2016 Jaguar XF Revealed! Less Weight, A lot more Tech

With its redesign for 2016, the Jaguar XF follows the complete-size XJ and the new XE into the property of aluminum. In addition to the attendant weight loss, the new XF also sees a significant increase in its tech offerings, while its engine lineup is sharply decreased.

The switch from an all-steel structure sees the mid-size luxury-sport sedan, which very first created its debut for the 2009 model year, shed considerable mass. Jaguar is quoting a 132-pound weight loss for the rear-wheel-drive model and an impressive 265-pound cut for the all-wheel-drive version. Helping matters is the truth that the automobile has not grown any bigger. The overall package size is retained, but the car’s wheelbase grows by 2 inches. The wheelbase stretch yields a lot more rear-seat space, a welcome improvement. Nevertheless, Jaguar is claiming bumps of significantly less than an inch in rear-seat knee- and legroom, which is significantly less than we may possibly have hoped.

The new styling is largely evolutionary, not surprising offered that the preceding car ushered in Jaguar’s existing style language. Although the whole automobile is new, the most noticeably fresh elements may possibly be the headlights (accessible as complete LEDs), the taillights (which take their cue from the F-type’s), and the elongated greenhouse that now involves quarter-windows in the C-pillars.

Will That Be a V-6, or a V-6?

The dramatically shrunken engine lineup is lowered to just 2 versions of the 3.-liter supercharged V-6. This is the exact same 3.-liter supercharged V-6 as just before, producing an identical 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It is joined by a new, 380-hp version of the engine in the XF S, but that iteration also produces 332 lb-ft. Both versions of the V-6 use an 8-speed automatic—with gear choice by Jaguar’s dial shifter—and can be had with rear- or all-wheel drive. Jaguar predicts a 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph time for each the AWD XF and the RWD XF S, with the AWD XF S finishing a single-tenth quicker than that and the RWD XF one particular-tenth behind.

With entry-level-sedan duties now handled by the new XE, the Ford-sourced 2.-liter turbocharged 4 does not return (and we can’t say that we’ll miss it). Nor does the 5.-liter supercharged V-8, which in the outgoing vehicle was great for between 470 and 550 horsepower (the latter in the ultra-limited-edition XFR-S). The subsequent engine to join the lineup for the new XF will be a 2.-liter turbo-diesel, component of JLR’s new Ingenium family of engines. It promises highway fuel economy of about 40 mpg but won’t come onstream till about 6 months soon after launch.

As on AWD versions of the F-type, the setup here can brake an inside wheel to boost cornering. Both the common dampers and the optional adaptive dampers have been retuned. When paired with all-wheel drive, the latter includes what Jaguar calls Adaptive Surface Response, which functions as a self-actuating winter mode when slippery road conditions are detected. The active dampers—along with the steering effort, throttle sensitivity, and transmission shift mapping—also can be configured by means of 3 driver-selectable modes.

Virtually Like a Trip to CES

The new XF also pours on the tech elsewhere. New systems and functions incorporate a head-up show, forward-collision warning with automated braking, lane-maintaining help (enabling brief bouts of hands-cost-free driving), adaptive cruise handle that can automatically creep along in stop-and-go visitors, a driver-drowsiness monitor, and semiautomated parking (parallel and perpendicular). A function known as Intelligent Speed Limiter, which can read speed-limit signs and automatically adjust the cruise control to maintain the auto specifically at the speed limit, sounds like a bit of a killjoy to us.

The far better news is that Jaguar’s slow-acting, considerably-loathed touch-screen interface has been junked in favor of a new, bigger unit with the grandiose name InControl Touch Pro. Debuting on the new XF, it features a 10.2-inch screen, boasts more rapidly-acting strong-state drive (SSD) map storage, a quad-core processor, and net-primarily based functions. The hardware should hopefully address the major problem we had with the lesser InControl system in the course of our drive of the XE, namely slow responses. Above the XF’s standard InControl Touch system, Pro adds the bigger screen an interactive, 360-degree view of nav-technique destinations widgets that can supply a shortcut to favorite attributes and dead-reckoning functionality that can pinpoint the car’s position when a GPS signal is unavailable.

