August brings biggest buying/selling opportunity at Sandton Motor Show

The Sandton Motor Show, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 29-30 August 2015, will offer consumers the biggest opportunity they have this year to admire, select and buy a car, 4×4 or bakkie on the floor.

Organised by Future Group, which also manages TruckX, the largest truck show in South Africa, the Sandton Motor Show offers dealers, manufacturers and consumers the best possible place to do business at South Africa’s biggest car show and sale.

“Budgets are tight, competition is stiff, choices are abundant and consumers are pressed for time. As a result, there is a demand for a faster, more efficient means of shopping for a car,” explains Nina Harms, project manager of the show.

“According to results of the 2015 People’s Wheels survey, almost 9 out of 10 respondents (88%) say convenience is a major influencing factor in their purchasing decisions, which is where the Sandton Motor Show comes in.”

Instant deals

“By putting together all the marques under one roof, consumers can compare makes, models and deals – because all the exhibitors must have a show special that is enticing enough to do business then and there. Buyers will also be able to negotiate finance and insurance packages on the floor and have their intended trade-in vehicles evaluated on the spot.”

According to Richard Lendrum, MD of the Future Group, a Times Media company, “With never-to-be-repeated deals, a selection of vehicles stretching across all price points and even an auction of luxury vehicles, city runabouts and classics on the cards, the 2-day Sandton Motor Show offers a one-stop purchasing solution right in the heart of South Africa’s economic hub.”

Entrance is R100 per person. For further information on how to attend or participate, either as a corporate partner or exhibitor, please contact nina@thefuture.co.za.

Rolls-Royce “All-Terrain Motor Car” Prototype Looks Amazing—and Best

f9f26 2018 Rolls Royce Project Cullinan 01 626x382

Reading Rolls-Royce press releases is best done in an old-timey, 1920s-era newsreel voice. And so it goes with the most current update on the upcoming Rolls SUV—a.k.a., “high-sided, all-terrain motor car”—which the firm is referring to as Project Cullinan. Following “an undertaking to inform stakeholders of the progress of Project Cullinan,” we’re now becoming given a appear at the very first prototype for the new SUV it will be used to test the rig’s all-wheel-drive method and “on-road behaviour from suspension throw to high-bodied stability” on “all kinds of international road surface specification.”

8f28f 2018 Rolls Royce Project Cullinan 03 626x382

Let us just commence by saying that if Rolls-Royce were to freeze its SUV’s development correct right here, we’d be extremely okay with it. That is since standing in stark contrast to the prototype announcement’s Rolls-Royce presents the march . . . of war! vibe, the prototype itself is a hugely bizarre but incredible-looking modern, uh, factor.

4472b 2018 Rolls Royce Project Cullinan 02 626x382

Primarily a shortened Phantom Series II sedan, the test mule looks ready for sale: Aside from what appears to be a slightly raised ride height, it boasts a full paint job and the shortened rear doors even wear chrome trim around their daylight openings. Our favored element? The perverted yet alluring Rapidly & Furious—or would that be Quick & Really Bothered?—rear wing, which most likely is there to simulate tall-automobile aerodynamics. There’s none of the common camouflage, no uncouth cut lines, just pure class.

However, as Rolls-Royce points out—get that old-timey radio voice going in your head again—”The body may possibly hint at the size of the new auto, but it features no design aspects of the eventual higher-sided, all-terrain motor car announced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in February this year.” The prototype will be subjected to appropriately deluxe variations of pavement, Rolls says, like Belgian Pavé and cobblestones, as nicely as “corrugated concrete, noise improvement and measurement surfaces, resonance road, and acceleration bumps.” Rolls-Royce is aiming to inject its signature “effortless” ride high quality to the SUV each on- and off-road, and we look forward to assessing the Roller’s waftability when it goes on sale sometime in 2017 as a 2018 model. Now, please return to reading our “electronic magic motor car periodical” (web site) in a regular voice.

Motör Overkill: 42-Liter PT Boat Engine Stuffed Into an eight-Liter Bentley

631ab 42 liter Packard Bentley placement 626x382

Cramming a war-surplus, 12-cylinder PT boat engine into an Bentley 8 Litre chassis may not look like the most sensible program, but watching this thing shake and roar itself awake will hammer some sense back into you—with the force of pistons that occupy 3.5-liter cylinders. Allegedly owned by Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, this Packard-Bentley is identified as “Mavis,” and it’s suitably antisocial to be owned by that distinguished gentleman.

