consumers may still be experiencing year-on-year savings on their car insurance policies, they should prepare themselves for further price increases over the coming months.

“Any savings they do see compared to last year will be eroded by further price increases.

“With that in mind, we would urge consumers to shop around and compare prices to ensure they get the best deal possible.”

Honda Expands Airbag Recall Nationwide, Takata Tests Show Higher Defect Rates

22c33 NHTSA Hearing Hiroshi Shimizu Takata Dec 3 2014 626x405
Hiroshi Shimizu, Takata’s senior vice president of global good quality assurance, testifies ahead of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on December 3.

With Takata denying a federal request to recall more of its driver’s-side airbags, Honda has agreed to do so by expanding its regional recalls and calling all automakers to help a third-party audit that would speed up components testing and properly determine the shrapnel-shooting airbags.

As of last Wednesday, the National Highway Visitors Safety Administration had provided Takata until midnight last evening to expand the recall and had pressured half of the 10 impacted automakers to do the same. While NHTSA maintains that passenger-side airbags do not pose a coast-to-coast problem, Takata senior vice president Hiroshi Shimizu rebuffed NHTSA’s claims that a number of million driver’s-side airbags now demonstrate a national safety danger.

“Based on the information we are collecting from the region, the data nonetheless help that we must remain focused on the region with higher humidity,” Shimizu stated in a hearing today to the Residence Committee on Energy and Commerce.

To date, Takata has tested roughly 4000 inflators recovered from automobiles in “high humidity” regions of the south and Gulf Coast and said that all of the approximately 400 driver’s-side inflators had performed as designed. But of the remaining 3600 passenger-side inflators, Shimizu said that “less than 60″ had ruptured—which, at 1.67 % of the sample, is a quite higher failure price in manufacturing. NHTSA had sent a recall request to Takata final month soon after a driver of a 2007 Ford Mustang outdoors of the regional recall was injured by a 2-inch metal shard. In the U.S., 4 folks have died from the defective Takata inflators—all of them in Honda vehicles—and at least 139 injuries have been reported across all automakers.

“The proof is the dilemma isn’t limited to areas of absolute, higher humidity,” NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman stated at the hearing. Friedman mentioned he would pursue fines, which can run up to $ 7000 per day, if Takata does not comply with an expanded recall.

So far, only Toyota has seconded Honda’s request for outdoors testing but did not expand any of its recalls. Takata stated it would type an independent panel to scrutinize top quality checks, recommend greatest practices at its facilities, and publish the final results at a later date. As part of NHTSA’s investigation, the company has till December 5 to supply the agency with particulars on its manufacturing processes and to reveal employee names who worked on the production line when the faulty airbags had been manufactured. All 10 automakers have also been ordered to submit test benefits from the regional recalls by December 5, hence Honda’s cry for a group work. Honda is below a separate investigation by NHTSA for omitting 1729 death and injury reports for far more than a decade, a dilemma the business mentioned nowadays was due to poor employee oversight, and for not specifically mentioning airbag-related deaths and injuries in previous recalls.

10741 Takata shard 2007 Mustang airbag rupture 626x352 In August, a 2007 Ford Mustang driver was injured by this 2-inch metal fragment from a faulty Takata airbag.

Despite months of testing—plus years of related investigations by Takata and Honda that stretch back to 2004—neither Takata nor the automakers have a definitive answer as to why the airbags are exploding shrapnel. Shimizu said Takata is testing about 25 inflators per day and is currently on track to ship out 350,000 replacements per month and will ramp up to 450,000 by January. If each automaker issues national airbag recalls, Takata has agreed to contract with suppliers Autoliv and Daicel to feed the demand.

Although numerous of Takata’s current airbag inflators use the synthetic compound Tetrazole, Shimizu mentioned there was nothing unsafe about the ammonium nitrate utilized in the faulty inflators, only that “manufacturing processes and humidity control in the plant” had caused the problem. When Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) revealed comments from Takata engineers in 1999 who raised doubts about ammonium nitrate, which includes that it “predisposes this propellant to break apart” and that it could “blow up,” Shimizu said he did not remember seeing them. Final month, a Takata official stated the replacement airbag inflators had a revised chemical compound but have been still primarily based on ammonium nitrate. Shimizu mentioned the replacements have the exact same propellant as just before.

