Chevrolet and Honda’s New IndyCar Body Kits: Better (3 Years) Late than By no means?

fe4a5 Chevrolet IndyCar Aero Kit 01 626x382

Has it really been since July of 2010 that IndyCar announced to considerably fanfare that its ICONIC (Innovative, Competitive, Open-Wheel, New, Industry-Relevant, Expense-Powerful) advisory committee selected, to no one’s surprise, a new automobile by Dallara to replace the old vehicle by Dallara?

The ICONIC committee studied proposals from Dallara, BAT, Lola, and Swift, as nicely as the DeltaWing, and chose Dallara for numerous causes, not the least of which was that the organization was going to develop the automobile and supply bodywork, but that other organizations would be in a position to also style their own bodies, hence creating what was essentially a “spec” series significantly less so.

At the announcement, ICONIC member Tony Purnell challenged firms to design and style and build IndyCar bodies: “Come on, Ford, GM, Lotus, Ferrari. Come on, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Electric. Come on you engineers functioning in your garage or in modest shops. We’ve accomplished our ideal to supply a framework for all of you to showcase your technical prowess with out a need to have for a major raid on your piggy banks. We want you guys involved, all of you.” Then everybody on stage, and all of us in the audience, rose, joined hands, and sang “Kumbaya.”

Truly, the joining hands and singing didn’t take place, but neither did the involvement from Ford, GM, Lotus, Ferrari, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or Basic Electric. There were numerous factors for that.

fe4a5 Chevrolet IndyCar Aero Kit 02 626x382

A single: economics. Aero kits, which had to get IndyCar approval ahead of use, could expense no more than $ 70,000, against $ 349,000 for a Dallara rolling chassis. Developing a new body for IndyCar would not be cheap, and “engineers working in your garage” would want a lot of luck to get approval to sell the kits. (A challenge, to say the least.) It would be a large investment and a lot of perform to have the opportunity to supply $ 70,000 bodies, of which you may possibly sell a dozen—or none.

And 2: Employing the body Dallara supplied made factors a lot simpler, and presumably the playing field a lot more even. Whether Brian Barnhart, president of competition and racing operations for the IZOD IndyCar Series, and CEO Randy Bernard even had the price range and capability to test a bunch of various bodies was a query no a single wanted to answer. Specifically given that Bernard, Barnhart, and IZOD had been quickly gone. Barnhart is back now, of course, and you can study into that something you want.

But the bottom line is this: IndyCar debuted the new Dallara vehicle at the season opener in St. Petersburg in 2012, and for the subsequent 3 years, all IndyCars looked alike—and had been alike—excepting their Chevrolet, Honda, or, briefly, Lotus engines.

fe4a5 2014 IndyCar 626x417

The 2014 car: Charlie Kimball drives the Novo Nordisk Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

That changes on March 29, at the IndyCar season opener. That’s after again in St. Petersburg, because the planned race on March 8 in Brazil was cancelled. Chevrolet will have its personal physique kit for its teams—revealed this week and pictured here—and Honda is anticipated to have its own, as well, but it will not break cover till March.

How different is Chevy’s new body? Not a lot compared to the freedom designers have in, say, Formula 1, but it is undoubtedly diverse from the Dallara physique, and Chevrolet says it is far better. (What, you expected them to say it wasn’t?) “This new aero kit gives Chevrolet drivers the capability to enter and exit corners more rapidly, even though sustaining high speeds on the straights,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet IndyCar plan manager.

Key adjustments incorporate the front wing that characteristics new pedestal-mounted “front uppers” toward the outer edges new sculpted “wheel wedges” in front of the rear tires an engine cover and side pods that have much more compact shapes, achieved through a revised turbocharger and exhaust technique layout new larger rear bumper pods and a multi-element upper rear wing that features louvered end plates.

There were many design and style studies, significantly wind-tunnel testing, and some on-track testing involving Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya at Homestead, Will Power and Simon Pagenaud at Circuit of the Americas, and Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan at Phoenix. There are 123 new parts, with expense nevertheless capped at $ 70,000 for the very first 2 kits and $ 90,000 for subsequent ones.