Nevertheless, it is Chris Williams who should get credit for the construction of Mavis. Whilst its constituent parts are vintage, the build isn’t as old as it appears. It was truly constructed in 2010, according to The Telegraph in a very entertaining road test (that sadly lends no credence to the Lemmy connection). The monster is supercharged, and the 24 exhaust outlets are courtesy of a dual-exhaust port design. Williams thinks it makes 1500 horsepower, but perhaps the most staggering number is in regards to fuel consumption: 4 gallons per minute at speed.

Of course, it goes like hell, but stopping and turning are yet another matter. Who cares? Just listen to it light off. What a beast.

Honda Motor Southern Africa broadening the appeal of the Mobilio

;

  • New CVT gearbox adds further convenience and efficiency

  • Space and versatility remain key attributes

  • Full 6-seater interior offers space and high comfort levels

  • Value-added pricing still ensures high degree of affordability

Only 6 months after introducing the sleek, stylish and affordable Mobilio to the South African market, Honda Motor Southern Africa is broadening the appeal of the attractive, full-featured MPV with the introduction of a third model, equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission.

Based on the Mobilio Comfort, the CVT version retains the same, spacious 6-seater interior and comprehensive features list as its manual-gearbox siblings, while adding the convenience and efficiency that Honda’;s CVT is renowned for.

The CVT can be operated like a fully automatic gearbox, which will allow the transmission to always find the optimum combination of power, response and economy. Alternatively, drivers can opt for a sequential manual mode.

The Mobilio Comfort CVT is powered by the same, zippy 1,5-litre petrol engine as the manual-gearbox versions. The advanced 4-cylinder, 16-valve power unit is fitted with Honda’;s i-VTEC intelligent variable valve timing system, and has a maximum power output of 88 kW at 6 600 r/min, linked to a torque peak of 145 Nm at 4 600 r/min.

The CVT-equipped Mobilio offers brisk dynamics, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 11,3 sec, and a maximum speed of 140 km/h. At just 6,0 litres/100 km for the combined cycle, the CVT version is also the most economical member of the Mobilio line-up.

Inside, the MPV’;s comfortable seats, generous head and legroom for all 3 rows of seats, and plenty of luggage space ensure a feeling of luxury and privacy. Despite its comparatively compact footprint, the Mobilio offers sedan-like space, but with the benefit of 3 seating rows.

The 60:40 split second seat row has a slide and recline function that allows the space to be optimised depending on preference and requirement. With a large door aperture and the second row’;s one-motion fold-down function, access to the rear seating is easy and convenient.

The third seat row is split 50:50 with a reclining function, and offers ample legroom. Both seat rows can be folded flat and tumbled forward to maximise cargo space. Even with all seats in place, the Mobilio will swallow a full 223 litres of cargo, which increases to 521 litres with the third row seat folded down.

Honda’;s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body construction means that new Mobilio provides peace-of-mind safety by managing collision forces, while active and passive safety equipment includes dual front airbags, head restraints, front inertia reel seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution.

“The CVT model adds a further string to the Mobilio’;s bow, and should add further momentum to the demand for this attractive, modern and versatile 6-seater,” says Graham Eagle, operations director at Honda Motor Southern Africa. “It brings further convenience, even greater efficiency and real ease of use to the Mobilio line-up.”

Honda Mobilio 1.5 Comfort MT            R203 900

All 3 Mobilio models are backed by Honda’;s 3-year/100 000 km warranty, as well as a one-year AA Roadside Assistance package. The Comfort models also benefit from a 2-year/30 000 km service plan.  Services are at 15 000 km intervals.

Statement by Honda Motor Southern Africa Safety Recall – Driver’s Airbag

7a07b Capture60

Further to the Takata airbag recall earlier this year, Honda will as a precautionary measure, recall a small number of potentially affected 2004 Jazz and 2012 – 2014 Brio vehicles, in order to replace the driver’;s SRS airbag module.

In certain vehicles, the driver’;s SRS airbag may deploy with excessive pressure during an accident which could result in the rupture of the airbag inflator canister. Should this happen, the possibility exists that small fragments might enter the passenger compartment potentially causing injury. Honda Motor Southern Africa has no reported injuries or incidents related to this recall.