Although we hope the new program functions properly, we expect that the new XF will be more rewarding for those drivers who can direct their interest away from the screen. Even at 6 years old, the outgoing XF is one particular of the ideal-driving automobiles in the segment, so we have higher hopes for this new version.

Fleet tyre maintenance worth its weight in rubber

Ineffective management and maintenance of fleet tyres can affect the performance of a company’s fleet and give rise to unnecessary and costly operational expenditure, which severely impacts on an organisation’s bottom line, warns the South African Tyre Manufacturer’s Conference (SATMC).

As the focus of all businesses shift to budgeting and improving on past performance with the dawning of the new financial year, the SATMC urges all fleet managers to plan and budget for routine tyre checks, maintenance and timely replacement of tyres to assist them with containing cost.

“A fleet that is fit for purpose and operates cost-effectively and efficiently is worth its weight in rubber,” says Dr Etienne Human, CEO and Director of the SATMC. “Having a comprehensive budget for fleet management in place can help curb any unexpected price escalations that may affect your business or its profitability.”

Human shares tips for keeping costs to a minimum during all stages of the fleet tyre lifecycle, including procurement, maintenance, running and disposal, that can help fleet managers save time and money during the 2015 financial year.

PROCUREMENT

When procuring tyres for fleets, the speeds, distances, loads, poor road surfaces, heat, likelihood of scuffing against pavements and objects on the roads and in quarries, all need to be taken into consideration.

“Opting for the cheapest tyres does not automatically translate into a cost saving,” says Human. “Fleet managers need to weigh the price in relation to the quality of the tyre to ensure that they procure tyres that will result in the lowest cost per km.”

Tyres supplied by the South African tyre manufacturers, including Bridgestone, Continental, Sumitomo and Goodyear, are designed and manufactured for the harsh South African conditions. “It is not uncommon to hear that they last twice as long as some imported tyres, which could ultimately result in a huge cost saving,” says Human.

MAINTENANCE

“Regular tyre inspections and early detection of any damage to tyres are vital to prevent premature tyre failure and keeping maintenance costs to a minimum,” says Human.

Fleet managers and drivers have a duty to maintain their vehicles to the highest standards, which means checking all levels regularly, especially tyre pressures, tread depth and checking for damage to tyres. “Under-inflated tyres is not only dangerous, but also contributes to a significant cost increment for organisations due to prematurely worn tyres and resulting road accidents,” warns Human.

Any damage on tyres could cause tyre failure, including punctures, smooth tyre tread, cuts and bulges. “Although some damage to tyres can be fixed, no repairs can be made to the sidewall of passenger and light commercial vehicle type tyre and not all repairs are permanent,” Human explains. “Using a quick spaghetti type repair to seal a penetrated tyre is temporary and should be replaced with a proper mushroom type repair, where the tyre is removed, inspected and properly repaired as soon as possible.”

RUNNING

“Educating drivers to take better care of their vehicles will further reduce wear and tear on tyres and brakes, in turn reducing maintenance and repair costs, as well as improving fuel consumption, amounting to a massive cost saving,” says Human. “Driver training should be regarded as part of an ongoing management process, to ensure optimum running.”

Informed and gentle drivers will further result in reduced vehicle and driver downtime, which result in both hard savings including reduced repair costs and soft savings, by keeping the vehicle and the driver on the road safely.

DISPOSAL

“Delaying replacing aged tyres or worn tyres with a below regulatory tread depth is likely to result in additional expenditures, due to the knock-on effect of ultimate tyre failure,” says Human. “Accidents or breakdowns next to the road due to unroadworthy tyres will result in high costs, which could easily be avoided.”

To reduce the risk of tyre failure and its effect on business cost and performance, all tyres need to be replaced well before they reach the tread wear indicator or regulatory minimum depth of 1mm and regardless of how much tread is left, it is recommended that tyres be replaced at around the age of 5 to 7 years.

The A6 wagon returns?

