The “Zoom-Zoom” brand celebrates 95 years of driving fun

The Japanese automaker was founded January 31, 1920, and over the years the company has carved a very unique path in the automotive world. As the only Japanese automaker to ever win at the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda has proven itself on roads and racetracks. From the Wankel rotary engine to the SKYACTIV next generation technologies, the “Zoom-Zoom” brand has given the car world an incredible mix of fun-loving vehicles.

Mazda originally built tools and, eventually, began producing 3-wheeled motorized rickshaws. It would be roughly 4 decades before Mazda got into the business of building cars and trucks.

When it did, the then upstart automaker did so with gusto and engineering bravado. In the 1960s, Mazda launched the exceedingly rare Wankel-powered Cosmo coupe, which had an incredibly compact Wankel motor that was a fraction of the size and weight of a normal piston-driven motor, yet it packed enormous punch despite its tiny dimensions.

Improving on the collectible and exceedingly rare Wankel-powered Cosmo coupe, Mazda looked poised to usher in a totally new era in automotive propulsion introducing the brilliantly lithe RX-7 sports car with fantastically spry handling characteristics in 1978. By the 1990s, the RX-7 had turned into a curvaceous and turbocharged fire-breather, capable of running with the world’;s best speed machines.

Mazda has always had a challenger spirit that defies convention and a history of taking what was considered impossible and making it possible. This innovative characteristic saw Mazda redefine the automotive landscape. After all, it was Mazda that reinvigorated the roadster market, when it launched the first MX-5 back in 1989. For over 25 years now, the Mazda MX-5 has captured the hearts of auto enthusiasts like few other vehicles. Yet Mazda hasn’;t devoted all its energy into a few special sport-tuned models, remember the Mazda 323 – one South Africa’;s most loved and ever so popular model.

Today, the SKYACTIV suites of engineering upgrades have a blueprint for better handling, improved fuel economy and higher performance and still deliver the same fun-to-drive features found in preceding Mazda classics.

“Mazda has always been committed to building stylish, insightful and spirited vehicles that are fun to drive and targeting those individuals who love the joy of motion and enjoy their lives through driving experiences. With the recently revamped line-up which includes the SKYAVTIV Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, the eminent all-new Mazda2, the all-new CX-3 and new generation MX-5 on the horizon; Mazda’;s future looks eclectic and bright. MSA is proud to be part of this growing brand as we celebrate 95 years of innovation.” – commented Mr David Hughes, MD Mazda Southern Africa.
