Honda Motor Southern Africa broadening the appeal of the Mobilio

;

  • New CVT gearbox adds further convenience and efficiency

  • Space and versatility remain key attributes

  • Full 6-seater interior offers space and high comfort levels

  • Value-added pricing still ensures high degree of affordability

Only 6 months after introducing the sleek, stylish and affordable Mobilio to the South African market, Honda Motor Southern Africa is broadening the appeal of the attractive, full-featured MPV with the introduction of a third model, equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission.

Based on the Mobilio Comfort, the CVT version retains the same, spacious 6-seater interior and comprehensive features list as its manual-gearbox siblings, while adding the convenience and efficiency that Honda’;s CVT is renowned for.

The CVT can be operated like a fully automatic gearbox, which will allow the transmission to always find the optimum combination of power, response and economy. Alternatively, drivers can opt for a sequential manual mode.

The Mobilio Comfort CVT is powered by the same, zippy 1,5-litre petrol engine as the manual-gearbox versions. The advanced 4-cylinder, 16-valve power unit is fitted with Honda’;s i-VTEC intelligent variable valve timing system, and has a maximum power output of 88 kW at 6 600 r/min, linked to a torque peak of 145 Nm at 4 600 r/min.

The CVT-equipped Mobilio offers brisk dynamics, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 11,3 sec, and a maximum speed of 140 km/h. At just 6,0 litres/100 km for the combined cycle, the CVT version is also the most economical member of the Mobilio line-up.

Inside, the MPV’;s comfortable seats, generous head and legroom for all 3 rows of seats, and plenty of luggage space ensure a feeling of luxury and privacy. Despite its comparatively compact footprint, the Mobilio offers sedan-like space, but with the benefit of 3 seating rows.

The 60:40 split second seat row has a slide and recline function that allows the space to be optimised depending on preference and requirement. With a large door aperture and the second row’;s one-motion fold-down function, access to the rear seating is easy and convenient.

The third seat row is split 50:50 with a reclining function, and offers ample legroom. Both seat rows can be folded flat and tumbled forward to maximise cargo space. Even with all seats in place, the Mobilio will swallow a full 223 litres of cargo, which increases to 521 litres with the third row seat folded down.

Honda’;s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body construction means that new Mobilio provides peace-of-mind safety by managing collision forces, while active and passive safety equipment includes dual front airbags, head restraints, front inertia reel seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution.

“The CVT model adds a further string to the Mobilio’;s bow, and should add further momentum to the demand for this attractive, modern and versatile 6-seater,” says Graham Eagle, operations director at Honda Motor Southern Africa. “It brings further convenience, even greater efficiency and real ease of use to the Mobilio line-up.”

KIA Rio arrives in South Africa

Following hot off its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the upgraded and enhanced KIA Rio has arrived in South Africa. Comprising hatch and sedan body styles, the subtle yet stylish exterior updates and notable interior upgrades have breathed new life into the Rio range, which is set to remain KIA’;s bestselling model.

An award-winning package

Launched globally in 2011, the 4th-generation KIA Rio was an immediate hit across the world. In its first year on sale, it won several prestigious “Car of the Year” awards (Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, Australia), while The Chicago Athenaeum in the USA awarded it a Good Design Award in the same year. The Rio also became one of the first winners in Germany’;s Automotive Brand Contest, scooping up yet another design award.

The trophy cabinet was enlarged for 2012, with the Rio again winning a number of “Car of the Year” and “Best Buy” awards across the globe (Russia, Portugal, Scotland, the USA, Australia). Importantly, the Rio won a red dot design award in Germany and an IDEA Design Award in the USA, while scoring first place in the China Association of Quality’;s China Quality Survey – following it up in 2013 by topping the China Automobile Customer Satisfaction Index. Needless to say, the trophy cabinet had to be remeasured in 2013. And again in 2014.

In South Africa, the Rio soon became KIA South Africa’;s bestselling model, scoring a nomination as finalist in the 2012 WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition. The Rio has also been a consistent star in the Standard Bank People’;s Wheels Award. Most recently, in 2014, it starred against one luxury German competitor and ran rings around the other to scoop the “Best Compact Commuter” award.

The Rio, with 471,000 units sold in 2014 alone, remains KIA Motors’; bestselling model globally. Upon the reveal of the updated Rio at the Paris Motor Show in 2014, Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer for KIA Motors Europe, noted that the improvements to this model are of major significance.

