Castrol Team Toyota clinches Donaldson Cross Country Championship

6b164 Donaldson Championship

Toyota 1st and 2nd in overall 2014 Championship

  • Toyota 1st and 2nd in Class S Championship

  • Toyota 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th in Atlas Copco Gold 450 production vehicles

  • Toyota 1st and 2nd in Atlas Copco Gold 450 Class S

  • Toyota won all classes entered in all championships (cross country and rally) in 2014

In a race with more plot twists and heart-stopping moments than an afternoon soap opera, defending champions Anthony Taylor and Dennis Murphy added the 2014 Donaldson Cross Country Championship title to Castrol Team Toyota’s tally for the year. The pair finished fifth overall – high enough to bag the title – in the Atlas Copco Gold 450 after a disappointing qualifying round that saw them start the race from the back of the field.

“Anthony and Dennis really drove an amazing race,” said Team Principal Glyn Hall after the final event of the season. “They had to take part in the mass start, but they fought back relentlessly and finished 5th when the dust settled. Enough to win the 2014 title by what turned out to be a comfortable margin in the end.”

Taylor/Murphy was embroiled in a battle for the title with the Malalane Toyota crew of Johan and Werner Horn, who ironically campaign Taylor’s championship-winning Toyota Hilux from 2013. Just 14 points separated the 2 teams before the final round, and when things didn’t go according to plan for Taylor/Murphy in the prologue, which determines the all-important start positions for the main event, it was clear that the fight was going to go to the wire.

“A rogue rock damaged one of our rear brake lines early in the prologue,” explains Taylor. “We lost nearly half an hour as we sorted things out, and even though we eventually got going again we had to settle for the mass start – not the place from which to win a championship.”

But champions don’t become champions because they lack tenacity, and Taylor/Murphy are proven champions. So they fought back throughout the 350 km route of the main event, overtaking an impressive number of competitors in the process, and placing themselves in a position to capitalise on any problems the front-runners may have. Their tenacity paid off, as they finished in 5th place – just 2 spots behind the Horn brothers, and enough to secure their second title on the trot.

Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie, in the second Castrol Team Toyota Hilux started strong. Despite suffering a puncture in the prologue, the pair posted a time just 6 minutes off the leading pace, and they came out of the blocks charging hard in the main event. An unfortunate accident near a road crossing saw them collide with one of the special vehicles ahead of them, which caused significant damage to their Toyota Hilux’s oil cooling system. They were forced to retire, and as a result had to settle for 4th overall in the championship.

In Class S for older-spec race vehicles it was 4×4 Megaworld’s Deon Venter and Jaco van Aardt, who took class honours in their Toyota Hilux, pipping newly crowned class champions Jannie Visser and Joks le Roux (Ruwacon Racing Toyota Hilux) by 10 minutes. Despite the class win, Venter/Van Aardt had to settle for second place in the championship.

“We are overjoyed by our motorsport results this year,” says Hall. “Thanks to the great results achieved by some of the privateers who also race Toyota products, we have won every single class we entered in 2014, in both the South African National Rally Championship and the Donaldson Cross-Country championship.”

Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee bagged the South African National Rally Championship title in their Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000, while Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle achieved the same in Class S1600 (Yato Toyota Etios R2). In the Cross Country Championship it was Taylor/Murphy in Class T (the top class for production vehicles), and Visser/Le Roux in Class S.

“It was a fantastic year for us,” says newly crowned champion Anthony Taylor. “The team did an amazing job, and the Hilux was as reliable as ever. What a feeling to win 2 championships in a row!”

Castrol Team Toyota fielded the 2 newly built Dakar Toyota Hilux race vehicles on the Atlas Copco Gold 450. These same vehicles will depart for South America on December 15th, and be on the start line for the world’s toughest motor race on January 4th 2015.

Toyota consolidates Championship lead on Vryburg 450

b82c2 Vryburg rally

  • Second place in Production Vehicles for Taylor/Murphy

  • Third place in Production Vehicles for Kock/Burger

  • First in Class S for Venter/Van Aardt

  • Second in Class S for Visser/Le Roux

  • 6 Toyota Hiluxes in Top Ten

  • Manufacturer’;s Award

The Vryburg 450 - spiritual home of cross-country racing in South Africa, which took place on 12 and 13 September this year, gave Castrol Team Toyota a golden opportunity to consolidate their lead in the championship. And that’;s exactly what defending champion Anthony Taylor and navigator Dennis Murphy did on the dusty dirt roads around the Northwest towns of Vryburg, Louwna and Excelsior.

