Mazda announces Recall Campaign on certain Mazda6 vehicles for airbags issue

Mazda outlined a concern affecting some Mazda6 vehicles equipped with a passenger-side air bag. The supplier of air bags, Takata Corporation, notified Mazda Southern Africa that the subject coverage of the recall campaign affects Mazda6 vehicles produced from April 2002 through June 2003 with model VIN code (GG). This concern had deemed a recall campaign necessary.

The recall is due to an inappropriate production condition and storage of the propellant in the inflator. The density of the propellant may be insufficient on the inflator for the passenger seat airbag. This might cause the propellant to ignite abnormally at the time of airbag deployment and potentially result in extremely high inner pressure of the inflator causing a rupture of the inflator case.  In a case of a rupture, the airbag might not deploy as designed and may lead to passenger injury.

There have been no recorded incidences on Mazda vehicles globally; however, there have been 3 recorded incidences on other brand vehicles. Since there is a potential that the same defect may occur on some Mazda vehicles, Mazda Southern Africa will conduct a repair procedure to replace the passenger-side air bag inflator with an improved unit on the possibly affected vehicles.

Mazda SA urges all owners with possibly affected Mazda6 vehicles to contact the Mazda SA Dealer Ne2rk or the Mazda SA Customer Care Centre on 0860 069 700 or email customercare@mazda.co.za.

Recall: Leaky Hyundai Genesis Taillights May Confuse Transmission Electronics

ac191 2015 Hyundai Genesis 104 626x382

Looking for proof of just how complex and inscrutable modern day vehicle electronics are? Here’s some fodder for your grumpy Luddite tendencies: Hyundai has had to recall practically 25,000 Genesis sedans for leaky taillights that can cause the transmission to show the wrong gear on the instrument panel or delay the engagement of reverse or drive.

In a recall announced in February, Hyundai will yank back 24,400 model-year 2015 Genesis sedans built amongst February of 2014 and January of 2015 for the potentially leaky taillights. According to NHTSA, water can leak into the rear mixture lamp assembly.

That errant moisture can apparently throw the Hyundai’s drivetrain into a spiral of confusion. NHTSA says the malfunction can “cause an incorrect gear show on the instrument panel” or even delay gear engagement when shifting out of park. We assume this has some thing to do with the possible malfunction of the reverse lights in the “rear combination lamp assemblies,” but the NHTSA document doesn’t go into certain detail.

It appears like a bit of a head-scratcher, but the danger is true, as NHTSA warns that “if the incorrect gear is being displayed, the automobile could move in an unintended path,” which is never ever very good. Hyundai will rectify the predicament by installing pads to prevent water entry into the rear lights. At the time of writing, Hyundai has not outlined a notification schedule for owners, but if you have a 2015 Genesis and you want to make certain “D” genuinely indicates the car’s in drive, you can contact Hyundai at 1-855-671-3059 and reference Hyundai Recall 128.

Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota Recall 2.13 Million Automobiles for Airbags that Deploy with no Warning

b386f 2003 Jeep Liberty

Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota are recalling a lot more than 2 million vehicles to fix airbags that can all of a sudden deploy without having warning, according to filings posted this morning by the National Highway Targeted traffic Safety Administration. This is the second round of recalls for the very same dilemma stemming from late 2012.

These recalls (which are not connected to the Takata airbag inflators that can explode shrapnel) have been prompted by a NHTSA investigation from Could that looked at a earlier 2012 recall of Jeep SUVs. In that instance, front and side-curtain airbags manufactured by supplier TRW were inadvertently deploying due to electrical faults in the airbag circuitry. Chrysler’s initial submissions cited 215 reports of faulty deployments and 81 injuries from the airbags, and by May possibly of last year, it had informed NHTSA of an extra 6 deployments that occurred on autos previously repaired with a new wiring harness incorporating an electrical noise filter.

So far through October, Chrysler has reported a further 18 accidental deployments on repaired vehicles—a total of 18 Libertys and 6 Grand Cherokees—where the noise-filter remedy clearly failed. Chrysler admits it nonetheless can not figure out what’s causing the “electrical overstress” and so it’s now replacing the complete airbag manage module rather of installing new wiring.