A small number of Hondas in South Africa are potentially affected with 481 Jazz 2004 model year and 536 Brio 2012 to 2014 model year.

As a precautionary measure, owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Honda Motor Southern Africa requesting them to make an appointment with their Honda dealer for replacement of the airbag module. Recall repairs will begin within the second week of December.

Should customers have any queries regarding this recall, they may access the Honda website at www.honda.co.za, email recall@honda.co.za or contact 031 000 0473 to verify if their vehicle is affected.

2016 Ford Explorer Gets a Major Overhaul: New EcoBoost Motor, Luxe Best-Spec Trim, and A lot more

New styling, tech, and powertrain enhancements for Ford’;s extended-operating family members hauler.

The Ford Explorer fights in a crowded and extremely competitive segment, duking it out with cars like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, GMC Acadia, and Nissan Pathfinder. It is a large and hugely profitable segment, and now Ford has re-armed its Explorer with an extremely extensive midcycle update that brings considerable alterations outdoors, inside, and beneath the hood.

On the exterior, the 2016 Explorer shares only its roof, doors, and glass with the present model. New headlights consist of Ford’s 1st LED low beams as regular and optional signature eyebrow lighting, and they’re joined by a new grille opening and aggressive decrease fog lights. The taillights obtain a new 3-dimensional element, even though the rest of the rear finish gets newly integrated exhaust guidelines (with integrated soot catcher so they remain clean), reshaped D-pillars, and a more sculpted tailgate with a subtle spoiler up best.

The aesthetic tweaks group with active grille shutters to make the new Explorer 5 % a lot more slippery than the outgoing style, according to Ford. Look closely at the front fog lights, and you’ll see a functional inlet that directs air around the front wheel wells, cutting down on drag. Ford clearly focused on the specifics.

Why Didn’t Anyone Else Believe of That?

The common rearview and optional front cameras provide 180-degree views, and both come with a function Ford says has by no means prior to been on any production car: a lens washer. Anybody who’s had to thumb-smudge road salt or highway grime off of a backup camera—or tapped a parking-garage wall soon after neglecting to do so—will rejoice at this feature. It’s a wonder the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Audi haven’t thought to provide it. The Explorer can also be had with a revamped Active Park Assistant that can now semi-autonomously steer you into or out of a perpendicular parking spot (like the ones at Walmart) as properly as parallel park for you. Additionally, new side sensors help you figure out whether or not you are about to leave paint samples on that concrete column looming just behind your B-pillar in the parking garage. The Explorer also now gets Ford’s hands-free of charge, foot-sensing liftgate opener previously identified on the Escape and C-Max.

Inside, the capacitive-touch center-console controls have blessedly been scrapped in favor of sincere-to-goodness push buttons for the audio and climate controls. Audible cheers came up from the journalists at the unveil event when designer Chris Svensson announced this change, which he stated was prompted by copious client feedback slamming the touch-sensitive (or insensitive) prior design and style. Both the driver and front passenger get roomier footwells, while second-row guests get much more legroom thanks to redesigned front-row seatbacks. Front and rear “smart-charging” USB ports sense the current draw demanded by your smartphone or tablet, charging devices up to twice as quickly, whilst a 110-volt inverter offers 3-prong power at the back of the center console.

A Bigger Downsized Engine

The largest news beneath the hood is the smallest engine in the Explorer lineup: The 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder that replaces the 2.-liter turbo 4 as the middle of 3 engine selections in the Explorer. The 2.3-liter turbo 4 packs an estimated 270 horses and 300 lb-ft of torque in this application, 20 fewer horses but 45 a lot more lb-ft than the naturally aspirated base 3.5-liter V-6. It’s up 30 horses and 30 lb-ft over the outgoing 2.-liter turbo.

The added oomph implies Ford can now offer you a Class II towing package on 4-cylinder Explorers, generating them capable of lugging up to 3000 pounds, as properly as lastly offer you 4WD as an selection with the turbo 4. Ford says the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost returns the same 20 mpg city and 28 highway as the smaller sized 4-cylinder. Base, XLT, and Restricted models can be fitted with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost for a $ 995 upcharge, with the twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 and its 365 horses and 350 lb-ft of torque becoming common on Explorer Sport and Platinum models.

