Suspects arrested for car jacking and armed robbery in Umlazi




Umlazi Crime Intelligence Unit arrested a 29-year-old man for armed robbery today, 28 January 2015. He was arrested at Illovu area near KwaMakhutha after they followed up information about his whereabouts. The suspect is believed to be a mastermind of gang that is allegedly involved in robbing vehicles delivering cigarettes in KwaDabeka and the surroundings and will be joining other 2 suspects who were already in custody for the same case. He might be linked to other similar robberies that were reported in other areas. The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.


On 18 December 2014 during the day the victim was at KwaDabeka area delivering cigarettes in one of the shops when he was approached by 2 suspects who were armed with firearms. They took cigarettes and loaded it into their own vehicle and fled the scene. A case of robbery was opened at KwaDabeka and the members started to look for the suspects. They followed up information that the suspect’s vehicle was seen at KwaMashu area and they found it with 2 occupants. The suspects were arrested and the vehicle was found with stolen cigarettes. Both suspects were charged with armed robbery.


The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the KwaDabeka and Umlazi Crime Intelligence Unit for the arrest they made. ‘This is a true reflection that our members are committed in fighting trio crimes in the province. The arrested suspects will be profiled and see if they are not linked to other similar cases in the province,’ she said.
