Ford Provides to License Its Police “Surveillance Mode” Camera Tech to Other Cop-Automobile Makers

September 19, 2014 at 10:08 pm by Clifford Atiyeh | Photography by YouTube/Ford

a899e Ford Police Interceptor Surveillance Mode 626x354

We’ve sat in parking lots, bored, and switched on the backup camera feed to watch who’s behind us. Now Ford has brought this notion to its logical and security-oriented conclusion for its Police Interceptor models: If an individual walks also close to the rear, the parking sensors beep, the doors lock, and the windows roll up.

Ford calls this trick “Surveillance Mode” and bills it as “a very first line of defense from prospective assailants” the automaker and its partner are now willing to license it to other manufacturers of police sleds. Certain non-cop autos from companies such as Tesla and Land Rover do enable the driver to enable the backup camera at any time, even at highway speeds. And automobiles with front and side cameras—which Ford doesn’t provide on its Taurus- and Explorer-primarily based Interceptors—can display a 360-degree view, which this technique cannot.

But as the officer in the under video attests, numerous police males and females have their heads down undertaking paperwork or working on their laptop even though idling, and this system does give them a heads-up to get their heads up when somebody gets as well close. And given the Taurus’s mail-slot rear window, her point that it supplies a wider field of view—particularly of a person’s hands—is well taken.

Police crack whip on crash for money

The police are cracking down on car insurance fraudsters who endanger road users by “crashing for cash”, with a quantity of high profile convictions over the final few weeks.

b528a road traffic accident

Earlier this week, for instance, 2 men were jailed and 2 much more received suspended jail terms at Liverpool Crown Court.

And last month, 3 males from Reading had been put behind bars for targeting innocent motorists in the hope of causing unnecessary collisions as element of a crash for cash scam.

What’s going on?

Insurance fraud shot up by 18% in 2013, pushing the total to a record £1.3 billion, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Some of this fraud was committed by opportunistic people who just attempt to boost the value of a genuine claim by adding extra items to the list of possessions stolen or damaged in an incident, or who fake or exaggerate an injury, usually whiplash.

Organised insurance coverage fraud has an altogether darker side, even though – a single in which criminal gangs place innocent road users’ lives at threat by staging dangerous accidents to defraud insurers.

Recognized as “crash for cash”, it’s a trend that has grown at a worrying rate more than recent years.

Figures released by insurer Aviva earlier this year show that the quantity of crashes triggered deliberately so that these involved could make insurance claims for whiplash injuries shot up by 51% final year.

With motorists and pedestrians becoming place at risk, and “crash for cash” accidents causing the business far more than £10 million a year, it’s no surprise that both insurers and the government are keen to crack down on the perpetrators.

How do “crash for crash” scams perform?

There are a quantity of diverse kinds of “crash for cash” fraud.

In 1 of the most common – and most unsafe – versions, fraudsters stage a automobile crash involving innocent drivers, for instance by slamming their brakes on at a road junction, often obtaining disabled the brake lights.

The unsuspecting motorist behind then crashes into the back of them, which means they can make a claim for the damage, as well as whiplash injuries – all on the other person’s insurance.

The Reading fraudsters sentenced last month had been involved in this sort of scam – they drove in a 2-car convoy in which the very first would make an erratic manoeuvre, causing the second auto to brake and an innocent road user to drive into the back of it.

The Merseyside men jailed this week, on the other hand, simply fabricated a vehicle crash made to assist them defraud insurer LV= out of much more than £500,000.

The total integrated claims for whiplash, replacement car hire and 2 written off automobiles – all from an accident that never took location.

What is being done to stop car insurance coverage fraud?

The Ministry of Justice is taking a quantity of actions to clamp down on car insurance coverage fraudsters, such as “crash for cash” gangs.

It is, for instance, introducing panels of independent health-related practitioners to diagnose whiplash victims, as well as banning lawyers and claim firms from offering incentives such as cost-free tablet computers to encourage people to make insurance claims.

From subsequent year, courts will also be in a position to refuse compensation at any level to men and women found to have exaggerated an insurance coverage claim.

The ABI has also launched the Insurance coverage Fraud Register (IFR) to combat the problem of dishonest Britons faking and exaggerating claims for their personal personal achieve.

The first market-wide database of identified insurance fraudsters, the IFR assists insurers to spot dodgy claims more easily.

Trickle-Down Armor: Feds Donate MRAPs to Neighborhood Police Departments

2baca 477270813 626x417

As the nation focuses on the turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri, this week, here’s a look at a vehicular example of the swiftly growing and disturbing trend of police militarization across the United States.

