Comfortable and spacious

Staying inside the cabin of the Shogun, its multifunction show has reams of info obtainable.

This consists of a barometer and an altitude gauge, indicating that this is a car that has motoring potential stretching way beyond a farmer’s field.

The seats are comfy and supportive, and the huge glass region offers first-rate views of the road or rugged ground about you.

Rear seat space is colossal, and load capacity seems immeasurably big.

Optional 6-seater

A third row of seats can be popped up too, turning the Shogun into a 6-seater.

This is convenient if you’re taking a group of pals into the rough or you have got a posse of youngsters you need to have to drop off at school.

Away from the considerably commented luxury soft-roaders, heavy-duty workhorses such as the Shogun have carved out a exclusive niche in the market where capacity and dependability matter first and foremost.

More active style from 2015 Mitsubishi ASX

;

  • Exterior enhancements up style factor

  • Revised CVT improves fuel economy

  • ASX success set to continue in South Africa

20 JANUARY 2015 - The Mitsubishi ASX compact crossover is tackling the 2015 model year with a number of design and equipment updates, enhancing value and keeping in line with market trends.

Born out of core Mitsubishi brand values including reliability, integrity and practicality, the ASX (Active Smart Crossover) now features an enhanced, sleeker exterior look matched by an improved centre console design with a more upmarket feel on the inside.

All derivatives benefit from new black roof rails, chrome highlights inside and out, tinted windows and emergency stop signal brake lights. On GLX and GLS derivatives, new LED daytime running lights highlight redesigned front fog lamp surrounds, and new 17-inch alloy wheels add pizzazz to the side profile.

A bold new Lightning Blue paint hue is also available, allowing the striking design to be further exhibited. On the mechanical side, an updated CVT system enhances driveability and lowers fuel consumption in the automatic model.

c4038 Mitsubishi asx 3

“The ASX represented a new market for the Mitsubishi brand when we originally launched it in South Africa in 2011, where our renowned SUV roots could be experienced by a new buying audience for the brand,” comments Mitsubishi Motors South Africa COO, Wynand Pretorius.

“ASX has done well for us and with the 2015 model year enhancements, is set to continue to competitively attract younger, more upwardly-mobile buyers to our brand – it’;s a vehicle which possesses the SUV appeal and driving style valued so highly by South Africans, wrapped in the compact proportions and easy-to-drive nature most commonly experienced in compact hatchbacks.”

Pricing on the 2015 Mitsubishi ASX models remains ultimately competitive as well, and in the United States, the ASX has been named as one of the authoritative Kelley Blue Book’;s ’;10 Most Affordable SUVs’;.

ASX virtues continue unabated

Continuing as a 5-model range, the ASX line-up features GL, GLX and GLS derivatives, all powered by Mitsubishi’;s trusted 2.0-litre normally-aspirated petrol engine. The multi-point fuel injection MPi unit produces 110 kW at 6 000 rpm and 197 Nm at 4 200 rpm.

All derivatives are front-wheel drive, 3 of which feature a 5-speed manual gearbox, alongside the 2 range-topping GLS automatics which feature a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which has the ability to simulate a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

For 2015, the CVT in particular has received extra attention. The most notable technical design change was made to CVT internals, where a larger-spectrum lock-up range provides for greater driving pleasure and enhanced fuel economy due to the bigger selection of theoretical ‘gear ratios’; available to the driver in auto mode, adaptive to driver input and driving style. As with the existing CVT derivative, manual shift mode is available, allowing the driver to manually override the transmission with 6 simulated gear ratios. NVH reduction has also been achieved with the new CVT.

65c6a Mitsubishi asx 2

Fuel economy is admirable on all derivatives, the manual models realising an average of 7.5-litres per 100 km on the combined cycle with carbon emissions of 175 g/km. The CVT model’;s fuel consumption is now lower at 7.4-litres per 100 km, with carbon emissions of 178 g/km. A 63-litre fuel tank ensures long driving ranges – around 800 km on typical mixed driving.

Embodying SUV design and practicality, the Mitsubishi ASX has excellent visibility for the driver and great agility with 195 mm of ground clearance available. The raised ground clearance means the ASX is equally at home on tarred city roads as well as out-of-town dirt roads, where superior ride comfort also contributes to a can-do attitude, thanks to the suspension design. Front suspension is an independent MacPherson setup with a stabiliser bar, and at the rear a multi-link independent system is employed, along with a stabiliser bar. The suspension configuration results in reduced NVH levels being achieved as well as a smoother ride.

Conducive to holiday trips as much as being expertly practical for the school run, the ASX features a spacious boot with a large, uninhibited opening for easy loading, with 442 litres of boot space available with the rear seats up. When the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down, a total of 1 193 litres are available.