A total of 753,176 Chrysler models, including the 2002–2003 Jeep Liberty, 2002–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2003–2004 Dodge Viper, are incorporated in the U.S. Chrysler mentioned it wasn’t aware of any airbag deployments in Vipers, and whilst there have been at least 81 injuries, there have been no associated crashes.

e7e42 2003 Honda Odyssey 626x412

Likewise, Honda is recalling 374,177 cars—specifically, the 2003–2004 Honda Odyssey and 2003 Acura MDX—after studying of an accidental deployment on a 2003 Odyssey in April. So far, Honda has reported 8 accidental deployments and no injuries involving automobiles that had received the original wiring repair.

The recall also spreads to incorporate 1,006,849 2003–2004 Toyota Avalon, Corolla, and Matrix models (as properly as the Toyota-constructed Matrix twin, the Pontiac Vibe). Nevertheless, in contrast to Chrysler and Honda, Toyota had already begun replacing airbag modules in addition to installing noise filters in the course of its initial January 2013 and later March 2014 recall campaigns. Still, simply because dealers only replaced modules that threw a faulty code, several a lot more potentially bad modules are nonetheless across the million-plus automobiles just recalled.

Airbag supplier TRW will not have any new handle modules ready “until the latter element of 2015,” according to NHTSA. In the meantime, Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota owners will be notified to have the noise filter installed, if they haven’t already, as an interim repair. All the cars are supposedly safe to drive, even though some Jeep owners have witnessed airbags and even the seatbelt pre-tensioners getting triggered at times prior to even a warning light seems. If you’d like to know if your automobile is among these affected, you can use NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool to search the database.

Honda Expands Airbag Recall Nationwide, Takata Tests Show Higher Defect Rates

22c33 NHTSA Hearing Hiroshi Shimizu Takata Dec 3 2014 626x405
Hiroshi Shimizu, Takata’s senior vice president of global good quality assurance, testifies ahead of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on December 3.

With Takata denying a federal request to recall more of its driver’s-side airbags, Honda has agreed to do so by expanding its regional recalls and calling all automakers to help a third-party audit that would speed up components testing and properly determine the shrapnel-shooting airbags.

As of last Wednesday, the National Highway Visitors Safety Administration had provided Takata until midnight last evening to expand the recall and had pressured half of the 10 impacted automakers to do the same. While NHTSA maintains that passenger-side airbags do not pose a coast-to-coast problem, Takata senior vice president Hiroshi Shimizu rebuffed NHTSA’s claims that a number of million driver’s-side airbags now demonstrate a national safety danger.

“Based on the information we are collecting from the region, the data nonetheless help that we must remain focused on the region with higher humidity,” Shimizu stated in a hearing today to the Residence Committee on Energy and Commerce.

To date, Takata has tested roughly 4000 inflators recovered from automobiles in “high humidity” regions of the south and Gulf Coast and said that all of the approximately 400 driver’s-side inflators had performed as designed. But of the remaining 3600 passenger-side inflators, Shimizu said that “less than 60″ had ruptured—which, at 1.67 % of the sample, is a quite higher failure price in manufacturing. NHTSA had sent a recall request to Takata final month soon after a driver of a 2007 Ford Mustang outdoors of the regional recall was injured by a 2-inch metal shard. In the U.S., 4 folks have died from the defective Takata inflators—all of them in Honda vehicles—and at least 139 injuries have been reported across all automakers.

“The proof is the dilemma isn’t limited to areas of absolute, higher humidity,” NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman stated at the hearing. Friedman mentioned he would pursue fines, which can run up to $ 7000 per day, if Takata does not comply with an expanded recall.