“The immense popularity of the Rio shows that our designers and engineers got most things ‘right’; when creating the 4th-generation of our compact B-segment challenger in 2011,” he commented. “The Rio retains the core attributes that have proved so popular with owners, while enhancements to the 2015 model include a slight visual makeover, giving it a fresh exterior and interior look.”

Minor exterior updates for a more stylish and premium appearance

Under the direction of Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer of KIA Motors Corporation, the Rio design team in Korea has updated the Rio’;s ‘tiger-nose grille’; and given the car a newly designed front bumper and fog lights.

As with the original, there are subtle differences between the front-end design of the hatch and sedan, with most notable difference being the design of the grille and bumper: the hatchback features a sportier design with lower air intakes and front fog lights, while the sedan has a more stylish and integrated design. A new rear bumper on the hatchback completes the exterior makeover.

Exterior dimensions and body styles remain unaltered, but 3 new alloy wheel designs have been added to the line-up to refresh the Rio’;s profile, most notably on the range-topping 1.4 TEC. A new paint finish – Urban Blue – has been added to the colour line-up.

New trim for a more stylish interior

Highly regarded for its stylish and roomy interior, updates to the enhanced Rio’;s interior have been limited to upgraded materials and trims. The cabin is brightened by the addition of chrome accents around the 4 dashboard air-vents, while a newly designed centre-stack around the audio system now features piano black trim for a decidedly stylish and premium look and feel. All other interior dimensions and specification levels remain unchanged.

2 body styles, 2 engines, and 3 transmissions

Both the Rio hatch and Rio sedan will still be available with a choice of 2 efficient petrol engines, mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission, 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

At the entry level is KIA’;s well-known 1.2-litre Kappa engine, which generates 65 kW at 6 000 r/min and 120 Nm of torque at 4 000 r/min, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Kia’;s advanced “Kappa” family of engines feature dual CVVT, with a cast aluminium block, offset crankshaft, maintenance-free timing chain and low-friction ‘beehive’; valve springs.  These technologies significantly improve efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 13.1 seconds and top speed is 168 km/h.

A popular and well-proven power unit in Kia’;s engine line-up, the 1.4 Gamma engine features friction-reducing modifications and dual CVVT (continuously variable valve timing) to achieve a responsive performance and competitively modest fuel consumption. With maximum output of 79 kW at 6 300 r/min and peak torque of 135 Nm at 4 200 r/min, the Rio 1.4 6-speed manual model accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 183 km/h. A 4-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.

KIA’;s class-leading 5-year/150 000km warranty remains standard, as does a 4-year/60 000km service plan. Pricing for the hatch and sedan is as follows:

Rio 1.2 Manual                          R 176 995.00

Toyota Imperial South Africa Dakar Team ready for 2015 Dakar Rally

2dce0 Dakar 2015

For motorsport enthusiasts the month of January is synonymous with only one thing: The Dakar Rally. The 2015 race promises to live up to the legend created by the 35 previous editions of what has become one of our planet’;s most iconic motorsport events. As in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the Imperial Toyota South Africa Dakar Team will be there for the start, fielding the best race Toyota Hilux yet.

“We are very pleased with the latest evolution of our proven Toyota Hilux Dakar bakkie,” says Team Principal Glyn Hall. “This is the third generation of the vehicle which came third in its first year on the Dakar. And most importantly, the drivers are just as happy with it as I am.”

The driver line-up for 2015 is unchanged from the last Dakar: Giniel de Villiers, who won the event in 2009, will again spearhead Toyota Imperial South Africa Dakar Team’;s attack. This will be De Villiers’; 12th year of participation in the rally. Beside him in the car is long-time navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz (Germany), who is himself a veteran of 14 Dakar Rallies.

Leeroy Poulter and navigator Rob Howie will again be in action in the second Toyota Imperial Hilux. The pair made their mark early in the 2014 race when they set the third-fastest time on Stage 3, finishing in 33rd position overall after the 13 stages that made up the race.

The new Toyota Imperial Hilux is issentially an evolution rather than a complete redesign. As such it has built on the strengths of the preceeding versions, though visually the 2015 vehicle may represent the biggest change yet.

b7283 Dakar 2015 2

Immediately evident is that the spare wheels have been relocated from the back of the car. One wheel now fits under the cockpit, with one each mounted on the sides behind the doors. This has shifted the significant mass (120 kg) of the wheels to an area within the axles, and also lowered the center of gravity as a result.

