Premiums on the way down
It’s great news for home owners! Reversing a trend of overall cost-of-living increases, CANSTAR’s analysis has found that in almost every state and territory, premiums for home insurance and contents insurance have been on the decline.
To a certain extent these falls mitigate some of the sharp increases in cost experienced over the past 2 years; increases that resulted from several recent and highly-publicised natural disasters.
Those increases reflected the increased cost of reinsurance and claims loss suffered by many insurers.
With a new report issued this month by the Climate Council (Counting the Costs: Climate Change and Coastal Flooding) estimating a significant future increase in “1 in 100-year” events over the coming decades, it will be interesting to track general insurance prices over that time.