Valuable Metals

Platinum? That’s appropriate: Ford debuted the revamped 2016 Explorer by displaying off its new best-spec Platinum trim line. On top of the myriad 2016 upgrades across the Explorer line, the Platinum level brings luxurious appointments to compete with range-toppers like the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit and the GMC Acadia Denali. To that finish, the Platinum gets its own matte-silver grille with a different insert to make sure your neighbors know you checked the most pricey box. This model also rides on its personal 20-inch machine-completed wheels with dark accents. Satin chrome adorns the mirrors, roof rack, door handles, and physique moldings.

The cabin of the Platinum is stuffed with far more upscale supplies then previously supplied on a Blue Oval product. The upholstery puts on a lounge act, with Ford saying its “Nirvana leather” is the softest hide it is ever procured. Leather also wraps the seats, dashboard, door inserts, upper door trim, and armrests, and heated front and outboard second-row seats are regular. The ash wood and brushed aluminum trim sprinkled all through the interior are the true deal—no plastiwood or knockoff metal right here, and you can truly really feel the texture of the brushed aluminum. And do not miss the brushed-aluminum steering-wheel badge it is the initial all-silver Ford oval the company has ever used in production, and is intended to signify just how particular the Platinum is.

Additional sound deadening, a exclusive headliner to match the interior upholstery, fabric-wrapped A-pillar trim, a 500-watt Sony audio system, and an all-digital instrument cluster (an additional Ford first) round out the Platinum-level interior upgrades. The prime-of-the-line Explorer comes standard with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and all-wheel drive, as nicely as its personal suspension tune. (There are also separate tunes for the Sport and the rest of the lineup.)

In spite of the massive overhaul, Ford says the 2016 Explorer will carry more than the identical $ 31,595 base value as the 2015 model. Pricing for the XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum models will become obtainable on Ford’s site shortly, and the revamped 2016 will hit showrooms sometime subsequent summer. As for the Explorer’s highly competitive segment, we’re considering its denizens just sat up and took notice.

Clearly, Lincoln Motor Co. Demands to Fire Matthew McConaughey and Employ Jim Carrey

e48c1 Screen Shot 2014 10 27 at 12.41.59 PM 626x350

Lincoln’s Matthew McConaughey–powered commercials come across as an workout in strangeness: The star putters along in a 2015 MKC crossover, whisper-muttering bizarre musings a lot more match for Correct Detective‘s Rust Cohle than for a brand spokesman. Turns out, Lincoln may possibly have gotten the aesthetic correct, but what this idea truly necessary to resonate with the public was Jim Carrey’s take on it.Carrey’s Saturday Evening Live spoof on McConaughey’s wistful rambling is hilariously spot-on. The soft, slow drawl the strange hand gestures the crucial-sounding meaninglessness of what he’s saying—it’s all best comedy fodder. Carrey even looks the portion, nailing the slightly unkempt specialist attire that Lincoln chose, apparently to tailor its pitch to the apparent target industry of wealthy renegade philosophers.

This isn’t the very first time people have had enjoyable at McConaughey’s and Lincoln’s expense: Ellen DeGeneres gave us a attainable explanation for the Texan’s befuddling profoundness back in September. And hey, as far as Lincoln is concerned, there’s probably no such issue as undesirable press. At least it’s got people talking about Lincolns. Sorta.

Kia awarded three design prizes at 2014 Paris Motor Show

Kia Motors design team

Kia Motors was among the biggest winners at the Automotive Brand Contest 2014, an annual international design competition run by the German Design Council for automotive brands. The independent jury for the awards picked Kia as the winner in 3 categories.

The Kia design team, led by Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Designer of Kia Motors Corporation and Hyundai Motor Group, won the ‘Team of the Year’; title for its work across 3 continents. Kia Motors has design centers in Korea, California and Germany.

2 prizes were also awarded to Kia vehicles. The Kia Provo, a sporty B-segment concept car unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, was named ‘Best of Best’; in the Concepts category, while the second generation of the cult compact SUV, the Kia Soul, was distinguished as ‘Winner’; in the Exterior Volume Brand category. The award presentation took place on October 1st at the Paris Motor Show.

