Uber Launches in Oregon City Approval

The ridesharing app Uber has launched in Portland, Ore. without having city approval.

The app started functioning Friday at 5 p.m., and drivers have been able to instantly begin supplying rides, regional manager Brooke Stever said.

“I don’t believe we’re going against the city’s wishes,” Stever told KGW-Television. “We hope the city embraces this and listens to their constituents, the people of Portland and drivers partnering with us.”

But there’s small likelihood of that happening. City Commissioner Steve Novick said Uber is breaking a law that prohibits unlicensed taxis, and the city is prepared to levy hefty fines against drivers and the business.

“There’s nothing sharing about this so-known as `sharing economy’ company,” Novick said. “They want to profit in Portland without having playing by the identical rules as existing cab businesses.”

Uber offers automobile service in 250 cities in 50 countries, and it has been fighting regulatory hurdles in a lot of places.

Minutes soon after Uber began offering Portland service, code enforcement officers logged onto the app in an try to catch drivers violating taxi regulations. But demand was so high that they couldn’t book a ride, The Oregonian reported.

Novick sent 2 code enforcement officers and a staff member to stand outdoors a downtown Portland hotel to catch Uber drivers.

Standing on Southwest Broadway, Novick policy adviser Bryan Hockaday and Frank Dufay, the city’s private-for-employ-transportation manager, couldn’t get the app to book a ride.

“I believe they’ve blocked me and Frank,” Hockaday mentioned. “You have to sign up with your real name. It won’t let you use a fake one particular.”

Erich England, a city code enforcement officer, said 2 Uber drivers canceled on him when he asked for a 6-block ride. When he realized they may favor passengers in search of a longer ride, there were no drivers accessible.

“I guess we’ll try it once again some other time,” he mentioned.

Oregon City fines Uber business For Failure to Get License

The city of Eugene, Ore. has fined the ridesharing business Uber $ 2,000 for failing to get a city license, and a city official says the fine could be repeated every day.

But the Eugene Register-Guard reported that regardless of whether Uber appeals the fine or pays up is questionable, given that the firm and other people like it have ignored fines and resisted regulation in other cities.

Uber began operating in Eugene and neighboring Springfield in July. As in other cities, that angered standard cab companies that have to get licenses and spend annual costs.

An Uber manager didn’t address the fines especially in a statement but stated the business would defend the rights of Uber users and help Uber drivers.

Uber customers download its app and hail rides from pools of independent drivers.

Oregon Crashed Caused by Man Holding Breath in Tunnel

A 19-year-old man caused a 3-auto crash when he fainted even though holding his breath as he drove via a tunnel northwest of Portland, Oregon State Police said.

Daniel J. Calhon, of Snohomish, Washington, told investigators he fainted Sunday afternoon while holding his breath in the Highway 26 tunnel close to the neighborhood of Manning, according to a news release. His vehicle, a 1990 Toyota Camry, drifted across the centerline and crashed head-on with a Ford Explorer.

Both automobiles struck the tunnel walls just before a pickup hit the Camry.

Calhon and his passenger, 19-year-old Bradley Meyring, of Edmonds, Washington, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, as did the 2 men and women in the Explorer: Thomas Hatch Jr., 67, and Candace Hatch, 61, from Astoria. All 4 had been taken to hospitals.

The 2 men and women in the pickup were not hurt.

Calhon was cited for reckless driving, 3 counts of reckless endangerment and 4th-degree assault in Washington County Circuit Court. It was not clear if he had a lawyer.

State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings mentioned Monday he’s not sure why Calhon was holding his breath, but some men and women hold their breaths in tunnels as part of a game or superstition.

The tunnel, known as the Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel, was completed in 1940 and carries the highway by means of the Northern Oregon Coast Range mountains. It’s 772 feet long, meaning that a automobile traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 mph would get by way of it in about 10 seconds.

Oregon Road Trip, Part 3 - 2014 Acura MDX AWD Extended-Term Road Test

2014 Acura MDX: Oregon Road Trip, Element 3

Could 30, 2014

df785 2014 acura mdx r34 lt 52814 600

Early Monday morning I was back in the 2014 Acura MDX for the slog down Interstate 5 South from Eugene, Oregon to Santa Monica, California. I was sad to leave Oregon.

I’;m not confident why I didn’;t feel to do this before, but when the driver’;s window created the occasional whistling sound as it had on the trip up, I pushed out on the window, just to see how it would impact items. Doing so eliminated the noise. Clearly this is something that could be fixed.

Total miles for the trip: 2,047.

Average fuel mileage: 24.8 mpg, with a very best tank of 27.4 and a worst of 23.7

For comparison, the EPA’;s numbers for the MDX are 21 mpg Combined (18 City/27 Highway).

Oh, and don’;t listen to Mike Magrath if he tries to inform you I stunk up the MDX. He’;s a weirdo. The Acura already had a slightly odd odor prior to I got in. But in truth, 4 days with my mountain bike (and its odd-smelling chain lube) lying in the back possibly did not aid anything.

Overall, the road trip was a accomplishment. I located trees. I identified trails. The 2014 Acura MDX was a worthy and comfy companion by means of it all, with space and energy aplenty.