“You can really feel a massive difference,” says Dakar veteran Giniel de Villiers of the new layout. “The new bakkie is much faster through twisty sections, and we’;ve also worked a lot on the suspension to make it land better after jumps.”

The change in layout came largely thanks to new regulations, which allow the Toyota Imperial Hilux to be 60 kg lighter than before. In order to fully capitalise on this reduction in weight, the team decided to also maximise weight distribution for better handling and balance.

In addition to the weight saving, the regulations now also allow for a slightly larger air restrictor. This was done in an effort to level the playing field for the various different engine types that essentially compete in the same class – notably the turbo diesels that suffer less at high altitudes and in thick sand than the normally aspirated petrol engines, such as the motor used in the Toyota Imperial Hilux, do.

At the same time, the new Imperial Toyota Hilux features a fully South African-developed suspension system, a new air conditioning system and many other refinements to the original race bakkie.

All of this will be put to the test when Dakar 2015 gets under way in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 4 January 2015. Next year’;s route consists of a trans-continental loop, which visits Chile and Bolivia, before returning to Argentina for the finish back in Buenos Aires on 17 January.

The Toyota Imperial South Africa Dakar Team will not be the only team fielding South African-developed Toyota Hilux race vehicles. As in the past, the South African team will receive logistical and infrastructure support from Belgian outfit Team Overdrive on the event. Team Overdrive also support a host of other Toyota Hilux competitors, including accomplished drivers such as Lucio Alvarez (Argentina), Bernhard 10 Brinke (Netherlands) and Yazeed Alrajhi (Saudi Arabia).

The 2 South African Toyota Hilux race vehicles depart for Argentina on 15 December, and will again be transported by SAA Cargo. South African Dakar fans can follow the fortunes of the Toyota Imperial South Africa Dakar Team on Facebook at www.facebook.com/toyotasouthafrica and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/toyotasa.

Statement by Honda Motor Southern Africa Safety Recall – Driver’s Airbag

7a07b Capture60

Further to the Takata airbag recall earlier this year, Honda will as a precautionary measure, recall a small number of potentially affected 2004 Jazz and 2012 – 2014 Brio vehicles, in order to replace the driver’;s SRS airbag module.

In certain vehicles, the driver’;s SRS airbag may deploy with excessive pressure during an accident which could result in the rupture of the airbag inflator canister. Should this happen, the possibility exists that small fragments might enter the passenger compartment potentially causing injury. Honda Motor Southern Africa has no reported injuries or incidents related to this recall.

A small number of Hondas in South Africa are potentially affected with 481 Jazz 2004 model year and 536 Brio 2012 to 2014 model year.

As a precautionary measure, owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Honda Motor Southern Africa requesting them to make an appointment with their Honda dealer for replacement of the airbag module. Recall repairs will begin within the second week of December.

Should customers have any queries regarding this recall, they may access the Honda website at www.honda.co.za, email recall@honda.co.za or contact 031 000 0473 to verify if their vehicle is affected.

Bill Ford at Burj Khalifa

;

  • Bill Ford helps inaugurate Ford’;s latest business unit, Middle East and Africa, an exciting, vibrant region that represents the final frontier for growth in the auto industry

  • Ford pledged to launch 25 vehicles in region by 2016, including the all-new Mustang debuting next year

  • Industry sales in Middle East & Africa are expected to grow 40 percent to 5.5 million vehicles by 2020

Dubai, U.A.E., Nov. 19, 2014 - Ford Motor Company, underscoring its growing ambitions in the Middle East and Africa, today introduced the all-new Mustang on the Burj Khalifa, the world’;s tallest building.

Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford capped the live-action event by delivering the iconic pony badge to the 2015 yellow Mustang on the 112th floor of the skyscraper. The event was viewed live around the world on YouTube as well as by approximately 10,000 people gathered in the Dubai Downtown area, overlooking the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. (To see a replay, click on this link.)

“Today we planted the Ford flag in the Middle East & Africa, an exciting, vibrant region that represents the final frontier for growth in the auto industry,” Bill Ford said. “We also sent a message to the world that Mustang is going global after 50 years as America’;s greatest motoring icon.”