So far, only Toyota has seconded Honda’s request for outdoors testing but did not expand any of its recalls. Takata stated it would type an independent panel to scrutinize top quality checks, recommend greatest practices at its facilities, and publish the final results at a later date. As part of NHTSA’s investigation, the company has till December 5 to supply the agency with particulars on its manufacturing processes and to reveal employee names who worked on the production line when the faulty airbags had been manufactured. All 10 automakers have also been ordered to submit test benefits from the regional recalls by December 5, hence Honda’s cry for a group work. Honda is below a separate investigation by NHTSA for omitting 1729 death and injury reports for far more than a decade, a dilemma the business mentioned nowadays was due to poor employee oversight, and for not specifically mentioning airbag-related deaths and injuries in previous recalls.

10741 Takata shard 2007 Mustang airbag rupture 626x352 In August, a 2007 Ford Mustang driver was injured by this 2-inch metal fragment from a faulty Takata airbag.

Despite months of testing—plus years of related investigations by Takata and Honda that stretch back to 2004—neither Takata nor the automakers have a definitive answer as to why the airbags are exploding shrapnel. Shimizu said Takata is testing about 25 inflators per day and is currently on track to ship out 350,000 replacements per month and will ramp up to 450,000 by January. If each automaker issues national airbag recalls, Takata has agreed to contract with suppliers Autoliv and Daicel to feed the demand.

Although numerous of Takata’s current airbag inflators use the synthetic compound Tetrazole, Shimizu mentioned there was nothing unsafe about the ammonium nitrate utilized in the faulty inflators, only that “manufacturing processes and humidity control in the plant” had caused the problem. When Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) revealed comments from Takata engineers in 1999 who raised doubts about ammonium nitrate, which includes that it “predisposes this propellant to break apart” and that it could “blow up,” Shimizu said he did not remember seeing them. Final month, a Takata official stated the replacement airbag inflators had a revised chemical compound but have been still primarily based on ammonium nitrate. Shimizu mentioned the replacements have the exact same propellant as just before.

“I’m quite confident that merchandise on the current production line should operate as made and are secure,” Shimizu said.

With regard to allegations that business workers destroyed information after discovering faulty airbags in 2004, Shimizu denied there was “any secret test” and stated the company did conduct tests at that time related to a separate difficulty in which airbag cushions have been tearing on BMW models.

Enormous Takata Airbag Recall: Every thing You Want to Know, Including Complete List of Affected Vehicles

19b10 Deployed airbags 626x417

The automotive planet and beyond is buzzing about the huge airbag recall covering numerous millions of vehicles in the U.S. from practically 2 dozen brands. Here’s what you need to know about the problem which automobiles could have the defective, shrapnel-shooting inflator parts from Japanese supplier Takata and what to do if your vehicle is 1 of them.

* SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR Full LIST OF Affected Automobiles *

The situation requires defective inflator and propellent devices that might deploy improperly in the occasion of a crash, shooting metal fragments into vehicle occupants. A lot more than 7 million cars are potentially impacted in the United States.

Initially, only 6 makes were involved when Takata announced the fault in April 2013, but a Toyota recall in June this year—along with new admissions from Takata that it had little clue as to which automobiles employed its defective inflators, or even what the root trigger was—prompted more automakers to problem identical recalls. In July, NHTSA forced added regional recalls in high-humidity regions including Florida, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to collect removed parts and send them to Takata for review.

Another main recall issued on October 20 expanded the impacted vehicles across many brands. For its component, Toyota mentioned it would begin to replace defective passenger-side inflators starting October 25 if parts are unavailable, nevertheless, it has advised its dealers to disable the airbags and affix “Do Not Sit Here” messages to the dashboard.

Whilst Toyota says there have been no related injuries or deaths involving its autos, a New York Times report in September found a total of at least 139 reported injuries across all automakers. In specific, there have been at least 2 deaths and 30 injuries in Honda cars. According to the Occasions, Honda and Takata allegedly have recognized about the faulty inflators given that 2004 but failed to notify NHTSA in prior recall filings (which started in 2008) that the impacted airbags had really ruptured or were linked to injuries and deaths.

Takata initial mentioned that propellant chemical substances had been mishandled and improperly stored for the duration of assembly, which supposedly caused the metal airbag inflators to burst open due to excessive stress inside. In July, the organization blamed humid weather and spurred additional recalls.