The roomy cabin also features generous head- and leg room for all occupants, as well as ample storage compartments for ultimate practicality.

High specifications for all model grades

All ASX derivatives maintain high levels of standard specification, enhanced for 2015. Most importantly, the Mitsubishi hallmark of no compromise on safety sees all models featuring high safety levels.

The ASX features 5-star Euro NCAP and ANCAP safety ratings thanks to 6 airbags (including a driver’;s knee airbag), ABS with EBD and BAS, as well as Mitsubishi’;s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction, whiplash-mitigating seats, a collapsible steering column and brake pedal recession protection. The electric power steering also features an anti-backlash system for smoother and safer steering control.

All ASX derivatives, from the entry level GL to the range topping GLS, are full specification SUVs – perfect for the family.  The list of standard specifications is impressive – even for the entry level GL version.

The ASX 2.0 GL’;s feature highlights include dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers, LED tail lights, a rear spoiler, front fog lamps, 16-inch alloy wheels with 215/65 tyres, electric windows all round, electric folding side mirrors, a multi-function leather-bound steering wheel with rake and reach adjustment, manual air conditioning, cruise control, a multi-info trip computer, rear parking sensors, remote central locking and a 6-speaker multi-media audio system which includes CD, radio and USB support as well as Bluetooth and voice control.

c586c Mitsubishi asx 4

The mid-range Mitsubishi ASX 2.0 GLX features enhanced specifications on top of standard GL equipment, including the new LED daytime running lights, new 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/60 tyres, a panoramic glass roof with switchable LED illumination, leather upholstery, electric driver’;s seat adjustment, heated front seats, automatic climate control, heated side mirrors, touch screen radio, a reversing camera and a keyless operation system with one-touch start.

The range-topping ASX 2.0 GLS models raise the bar even higher with the addition of HID headlamps (CVT derivatives only), an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, integrated lights on the side mirrors, Active Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist for inclined pull-offs. In typical Mitsubishi tradition, the GLS manual is also available as standard with a fully-fledged 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate premium audio system – available as an option on the CVT.

All derivatives in the Mitsubishi ASX range come standard with a 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/ 90 000 km service plan, linked to service intervals of 15 000 km.

Updates to Mitsubishi Pajero keep icon at the top

f093e Pajero

With its roots set deeply in the world of rallying and having set the bar over several decades as one of the world’;s most formidable off-roaders, the Mitsubishi Pajero has received a number of updates based on customer feedback and market trends.

“We know we have a winning formula with Pajero,” comments Mitsubishi Motors South Africa COO, Wynand Pretorius. “Pajero remains the epitome of ultimate off-road ability meeting urban comfort and practicality, and with its latest updates we will appeal to more trend-conscious customers. The great news is that the retail price of the new 2015 model derivatives starts at R569 900, offering unbeatable value when compared to similar competitor vehicles retailing around the R750 000 mark.”

The iconic Pajero, which to this day still holds a record twelve wins (6 of them consecutive) at the infamous Dakar Rally, continues as a pukka 4×4 SUV with no compromise on off-road ability, passenger comfort and safety – famous for proven reliability, durability, longevity, performance and being the perfect partner for any adventure.

“Pajero remains superbly confident in town or in the bush, where customer feedback from people who drive Pajeros anywhere and everywhere has led to the latest model’;s updates,” adds Pretorius.

Specification upgrades

The 2015 model year Pajero range, which continues to include both short- and long-wheelbase derivatives all powered by Mitsubishi’;s proven 3.2-litre DI-D turbocharged diesel engine, now features a number of cosmetic enhancements.

A new grille and bumper design with bulky proportions emphasise Pajero’;s might off the beaten track, giving it a modern-day appearance without changing its distinctive iconic and hallmark looks, honed through the decades. Incorporated in the front bumper are switchable LED daytime running lights, while the bumper’;s design still allows for class-leading approach and departure angles.

New alloy wheels, different for each derivative, further emphasise the distinct side profile of the Pajero. A newly designed and sturdier new spare wheel cover on the LWB derivatives now covers the entire spare wheel whilst giving the vehicle a more modern look from the rear as well.

On the inside, the standard rear view camera now displays its picture on the infotainment system interface, and automatic headlight dimming is now available on all derivatives.

3-model range simplified and amplified

Comprising the SWB GLS, LWB GLS and the LWB GLS Exceed, the simplified new 3-model Pajero range embodies the ‘we race, you win’; mentality behind the Mitsubishi brand and the incomparable Dakar legacy which made the brand globally famous for its quality, performance and reliability.

“The Dakar environment is undoubtedly the most gruelling and intense off-road racing spectacle anywhere in the world, and one in which the Mitsubishi brand proved its off-road know-how and ability to build tough, reliable vehicles, year after year. These important attributes can be found in all our road-going vehicles, with the Pajero exhibiting the brand’;s off-road credentials most prominently,” continues Pretorius.