“Peter Schreyer and his international team have done a grand job over the past few years,” the jury stated, justifying its choice for the special ‘Team of the Year’; award. “In an apparently saturated environment of formal possibilities for the Kia brand, they have come up with a unique brand design that stands out from the crowd and gives it an unmistakable face.”

Peter Schreyer commented, “This triple triumph is a fantastic endorsement of the work done by our design team, who absolutely deserve this success. I am thrilled about the awards and proud of my team.

“First-class automobile design doesn’;t happen by accident; it’;s the product of a continuous process based on passion and attention to detail. And only by striving for a lively exchange of ideas, and by being open to influences from different areas, is it possible to be really creative. The most important aspect, however, is team spirit, which can even reduce to nothing the distances between continents. The Kia design team consists of people of roughly 20 nationalities, languages and cultures – and yet every team member brings to the job the same passionate motivation to create something unmistakably Kia.”

B-segment design stars: Kia Provo concept and new Kia Soul

The Kia Provo concept stands out with its distinctively sleek, aerodynamic, and muscular design. Developed at Kia’;s European design center in Frankfurt, Germany, the 3.88 meter-long B-segment vehicle is a car built entirely to cater to European tastes, and created to deliver a new interpretation of the DNA of sporting coupés of the past.

The Provo boasts all the advantages of cutting-edge materials and technologies, such as a smart 4-wheel drive hybrid powertrain. It combines a Turbo GDI engine producing 150 kW with an electric motor delivering an additional power surge to the rear wheels when required, and also allowing for emissions-free, electric-only motion at low speeds.

For the new Kia Soul this latest title is the third prestigious design award after the ‘IF product design award’; and the ‘red dot award’;. The exterior design of the second model generation was created at Kia’;s design center in Irvine, California.

Compared with the original Kia Soul, it is a completely new car with a new design, interior and vehicle platform – but its character and distinguishing features have been preserved: the upright, self-confident posture, broad shoulders, characteristic window graphics, the high positioning of the rear lights and its SUV-like ground clearance.

The interior, for which the development was led by the Frankfurt design team, with support from the team in Namyang, Korea, is characterized by a stylish design, high-quality materials and new premium comfort elements (such as seat ventilation in the front, electrically adjustable driver’;s seat and heated steering wheel, depending on model). The new Soul is also the first Kia with a 2-tone body color (optional).

German Design Council: a long tradition of design competence

The Automotive Brand Contest, established in 2011, has quickly developed into a highly respected design competition. It is held by the German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung), which was founded in 1953 as an initiative of the German Federal Parliament to strengthen the design competence of the German economy.

Today, this foundation counts among the world’;s leading competence centers for communication and knowledge transfer in the field of design.

The independent institution is sponsored by more than 200 companies, from both Germany and abroad. The Automotive Brand Contest is open to all companies in the automobile industry and their partners in the supply industry, and in the fields of design and brand communications. There are 10 award categories and 4 special award categories covering the entire design spectrum – from vehicle design and concepts, to brand design and multimedia ne2rking, to campaigns and events.

Third-generation Kia Sorento set for European premiere at Paris Motor Show 2014

b003f Kia Sorento motorshow

The all-new Kia Sorento will make its European premiere in Paris today, exhibiting a unique blend of style, practicality and technology, which builds on the success of the outgoing model. The new’s SUV’s smoother, swept-back profile and deeply sculpted surfaces introduce a higher level of sophistication for the third-generation model, delivering a premium look and feel, with more space and numerous innovative features.

The designers of the third generation Kia Sorento named their inspiration for the new car as ‘Stree2lf’. Although the styling changes are evolutionary, they subtly alter the character of the new Sorento, highlighting its sleek, sinuous, profile, while creating a sophisticated appearance and ensuring the new model has a bolder on-the-road presence.

The front of the new Sorento incorporates long, wrap-around headlamps and more prominent fog-lamps, as well as a larger, more upright ‘tiger-nose’ grille, with a distinctive 3-dimensional diamond pattern, first featured on the 2013 Kia Cross GT concept.

In profile, the new model retains the Sorento’s hallmark long bonnet and characteristic wide D-pillar, but a lower roofline, higher beltline and swept-back shape give the car a more dramatic, muscular stance.

The rear of the car features more prominent ‘shoulders’ and a highly sculpted registration plate surround. The latter is made possible by the introduction of new laser welding manufacturing techniques – a first for a Kia model – which renders weld lines invisible, meaning the Sorento can do without the traditional (joint-masking) garnish on the tailgate.