The prologue, which is a shorter section of the race route, is run on the Friday before each round of the Donaldson Cross-Country Championship. On the Vryburg 450, which formed round 6 of the 8-round series, this constituted a 100 km-long test on some of the fastest roads the competitors have seen all year.

Taylor/Murphy got off to a perfect start, by posting the fastest time of all the production vehicles during the prologue. This put them third overall on the road, and first of the near-Dakar spec bakkies in Class T. With a good road position, the pair proceeded to do what they do best: Go fast! Unfortunately their progress was hampered by a puncture, which allowed Ford driver Chris Visser to overtake them. The dusty conditions made it impossible for Taylor to overtake Visser again, despite catching the Ford shortly after replacing the shredded tyre on the Toyota Hilux.

“During the second loop we decided to settle down and take the points for second place,” explains Taylor. “It just wasn’;t worth taking a big risk to overtake Chris, because one rock in the wrong place could have easily ended our championship hopes.”

Things didn’;t go quite as smoothly for teammates Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie, in the second Castrol Team Toyota Hiliux (T23). They had an issue with their on-board GPS during the prologue, and ended up following the wrong route. This cost them 6 minutes in the end, and placed Poulter in 11th place (Production Vehicles) for the start. With a fair number of competitors ahead of him, and no wind to help clear the dust, Poulter/Howie had their work cut out. The pair clearly had the bit between their teeth, though, as they scythed their way up into 5th place – bagging 11 points for their efforts, despite having to endure 3 punctures during the day.

This means that Taylor now has a 14 point lead over Malalane Toyota’;s Johan Horn (T17), who finished 8th in Vryburg after a tough prologue, though in reality each team has to drop the points from one event at the end of the year. With just 2 rounds to go, Taylor’;s lead is really 22 points, as the Horn brothers (Johan and Werner) will have to drop their worst performance, which thanks to a highly consistent year, means they will have to lose 8 points as things stand at present. Poulter remains steady in third place on the championship standings.

Another notable Toyota performance on the Vryburg 450 was that of local lads Malcolm Kock and navigator Johan Burger, who came third in the production category. The pair had a disappointing race at the Toyota 1000 Desert Race in June, but was clearly on form at their home event.

In Class S, for production vehicles with solid rear axels and engines no larger than 4,000 cc, it was 4×4 Megaworld’;s Deon Venter and navigator Jaco van Aardt who brought their Toyota Hilux home in first position. They were followed home by Jannie Visser and Joks le Roux in the Ruwacon Racing Toyota Hilux.

As a result of the great performances of all the Toyota crews, there were 6 Toyota Hiluxes in the Top Ten at Vryburg. This was good enough to hand the Manufacturer’;s prize to Toyota yet again.

The next race on the calendar is the Ford Dealer 450, which traditionally takes place in the area around Thaba ‘Nchu in the Freestate. This will be round 6 in the championship, and it all kicks off on 24 October, 2014.

Imperial Toyota puts its weight behind Cullinan Rally – Round 5 of the SA National Rally Championship

313d3 Rally Toyota 1024x681

Imperial Toyota today announced its financial support of the Cullinan Rally, round 5 of the South African National Rally Championship. The event, which takes place on August 15 and 16, 2014, will again feature spectacular rally stages in and around the town of Cullinan, Northeast of Pretoria, Gauteng.

“When we heard that the event was without a sponsor, we decided increase our support of the National Rally Championship (NRC),” said Imperial Toyota Managing Director Andrew Miller.

Without Imperial Toyota’;s support, the Cullinan Rally was in danger of becoming a drearyaffair, rather than the spectacular event it now promises to be. With 2 completely new stages for 2014, as well as the involvement of the Northern Regions regional championship on both days of the event, the Cullinan Rally promises to be a spectator’;s delight thanks to the support from Imperial Toyota.

“As it stands we already support Giniel de Villiers and Greg Godrich, in the Imperial Toyota Yaris S2000,” continued Miller. “The car is prepared by Glyn Hall of Toyota Motorsport South Africa, and has shown a lot of promise in 2014. As such we feel very much a part of the NRC, and our support of the Cullinan Rally feels like a natural extension of our involvement.”

Imperial Toyota has a proud history of motorsport involvement, and firmly believes in the mantra “what wins on Sunday, sells on Monday”. As such the company has utilised motorsport to grow their own brand, as well as that of Toyota, for more than a quarter of a century. It started in the Production Car era, when Imperial Toyota sponsored a highly competitive Class B Toyota Corolla, and continues to this day with its sponsorship of the Imperial Team Toyota Dakar entry campaigned by 2010 Dakar winner Giniel de Villiers.

The company has dealerships in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape; and is part of the Imperial Automotive Retail group, which in turn forms part of the listed Imperial Group.