Built by many companies in a dizzying array of variations, the MRAP (mine-resistant, ambush-protected) is a wheeled legacy of America’s Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It is engineered about armored, V-shaped hulls to survive mine and improvised-explosive-device attacks.

The 1st owner of Eureka, California’s own Navistar MaxxPro, the Department of Defense (DoD), spent between $ 500,000 and $ 700,000 to purchase it—one of the thousands of autos the Pentagon initially acquired for a reported $ 40–$ 50 billion. It’s now 1 of hundreds of MRAPs flowing to local police agencies. Eureka’s force, as with many police departments about the country, acquired its MRAP gratis under the DoD’s “Excess Home Plan,” which donates surplus ground cars, aircraft, weapons, and other gear to state and local law-enforcement agencies.

MRAPs, nonetheless, are poorly suited to domestic life, according to Radley Balko, author of Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces. Balko says, “They move gradually, they get terribly high-priced to preserve, and they get terrible mileage.” The armor-plated MRAPs, as it turns out, also tend to be tippy. With as much as 20 tons spread amongst just 2 axles, the MRAPs are so heavy that they can damage roads and must be barred from some bridges.

For civil libertarians, the major problem with neighborhood police operating MRAPs is this: They contribute to an inappropriate military mind-set that has cops thinking they’re at war with the citizenry. Instead of becoming used in exceedingly rare scenarios involving barricaded suspects or terrorists, domesticated MRAPs wind up transporting SWAT teams serving warrants—almost encouraging such scenarios to escalate violently. The Baltimore Sun reports that in 1 Maryland county in 2009, SWAT teams had been sent out an average of much more than 4 occasions per day, and only 6 % of these deployments were for intense emergency conditions.

But several police officers appreciate the protection. “We have no plans to mount a machine gun,” mentioned undersheriff Shawn Lamouree of Warren County, New York, to the Associated Press last year. “The entire thought is to protect the occupants.” They may possibly not need significantly protection: There have been just 4 murders reported by the Warren County Sheriff among 1997 and 2012, the latest year for which the FBI has information.

Balko criticizes the Pentagon for not undertaking a great job tracking the MRAPs or how they’re getting utilised soon after they leave DoD possession. But there are a lot of MRAPs coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and numerous are in close to-new condition. Eureka’s showed only 4000 miles on its odometer. There are a lot of police departments that want them, and according to the AP, 165 surplus MRAPs were distributed in 2013. There had been unfilled requests for 731 much more.

South Carolina Crackdown: Police Stings Target Ridesharing

Police are warning the public about the insurance coverage-associated risks of ridesharing service Uber, according to South Carolina news reports.

Charleston police will hold “sting operations” to warn Uber drivers and possibly fine them after the service launched in Charleston weeks ago, according to The Post and Courier, which also reported that Uber intends to spend these fines for its drivers there.

Uber and other ridesharing solutions use smartphone apps to connect passengers and drivers. Drivers normally use their individual vehicles to drive passengers, raising questions with authorities over gaps in coverage and public safety.

Uber launched in Greenville, Columbia and Myrtle Beach on July 8. According to other news reports, ridesharing drivers in all of those cities could be stopped by police for warnings and citations.

Earlier this month, the state regulatory office for South Carolina auto insurance issued a consumer alert about ridesharing and the transportation ne2rk companies (TNCs) that offer you such services.

“Most standard personal auto policies include exclusions for livery—which usually means ‘driving for hire,’” according to the consumer alert. “Consumers need to read their policies meticulously, specifically the exclusions section of the policy.”

Under Uber’s auto insurance coverage, $ 1 million in industrial liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is in impact throughout the period from when a driver accepting a rideshare trip to the finish of that trip.

A driver’s private auto insurance policy applies to the period just before a rideshare trip starts, usually when the driver has the Uber app open but hasn’t but accepted a rider. Throughout this period, according to Uber, the company gives 50/25/25 in “back-up coverage coverage/when/if driver’s personal auto insurance coverage declines claim.”

A equivalent insurance coverage setup also exists at Lyft, another ridesharing firm.

Lyft announced alterations to its auto insurance coverage this month that tends to make its $ 1 million commercial policy the principal payer in case of a claim for incidents that occur for the duration of a ride. Previously, commercial coverage for that period was secondary, which means it would only kick in if an insurer denied a claim or a driver’s own policy limits were exhausted.

Pilot wails

The decision to extend the service hours is a result of a productive pilot carried out in October 2013, when the helpline was accessible 24/7 for a 4-week period.

The pilot demonstrated the appetite of police officers to get in touch with the helpine for the duration of antisocial hours to establish no matter whether or not valid insurance was in location.

It brought in more than 3,800 calls to the helpline which resulted in over 850 vehicles becoming seized for no insurance coverage, all during a period which would generally be out of hours.