Ford established its new Middle East & Africa business unit this year, which covers the company’;s automotive business in 67 Ford markets in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa and Middle East regions. Industry sales in Middle East & Africa are expected to grow 40 percent to 5.5 million vehicles by 2020. To meet new customer demand, Ford pledged to launch 25 vehicles in region by 2016, including the all-new Mustang debuting next year.

Viewers of the light-hearted action spectacle witnessed a dramatic journey that started with a hero atop a cliff in Arizona taking an urgent call. The unknown protagonist raced via horseback, airliner, car, helicopter and jet ski to Dubai to deliver the iconic pony badge. Only in the final scene on the 112th floor of the Burj Khalifa – 399 meters (1,300 feet) above the ground — was the protagonist revealed with a wink and a nod as Bill Ford, the great-grandson of Henry Ford.

“A century ago Henry Ford had a vision to open the highways to all mankind,” said Jim Benintende, president, Ford Middle East and Africa. “Placing our regional headquarters in Dubai lets us tap the innovation and imagination that’;s flourishing here, helping us to bring our founder’;s vision to this part of the world.”

In addition the new Mustang, Ford also previously announced a plan to introduce such new vehicles as Ford Focus, Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKC in the Middle East and Africa. The company also announced the accelerated rollout of many new technologies to the region, including EcoBoost engines, SYNC in-car connectivity, inflatable rear seat belts, MyKey and other driver assist technologies.

2015 Ford Mustang

The all-new Mustang is the most advanced version yet of the iconic pony car, offering more advanced driver-assist technology than any other car in its class. The sleek new design of Mustang fastback and convertible is backed up by world-class performance from a range of available engines, including a new turbocharged EcoBoost® 2.3-liter and an upgraded 5.0-liter V8 with more than 420 horsepower. In addition to state-of-the-art connectivity systems, Mustang features available track apps, launch control and more.

Ford Mustang was revealed to the world with a television advertising campaign on the evening of April 16, 1964, before being shown to the public at the New York World’;s Fair on April 17. The car officially went on sale that day, and Ford dealers accumulated a record 22,000 sales and orders that first day on the way to more than 418,000 sales in the first year and 1 million sales in less than 2 years. Over the past 5 decades, more than 9 million Mustangs have been sold.

“Almost 50 years ago Ford captured the world’;s attention by placing a 1965 Mustang Convertible atop what was then the world’;s tallest building, the Empire State Building in New York City,” Bill Ford said. “Today’;s event in Dubai, home to the world’;s current tallest building, completes an incredible global journey for Ford and Mustang.”

A team of 6 engineers travelled with the special Mustang from Ford’;s world headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., to Dubai aboard an Emirates Airlines flight. Once the car arrived in Dubai, it was transported to the base of Burj Khalifa and carefully separated into 6 sections that could be transported to the 112th level via the building’;s elevators. The team reassembled the vehicle over approximately 12 hours.

“We’;ve taken the new Mustang to new heights of technology and refinement, so taking it literally to new heights atop the Burj Khalifa is an amazing achievement for our team,” Benintende said. “There are no cranes that would reach that high, and helicopter delivery is out of the question. Making this happen is truly an example of Ford engineering expertise at work.”

Ford partnered with several organizations to bring this event to life, including Dubai’;s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Emaar Properties.

“Dubai is a destination which offers a remarkable range of breath-taking experiences, so Ford’;s ambition for this event was a natural fit,” said His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai Tourism. “It was a privilege to work with Ford and our partners to stage the event and to demonstrate once more that Dubai is a city which continues to push the boundaries of possibility.”

Trio Crime Statistics Rock South Africa

4f7b4 hijacking
While the release of South Africa’s crime statistics for April 2013 to March 2014 by the National police commissioner caused heated debate from many political and private sector spokespeople, there is no denying the fact that South Africans have many reasons to be concerned about their safety and security.

Carjacking has shown a 12.3% increase from 9 990 incidences in the previous period to 11 221 cases this year.  Robbery with aggravating circumstances showed a 12.7% increase from 105 888 to 119 351.  The most worrying statistic however is the upward trend in trio crimes (hijacking, house and business robbery) that were pegged at 49 120 incidences this year, which is a 10.8% increase from the previous period’s 44 137.  The incidence of trio crimes has almost doubled in the last 10 years, with 25 145 cases reported in the 2004/2005 period. It equates to a staggering 134 cases of trio crimes taking place in South Africa, on a daily basis.

