The all-new, 4th-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata‘s lengthy, slow march to dealerships has just spiked our excitement for the third time. The 1st jolt came when the auto debuted, while the second arrived when we drove a European-spec vehicle in Barcelona earlier this year. Now, the 2016 Miata’s price has been announced—and it’s mighty agreeable.
The new car may use far more aluminum and high-strength steel (and pack far more normal content material) than prior to, but that hasn’t pushed its cost significantly greater. At $ 25,735, the base 2016 Miata Sport model is just $ 945 more than the equivalent 2015 model and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, LED headlights, a leather-wrapped shift knob, a USB audio input, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The outgoing 2015 Miata Sport uses a 5-speed manual, and a USB port, Bluetooth, or a leather-wrapped shift knob can’t even be ordered in truth, a USB port isn’t available on any 2015 Miata, and Bluetooth only comes standard on the top-of-the-line Grand Touring. All of that, and Mazda says the 2016 MX-5 Miata is really lighter than the old automobile. We’ll have to confirm that with our own scales, of course, but the claim is at least promising.
The 2016 Miata comes standard with a 2.-liter 4-cylinder engine and 17-inch wheels (base international versions get a smaller sized 1.6-liter 4 and 16-inch wheels) when they go on sale later this year. Mazda will provide 3 trim levels that mirror today’s Sport, Club, and Grand Touring specifications, with the base Sport intended to offer you value, the Club intended for track rats, and the Grand Touring getting the choice for these looking to take their Miata jollies in higher luxury and comfort.
Pricing for these models is forthcoming—as are costs for the optional automatic transmission—but the outgoing Club model started at $ 27,725 and the Grand Touring at a rich $ 28,370. Expect these rates to rise slightly when they’re assigned to the 2016 versions, but we’re encouraged by the 2016 MX-5 Miata Sport’s sub-$ 26K base cost, as it keeps the Miata firmly in everyman territory.