As such, all Pajero models offer fully-fledged 4-wheel drive systems, which include centre and rear differential locks (viscous couplings), and Mitsubishi’;s unique Super Select 4WD system. Super Select 4WD includes an easy-to-use manual shift lever which allows the driver to choose between 4 drive modes.

The 2H mode is most suitable for town driving, where only the rear wheels are driven, offering enhanced fuel economy and manoeuvrability. In 4H mode and with shift-on-the-fly available at speeds up to 100 km/h, all 4 wheels are engaged for greater control with 34% of the power distributed to the front wheels and 66% to the rear wheels, giving it a typical AWD vehicle experience. In 4HLc mode, changes are made to the traction control system and the centre diff lock is engaged for enhanced control in tougher circumstances, now distributing the power 50:50 to the front and rear wheels. The 4LLc mode engages low-range and deactivates the traction control system for ultimate control in even the stickiest of situations. The rear diff lock can be engaged manually by means of a switch, according to driver needs and environment demands.

The 3.2-litre DI-D common-rail direct injection turbocharged diesel engine produces 140 kW at 3 800 rpm and 441 Nm at 2 000 rpm with power transferred to the wheels via a silky-smooth 5-speed automatic gearbox with manual override functionality. Fuel requirements have also been designed to meet varying needs and as such all Pajero models are able to safely operate on 500 ppm diesel when necessary.

Emphasising on- and off-road comfort and bestowing Pajero with its impeccable on-road manners especially, rear suspension remains an independent setup, which not only ensures bumps and undulating surfaces are smoothed out, but improved off-road capabilities are also enabled where extended wheel travel plays an important role. Towing capacity is impressive at 3 300 kg (braked) and ground clearance remains a generous 235 mm. The extraordinary departure and approach angles of the SWB derivative (34.8° and 36.7° respectively) are class-leading and make the Pajero almost unstoppable. The LWB derivatives have an equally impressive 36.6° approach angle and a 25° departure angle to tackle any type of terrain.

Both the SWB and LWB GLS derivatives continue with high specifications, including the latest updates. Standard features include electric windows all-round with one-touch anti-trapping functionality for all windows, privacy glass, a sliding front arm rest with 2 storage levels, reclining rear seats and an extra 2 in the LWB (7 in total) which are stowed neatly in the boot floor.

Leather upholstery, electric and heated front seats, the rear view camera, rear parking sensors, variable intermittent windscreen wipers, front and rear fog lights, the LED daytime running lights, black roof rails, mud flaps, a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, voice control, cruise control, automatic climate control, rear air conditioning control (LWB only), and a radio/CD/MP3 touch screen audio system with USB and aux support are also standard on all derivatives.

The range-topping LWB GLS Exceed model raises the bar with a 12-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system, HID xenon headlights with washers, 18-inch alloy wheels, an electric sliding/tilting panoramic sunroof and a wood/leather combination steering wheel for an added touch of luxury.

Famously Mitsubishi, all models also continue to feature the Multi-Information Display, which includes 2 fuel economy metres, tank range, average speed, outside temperature, a barometer, a compass and an altimeter.

Safety equipment remains of high standards, all models featuring ABS with EBD and BAS, ASTC (Active Stability and Traction Control), 6 airbags, an immobiliser and alarm, and remote central locking. Mitsubishi’;s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) chassis and body construction is also employed, ensuring a rigid chassis and impact-absorbing body structure which saw the Pajero receive a 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating.

All Pajero models are sold as standard with a 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/ 100 000 km maintenance plan, with service intervals every 10 000 km.

Updates to Mitsubishi Pajero keep icon at the top

0fce6 Pajero

Automobile assessment: Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid electric SUV

This high-tech hybrid electric SUV is in a class of its personal. A great decision for environmentally-conscious households, writes car reviewer Tim Barnes-Clay.

The Mitsubishi PHEV could look like a normal Outlander, but hiding behind the mask is the most technologically advanced sport utility vehicle (SUV) on the market.

PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid electric automobile. It indicates the SUV can be fed by electricity from a domestic socket to power electric motors that are supported by a petrol engine.

2 electric motors drive the front and rear axles separately while batteries enable electricity-only driving at up to 75mph.

Beyond that pace, or should the battery pack drain to significantly less than 30% of its charge, a 2.-litre petrol engine kicks in to life.

It acts as a generator to help the PHEV accomplish a total driving variety of about 500 miles on a full tank.

Great fuel efficiency

The Outlander PHEV is also the most fuel efficient 4-wheel drive.