“The SAPS crime statistics on hijacking and trio crimes strongly correlate with our internal findings.  Incidences of hijacking have risen sharply in the last year,” says Jerry Pierce, Operations Manager at Cartrack.  “Some vehicles are stripped for spare parts, others are taken across border into neighbouring countries, while a further significant number of hijacked vehicles are simply relicensed with the aid of corrupt officials and put back on our roads.  As long as there is a demand for vehicles on the black market and as long as corrupt officials are fuelling the illegal trade in stolen vehicles, I don’t foresee the crime of hijacking decreasing significantly in our country,” he adds.

The fact that criminals are extending their crimes from driveway hijackings into the homes and businesses of their victims with armed robberies and violent assault is a frightening and increasing trend.  “Criminals are no longer satisfied with merely taking a vehicle, but are now actively targeting and assaulting their victims at home or at work, which represents an aggressive and violent invasion of a person’s personal space.  Traumatised victims grapple to reclaim a space in which they feel secure as increasingly it seems that nothing and nowhere are beyond the reach of violent criminals anymore,” explains Jerry.

Businesses are increasingly targeted with robbery at non-residential premises, a sub category of aggravated robbery, showing a 13.7% increase in the last year from 16 377 to 18 615 while truck hijackings have increased by 5.1% from 943 incidences to 991 in the last year.

763a8 Jerry Pierce Cartrack Ops Manager 8 200x300 Truck hijackings and the subsequent loss of commercial vehicles and trailers in addition to valuable cargos cost the economy and insurance industry billions each year.  “Small fleet operators are particularly hard hit.  It is not so much having to replace the vehicle and its cargo, but the reputational damage that comes with it,” explains Jerry.  “Clients will often cancel a contract with a fleet operator due to a lack of confidence, which could be a death blow to a small operator, costing them their business and the livelihood of all the staff members employed by the business,” he adds.

Hijacked vehicles that make their way across South Africa’s border into neighbouring countries are often targeted for the illegal spares trade while trucks are targeted for their loads as well as demand for commercial vehicles in neighbouring countries.  “The fact that you can wait up to 8 or 9 months for the delivery of a legitimate vehicle in neighbouring states, further exacerbates the matter.  Cartrack has even recovered vehicles as far away as Mombasa, in Kenya, which makes hijacking a crime that is affecting the entire continent,” says Jerry.

Back on local soil, corruption, a lack of transparency and the increasing moral decay of our cultural and social norms and values are not doing South Africa any favours.  “A staggering amount of vehicles are uninsured on our roads, which is fuelling the demand for stolen vehicle parts since owners cannot afford to have their cars repaired through legitimate channels.  Furthermore, the fact that officials in the traffic and licencing departments have been identified as complicit in the relicensing of stolen vehicles adds a new layer of criminality to the situation.  It not only involves the criminals committing these crimes, but the average consumer on the street that supports it,” he says.

The upcoming festive season generally heralds a marked increase in criminal activities.

The importance of having a reliable tracking company that is able to track your vehicle’s movements in real-time, cannot be emphasised enough.  “The growing sophistication in terms of the technology employed by criminals as well as the escalating violence involved with such attacks, makes active tracking, monitoring and immediate response crucial when it comes to protecting the lives of the people you love,” says Jerry.

“While vehicle theft and hijacking stats are still very high and a sobering reality of suburban life, we see the growing threat of ‘trio crimes’ of armed robbery, hijacking/theft and assault as deeply concerning and one that requires a more collaborative approach to crime prevention and apprehension of criminals,” he concludes.

Opel ADAM and Mokka confirmed for South Africa

dbba0 Opel Mokka 1024x556

General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has confirmed the imminent introduction of 2 new Opel vehicles to the South African market. The new Opel ADAM and Opel Mokka will be introduced to South Africa for sale in 2015 as part of a global product offensive by Opel which will see the German brand introduce 27 new vehicles and 17 engines in applicable markets by 2018.

“As part of the ongoing Opel brand and product resurgence in South Africa, we are excited to announce the introduction of 2 all new Opel vehicles into the South African market in 2015. The ADAM and Mokka continue the Opel brand’;s German heritage which is reflected in their exciting design, engaging driving experience and practical innovations,” says Opel Brand Manager, Christopher Cradock.

“The Opel ADAM and Mokka were shown to the South African public at last year’;s Johannesburg International Motor Show, where we experienced overwhelmingly positive reactions from consumers and the media.”