“I’m quite confident that merchandise on the current production line should operate as made and are secure,” Shimizu said.

With regard to allegations that business workers destroyed information after discovering faulty airbags in 2004, Shimizu denied there was “any secret test” and stated the company did conduct tests at that time related to a separate difficulty in which airbag cushions have been tearing on BMW models.

Complete Life Insurance Rates Can Be Worth the Investment Rewards

The main purpose of whole life insurance is to provide for loved ones when you die, but it can also deliver a host of investment and savings benefits.

Whole life policies cover you throughout your lifetime, unlike term policies, which only cover you for a specific amount of time. Each time you pay premiums, the guaranteed cash value within the policy grows on a tax-deferred basis. The cash can be withdrawn if you need to pay for big life expenses.

Costs of whole life insurance vs. term life insurance

Although a whole life insurance policy can cost up to 4 times as much as a term policy, it offers long-term financial benefits term policies can’t. Because term life insurance policies are not permanent, the death benefits expire at the end of the predetermined term. You can often renew the policy, but at a higher premium. Also, unless you have level premium term life insurance, term life insurance may be more inexpensive at the outset, but premiums can increase after a certain amount of time.

Financial benefits of whole life insurance

Whole life insurance is permanent, meaning as long as you pay the fixed premium regularly, your designated beneficiary will receive your death benefit. These funds should be sufficient to cover funeral and burial costs, as well as support the beneficiary for some time in the event of your unexpected death.

Premium rates are determined by your age and health; the younger and healthier you are, the more favorable policy terms will be.

Dividends

Whole life insurance doesn’t only deliver benefits when you die. Owners of a “participating policy” typically receive dividends, which are paid out annually over the whole life of the policy. Policies that are considered “non-participating” won’t pay out dividends.

Tax-free loans

Because a portion of your premium goes into a cash-value account, you can typically access the money in this reserve through a cash payment or by taking a policy loan. Withdrawing from the cash reserve does not mean ending the policy.  You may choose a cash reserve that accrues in addition to the death benefit or a cash reserve that becomes the death benefit. In the first few years of owning a policy, its cash value will usually be lower than the face amount. You also may have to wait up to 3 years before accessing money for a loan.

When borrowing from the whole life policy, the cash value of a policy is used as collateral and a pre-determined interest rate will be charged, but the loan won’t be taxed. Typically these loans have low interest rates. If you choose not to repay the loan, the loan amount would be subtracted from the death benefit. These loans can be used for pursuits such as paying off a mortgage, as capital for a small business, or for college tuition. Upon the death of the insured or the surrender of a policy, any outstanding loan amount will be deducted from the death benefit or from the cash value if cash was withdrawn.

Paying for estate taxes

You can also use a whole life insurance policy to set up a trust that will provide funds to pay estate taxes. These funds, much like a loan, are usually not taxed because the IRS generally does not consider death benefits to be taxable income.

Other investment benefits

A whole life insurance policy is overall a stable investment. The cash value is guaranteed by the insurance company and, unlike a traditional investment, is not subject to the ebbs and flows of the stock market. Because this kind of savings account growth is tax-deferred, funds will accumulate faster with a whole life insurance policy than with investments that are taxed annually.

Petrol rates hit 4-year low

Supermarkets are cutting petrol prices again – Sainsbury’s and Tesco are dropping prices by as much as 5p per litre as of today, while Asda is knocking 1p off a litre of petrol and up to 2p off diesel.

f34dd tesco petrol

And given that forecourt prices are already at their lowest levels for around 3 years (the average cost of a litre of unleaded is 129p), these fresh price cuts mean we’ll be paying less for our fuel than at any time since 2010.

Petrol price war

The main driver for the price cuts is an attempt by the UK’s major supermarkets to lure us away from discount chains such as Aldi and Lidl – petrol is one of the few effective weapons they have in this ongoing battle.

The result of the Scottish independence referendum has also played its part, however. Since the No vote, the value of the pound has risen against the dollar, meaning the wholesale price of petrol (which is priced in dollars on international markets) has dropped.