The sleeker look of the new Sorento is enhanced by its increased length (+95 mm to 4,780 mm)*, reduced height (down 15 mm to 1,685 mm) and extra width (+5 mm to 1,890 mm).

The exterior styling of the new car was led by Kia’s Namyang design studio in Korea, with significant input from the brand’s Frankfurt, Germany and Irvine, California design studios.

‘Modern and wide’ theme for interior styling

Inside the all-new Sorento is where some of the most significant improvements are to be found. Interior styling was led by the brand’s European design team, based in Frankfurt, and Kia’s designers have created a more sophisticated, more luxurious cabin, featuring significantly higher quality materials.

The styling of the cabin follows a ‘modern and wide’ theme, providing the interior with a stable, horizontal layout and appearance. This width is echoed in the wider instrument cluster, interior garnish and the wrap-around shape of the dashboard which extends into the door trims. A higher proportion of soft-touch materials and leather creates a modern luxury feel to the cabin and gives the new Sorento a genuine premium vehicle ambience.

One of the most distinctive interior styling features is the Swiss watch-inspired user interface, which incorporates Kia’s latest HMI (human-machine interface) technologies, surrounded by new silver-look border.

The flowing contours of the dashboard rise to incorporate the driver’s instrument binnacle, while the smoothly-styled design curve in the doors, which leads from the audio speakers up to the SUV-style grab handles, also endows the cabin with a more luxurious, sophisticated appearance.

Customers will be able to specify the interior in either single-tone (black) or 2-tone (black and stone beige) colour schemes with cloth or leather trim. Additionally, brown or light gray colour schemes in leather trim will be offered as an option.

Comfort, convenience and new technologies

Compared to the previous-generation model, the increased exterior dimensions and the extended wheelbase (+80 mm to 2,780 mm) have liberated additional space in the cabin of the new car.

Although the roofline is 15 mm lower, repositioned seat cushions ensure increased headroom for occupants in all 3 rows, who will also enjoy greater legroom. Cargo space also increases, with a longer cargo bay floor (up by 87 mm), and capacity with the third row seats folded flat up 17.5 percent, from 515 to 605 litres (VDA). The new Sorento also features a new under-floor tonneau cover storage compartment.

Available in 5- or 7-seat versions, the new Sorento features 40/20/40 second row split folding for improved versatility, with a higher folding centre armrest. The second row seats of the 7-seat version are equipped with ‘remote folding’ controlled by 2 levers in the side of the cargo bay, and also slide to allow easier entry and exit to the third row of seats.

The new Sorento debuts a number of new, advanced on-board technologies to improve convenience and further enhance the ownership experience. Depending on market, new available features will include: an Around-View Monitor, with 4 cameras helping the driver to manoeuvre when parking by displaying a birds-eye view of the vehicle on the dashboard display screen, and a Smart Power Tailgate. This system opens the tailgate automatically when the key is ‘sensed’ in close proximity to the trunk, so owners can slide their shopping bags or heavy objects straight into the vehicle.

Enhanced refinement

Throughout the development of the new Sorento, Kia engineers also focused on strengthening the bodyshell structure and improving NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) characteristics to increase refinement and create a tranquil travelling environment that is as sophisticated as the new model’s styling.

The increased torsional rigidity of the new bodyshell (up by 14 percent compared to the outgoing model) provides an excellent foundation for both enhanced refinement and improved safety.

NVH-reducing measures adopted for the new Sorento include new soundproofing material for the transmission tunnel, a 29 percent thicker dashboard soundproofing panel (increased from 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm), larger engine and transmission mounts for greater powertrain refinement and, for diesel models, a new DPF cover and an acoustic shield integrated into the engine’s timing chain cover. Cabin noise is reduced by 3-to-6 percent, depending on driving conditions.

Improved powertrains, ride and handling

To match consumers’ rising expectations, Kia engineers worked to improve every aspect of the new Sorento’s driving experience, creating upgrades for the engines, steering and suspension.

3 engines are available with the new Sorento, offering power outputs ranging from 185 to 200 ps. These include a 2.4-litre gasoline direct injection (GDI) unit, and 2 turbo-diesel engines, in 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre capacities, which are expected to account for the majority of European sales.