Opel, which is experiencing renewed focus globally, has seen a resurgence in South Africa with Opel vehicle sales up 54% in the first 6 months of 2014. GMSA plans to increase its Opel footprint by introducing competitive and exciting new products in key market segments.

In Europe, Opel is investing heavily in the development of advanced new powertrain technology which South African consumers will experience for the first time when the ADAM and Mokka reach South African shores.

“Engine and model derivatives for the local market will be finalised closer to the time of launch, however, we can confirm that both ADAM and Mokka will feature the latest in engine technology and innovative features from the Opel brand,” continues Cradock.

The visionary spirit of Adam Opel lives on

Opel was originally established in Rüsselsheim, Germany, by Adam Opel as a sewing machine manufacturer in 1862. Following a visit to Paris where he was struck by the speed of the bicycle, Opel was inspired by the possibilities offered to urban commuters by an industry dedicated to mobility and soon switched to manufacturing bicycles, Opel’;s first foray into mechanical transportation.

Named after the company’;s founder, the new Opel ADAM celebrates Adam Opel’;s visionary leadership and engineering prowess. The ADAM is a premium sub-compact hatchback which is set to compete with similar lifestyle vehicles in an expanding, fashionable niche segment. It features a lifestyle-focused non-retro design inspired by the latest design cues from Opel, first seen on the Monza concept car.

“The ADAM experience is all about the freedom to create and own an individual, personalised car through which the owner can express their lifestyle preferences and tastes. In addition to customisation, the ADAM offers an exciting and engaging driving experience and as with all Opel vehicles it comes packed with standard innovative technology and specification,” continues Cradock.

“The Opel ADAM will attract a new generation of customers to the Opel brand and open up an exciting world of personalised motoring for drivers looking for an individual driving experience.”

Mokka to shake up growing sub-compact SUV segment

The new Opel Mokka offers the high seating position, extra space, versatility and go-anywhere nature of an SUV, in a compact package with clever proportions. The Mokka has an aggressive design and sporty stance and is set to bring innovation and a quality motoring experience to those who live urban lifestyles.

Available for sale in the second quarter of 2015, the new Mokka range will offer a mix of exciting derivatives specifically designed to suit the varied needs of the South African compact SUV consumer and will be competitively priced while offering high levels of equipment and specification from the entry level up. The Mokka also brings an exciting and engaging driving experience, German engineering and innovative technology to the growing sub-compact SUV segment.

“Over 240 000 Mokka orders have been placed in Europe – this is not only an exceptionally important factor in the growth of the Opel brand on a global level, but also proves that Mokka is a worthy contender in a segment which is experiencing exponential growth all over the world. With Mokka we expect to see a new group of savvy consumers gravitate towards the Opel brand, who seek a fashionable sub-compact SUV which is exciting to drive and offers the solid quality and precision of a German-engineered product,” concludes Cradock.

Engines, specifications and model derivatives will be confirmed closer to the time of launch.

Toyota South Africa retained its market share leadership position with 11,347 new Toyota vehicles finding a home during July – this attributes to 19.68% of the 57,670 total units sold in South Africa. On the export front, Toyota  contributed 4,387 units which translates to 19.2% share of the total export market of 22,773 units.

From a range performance perspective, Toyota’s evergreen Hilux continues to lead the way amongst Light Commercial vehicles with 3,117 units sold; while the Corolla/Auris/Quest combo tallied up 2,134 sales in the Passenger vehicle segment. With the introduction of the all-new cross-over to the Toyota stable, the Etios Cross, Etios sales hiked up to 1,618 units.

The Extra Heavy Commercial vehicle market is still in a positive growth phase driven by Fleet replacement cycles transportation needs and the lack of alternative transportation means.

“For a second month in a row, the domestic all vehicle market showed resilience with only a modest decline of 1.5% in overall sales compared to July 2013. Major new model launches contributed also to strong sales” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa.

“Based on the last 2 month’s figures and resilience shown by the market, I believe the industry forecast of 630,000 units for the year remains feasible despite continued economic pressures, fluctuating exchange rates and interest rate hikes.”

“Consumers will continue to be wary of incurring new debt.  Negative sentiment due to strikes, economic confidence, international instability, interest rate movements and price increases are all factors influencing buying decisions.  Continued growth in the smaller passenger car segment as well as used car market shows that affordability remains key for South African customers,” he concludes.
