As drivers are caught carrying out up to 146 mph on the road, the Institute of Advanced Motorists calls for a adjust in people’s attitudes to driving.

Ever had a speeding ticket? What had been you undertaking – 5, 10 miles over the limit?

How about carrying out 4 occasions the speed limit in a residential zone?

That is what the Institute of Sophisticated Motorists (IAM) found out when they looked at the highest recorded speeds from every single constabulary in England and Wales.

The worst offender was clocked carrying out 128 mph on London Road in East Grinstead, Sussex – a 30 mph zone.

This is what that road looks like:

Who in their correct mind would drive at 4 instances the speed limit on a road like this?

The quickest recorded speed was 146 mph, where 2 distinct drivers on the M25 had been caught going at more than twice the speed limit.

Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, mentioned:

“At speeds of 140 mph an individual is travelling at nearly 2-and-a-half miles a minute.

“At that speed it is just not possible to react to something that might happen in front of you.

At that kind of speed, your total stopping distance is elevated to 143 metres – about 85 automobile lengths.

65c94 stopping distances

If you require support visualising what 140mph appears like, this video sums it up quite properly (it is on a motorbike but you get the idea):

On motorways, speeders had been caught driving twice the limit, averaging speeds of about 125 mph.

Even in places exactly where 40 and 50 mph site visitors-calming limits have been introduced, the worst offenders have been driving at an average of 110 mph.

According to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), the general leeway for issuing a speeding penalty is 10% + 2 mph.

So if you’re driving on a motorway, something previous 79 mph is most likely to get you fined or worse.

But drivers on Intelligent motorways such as the M1, M2, M6 and M25 are using cameras to catch drivers who are only going a couple of miles per hour more than the limit.

In 2013, 3,064 people have been either killed or seriously injured in crashes exactly where speed was a factor.

Rule 125 of the Highway Code states that the speed limit is the absolute maximum and ought to not be deemed a target.

Based on road conditions e.g. ice, even driving at the speed limit can be dangerous.

This still does not cease individuals from breaking the speed limit and posting the benefits on social media:

Pro tip #1: Don’t drive over the speed limit.

Pro tip #2: If you ignored #1, do not take images of you breaking the law and post them on the internet where everybody can see. The police have Twitter also, you know.

Sarah Sillars said: “In quick, all these individuals are playing with their own lives and others – they are all accidents waiting to happen and it requires a significant shift in the attitudes of these men and women to think about safety.”

If You Doubted the NY Times Killing Its Auto Section Was a Poor Thought, Study This Evaluation of the New Mustang

This weekend’s Sunday New York Times Automobiles section will be the Gray Lady’s last the paper has decided—perhaps foolishly—for enterprise motives to no longer publish what had turn out to be, over 20 years, a weekend ritual for those of us in the enterprise and a lot of of you reading this now.

The closure hits home for us for a couple of motives. Initial, several Automobile and Driver staffers and contributors past and present had written for the section, which was edited by the estimable Jim Cobb. Second, numerous of our friends and colleagues—including, yes, Cobb—lost their jobs. The Instances will continue to publish automotive content on Fridays and in its company section, but for all intents and purposes, this is it, folks. The Instances already shuttered its automotive news blog final year.

One of our pals and frequent contributors, John Pearley Huffman, has a review of the new Ford Mustang in the final Automobiles section in which he, as he mentioned in a Facebook post, “took the opportunity to drift away from writing strictly about the 2015 Mustang and make [the] case that reviewing automobiles is something each newspaper and The Instances in distinct must be doing. Specifically if they claim to be providing any insight to American culture.” We couldn’t agree far more, Pearley. Study the assessment in its entirety here, and pick up a copy of The Times this weekend to savor the section in its entirety one final time.

Testing times for parent drivers

If you have been asked to take your driving test right now, do you feel you would pass?

Several parents are not also positive. In a survey by the Goodyear Driving Academy, an interactive on the web tool that promotes road safety amongst young men and women, practically 3 quarters of mums and dads (72%) believed they would fail if they had to take the test again.

c3686 young driver lessons

It is a bit worrying, actually. Here are the principal locations of concern…

Memory issues

An alarming proportion of parents are baffled by the rules of the road – 37% claim they do not understand all the ‘new’ regulations.

They are forgetful, too, particularly the females. One particular in 5 female drivers (22%) say they can no longer don’;t forget much of their instruction.

Poor habits

Then there are all those undesirable habits. Nearly half of parents (48%) admit they have picked up bad habits because they very first passed their driving test.

Consuming at the wheel is a single of the most widespread, with about half of parents munching whilst they drive.

Mobile menace

It gets worse. About a quarter (23%) have read a text message whilst on the move, which is downright harmful, not to mention illegal. The number is even greater amongst young parents, at 30% for these below the age of 30.

Talking of unsafe, far more than 1 in 10 confesses to driving by means of a red light at a targeted traffic junction.

See how some of the MoneySuperMarket group got on when they took their test again…

Road rage

Road rage is one more undesirable habit – and if you are expecting gender stereotypical behaviour, you will be disappointed. It turns out that road rage is much more common amongst women than guys.

The survey identified that 20% of mums had knowledgeable road rage compared with 17% of dads.

Role models

What’s going on? Do parents not realise that kids mimic their behaviour? Maybe not. Practically half (44%) fondly picture their driving habits will have no influence on their children, although over a third (36%) think it will only impact children who are at least 14 years old.

Back seat drivers

At least the youngsters have got far more sense than their parents. Apparently, 15% of parents have been told off by their children when driving and a third of all parents (33%) lack self-confidence if their young children are sitting in the back seat, which is hardly surprising if they are consuming, texting and operating red lights on a regular basis

Kate Rock, spokesperson for the Goodyear Driving Academy, is admirably restrained: “It is understandable that parents’ driving expertise is most likely to deteriorate more than time and this lack of self-confidence is reflected in the huge numbers of parents who do not feel they’d pass their driving test once more.

“Parents play a hugely influential function in their children’s improvement and could be passing undesirable habits on, especially when it comes to frequent “ferrying about” in the auto. We want to support these folks to assistance their child’s young driver education from a much earlier age but they should very first make sure that their personal driving abilities are up to scratch.”

Generation gaps

So who are these men and women? Must they be allowed on the road? They certainly shouldn’t teach any individual else to drive, and but 40% would happily give lessons to a friend or relative.

Mike Frisby, chief examiner at the Driving Instructors Association, is surprisingly forgiving: “Many parents are not undesirable drivers, they just fail to update their expertise and fall into bad habits over time, escalating their threat when driving.

“They require to be conscious of the very influential part they play in young driver education, and that their youngsters even though passengers in the auto, can choose up on their habits from a extremely young age.

“By consciously displaying excellent driving habits and behaviours, it is more probably that their children will become safer drivers in the future.”

So if you do not want to raise a generation of unsafe drivers, it’s time to kick these undesirable habits and sharpen up these expertise. You know who you are!

Goodyear Driving Academy has launched its ‘Parent Pack’ to support parents brush up on capabilities and play a a lot more conscious part in their child’s early driver education.