According to documents reviewed by Reuters, Takata says that rust, negative welds, and even chewing gum dropped into at least a single inflator are also at fault. The identical documents show that in 2002, Takata’s plant in Mexico allowed a defect price that was “6 to 8 occasions above” acceptable limits, or roughly 60 to 80 defective parts for each 1 million airbag inflators shipped. The company’s study has however to attain a final conclusion and report the findings to NHTSA.

UPDATE 11/7: The New York Instances has published a report suggesting that Takata knew about the airbag problems in 2004, conducting secret tests off work hours to verify the difficulty. The results confirmed main problems with the inflators, and engineers quickly began researching a answer. But instead of notifying federal security regulators and moving forward with fixes, Takata executives ordered its engineers to destroy the information and dispose of the physical proof. This occurred a full 4 years ahead of Takata publicly acknowledged the issue. Needless to say, the supplier has a lot of explaining to do.

The negative news? GM is about to problem 2 much more recalls. The worse news? Each actions cover one of our favored cars, the C7 Chevrolet Corvette.

According to GM, a quit-sale notice has been sent to Chevrolet dealers who might have in stock some of the 2800 Corvettes potentially affected by 2 troubles. The initial issue afflicts roughly 2000 automobiles, which may have a driver’s side airbag that could come unseated when deployed in a crash, escalating the danger of injury.

“In an work to deal with quality issues swiftly and entirely, Basic Motors has told Chevrolet dealers to quit delivery of approximately 2000 2015 Corvettes to fix the driver’s airbag,” GM spokesman James Cain told us when we reached out for comment. “GM also has temporarily stopped shipment of the vehicles from the plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The vehicles are becoming inspected for a suspect portion that attaches the air bag to the steering wheel.”

The second recall is for a parking brake that could not have been installed effectively. Cain: ”Another 800 Corvettes—most of them at dealerships—are on hold because they could have been built with only a single of the rear parking brake cables fully seated and engaged. The portion must be inspected to [make sure] the parking brake is operating on each rear wheels.”

If there’s any silver lining it is that the recalls don’t affect all C7 Corvettes, and it seems that couple of of the recalled units have actually made it into customers’ hands. In addition, not all of the cars will call for an actual repair, according to Cain if these units pass muster (after official inspection and repair procedures have been published), they can be right away released for sale.

These recalls of GM’s most high-profile auto are but 2 more cherries on best of the truly awful sundae that has been GM’s calendar-year 2014. Because January, the business has issued some 67 recalls affecting 29 million automobiles. Just this week, according to Automotive News, CEO Mary Barra maybe jinxed herself when she told reporters in India that GM is practically via issuing recalls resulting from a business-wide safety assessment. So as soon as this Corvette business is taken care of, possibly the news made by GM will henceforth involve car debuts and on-sale dates rather than new recalls and cease-sale orders. We’ll see.

Getting into a vehicle’s VIN (car identification quantity) at safercar.gov will show what recall repairs have however to be completed, with out any require to pay for a Carfax report. The VIN appear-up is also quicker and far simpler to figure out a vehicle’s recall status than it is to uncover out by browsing by year, make, and model. And even then you will not know if an person car has been fixed.

“By producing individual VIN searches readily accessible, we’re supplying an additional service to consumers—the peace of mind realizing that the automobile they personal, or that they are considering of acquiring or renting, is totally free of safety defects,” NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman said in a statement.

Automakers and motorcycle companies must update these databases weekly and give status updates for all light-duty models recalled inside the previous 15 years. They also have to provide the exact same search on their organization internet sites some automakers had currently been carrying out this properly prior to the law was announced last year.

Tiny-volume brands like Rolls-Royce are exempt, and non-recall notices such as technical service bulletins are not integrated in the search. New actions where affected VINs are nonetheless getting gathered (e.g., the massive Takata airbag recall) will want extra time before they’re included in the database. It’s worth noting that, in spite of the 15-year timeline, automobiles older than 10 years from the date of any initial recall are not eligible for free repairs. Given how numerous folks ignore recall notices in the mail, we applaud NHTSA for generating vital data less difficult to receive.