As of late, each and every automaker is boasting colossal weight savings realized from redesigning traditionally heavy vehicles making use of far more lightweight supplies. Land Rover claimed to have shaved as a lot of as 926 pounds from the latest Variety Rover—our scales showed perhaps half that savings—and Ford has trumpeted the 2015 F-150’s aluminum body as saving 700 pounds versus its predecessor. Now Audi’s all-new Q7 SUV arrives touting a curb weight that is 717 pounds lighter than just before.

That’s a lot of fat to trim, but simplifying the process was the fact that the last-gen Q7 was veritably overengineered. It sat on a platform shared with Volkswagen’s Touareg and Porsche’s Cayenne, underpinnings created to provide huge-time off-road ability as such, the bones have been heavier and beefier than needed for those vehicles’ day-to-day tasks.

Let Jeep Have the Off-Road Enterprise, We’ve Got Carbs to Cut

Freed from requiring major off-pavement ability, Audi was in a position to pull weight out of the Q7’s MLB II body structure, suspension, and even its transmission. A mix of high- and ultra-high-strength steel comprises the lion’s share of the SUV’s physique-in-white employing aluminum most everywhere else—the fenders, hood, doors, and the tailgate—means the fundamental vehicle has shed 209 pounds. A further 221 pounds was pulled out of the Q7’s suspension, which switches from front manage arms to multiple hyperlinks at all 4 corners and is produced almost totally from aluminum and high-strength steel. The front half-shafts are hollow, and the knuckles are forged-aluminum pieces. More pounds were identified by incorporating the transfer case into the 8-speed automatic transmission and by streamlining the electrical architecture.

Even even though the 2016 Q7 is practically the very same height as the old one particular, it looks reduce, wider, and longer. In fact, thanks to clever visual tricks like the matte-aluminum trim surface amongst the front and rear wheels, the gently tapering roofline, and the powerful fender flares, the new Q7 looks a lot more wagonlike than ever. The low-rider vibe isn’t merely visual: Audi’s relocation of the engine lower in the chassis has yanked the Q7’s center of gravity down by a claimed 2 inches.

The jury remains out amongst our employees on the Q7’s new grille design and style, borrowed from 2012’s Crosslane Coupé notion, is amazing or deserving of a fiery death, but there’s no query that every thing aft of the single-frame piece is hot. Simply because we can not speak about a new Audi without having investigating what, if any, adjustments have been created to its lighting elements, we need to point out that the headlights’ LED operating lamps now type pairs of arrow-shaped elements. And the rear finish as a complete positively sizzles.

An Audi With a Nice Interior? Shocking . . .

Issues get even far better inside, where occupants face an all-new dashboard that seems to house full-width HVAC vents. (The actual openings are only in the anticipated central and outboard places, but the effect is gorgeous nonetheless.) A 6-inch screen rises from the dashtop to display pertinent audio, navigation, and vehicle information, and the driver can toggle amongst these menus via Audi’s most current-generation MMI infotainment controller and touch pad. The very same gloriously sharp 12.3-inch TFT instrument-cluster display that debuted in the 2016 TT sports auto is available right here, as is a 4G LTE data connection to feed the onboard Wi-Fi. A pair of 10.1-inch tablets can be fitted to the front seatbacks and are linked to the main MMI program.

In addition to getting nicer to eyeball, the Q7’s cabin is also nicer to occupy. There’s an added .8 inch of second-row legroom, and headroom increases by 1.6 inches in front and .9 inch in the second row. There is nonetheless a pair of pop-up third-row seats, and the middle row can be scooched fore and aft by up to 4.3 inches, as properly as fold forward to enable access to the way back. There are now LATCH child-seat anchors in all 5 rear seats, as effectively as one in the front passenger chair, which means single parents with a stressful-sounding quantity of young kids can fit their Q7s with up to 6 youngster seats. In spite of a slightly narrower and shorter physique, the Q7’s cargo capacity increases slightly. Audi also lowered the cargo opening 1.8 inches and creating a energy tailgate common. Foot motion–activated operation is optional.

Automobile Insurers’ Web sites Carry Weight for Younger Shoppers

1d2fe Computer1
Generation Yers—or millennials—are less probably than Baby Boomers to pick an auto insurance organization due to the fact it has the lowest value, according to a new J.D. Power survey measuring how shoppers feel about insurers’ sites.