Fine, but here’s the elephant in the area: At tight courses like St. Petersburg, what ever Honda and Chevrolet come up with are likely to be comparable aero-smart. But on bigger ovals, it doesn’t take significantly for one particular design to trump yet another, and what if a single manufacturer shows a substantial advantage? How significantly tweaking may well IndyCar do to maintain the playing field level, one thing that Formula 1 doesn’t stoop to worry about? You have to feel that by the Indianapolis 500—or at least the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway in June 6—we’ll know just how close the 2 designs are in functionality.

Which is most likely sufficient for IndyCar to be concerned about. Can you think about what would have happened if Ford, Lotus, Ferrari, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Basic Electric, and different “engineers functioning in your garage or in little shops” took up the mantle laid down in 2010? Neither can we.

15 years of OPC – Opel sports cars for the road

;

  • Start of an era: Astra OPC with 118 kW ready for the race track

  • Turbo debut 2001: turbocharged Zafira OPC is fastest MPV in the world

  • Lap records: OPC models are developed and set the pace at the Nürburgring

  • OPC flagships today: Astra OPC with limited-slip differential and Insignia OPC with al-wheel drive

28 JANUARY 2015 – Rüsselsheim.  In the 15 years since the first Opel received an OPC badge, the abbreviation, which is short for Opel Performance Centre, has come to represent excitement and passion for fans of the German brand. For each OPC model the company has built, Opel has combined its motorsport knowledge to develop dynamic high performance cars for the road using technology transferred from the world of motorsports.

“The Opel Performance Centre provides our performance-hungry clients with vehicles that are irresistibly dynamic, have a sporty look and are very different from the regular production models, without making any comprises on everyday usability. Our OPC models stand for outstanding performance and pure passion,” explained Opel Group CEO, Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann.

Unmistakable OPC design conveys performance

“An OPC model must immediately be recognisable as such,” said Mark Adams, Opel’;s Vice President for Design. The Astra OPC, for example, is keen to display its perfectly-toned body with specially-sculpted front- and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and 2 fully-integrated exhaust tail pipes in a trapezoid shape ensuring it has the specific OPC appearance. Moreover, for the Insignia OPC the designers created an archaic sabretooth appearance for the voluminous air intakes.

All OPC models follow the requirements set out by Mark Adams: “Every detail and every line must convey the performance of the vehicle.”

A new foundation for motorsports: OPC instead of GSI

When the Astra G replaced the Astra F in 1998, the Opel bestseller increased quality, efficiency and spaciousness – but Opel motorsport legend and OPC co-founder Volker Strycek remembers a flaw. “The car was a long way away from being suitable for motorsports. As there were no plans for a GSI version, both a competitive powertrain and a corresponding chassis were missing. So we sat down – within only one year we developed and tested our debut model, the Opel Astra OPC 1,” explained Strycek.

Numerous OPC models followed and could hit normal roads, in some cases immediately after setting new lap records on the Nürburgring.

Currently, the sporting OPC flagship is the 239 kW Insignia OPC but the Astra OPC with 206 kW is hot on its heels: with its compact dimensions and a more radical overall set-up, the powerful Astra is almost as fast as its big brother.

1999: Opel Astra OPC with 118 kW leaves its mark

Based on the 100 kW 2.0-litre ECOTEC engine, the newly-created OPC team built a free-revving and responsive engine that was completely different to the frugal base model. The engine benefitted from forged pistons, sharper camshafts, larger intake and exhaust channels along with an exhaust manifold system and optimised engine management, thus resulting in 118 kW. An additional oil cooler and an adapted coolant thermostat ensured the correct operating temperature in every situation.

The chassis obviously also needed some refinement to match the increased performance of the engine, with Opel wanting the performance to be reflected in the drive characteristics and handling. The car’;s centre of gravity was lowered by 2 centimetres; Bilstein dampers, larger brake discs behind 17-inch BBS rims, newly designed wishbones and more direct steering were all incorporated. Furthermore, the original Opel Astra OPC stood out with an aerodynamics package and Recaro bucket seats. To this day, the Astra G OPC remains a very popular racing car which continues to win in the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine class.

Strycek was responsible for 2 500 ‘Sport-Astra’;, necessary for homologation and produced in series. However, the enthusiasm was much bigger. Even before hitting the market, motorsport fans went mad for the Astra OPC. As a result, the number was increased to 3 000 and these had sold out after only 4 months.

2001: Turbocharged performance plateau

The confidence of the OPC crew grew with the sporting and commercial success and the next project targeted something very special. The team set its sights on making the fastest compact MPV in the world. The debut of the Zafira OPC also saw the introduction of turbocharging. From this moment on, all further models created in the Opel Performance Centre would be equipped with efficient turbo technology.

The performance of the 2.0-litre engines gradually grew from 141 kW in the first-generation Zafira OPC to 147 kW in the second-generation Astra OPC, and then from 176 kW to the 206 kW available in the current Opel Astra OPC. Torque outputs also grew with the performance. The first generation 2.0-litre turbo engine had 250 Nm whereas the latest has a breath-taking 400 Nm.

Record hunting: At home on the Nürburgring

Through the years, OPC models have proven just how good they are on an annual basis and they regularly break the lap record on the 20.8 kilometre long Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The second-generation Astra OPC set a new class record of 8:35:94 in 2005.

The following year, the Zafira OPC set a new record for compact MPVs (8:54:38) which is still valid today. The Corsa OPC set new standards in the small car segment in 2007, when a pure serial-production car completed the course in just 8:47:99.

In addition to the record-breaking runs, all OPC vehicles undergo vigorous endurance tests through the “Green Hell”, which is classed as the most demanding racetrack in the world. The legendary Nordschleife is traditional Opel territory. The cars with the Blitz logo have been put through extreme tests there since the 1960s. Currently, Opel has a cooperation agreement with Nürburgring Ltd and furthermore established its own test centre in the direct vicinity of the course as early as 2006.

Nürburgring Edition: Nomen est Omen

To date the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker has produced 2 special “Nürburgring” editions – the Astra OPC in 2008 and the Corsa OPC in 2011. The Astra H in special racing trim had the same performance as the Astra OPC but a special, spectacular livery. In 2011, the Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition boasted an additional 13 kW for a total of 154 kW delivered by its 1.6-litre turbo engine and a limited slip differential compared to the normal Corsa OPC which made it a more radical and efficient rocket.

Compact class athlete: Current Astra OPC with impressive performance

The Astra OPC has been the top-level model in the compact class since the summer of 2012. A 2-litre turbo with 206 kW and 400 Nm of torque give it outstanding propulsion. The athletic Astra accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds flat and has a top speed of 250 km/h – faster than any previous Astra.

It was fine-tuned on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Its HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) front suspension and mechanical limited-slip differential guarantee outstanding road holding and best possible traction when accelerating out of tight corners, even in the wet. Elsewhere, OPC drivers can rely on a Brembo high performance brake system when they need to reduce speed quickly.

Insignia OPC: All-wheel drive with Touring Car genes

The Opel Insignia OPC is the flagship. Its turbocharged 2.8-litre V6 engine produces 239 kW and sends 435 Nm of torque to all 4 wheels. In order to guarantee that the power reaches the road in the best possible way, the OPC team developed an all-wheel drive system based on German Touring Car Championship experiences gathered with the Calibra (International Touring Car Championship winner in 1996).

With this powerful engine at its disposal, the Insignia OPC accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds (Sports Tourer 6.3 seconds) and achieves a maximum, electronically limited speed of 250 km/h. However, the Insignia can go even faster. The manual, unlimited version reaches speeds up to 270 km/h (Sports Tourer 265 km/h).

Toyota South Africa Motors signed off an incredibly successful 2014, cementing its dominance as market leader in South Africa for the 35th consecutive year with 127,534 Toyota products finding a home during last year. This translates to a 19.8% market share in a market that showed great resilience, albeit with a slight year on year decline, totalling annual sales of 644,523 units. This is the 4th consecutive year that Toyota improves its market share. Toyota was also the number one brand in vehicle sales every month in 2014.

The year’;s star performance came from the company’;s evergreen Hilux which continued its dominance in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) market segment, logging 37,561 units for the year; 8,829 units more than its closest competitor in the bakkie market. This makes Hilux not only the top-selling bakkie in the country, but also the top-selling vehicle overall for 2014 across all segments.

From a passenger segment perspective, Toyota has shown positive growth increasing its share in this segment to 15.5% — this is on the back of the introduction of new generation Corolla (9,893 units sold since March introduction) and the Corolla Quest (7,976 units sold since May introduction); as well as the affordable Etios which recorded exceptional sales of 17,835 units during 2014.

Other top performers in the company’;s stable include Fortuner, which leads sales in the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment with consistent monthly sales in the excess of 600 units and total sales for the year at 10,088 units. In similar vein, the company’;s smaller all-wheel drive RAV4 performed exceptionally well with 5,012 units sold during 2014; while the Quantum clearly remains a top favourite with 14,369 units sold.

Moving onto the heavy weights Toyota’;s truck brand, Hino, retained its third position overall with a total of 3,844 units sold – this follows record sales months in March (425 units sold) and August (455 units sold) and the opening of a new R55-million Hino plant in Prospecton during May. Hino’;s achieved its best December sales to date with 356 units sold over the Festive period.

Says Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa, Calvyn Hamman: “We are incredibly proud of the company’;s achievements during quite a tough 2014 – to celebrate 35 years of consecutive market leadership is indeed an amazing performance and we wish to thank our customers and dealers for their faith in our brand.

“Strong customer demand through our dealer ne2rk has led to an increase of 3.2% of Toyota sales through this channel, underlining the importance of a strong dealership footprint in the country,” says Hamman.

“We enjoyed a successful December with dealers pushing hard to achieve over 10,000 units sold and Hilux performing particularly strong, reclaiming its spot as top seller in the LCV segment with 3,343 units sold,” he says. Toyota’;s December sales represent 20,1% market share (10,372 units); while its contribution to the export market tallies up to 5,319 units (24.3%)

“While 2014 sales certainly proved the market’;s resilience, conditions were tough with 2 interest rate hikes and above average price increases on new vehicles,” says Hamman, adding that economic pressures leads to cautious and conservative consumer sentiment.

“However, we are excited about the 2015 prospects and believe the good news of a hefty fuel price reduction as early as this week bodes well for a positive new year. However, we will be watching developments around changes in company car taxation and potential interest rate increases toward the latter part of the year with interest as these factors could impact domestic sales,” he concludes.

50 years of anti drink-driving adverts

It is now half a century considering that the government began warning of the risks of drinking and driving at Christmas. We look at how the Tv ads have changed.

The festive season is a fun time – but it’;s also 1 when people are much more most likely to be tempted to risk drinking and driving.

And an evening that has been complete of high spirits can finish in a tragic accident.

Sobering pictures

That is the theme of the newest anti drink-driving advert by the Believe! road security campaign, which features Kool and the Gang’s jaunty “Celebration” against a backdrop of emergency workers dealing with the aftermath of a road crash.

The new ad was launched on the 50th anniversary of the 1st anti drink-driving public details film in 1964.

Attitudes to drink-driving have changed drastically because then and connected deaths have dropped sharply, from 1,640 in 1967 to 230 in 2012.

It’;s exciting to look back on how the films have changed over the years – and to reflect on which approached have been the most efficient.

I personally feel these adverts have created a valuable contribution to the change in public attitudes that has made drink-driving increasingly unacceptable.

1964 – The office party

This black and white advert featuring revellers at an workplace party has a plummy, Harry Enfield-style voiceover, and casual references to eye-popping levels of alcohol consumption, that make it appear virtually like a parody.

The theme is that girls should not let the guys in their lives drink and drive because, “Soon after 4 single whiskies the likelihood of an accident is twice as much, following 8 whiskies it really is 25 times as a lot.”

1970s-2004 - ‘Stupid Git’;

For the duration of the 1970s and 80s the adverts mostly featured young males with dodgy haircuts who lose their licences through drink-driving.

In the 1979 “Stupid Git” advert the guy feels that he’;s fine to drive with a few drinks inside him as lengthy as a “stupid git” doesn’;t step out in front of him.

But following obtaining breathalysed he realises that he’;s the a single who’;s not so clever.

In the 1980s’ advert yet another young man uses a telephone in the hall (yes, I bear in mind those) to get in touch with a minicab, and is outraged when he realises it’;ll take 2 hours.

Subsequent adverts take a a lot more serious tone.

Instead of the focus becoming on the inconvenience of losing a licence, it is on the terrible consequences of causing death by drink-driving.

The 1990 advert characteristics a child crying as she hears her mother berate her father for obtaining killed a small boy in a drink-driving accident.

While in the “Pub Chat Up” advert an attractive girl is shown being smashed and injured in a premonition of what may occur if a drunk man had been to driver her residence.

2007 – Moment of doubt

Typically referred to as “the barman advert” this is my personal favourite, and the a single I consider is the most effective.

It features a man approaching the bar, when suddenly the barman shifts character and starts speaking like the policeman who has pulled him over for a breathalyser test.

Then the boss who has to sack him because he’;s lost his driving licence, then his reproachful wife.

The actor snaps back into getting a barman and asks, “So, what is it going to be?”

To which the only attainable answer for drivers, is, “Um, an orange juice please.”

Bold = Best in Class

It’s believed that James Madison strode the White House and the War of 1812 was rapidly becoming the War of 1813 when an oak sapling poked through the soil in a southern Virginia meadow to witness its first sunrise and splash of rainwater. The tree’s shadow steadily grew as nearby Danville’s cotton mills and tobacco warehouses thrived on slave labor, as the vanquished Confederates retreated from advancing Yankees, and, a century later, as water cannons blasted civil rights marchers.

In 1957, a bunch of North Carolina racers cut a track around the tree, the majestic oak on the hill standing as the farthest and highest point of a long, meandering, European-style circuit. Life for the tree got a lot noisier as the cars apexed directly under its arching boughs before blatting back toward the pits and the crowds. For a while, peace returned as the track fell into disuse. But in 2000, the place revived, and some very fast machines again screamed under its leafy canopy.

A year ago last July, the old oak fell over and died. Hearts broke, and attempts were made to clone the tree with a replacement. In the meantime, nothing remains but a bare patch on a rise at the far end of Virginia International Raceway (VIR). They still call the corner “Oak Tree” and probably always will, but without the visual reference of that old friend, the turn is harder and rather less gratifying.

Alas, things change.

With our eighth Lightning Lap assembly of the current automotive elite, other things have changed as well, though not significantly. The goal remains to go flat-out in our market’s fastest new cars and set benchmark lap times on this, one of the longest road courses in North America at 4.1 miles. But this year we dispensed with any special classes, such as for cop cars. We considered airport tugs and lawn equipment, but ended up with a fairly straightforward set of 25 cars arrayed in 5 classes defined strictly by price. The bookends are the $ 25,610 Ford Fiesta ST in our LL1 class and the $ 875,175 Porsche 918 Spyder in LL5.

We also reconfigured our sectors to create better resolution, now stacking each one so that together the sectors comprise a complete lap [see Results and Sector Times]. Before, we counted sector times only as individual, noncontiguous segments with 2- to 3-second spreads from the quickest car to the slowest. The new method now has longer sectors with spreads of up to 10 seconds and allows those who wade deeply into our extensive tables (painstakingly rendered by people who don’t get enough credit but will get a pizza lunch out of it, eventually) to more easily determine where each car stands relative to another as the lap progresses.

Having been rained on repeatedly during our usual September/October dates, we scheduled this event for May. We still feared precipitation but got blessedly little over our 3 full days of hot lapping. Even though on the face of it this is a modest increase – just .4% or £3 on the standard policy – it is the initial time that quarterly automobile insurance premiums have elevated because June 2011.

Nevertheless, although rates have crept up this quarter, general comprehensive automobile insurance coverage premiums are nonetheless down year-on-year.

This time final year the typical expense of extensive cover stood at £652, compared with £582 at present – a 8.7% drop and a £70 saving for motorists.

Sanders added: “All round, it is been a mixed bag over the last quarter, with cost movements affecting consumers in various approaches.

“These movements are probably to fuel further speculation that the insurance coverage pricing cycle may possibly turn in the close to future.

“With rates shifting around either way, as they have been over the final quarter, we’;re urging consumers to shop around and evaluate prices to make certain they get the best deal.”

This is the highest boost of any region in the UK.

Meanwhile, motorists aged 66 have experienced the greatest price enhance of any age group, seeing their premiums rise by 6.1% – £19 – quarter-on-quarter.

