Having established that this year’s New York auto show lacked a coherent, overarching theme, we did actually discover one sub-theme running strong throughout: Attention to sweet details in design. Specifically, the collection of debuts had a veritable treasure trove of features and widgets that left us staggered. The devil—or at lease a threadbare connection—is always in the details, they say, and these are some fun things eggs we saw in New York.
1) Lincoln Continental concept: Absolutely ridiculous 30-way seats
The Lincoln Continental concept’;s derivative look may have irked some folks, but everyone could appreciate the car’;s outrageous interior. Our favorite feature? The epic 30-way power seats, which have an equally impressive 50 engineering patents associated with them. That the seats look like robotic centipedes reaching out to give you an awkward hug, well, that’;s pure gravy.

For seats with 30 possible adjustments, the controls appear fairly straightforward.

2) 2016 Range Rover SVAutobiography: Electrically deployable tables
Nothing says “business class” like tiny tables that deploy from next to your ultra-luxury SUV’;s comfy, reclined rear perch. The 2016 Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography’;s trays kick things up a notch extra by deploying under their own power at the press of a button. Pass the bubbly, Jeeves.
Why are we celebrating a manually folding roof on an $ 80,000-plus sports car? Because the previous-generation Porsche Boxster Spyder’;s lightweight design ethos and gorgeous rear-deck fairings dictated the use of a convertible top of such diabolical complexity as to make a Swiss watch blush. While your timepiece wept with embarrassment, you probably were getting wet during the 5-to-10-minute process of erecting the old Spyder’s tent-like cloth roof. The new Boxster Spyder’s top, which folds beneath a tonneau cover, is far simpler. Of course, Porsche didn’t remove all of the complexity—raising or lowering the top still requires a number of steps—but we dig how it improved the roof while still keeping it relatively basic and light-w7

4) Honda Civic coupe concept: Properly done wrap-around taillights
Today’;s Civic looks a bit like like a sad tadpole with headlights. The 2016 Civic Coupe concept, on the other hand, looks like a real car that we’;re actually attracted to. Our favorite feature? The Civic concept’;s highly sculpted, wraparound taillights that look like nothing else on the road. This is the sort of wow factor the production Civic desperately needs to regain the interest of buyers—and us.
These days, it’;s rare to open a car hood and find . . . an engine. Sure, the lion’;s share of new cars sold the globe over are powered by internal-combustion engines, but few are visible to the naked eye. Manufacturers, whether to quell noisy direct fuel-injection system noises or simply to prevent their hapless customers from becoming overwhelmed when trying to top off their windshield-wiper fluid reserves, have begun slathering engines with plastic and felt covers. That’s why we were so happy when we happened across the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club’s gloriously naked engine bay. Is that a . . . a valve cover we see? Ignition coils? An exhaust manifold? Fun fact: Even the regular 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s engine bay looks like this. Long live the naked engine!

6) 2016 Nissan Maxima: 4DSC taillight branding
The original Nissan Maxima had tiny “4DSC” lettering molded into its exterior lights, and so, too, does the all-new 2016 version. For the uninitiated, “4DSC” stands for “4-Door Sports Car,” a boast Nissan has long made about the Maxima sedan. It remains to be seen whether the new car will live up to the title, though.
Cadillac’;s CT6 luxury sedan is understated, handsome, and long overdue. That said, one of our favorite features—besides the CT6′s epic-sounding (no pun intended) 34-speaker Bose audio system—is its fancy digital rearview mirror. At the flip of a switch, the rearview mirror transforms from a reflective surface showing what’s behind you to a screen showing—wait for it—what’s behind you. The cool part is how it shows your aft surroundings: Thanks to a wide-angle video feed, all you see is what’s behind the car, no rear pillars, no headrests, no back-seat passengers.

Mercedes-AMG this week reprised its slightly strange tradition of showing off customized land-primarily based automobiles at the Miami International Boat Show, parking a garishly black-and-yellow GT S sport coupe in front of a matching Cigarette speedboat. No, you can not tow the boat with the Benz. Quit asking.
In the wake (hah! That’s a boating joke, kid) of final year’s Benz-and-matching-boat duo, and 2013’s nuclear-glow-in-the-dark combo, Mercedes asked Cigarette Racing to generate the most outrageously apt sea-faring pairing to go with the twin-turbo, 503-hp sportster. And this boat ain’t blowing smoke.
The dinghy-half of the duo is the Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder GT S Notion, billed as the world’s most effective production twin-engine overall performance boat, and hoo-boy does it earn it: Aft of the 5-seat passenger compartment, the engine room homes twin Mercury Racing V-8 engines kicking out 1550 horses every.
And it’s not like these sixteen pistons have to contend with a lot of dead weight: Cigarette says it sliced almost 1000 lbs from the boat’s dry weight, giving the 50-foot torpedo a claimed leading speed of more than 135 mph.
The bodacious boat’s specs make the Mercedes-AMG GT S’s achievements seem like a drop in the bucket: The coupe only has one engine, for Pete’s sake, although it does hurdle to a terminal velocity of 193 mph. It also comes in at a rather reasonable $ 130,000—reasonable, at least, compared to the $ 1.2 million value tag for the one-off Cigarette.
As for towing the 13,200-pound boat? For that you’re gonna need to have a truck.
Regional Motors is joining the Detroit maker movement: The firm 3D-printed an electric automobile at the North American International Auto Show, the 3-part printing procedure ushering in the company’s midcycle refresh of its Strati. The automobile was first unveiled at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in September.
Regional Motors expects to ultimately produce 30 Stratis and provide them in late 2015 at rates anticipated to fall in between $ 18,000 and $ 30,000, according to a spokesperson.
We previously reported that the Strati uses a Renault Twizy EV powertrain, however that will modify in the coming months as the Twizy bits are being phased out. “We have to solidify the powertrain,” said Neighborhood Motors COO Lee Herge. “We don’t intend to make [powertrains]. We’re creating a couple of platforms and speaking to everyone.” The Strati is produced of 80 percent ABS plastic and 20 % minced carbon fiber and weighs a claimed 1500 pounds.
The quick turnaround on its surface updates is made to demonstrate how swiftly the firm is capable of shifting its plastic production approach. “It’s to show its adaptability,” Herge stated. He stated the refreshed Strati attributes a reworked front end, headlights, taillights and fenders. When we had the opportunity to visit with Local Motors, the Detroit instance wasn’t very finished verify out the renderings under to see how it ultimately differs from the first-gen vehicle pictured up top. The new Strati was only in phase 2 of the 3-element production process at the time, possessing been delayed simply because the routing triggered disruptive noise for the duration of auto-show organization hours. The organization showed the very first-generation Strati at its booth and presented rides on the test track (more on that soon).
“We like to think of it as a Create-a-Bear mashed up with IKEA mashed up with Formula 1,” said Nearby Motors co-founder and CEO John B. Rogers, Jr. at the company’s Monday afternoon press conference. Rogers also announced the company’s plans to expand its crowdsourced operation. This year, it will open 2 new micro factories in Knoxville, Tennessee, and one particular at National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C., exactly where the initial 3D-printed vehicles will be spit out, assembled, and sold. The organization also plans to open up the style approach via a contest in which 12 builders will have printed goods for show at the 2015 SEMA show.