The good news for motorists is that these savings are being passed straight on via cheaper prices at the pumps.

f34dd Asda petrol

Distance/saving equation

If you know a petrol station a few miles from where you live is offering cheaper prices than your local forecourt, it can be tempting to make a trip to fill up.

But there comes a point when the distance involved and the saving available stops it being worthwhile.

You can find out whether that applies in your case using our fuel cost calculator.

Pressure points

It’s not good news for everyone, though, as more price cuts will inevitably put more pressure on independent filling stations, which could well lead to more closures.

Figures from the Petrol Retailers Association have revealed that, over the last 5 years, almost 900 independent filling stations have disappeared from the roadside, more than a third of which are in rural areas.

For more on the plight of independent filling stations, read Kevin’s article Are we running out of petrol stations?

Cutting your fuel consumption

Seeing as we’re going to be paying less for our petrol, now is as good a time as any to increase those savings by making your fuel go further, so here ae some tried and trusted ways to cut your fuel consumption…

  • Drive more considerately – Harsh accelerating and breaking leads to greater fuel consumption, so watch how you drive and pull away slowly and break gradually.

  • Cut your speed – one of the simplest ways to cut your fuel consumption is to cut your speed. For instance, driving at 70mph uses 9% more fuel than driving at 60mph, and 15% more than driving at 50mph.

  • Check your tyres – a drop in tyre pressure of just 0.4 bar, or 6 PSI, can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20%, so check pressures weekly and keep them topped up

  • Don’t drive as much – an obvious one, but cutting out unnecessary journeys can really lead to significant savings.

  • Clear out the clutter – if your car is full of clutter, you’ll increase your fuel consumption by around 1% for every extra 25kg of w7 So clear out that clutter.

  • Cut the air-con – using the air con to keep cool can increase fuel consumption by as much as 25%, so you’re better off driving with the vents open and the windows down. If, however, you’re travelling at speeds of more than 60mph, wind the windows up and put the air-con on as the drag on the car at high speeds uses even more fuel.

Report: Mass. Auto Rates Dipped After ’08, but Crept Up Considering that

What You Need to Know:

DOI officials told the Boston Globe that the pattern was related to deregulation of other industries: prices initially dip before rising again.

That average in 2012 was nonetheless 4 % reduce than the average in 2007 and 15 percent reduce than in 2005, Joseph Murphy, the state’s commissioner of insurance, stated in a Boston Globe editorial published Monday. Murphy referred to as the pre-2008 industry “dysfunctional.”

Deregulation encouraged competitors in the Massachusetts auto insurance market and began introducing drivers in Massachusetts to kinds of insurance coverage they wouldn’t have regarded ahead of 2008, according to Murphy.

“[M]any shoppers have responded [to the competitive market] by raising their coverage limits or acquiring newly available, revolutionary merchandise, such as accident forgiveness and roadside assistance, to safeguard themselves and their families,” he said.

Report: Ohio’s Biggest Insurers Raised Their Rates Final Year

98e99 Ohio rate change history 2014
Nearly all of the greatest vehicle insurers in Ohio increased their premiums final year, according to a new report from the Ohio Department of Insurance coverage (ODI).

For 2012-13, the general rate increase for Ohio’s 10 largest insurers was 2.6 %. As a entire, these leading 10 carriers have raised their prices every year given that 2008.

According to the ODI, 9 out of the 10 biggest automobile insurers in Ohio enhanced their premiums in 2013.

However, the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII) notes that the typical auto insurance premium in Ohio this year is still less expensive than it was 12 years ago.

A recent report from the OII estimated that the typical auto premium in 2014 for the Buckeye State is $ 669. In 2003, the typical was $ 672, according to the OII, which primarily based the nationwide figure on NAIC information.

The latest concrete figures are from NAIC data in 2011, when Buckeye State drivers paid $ 177 much less for automobile insurance coverage than the U.S. typical, $ 620 to $ 797, the OII stated.

In reality, those figure give Ohio the 10th-least expensive spot in rankings of the lowest average rates in the U.S., based on “what consumers actually invest on auto insurance” for liability coverage, which is required in practically all states.

Here are these rankings:
