5 Questions which show why choosing car hire cover makes good sense

5d1a3 Capture55

If you depend on your car on a daily basis, you may find yourself in a dilemma should it need to go to the panel beater for repairs after an accident. Insurance companies understand the inconvenience that comes with not having your car for a period of time and the high costs of hiring one to temporarily replace it. That is why there is an option to take cover for a hired car as a low-cost added-extra on your insurance policy – putting you into a hired car when you need it most.

If your car is written off, stolen or hijacked, it could be weeks until you are back in the driver’s seat. Having the car hire option on your policy means immediate relief of pressures and worries, equipping you to get on with life, like getting kids to school, going to work and doing the shopping.

These 5 questions will give you a clear idea of how to get car hire on your car insurance – and how it works.

  1. When can I get a hired car?

If you have taken the car hire option on your car insurance, you’ll have access to a hired car when you lodge a claim.

Your insurance company, through a car hire company, will provide you with a hired car only if your car is:

  • Damaged and is being repaired;

  • Damaged and not drivable;

  • Stolen or hijacked.

2. How long can I keep the car?

It’s important that you understand the period of time that your insurer will pay for the hired car. For example, at MiWay clients can select between 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 days when taking the cover. The hired car is available for the maximum period you have selected, or until your claim is finalised if that happens before the time selected has expired.

Remember, you may not necessarily have your car repaired by the time the rental period is over. If this is the case, you are able to hire the car for longer, but at your own expense. As a MiWay client, you are able to extend your car hire after your selected rental period at a discounted rate, provided there is no break in the car hire period.

Tip: If your car has parts that are hard to come by, it is suggested that you select car hire for a longer period, as it could take a while for the panel beater to find the right parts to your car.

;

  1. What are the terms and conditions that I should know about?

Deposit and Insurance on the hired car

The deposit may be high but it is refundable once you return the hired car in the same condition you received it in from the car hire company, less e-toll fees and fuel, if applicable. You will also have to pay for running costs as well as the collection and delivery fees, if any. In the event of a claim on a hired car, you will be liable for the excess.

;

Tip: Inspect the hired car very carefully when you pick it up. Note any damage, no matter how minor, to prevent being held liable upon returning it.

;

  1. My car broke down, can I get a hired car?

Car hire is an optional add-on cover for a specific car for which an additional premium is paid. You can only use the hired car when you have a valid claim on the car on which you took the car hire option. Mechanical and electrical failure are excluded from policy cover and are not seen as insured events, so you will not get a hired car through your insurance while your car is being attended to.

Some insurers, like MiWay, will provide you with an emergency roadside assistance benefit which will pay R500 towards a hired car if you are stranded more than 100 kilometres from your home. Be sure to check your policy schedule to see if you qualify for this MiHelp benefit.

;

  1. Can I get an automatic car?

If you prefer an automatic transmission, it can be specified when taking up the car hire cover with your insurance company. For drivers with special needs, car hire companies such as Avis have a limited amount of cars available.

Car hire cover with your car insurance can be a lifesaver, especially if you don’t have a second car in your household.

Volvo Trucks Makes a Novice Italian Valet’s 1st Day . . . Exciting [Video]

6e463 Volvo FH dual clutch

Nothing at all is real these days, from clickbait stories clogging your Facebook news feed to “reality” tv. Everything’s at least a small bit staged, and it is with that point of view we watched Volvo Trucks’ latest amusing industrial. For a division of Volvo with perhaps the least-fascinating items, the Trucks guys positive know how to score a chuckle from us vehicle guys. A current effort involved Jean-Claude Van Damme carrying out the splits, right after all.

The YouTube clip pits a rookie valet at a casino on the Italian Riviera against a parade of the hottest sports cars, the nervous-searching fellow gulping and awkwardly gaping at the model-grade ladies stepping out from the exotic rides. It all appears to be common initial-day-on-the-job fare . . . till a Volvo semi-truck pulls up to the red carpet.

We don’t ever find out how the valet manages the huge rig, but Volvo ends the clip with the boast that “under the hood, it is a sports car.” You see, the Volvo FH truck is obtainable with I-Shift Dual-Clutch, a heavy-duty dual-clutch automatic transmission. Although it hardly transforms the FH into a Porsche 911 competitor, the dual-clutch does speed up shift times and take away the chore of operating a clutch from the truck-driving expertise. And not possessing to climb the studying curve for a semi-truck manual transmission means that valet kid may possibly truly have been capable to drive the FH. Whether or not he completely decimated every thing in sight was a different story, we’re confident.

Toyota keeps it simple, makes it clever with new U2 Concept

893a4 U2 concept

Calty design studio creates a vehicle inspired by America’;s new urban DIY movement

While Toyota is preparing to dazzle visitors to the Paris Motor Show with the C-HR compact SUV concept, on the other side of the pond Toyota’;s Calty design studio in California has come up another new breed of SUV – the Urban Utility concept car or U2.

With “do-it-yourself” enjoying a big revival in American cities, where a new kind of entrepreneur is taking a can-do approach to urban regeneration, Toyota’;s Calty design studio has researched the movement by speaking to people attending the hugely popular Maker Faires across the country and has used their views to help create the U2 concept.

The U2 has an open architecture and is made from robust materials that reflect a no-nonsense urban style. It has practicality built-in, with a roll-back roof and a tailgate that can be folded down to create a ramp. A rail system makes it easy for owners to customise the interior just the way they want it.

Kevin Hunter, Calty President, said: “Toyota saw an opportunity for a new approach to an urban vehicle, based on the increasing re-urbanisation of our cities, and on urban drivers’; desire for flexibility, fun and manoeuvrability.

“Calty keeps a number of projects concealed while it explores ideas and projects. Revealing something like the U2 gives people a window onto the constant innovation that is happening inside Toyota and our studios, and a possible future vision for urban mobility.”

Customisable interior

The Calty team conceived U2 as a flexible, functional gadget, drawing their inspiration from modern entrepreneurship and Americans’; traditional love of adventure and outdoor pursuits that involve plenty of gear and equipment. It needed to be easily adaptable for individual on-the-go needs, witnessed in details such as a retractable utility bar that can do anything from hold a desk to provide hooks for shopping bags. The side windows flip up, so it’;s easy to reach in from the roadside.

Other highlights include: -

  • Folding, removable front passenger seat

  • Fold-up rear seats

  • New shift design with an intuitive switch for park, drive and reverse

  • New colour and trim material choices

Toyota research found the fast-growing market for small SUVs seeks greater usefulness, but a smaller vehicle footprint. U2 is the size of a compact car, but has the functionality of a traditional pick-up and the spaciousness of a cargo van. It also answers other urban driver priorities in delivering good fuel economy and being easy to manoeuvre, load and unload.

City streets call for a vehicle that can deal with bumper-to-traffic, potholes and tight turns. Toyota’;s U2 concept tackles these demands with a highly durable underbody and bodywork that’;s tough as a hand tool and which comes with customisable side panels. The look is modern and characterful, too, evident in details such as the slightly chunky proportions and circular door handles.

Mercedes-Benz makes a dynamic statement with the new GLA 45 AMG

3868b GLA 45 AMG

Mercedes-AMG is continuing its product initiative with rigour: with the new GLA 45 AMG the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz makes a dynamic statement in the strongly growing segment of the compact SUV. The combination of powerful-distinctive design, exclusive appointments as well as superior engine power and driving performance is unique: the most powerful series-production 4-cylinder engine in the world puts 265 kW and 450 Newton metres on the road. The new GLA 45 AMG high-performance SUV also shines with low emission and fuel consumption figures.

With fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined; CO2: 175 g/km) and compliance with EU 4 emissions standards, the GLA 45 AMG once again provides proof that at Mercedes-AMG maximum performance does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. The GLA 45 AMG also holds the pole position with regard to driving dynamics: it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the GLA 45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept.

Young target group: styling, dynamics and independence

In addition to the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG, the GLA 45 AMG is the third vehicle with 4-cylinder turbo engine to appeal to a young target group. The trend-oriented customers set great store by styling, dynamics and independence – traits that are perfectly embodied in the new high-performance SUV from Affalterbach. Meeting a wide variety of customer desires has always been one of the strengths of Mercedes-AMG.

The GLA 45 AMG now expands the extensive SUV line-up to 5 models (GLA 45 AMG, ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 63 AMG). Mercedes-AMG thus offers the widest range of SUVs among all high-performance premium brands.

Hallmark AMG features: the world’;s most powerful series-produced
4-cylinder engine

Best in class: the engine of the GLA 45 AMG fully lives up to this claim, as a look at the figures shows. The AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the most powerful series-production 4-cylinder engine in the world. It produces 265 kW (360 hp) of power and develops peak torque of 450 Newton metres. A power density of 133 kW (181 hp) puts the AMG high-performance turbo engine on a par with
the world’;s most powerful super sports cars.

Development of the high-performance turbo engine, which is part of the BlueDIRECT family, placed emphasis on a sustainable reduction in particulate emissions. Consequently the GLA 45 AMG today already complies with the second stage of the EU 4 emissions standard which will come into effect in 2017. The AMG 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors with an injection pressure of 200 bar, positioned centrally in the 4 combustion chambers. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel economy and significantly increases the thermodynamic efficiency, leading to low exhaust emissions. The injection system’;s outstanding flexibility also ensures a high degree of freedom in terms of application. There are up to 5 injections per combustion cycle in the cold-start and warm-up phase, which is so crucial for emissions. One of the key factors for in-engine particulate reduction is a reduction of the individual injection quantities.

Further highlights of the AMG 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine:

  • Gravity-die sand-cast all-aluminium crankcase

  • Weight-optimised crank mechanism with forged steel crankshaft

  • Forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings

  • NANOSLIDE cylinder liner technology

  • Air-to-water intercooling system

  • Alternator management
    • ECO start/stop function

Twin-scroll turbochargerand AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap

Mercedes-AMG addresses the basic challenge with regard to the throttle response of a small-capacity turbo engine by using a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum dethrottling of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. Twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure: utilisation of the exhaust back-pressure, exhaust-gas temperature and exhaust-gas pulse has a positive impact. This results in a faster build-up of torque already at low engine speeds. As a positive side-effect, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions also benefit from twin-scroll technology. With a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine leads the field on this front, too.

The AMG sports exhaust system in the GLA 45 AMG features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap: this technology reconciles the 2 conflicting goals of a dynamic driving experience and hallmark Mercedes suitability for long-distance driving. The flap in the rear silencer is continuously adjusted under map control according to the driver’;s performance needs, load condition and engine speed. The 2 rectangular chrome-plated twin tailpipes on the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating exhaust note, which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration. An AMG Performance exhaust system, also equipped with an exhaust flap, is available as an optional extra. Customers opting for this system will experience an even more appealing and distinctive engine sound.

Engine production – a tradition of hand-built excellence

The AMG 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine is assembled purely by hand in accordance with the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine fitter’;s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’;s high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission in the GLA 45 AMG features 3 distinct transmission modes, a double-declutching function dependent on the transmission mode and a RACE START function for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the dual-clutch transmission include spontaneous gear shifts without loss of tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy based on the AMG SPEEDSHIFT functions, extremely smooth gear shifts, and a high level of efficiency.

The shift times in manual mode “M” and in sport mode “S” are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car. Quick and precise retardation of the ignition interruptions and suppressing injection under full load lead to even faster gear shifts in “M” and “S” modes, with a more thrilling sound. The transmission control fully utilises the benefits of the direct injection technology right up to the physical limits: the quicker engine response ensures that injection is suppressed with even more precision. As a result, the shift speed and an emotional sound experience hold a very special fascination. Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving pleasure is the so-called “Momentary M mode” – as seen in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series super sports car.

In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), smooth transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style.
In addition, the ECO start/stop function is active in “C” mode.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard

The GLA 45 AMG comes with variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard. In developing this all-wheel-drive system, the focus was firmly on performance and dynamic spirit. The all-wheel-drive system provides for an ideal transfer of engine power to the road to provide perfect traction – regardless of the weather conditions. It also elevates driving dynamics to the highest level.

The entire drive unit boasts a weight-saving and compact design: the power take-off unit (PTU) is fully integrated into the 7-speed sports transmission and takes care of power transfer to the rear drivetrain. A 2-part propeller shaft sends the engine power to the rear axle as well. In the interests of favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multiple-disc clutch is integrated with the rear axle differential. The multiple-disc clutch control detects slip at the front axle. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this takes place without the driver noticing. Power distribution is fully variable: during normal driving the GLA 45 AMG uses front-wheel drive for optimal efficiency. When required by the driving situation, the variable all-wheel drive system splits the torque between the front and rear axles up to a ratio of 50:50 percent.

Typically for AMG, the Electronic Stability Program is configured as a 3-stage ESP®. The 3 modes “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” enable the driver to vary dynamic performance according to individual requirements at the push of a button. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is likewise included as standard. During dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the rear inside wheel creates a defined yaw moment about the vertical axis. As a result, the GLA 45 AMG steers precisely and under control at all times, the problem of understeer is banished.

AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system

One of the keys to agile handling is the axle technology: for enhanced driving dynamics, the McPherson front axle on the GLA 45 AMG is fitted with stiffer steering knuckles and new elastokinematics. The 4-link rear axle has also been newly developed. Stability and precision of handling are enhanced by the optimised elastokinematics and the rigid connection between the subframe and the body. The AMG sports suspension with specially tuned spring/damper units and bigger anti-roll bars provides for high lateral acceleration and reduced body roll in fast double bends. The hallmark Mercedes comfort on
long journeys is ensured all the same. An AMG performance suspension with firmer spring and damper tuning is available as an optional extra.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with AMG-specific, speed-dependent power assist ensures high steering precision and agility. The AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated, cross-drilled brake discs all-round and grey-painted brake callipers provides for spontaneous and reliable deceleration. Red brake callipers are available as an optional extra.

3 attractive AMG light-alloy wheels to choose from

In the standard specification the GLA 45 AMG runs on 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish, mounted with tyres of size 235/45 R 19. As an optional extra from the AMG Performance Studio, customers can opt for larger 10-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with tyres of size 235/40 R 20 – these are painted either titanium grey with high-sheen finish or matt black with high-sheen rim flange.

Design: sensual purity plus elements exclusive to AMG

The design of the GLA 45 AMG exudes fascination on account of its powerful and distinctive character. As the powerful AMG top-of-the-line model of the GLA-Class, the high-performance SUV combines the hallmark sensual purity
of Mercedes-Benz as an expression of modern luxury with muscular, dynamic AMG design elements. The AMG front apron with front splitter and the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille provide athletic highlights – both are painted in matt titanium grey. Completely new is the distinctive AMG lettering at the side between the louvres of the radiator grille. This will make all new AMG models easy to recognise in future. Black flics (air deflector elements) above the large exterior cooling air intakes allude to motor sport. Bi-xenon headlamps come as standard.

When viewed from the side, the distinctive AMG light-alloy wheels in 3 design variants catch the eye. The side sill panels with titanium grey inserts, the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings and the aluminium roof rails lend the GLA 45 AMG a special look. The rear end is dominated by the diffuser insert with titanium grey trim and by the rectangular, chrome-plated tailpipe trim of the twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

Interior design: high-quality, sporty, exclusive

As in all AMG high-performance automobiles, the interior of the GLA 45 AMG delights with its high-quality appeal, combined with sporty flair and exclusive equipment features. Sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with red contrasting topstitching and red designo safety belts are on board, as is the AMG DRIVE UNIT. The 3-spoke nappa leather multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section, red contrasting topstitching, perforated leather in the grip area and steering-wheel shift paddles allows for perfect vehicle control. The AMG instrument cluster with
2-tube design and central colour display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER is on hand to provide information to the driver. On opening the door, the driver is greeted by the AMG start-up screen. The trim of the instrument panel is of brushed aluminium and, in tandem with the brushed stainless-steel AMG front door sills, emphasises the high-grade, exclusive ambiance inside the GLA 45 AMG. The GLA 45 AMG “Edition 1″ is a special option which will be available for one year from market launch. The expressive arrangement of exclusive exterior and interior details arouses pure fascination.

Further details about the standard and optional equipment and about the
GLA 45 AMG “Edition 1″ can be found in the “GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC Edition 1 info” attached.

Tony Stewart’s NASCAR Return Confirmed for this Weekend: Yeah, That Sort of Makes Sense [Analysis]

9e953 Tony Stewart in 14 Chevrolet 626x417

Clearly, something was up. Every single weekend because the tragic sprint-car incident that took Kevin Ward, Jr.’s life, Tony Stewart’s PR representative, Mike Arning of Correct Speed Communication—Tony Stewart owns Correct Speed, by the way, and the organization also does PR for numerous NHRA and IMSA teams—has declined to reveal to any individual in advance regardless of whether Stewart would return to NASCAR competitors.

2 weeks ago, Arning announced that Stewart wouldn’t race at Michigan at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. This week, these of us waiting for an announcement waited and waited—practice at Atlanta Motor Speedway begins these days at 2:30 p.m., and we nonetheless hadn’t heard a peep at 4 p.m. yesterday. Who would be in the number 14 Chevrolet? Small rumors floated about. It was mentioned that Stewart’s name was on the vehicle when it was loaded into the hauler, not Regan Smith’s, who took his spot at Watkins Glen, or Jeff Burton’s, who drove the 14 at Michigan and Bristol. Another source stated that Stewart’s personalized seat had accompanied the vehicle.

Then, just after 4:30 p.m., Arning made the announcement: Stewart was racing, his 1st time out in public considering that his sprint vehicle hit and killed 20-year-old Ward, Jr., at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York. Ward was upset following Stewart crowded him into the wall. Ward had leapt from his wrecked vehicle to confront Stewart on the track, who was driving under the caution flag at about 40 mph. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Division stated the investigation could take 2 weeks or longer we’ve passed that time frame, even so, and nevertheless have however to hear the benefits. Stewart has been in seclusion considering that. Even TMZ couldn’t find him, and they can discover anybody.

d2434 Tony Stewart Mobil 1 14 Chevrolet 626x416

As for racing this weekend, a single has to think that Stewart’s legal group possibly received a tip that he was unlikely to be charged. Had the info stated otherwise, it is difficult to think about he would spot himself in a position for such public scrutiny.

Returning at Atlanta, then, tends to make sense. His several years driving under the banner of Atlanta-based House Depot for Joe Gibbs Racing produced him a lot of fans, and the atmosphere in Georgia is most likely a lot much more comfy and welcoming than those of Bristol, Michigan, or, for goodness’ sake, Watkins Glen, which is positioned about an hour’s drive from Canandaigua.

What does not make sense is Stewart’s press conference scheduled for today: Rather than holding one little conference or—even much better, from his standpoint—speaking to 1 reporter and letting that interview stand as the public record, Stewart is holding an open conference at the Atlanta Motor Speedway media center. And it appears likely that TMZ will uncover the door to that area.

Right away right after the conference, NASCAR president Mike Helton will speak, most likely to address regardless of whether Stewart will be eligible for the Chase for the Championship if he wins at Atlanta or Richmond, a situation so unlikely that even die-hard NASCAR grassy-knoll conspiracy theorists would be challenged to predict it. (Generally, NASCAR drivers who win 1 of the first 26 races clinch a spot in the 10-race Chase as long as they also finish amongst the top 30 in the “regular-season” driver standings.)

The guidelines specify that only NASCAR regulars who try to qualify for every race are eligible for the Chase, to avoid a “guest” driver from popping into the sport, winning a race, and then disappearing until the championship run. A clause in the guidelines says that the final choice on eligibility belongs to NASCAR, but addressing the situation before—and if—Stewart manages a win appears like self-flagellation.

301d5 Tony Stewart headshot 626x379

The bottom line: This will not be straightforward for any individual. Regardless of what Stewart does or doesn’t say today, and regardless of what the plodding investigation guidelines, fans and observers have dug in: Some are certain Stewart did all he could to miss Ward, and some are confident Stewart didn’t intentionally hit Ward but did steer toward him to brush him back, like a big-league pitcher buzzing a batter crowding the plate.

Nevertheless other people are particular that Stewart purposefully tried to hit Ward, and there are far more of these folks than you may feel. At Motorsport.com, where I am editor-in-chief, our story announcing that Stewart would race drew much more than 300 comments in 3 hours. They variety from “WOO HOO! Glad you are back, Smoke!” to “Beyond OUTRAGED! Revenge for Kevin Ward, Jr. RIP!”

Even if Stewart faces no criminal charges, a wrongful-death civil suit is not only attainable but probable. This story is just beginning, and for most of the media, Tony Stewart is the present that keeps on giving—an unprecedented tragedy in motorsports that could be in the news for months. There is only a single time in the subsequent handful of days that Stewart will be able to escape the scrutiny: during the 3-hour race on Sunday night. Welcome back? We’ll see.