When developing the new Sorento, a key focus for the Kia chassis engineering team was achieving improvements in ride comfort, high-speed stability and handling response to match the leaps forward in interior quality and NVH.

The fully-independent suspension retains the format of the outgoing model (MacPherson struts at the front and Kia’s multi-link system at the rear), but features a range of modifications.

At the rear, the subframe supporting the suspension has larger bushings to better isolate it from the cabin and the larger shock absorbers are now mounted vertically behind the axle line, improving body control motion.

These changes, together with the longer wheelbase, deliver a more compliant ride, with a more progressive response to bumps in the road, making the new Sorento a very comfortable place in which to spend time on longer journeys.

At the front, an all-new electric motor-driven power steering system (R-MDPS), available as standard across Europe, is mounted directly onto the steering rack – rather than the steering column as on the outgoing model. This provides greater steering feel and quicker response, ensuring that new Sorento will be among the more agile and sporty vehicles in its segment, without sacrificing the ride quality that customers expect from a luxurious SUV.

Better passive and active safety

The structure of the new Sorento is significantly stronger, thanks in large part to the more widespread use of ultra-high tensile steel. The previous-generation model was made up of 24.4 percent ultra-high tensile steel (UHTS), while the bodyshell of the new model consists of 52.7 percent UHTS, aiding the integrity of the car’s core structure in the event of an impact and also improving torsional rigidity. The stronger steel has been used to reinforce the wheel arches, tailgate surround and rear-wheel surround.

The new Sorento also features more than twice as much ultra-strong hot-stamped steel as the outgoing model, up from 4.1 percent to 10.1 percent in the new model, greatly strengthening the A- and B-pillars.

Buyers of the new Sorento will be able to choose from a wealth of ‘active’ safety technologies – depending on market. Available systems will include: ASCC (Adaptive Smart Cruise Control); LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System), which emits an audible alert when the driver strays from the chosen lane without using indicators;; BSD (Blind-Spot Detection), with a visual warning in the door mirror when another car is in the driver’s blind spot; RCTA (Rear Cross-Traffic Alert), which warns against other cars driving behind the Sorento in car parks; and SLIF (Speed Limit Information Function), which displays the speed limit in the driver’s instrument cluster based on cameras detecting roadside signs.

The recent acquisition of a majority share in SA Show Services by Messe Frankfurt, of Germany, is seen as holding significant potential benefits for the 2015 Johannesburg International Motor Show which takes place at the Expo Centre, Nasrec, from October 14-25.

Messe Frankfurt, one of the largest trade fair organisers in the world, has offices all over the world and extensive expertise in exhibition organisation, which puts it in a strong position to assist its SA subsidiary with leveraging international involvement with next year’s show.

SA Show Services is the company appointed by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (NAAMSA) and Expo Centre to organise and manage the 2 previous Johannesburg Motor Shows, held in 2011 and 2013. Now the newly-named SA Shows Messe Frankfurt will also take over the role from Expo Centre as NAAMSA’s joint venture partner.

“NAAMSA welcomes the new international link with Messe Frankfurt and is looking forward with great anticipation to that company’s specialised input into the creation of the local motor industry’s best ever motor show,” said the president of NAAMSA and CEO of Toyota SA, Dr Johan van Zyl, addressing guests at the launch of the 2015 motor show in Johannesburg today (September 25).

Dr van Zyl also announced that WesBank will be the Platinum and lead sponsor at next year’s show after filling this position at the 2013 event.

“We welcome WesBank’s ongoing support and enthusiasm for our industry’s biennial showcase and look forward to a long and successful association between WesBank and NAAMSA,” said Dr. Van Zyl.

The president of NAAMSA went on to say that the rate of technological developments in the automotive industry was now proceeding at an unbelievable rate and that the show will be the ideal opportunity for exhibitors to display and demonstrate these new technologies and explain the benefits to consumers.

Many of the exhibitors are expected to bring prototypes to the show to give visitors a glimpse into the future.

“The management team of the 2015 motor show is investigating various interesting overseas and local innovations top provide a ‘wow’ factor for visitors, but for now we are keeping these exciting plans under wraps as we finalise the offering at one of the largest consumer shows in the country. The lifestyle aspect of motoring will also feature in exhibits and activations at the show to extend its appeal and reach,” added Dr. Van Zyl.