Hiroshi Shimizu, Takata’s senior vice president of global good quality assurance, testifies ahead of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on December 3.
With Takata denying a federal request to recall more of its driver’s-side airbags, Honda has agreed to do so by expanding its regional recalls and calling all automakers to help a third-party audit that would speed up components testing and properly determine the shrapnel-shooting airbags.
As of last Wednesday, the National Highway Visitors Safety Administration had provided Takata until midnight last evening to expand the recall and had pressured half of the 10 impacted automakers to do the same. While NHTSA maintains that passenger-side airbags do not pose a coast-to-coast problem, Takata senior vice president Hiroshi Shimizu rebuffed NHTSA’s claims that a number of million driver’s-side airbags now demonstrate a national safety danger.
“Based on the information we are collecting from the region, the data nonetheless help that we must remain focused on the region with higher humidity,” Shimizu stated in a hearing today to the Residence Committee on Energy and Commerce.
To date, Takata has tested roughly 4000 inflators recovered from automobiles in “high humidity” regions of the south and Gulf Coast and said that all of the approximately 400 driver’s-side inflators had performed as designed. But of the remaining 3600 passenger-side inflators, Shimizu said that “less than 60″ had ruptured—which, at 1.67 % of the sample, is a quite higher failure price in manufacturing. NHTSA had sent a recall request to Takata final month soon after a driver of a 2007 Ford Mustang outdoors of the regional recall was injured by a 2-inch metal shard. In the U.S., 4 folks have died from the defective Takata inflators—all of them in Honda vehicles—and at least 139 injuries have been reported across all automakers.
“The proof is the dilemma isn’t limited to areas of absolute, higher humidity,” NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman stated at the hearing. Friedman mentioned he would pursue fines, which can run up to $ 7000 per day, if Takata does not comply with an expanded recall.
So far, only Toyota has seconded Honda’s request for outdoors testing but did not expand any of its recalls. Takata stated it would type an independent panel to scrutinize top quality checks, recommend greatest practices at its facilities, and publish the final results at a later date. As part of NHTSA’s investigation, the company has till December 5 to supply the agency with particulars on its manufacturing processes and to reveal employee names who worked on the production line when the faulty airbags had been manufactured. All 10 automakers have also been ordered to submit test benefits from the regional recalls by December 5, hence Honda’s cry for a group work. Honda is below a separate investigation by NHTSA for omitting 1729 death and injury reports for far more than a decade, a dilemma the business mentioned nowadays was due to poor employee oversight, and for not specifically mentioning airbag-related deaths and injuries in previous recalls.
In August, a 2007 Ford Mustang driver was injured by this 2-inch metal fragment from a faulty Takata airbag.
Despite months of testing—plus years of related investigations by Takata and Honda that stretch back to 2004—neither Takata nor the automakers have a definitive answer as to why the airbags are exploding shrapnel. Shimizu said Takata is testing about 25 inflators per day and is currently on track to ship out 350,000 replacements per month and will ramp up to 450,000 by January. If each automaker issues national airbag recalls, Takata has agreed to contract with suppliers Autoliv and Daicel to feed the demand.
Although numerous of Takata’s current airbag inflators use the synthetic compound Tetrazole, Shimizu mentioned there was nothing unsafe about the ammonium nitrate utilized in the faulty inflators, only that “manufacturing processes and humidity control in the plant” had caused the problem. When Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) revealed comments from Takata engineers in 1999 who raised doubts about ammonium nitrate, which includes that it “predisposes this propellant to break apart” and that it could “blow up,” Shimizu said he did not remember seeing them. Final month, a Takata official stated the replacement airbag inflators had a revised chemical compound but have been still primarily based on ammonium nitrate. Shimizu mentioned the replacements have the exact same propellant as just before.
“I’m quite confident that merchandise on the current production line should operate as made and are secure,” Shimizu said.
With regard to allegations that business workers destroyed information after discovering faulty airbags in 2004, Shimizu denied there was “any secret test” and stated the company did conduct tests at that time related to a separate difficulty in which airbag cushions have been tearing on BMW models.