That’;s astounding for a household-size automobile that guidelines the scales at a bulky 1,810kg, and seats 5.

As a international 1st, the Outlander PHEV also has no direct rival.

The closest is the Lexus RX450h, though it cannot be recharged via a powerpoint and cannot run on electricity alone.

All mod cons

Befitting its very first-class status in the Outlander variety, the PHEV is extremely nicely stacked with kit.

It has 18-inch alloy wheels, dusk-sensing auto headlamps, touch-screen with satellite navigation and reversing camera, climate manage, parking sensors and 6 airbags.

The flagship GX4hs was driven for this evaluation and the model comes with added functions such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.

The latter squeals at you if it detects you have drifted across the road’s white dividing lines.

Impressive following a slow commence

If you’;re used to a common automobile, it is going to be a peculiar expertise the first time you gently push the gearstick over to the correct into D and drive off in silence.

Even sharp jabs of the throttle create the exact same quantity of hush, although that has its rewards – the audio unit is only typical, so at least there is plenty of clarity in the quiet cabin.

The Outlander PHEV isn’;t rapid from a standing start, but tremendous pulling energy tends to make up for it when you get going.

Initial acceleration suffers simply since of the heavy jumble of battery and electric motors that the regular Outlander doesn’;t possess.

Simple charging

When you need to have to recharge on the move, all you need to have to do is hit the Charge switch behind the joystick, which fires up the 4-cylinder engine to replenish the battery.

A single charge through a powerpoint requires 5 hours, which could price you next to practically nothing based on the time of day you decide on to plug in to the grid.

Inside, it is pretty much common Outlander layout apart from the joystick-style gearstick and electric charging buttons.

The tachometer has also been replaced by a energy meter, which shows when you’;re charging up or utilizing the battery, or operating the engine.

Green, yet effective

Behind the wheel, physique handle is good for an SUV of this weight as the Outlander PHEV profits from Mitsubishi’;s Super All-Wheel Manage (S-AWC).

This is a program that ensures maximum stability when cornering.

Certainly, for its green yet powerful talents, Mitsubishi’;s PHEV is an SUV that a lot of British families will take to their hearts.

Mitsubishi to enter supermini segment with new Mirage

05f23 Capture42 1024x636

Mitsubishi Mirage

  • Stylish newcomer to offer exceptional value and low cost of ownership

  • Fuel efficiency a design and engineering priority

  • Mirage to tackle first- and second-time buyers’; markets

14 JULY 2014 - As part of an expanding footprint in South Africa, Mitsubishi Motors is gearing up for the debut of the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage in August 2014. Poised to take the fight to competitors in the budget- and youth-focused A-segment, the stylish new entry-level 5-door Japanese hatchback prides itself on providing fuel efficient, enjoyable motoring with particularly youthful appeal.

A new 3-model range will arrive with trusted Mitsubishi integrity, reliability and practicality as well as exceptional fuel efficiency and safety.  The superbly compact proportions envelop a spacious and manoeuvrable vehicle which is an ideal everyday runabout.

“Mitsubishi is renowned all over the world as one of Japan’;s foremost automotive brands and we are on a resurgence in the South African market,” comments Wynand Pretorius, General Manager at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.

“With the new Mirage, the brand will be entering the A-segment for the very first time in South Africa, and with a fun little car at that. We exhibited the new Mirage at last year’;s Johannesburg International Motor Show, where we received extremely positive responses from show-goers. In these ever-increasingly difficult economic times, it makes all the sense in the world to introduce our new supermini, which will be very competitively priced.

“In this vein, we are taking a very strong approach on the viability of Mirage as an entry-level vehicle, specifically targeting a market where purchase price, fuel efficiency and ownership costs play vital determining roles in the buying process.”

All new Mirage derivatives will be powered by Mitsubishi’;s 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder MIVEC DOHC petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Easily able to keep up with the hustle and bustle of busy city streets as well as the open roads so characteristic of South Africa, the Mirage is also exceptionally fuel efficient thanks to MIVEC – Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control.

Average fuel economy on the combined cycle is just 4.9-litres per 100 km, allowing Mirage to punch above its weight on the fuel efficiency front. In fact, Mirage is acclaimed as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid petrol vehicle available in the United States, a market where it is also sighted as the lightest 5-door, 5-passenger vehicle. This was achieved after an extensive weight-saving engineering process with key benefits linked directly to enhanced fuel efficiency.

Impressive too is that Mirage is fitted as standard with creature comforts like keyless entry and a full complement of safety equipment including ABS, EBD and dual airbags, packaged in a funky-looking body designed around Mitsubishi’;s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact-absorbing chassis structure.

The new Mitsubishi Mirage will be backed by Mitsubishi Motors’;s comprehensive 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. Full range details and pricing will be announced at launch.