Your car’;s worth, variety and engine size all make a difference to your insurance coverage premium. The general rule is the smaller sized the car, the reduce the premium. If you haven’;t bought a vehicle but, verify insurance quotes for the vehicles you are taking into consideration. Confused.com’;s QuickQuote app can assist.

2. Boost your voluntary excess

The excess is the very first component of a claim that is paid by you. Increasing the amount you’;ll spend in voluntary excess can reduced your premiums.

3. Check your mileage

The number of miles you drive every single year can have a massive influence on your premiums. If you are unsure of the number of miles you drive every single year, you can get an estimate by comparing the mileage on your final 2 years’; MOT certificates.

40 years of Opel Safety

5e851 Opel

  • 40 years ago: Opel Safety Vehicle masters impact speed of 65 km/h

  • Kadett C designated ‘OSV 40′: impact protection, on-board warning systems, safety seats

  • Astra today: ultra-modern assistance systems with camera, radar and sensors

02 OCTOBER 2014 - Rüsselsheim. “Don’;t start without a seatbelt”, was the slogan of a campaign launched in Germany in 1974 to persuade drivers to wear seatbelts. 2 years later, wearing seatbelts became compulsory and in 1984 fines for not wearing them were introduced. Opel has been equipping all models with seatbelts as standard since 1973 and the following year, gave a visionary outlook into the safety technology of the future.

The Opel Safety Vehicle, a close-to-production research vehicle based on the Kadett C, mastered a frontal impact of 65 km/h and paved the way for the development of further safety features. The impact speed in miles per hour (40 mph) also gave the Kadett its name: OSV 40. The current Opel Astra demonstrates the evolution since those early days. The compact car is reaping the rewards of 40 years of development and features exemplary passenger safety and ultra-modern assistance systems.

OSV 40 – Opel Safety Vehicle masters impact speed of 65 km/h

Exactly 40 years ago, the Rüsselsheim-based company showed its idea of a safe compact car at the second International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles held in London. The engineers were handed a Kadett C, presented the previous year, and could let their imagination run wild when it came to safety.

Technicians were allowed to choose the name themselves and decided on OSV or Opel Safety Vehicle. The number 40 stands for the frontal impact speed in miles per hour that the OSV 40 was designed to resist. Despite the extended safety features, the vehicle was not permitted to weigh more than 1 000 kilograms.

Impact energy absorbed by polyurethane foam

The first thing an onlooker notices is how voluminous fenders are compared to modern fenders. The OSV 40 fenders were filled with polyurethane foam which gave them their absorbing capacity. Foam-filled side members which break in a controlled fashion at impact speeds above 8 km/h were used at the front.

The foam structure absorbed enough energy that frontal impacts below this speed only resulted in a small deformation – thus the predecessor of the “self-healing” fender was created. The engineers also filled the cavities of the sills and doors with polyurethane foam in order to create increased safety reserves for a side impact.

Reinforced roof rails and backrests of the front seats that were fixed to the roof via a belt construction, increased the stability of the passenger compartment considerably – while still allowing for seat adjustment. Furthermore, the windshield made from laminated glass was glued directly to the bodywork – also with the goal of increasing body stiffness in mind.

Interior also reflects a safety approach

Inside the car, all surfaces with which the passengers could come into contact in the event of an accident were cushioned with a 2-centimetre layer of polyurethane foam. The steering was fitted with an additional angled element in the lower steering column sector.

Safety also came first in the cockpit of the OSV 40. The central warning system made by Hella controlled eleven functions and showed possible errors by the associated warning lamps lighting up. 4 additional lights behind the rear window signalled emergency braking and also doubled as hazard lights. Due to their high positioning, they were easy to see for following road users. A split rear view mirror enabled a perfect view with the lower part reducing the blind spot to a minimum.

The front seats were widened to create a continuous boundary to the rear compartment. The side supports, especially in the shoulder area, prevented the driver and passenger colliding in case of a side impact. The minimalistic head rests of the front seats ensured that the driver had a good view to the rear. The belt construction restraint system for the heads of passengers in the rear also ensured safety and overview. The 4 seats of OSV 40 all had 3-point belts – the ones in the front even had an automatic seat belt tensioning system.