The 2015 Johannesburg International Motor Show will be the 4th such event held under this banner since 2008, after it succeeded the Auto Africa Motor Show which was staged 6 times from 1996 to 2006.

The Johannesburg Motor Show will again be staged under the auspices of the International Organisation of Vehicle Manufactures (OICA) as a world-ranked event on the official calendar. The only other OICA accredited show on the African continent is held in Cairo.

The Johannesburg International Motor Show is further endorsed by various industry bodies including the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) and the Retail Motor Industry organisation (RMI).

As usual this SA show will cater for all segments of the local vehicle market, being cars, light, medium, heavy and extra-heavy trucks and buses. It will also feature displays by manufacturers and suppliers of automotive components for the OE and replacement markets as well as service providers to the automotive industry.

Lifestyle double cab pick-ups will be exhibited with the passenger cars, but the other commercial vehicles will be displayed separately. Medium, heavy and extra-heavy trucks as well as buses co-located at Expo Centre as the Johannesburg Truck & Bus Show, while components and accessories will be on display in the Auto Shop.

“The Johannesburg International Motor Show is also an excellent platform for the SA motor industry to promote itself as one of the major success stories of democratic South Africa,” added the executive director of NAAMSA, Nico Vermeulen.

27791 Dr Van Zyl 199x300

Dr Van Zyl

“The industry continues to face an extremely tough and competitive business environment, both locally and internationally, requiring continuous re-examination of the prevalent business model to ensure global competiveness into the future. It plays an important role in the local economy, being responsible for some 8% of the country’s gross domestic product while contributing more than 12% of the value of South Africa’s export.

“From a manufacturing perspective the challenge is to provide products that comply with a myriad of regulations and changing requirements globally as well as the adoption of new automotive technologies.

“On a retail level the challenge remains to ensure the ongoing viability of the dealers while satisfying ever-increasing customer demands and expectations.

“The 2015 Johannesburg International Motor Show will offer local consumers and visitors from beyond our borders a unique insight into the rapidly changing automotive future. Exhibitors will grasp the opportunity to showcase new technologies, either production ready or at an advanced stage of development as well as launching many new models for sale into the Southern African market.

“Most of all the show will  provide consumers with an opportunity to compare makes and models at one place and at one time, while experiencing the excitement of our industry up close and personal,” concluded NAAMSA’s executive director.

Dark chrome is the new black for the Infiniti QX70S Black which will have its première at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

Adding a definite bad-boy spirit to the already elegant and imposing QX70, the new S-Black edition builds on the provocative, design-led ethos of the standard QX70 – the original full-size luxury crossover to embody the athletic dynamism of a sports car.

The antidote to SUV boxiness and blandness, the QX70 in new S-Black form features everything that has made the QX70 such a global hit – including its long-bonnet proportions, flowing lines and powerful stance – but with a designer twist for a bespoke new look.

Dark chrome is the key to unlocking the QX70′s dark side. It is used for the grille, foglight surrounds, side air scoops, side sills and rear numberplate surround, endowing the shapely body with a technical finish that perfectly complements the car’;s seductive character. The headlights have a new smoked finish while wheels for the S-Black are 21-inch 6-spoke alloys finished in black, to match the black roof rails and black mirrors.

In S-Black form the Infiniti QX70 is more head-turning than ever, making a striking and very singular SUV statement.

The S-Black theme continues in the cabin with black lacquer finish on the centre console and purple stitching for seats, steering, wheel, armrest and door trims. With the lavish equipment of the S-Premium model included as standard in every S-Black version, the cabin’;s luxury character is enhanced while retaining all the driver focus and intuitive control for which the Infiniti QX70 is known.

Power, response and agility characterise how the QX70S Black is to drive, its athletic bearing extending to a real athlete’;s ability on the most demanding of roads. Powerful V6 engines, in either petrol or diesel forms, advanced chassis, balanced handling, and precise steering and gear control – the latter via Infiniti’;s much imitated but never bettered magnesium paddle shifters on the steering column - guarantee every drive is a rewarding drive.

The Infiniti QX70S Black range goes on sale in selected countries in West Europe immediately following its première at the Paris Motor Show, putting Infiniti on course to set more sales records this year.  The Infiniti S-Black model will be available in South Africa from 01 October 2014.