All crash tests passed with flying colours

The OSV 40 met all of the objectives during the crash tests: all 4 doors could still be opened without the help of tools after a frontal impact at 65 km/h with a solid obstacle. The front section of the car absorbed the energy so well that it was shortened by 50 cm due to the cold-drawing phase. The OSV 40 was equally impressive during a frontal collision with a pylon at 50 km/h, a rear impact, a side impact with a post, and during the rollover test at 48 km/h.

Opel Astra: state-of-the-art safety systems

The newest representative of Opel in the compact hatchback segment shows just how dynamic the development in 1974 continued. In addition to the structural strength that has come to be expected, the Opel Astra offers extensive passive safety features and a string of ultra-modern driver assistance systems which increase the safety and comfort for the drivers and passengers decisively.

Available in Europe, the second generation of the Opel Eye Front Camera is the foundation for the driver assistance systems. The engineers optimised the Lane Departure Warning and the Traffic Sign Recognition functions. The camera processes numerous levels of brightness and can even recognise dynamic LED signs. A further aid available in combination with the Opel Eye Front Camera is a distance indicator. It shows the driver the distance to a vehicle in front (in seconds).

Adaptive Cruise Control maintains distance from the vehicle ahead

Even safer and more comfortable, the radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) available in Europe helps the driver to maintain the selected speed while keeping a pre-set safety distance to the vehicle ahead. In addition to speed, the desired gap to the vehicle ahead can also be selected by the driver – with 3 options available: far, medium, or close. When ACC is activated, the radar constantly checks the distance up to a range of 150 metres ahead; the selected gap to the closest vehicle in the same lane is shown in the centre screen of the display.

In case the driver does not react to the audible and visual warnings by braking in a critical situation and the system calculates a potential impact, it may decelerate the car automatically in an extreme case. The Opel Astra is decelerated with help of a brake system that can look to the advantages of a latest-generation Anti-lock Braking System and an extended Electronic Stability Program (ESP Plus).

Adaptive Forward Lighting: perfect lighting for all conditions

Also available in Europe, the latest generation of safety lighting systems, Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) with bi-xenon headlamps, includes a large package of intelligent lighting functions such as: High Beam Light Assistant, Dynamic Curve Light, Static Cornering Light and adaptive lighting, which reacts automatically to the prevailing driving situation such as route profile (freeway, highway, city) and visibility (sun, fog, rain) and adjusts the headlamps accordingly. The arrow-like design of the LED daytime running lamps, which come as standard, give the Astra a distinctive appearance.

Extensive package for passive safety

Even if all of the systems for the active safety reach their limits, Astra drivers can trust in an extensive passive safety package. A total of 6 airbags come as standard. If a situation occurs in which an airbag or a belt tensioner is activated, the hazard warning lights come on and the doors are unlocked automatically. The Astra is also fitted with the Opel-patented Pedal Release System (PRS) which decouples the pedals in the event of a frontal collision, reducing the risk of injury to feet and lower legs considerably.

30 Years New: Toyota Japan to Sell Brand-New Land Cruiser Series 70—for A single Year

d62b6 Land Cruiser PLACEMENT 626x352

Here’s the tragedy of the Land Cruiser Series 70: It was never sold in the United States. The toughest and most rugged of the whole Land Cruiser lineup is an icon in Australia and South Africa, exactly where they’ve been on sale constantly for 30 years. And for 20 of those years, you could walk into a Japanese Toyota dealer and plunk down a pile of yen for a Series 70 pickup or SUV.

35a01 Land Curiser INLINE1 626x352

Related: The 2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X is freakishly capable

Even though the Series 70 soldiered on in other markets, for 10 years, Japanese enthusiasts begged the business to bring back the stalwart truck. For the Land Cruiser’s 30th anniversary, Toyota is going to. There’s a single catch and one silver lining. The catch is that they’ll only be sold for a year in Japan, and then it is off into the sunset, once again, for the 70. The silver lining is that, at existing exchange prices and excluding taxes, they’ll be the equivalent of $ 34,650 U.S. dollars, which seems like a steal. I can’t think about an SUV this large selling for significantly less than $ 50K in the U.S., ancient and bare-bones or not.

35a01 Land Cruiser INLINE2 626x352

Related: A history of the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser

Very good news for Japan, and the very same negative news as the past 30 years for Americans. Meanwhile, in Australia, they don’t know what all the fuss is about, because the variants of the Series 70 they get make the boring quad-cab pickup and regular SUV versions in Japan look like 4WD Camrys. In Australia, they offer snorkel-equipped 70s in a single cab pickup and a troop-carrying version that seats up to 11 people. And while the Japanese 30th Anniversary Edition tends to make do with the normal corporate 4-liter 1GR-FE V-6 identified in most of the company’s trucks, the Australian models get the stump-pulling 1VD-FTV turbo-diesel V-8 with 583 lb-ft of torque.

With a structure dating back to 1984, we’ll in no way see a brand new LHD Series 70 sold right here. But keep in mind, the 25-year rule means importing RHD versions from abroad is a true possibility.

IRC Study: Lawyers Involved in Much more PIP Claims Over Current Years

What you need to know:

  • The share of PIP claimants represented by an attorney was 36% in 2012, up from 31% in 2007.

  • Claimants represented by a lawyer typically “waited longer for payment of claims” compared to those who had no representation.

  • Florida was the no-fault state with the highest rate of attorney involvement. More than half of Florida PIP claimants hired an attorney in 2012.

A new study shows that more drivers are hiring attorneys for claims they file under personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, a coverage type that was first created with the goal of reducing litigation in car insurance claims. The study, published by the Insurance Research Council (IRC), shows that more than 1 out of every 3 PIP claimants hired an attorney in 2012, which is more than double the rate in 1977.

Under PIP coverage, the policyholder’s insurer compensates him or her for medical bills related to a crash, regardless of whether or not that policyholder shared any fault in the crash. This is supposed to help reduce the number of car insurance claims that make it to court.

But the percentage of PIP claimants who hired an attorney recently increased 5 percentage points, going from 31 percent in 2007 to 36 percent in 2012.

According to the IRC, half of claims submitted under bodily injury liability involved attorneys in 2012. That was a only slight increase compared to 2007, when that figure was 49 percent.

Here is a further breakdown of the numbers provided by the IRC:

;

The IRC said that claimants represented by a lawyer typically “waited longer for payment of claims” compared to those who had no representation. Among other findings in the study, according to the IRC, auto injury claimants with lawyers were:

  • “much more likely” than claimants without lawyers to “receive treatment in a pain clinic” and receive an MRI for similar injuries

  • “more likely” to be linked to “apparent claim abuse”

  • on average, awarded lower “net payments” than lawyer-less claimants after payments are adjusted for attorneys fees and other expenses

“The attorney involvement trends shown in this study undercut 2 of the envisioned benefits of no-fault auto injury systems: a less adversarial settlement process and more timely payments,” said Elizabeth Sprinkel, IRC’s senior vice president, in a statement. “The role of attorneys is implicated in many of the factors driving up the cost of auto insurance.”

The IRC’s analysis looked at more than 35,000 auto injury claims that were closed with payment over the last 3 decades.

IRC: More than Half of Florida PIP Claims Involve Attorneys

PIP coverage is required in some states, and it’s been in those so-called “no-fault” states where controversy has brewed in recent years.

“Corrupt lawyers” are often a key ingredient to “medical mills” that criminals set up to produce bogus claims, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III), which added such operations are typically based in no-fault states “where PIP benefits are generous.” The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has also reported on PIP-based auto insurance systems and their vulnerabilities to crime.

In October 2013, authorities said they uncovered a PIP scheme in Minnesota that rang up more than $ 1 million in kickbacks. Lawmakers responded with a push for legislative reforms of the PIP system. Minnesota drivers are required to have at least $ 40,000 in PIP coverage per auto accident.

According to the IRC’s recent study, the highest rate among no-fault states of PIP claimants hiring attorneys for injury claims was in Florida, where more than half did so in 2012.

In Florida, PIP coverage is required and provides benefits of up to $ 10,000 to a driver suffering an “emergency medical condition” from an auto accident; a $ 2,500 PIP benefit is the maximum allowed in Florida for “nonemergency medical conditions.”

Florida’s 2-tiered system of PIP benefits was just one of the many points of debate between lawmakers in 2012, when they implemented major reforms of the state’s no-fault system. The push for reform was fueled by what some lawmakers said was an alarming increase in fraudulent PIP claims.
