Survey finds that very first Geely EC7 customers are still smiling

  • Very first Geely EC7 customers still smiling

  • Distances of up to 45 000 covered in just 18 months

  • Value for money, economy and trouble-free ownership praised

What do an aircraft engineer, a technician, a teacher and a retired couple that are all living a happy life with a broad smile every day, have in common? In this case they all drive the exciting Geely EC7 sedan, which was launched in South Africa last year.

An independent survey conducted by Outlook Africa revealed that each of the owners we spoke to, was extremely happy with their purchase. Comments such as “outstanding value for money” and “the best car we could have bought” were part of each of the interviews conducted by phone.

The Geely Emgrand EC7 was launched in May 2013 as the luxury division of Geely. The EC7 is a high-quality luxury sedan with high spec as part of a vision to establish a new range for the discerning buyer, but at an affordable price. The EC7 starts at a surprisingly low R164 990 for the Luxury and R174 990 for the Executive version, offering buyers outstanding value for money.

Travelling distances of only 7 000 kilometres to nearly 45 000 from May last year to September 2014, each and every customer we spoke to expressed 100% satisfaction with their choice of daily transport.

Quintin Morris, an instrument technician at South African Airways in Kempton Park in Gauteng, uses his Geely EC7 Luxury for his daily commute between Pretoria and the East Rand.

“My car is approaching its 45 000 km service date soon, and apart from a blown headlight, I have never had any problems with my EC7.” Coming from a man who earns his living by working in the high tech world of aviation equipment, this is a very positive eulogy.

“A colleague of mine followed my example and bought the Executive model, and apart from an extra side airbag, electronic niceties such as traction control and electric adjustment of the driver’;s seat, the only visible difference is the sunroof. I am extremely happy with my car. The 1800cc engine is more than adequate, not to mention the high levels of standard equipment.”

This was echoed by James Enslin from Sasolburg, who uses his car mainly on the open road at speeds of “somewhere between 120 and 130″ to stay out of trouble.

“I get around 14 kilometres to the litre, which is outstanding for a 1.8 at those speeds. I used to drive a Volvo (and many other cars), and the Geely does not shy away from any of them. The build quality is extremely good, and the engine is perfect,” says this mechanical fitter with 33 years experience at Sasol.

“After 9 700 km the car is still as good as the day I bought it over a year ago,” he says.

Mr William Maluleka, a teacher from Germiston, says overall his experience is “so far, so good”.

“The EC7 offers more equipment than I expected, so I am very happy. It really is a very nice car with excellent quality. After 19 000 km the fuel consumption is quite reasonable – not bad for a 1.8 engine; not bad at all.”

Maluleka regularly travels to Giyani in Limpopo, covering the distance of well over 520 km on a single tank. “And then I still have enough petrol to drive around.”

In the Western Cape, Mrs Barbara Millward believes she was the very first customer in the province – “and probably the whole country” – to receive her EC7 Lux. “Apart from the car being just absolutely perfect, the after-sales service I receive from Geely Goodwood is fantastic. Although I would have preferred an automatic transmission, the car drives easily and without any effort whatsoever. We only drive around town and according to my husband get around 13km/litre, but we are planning to take on the open road to Mossel Bay or Port Owen soon. I am sure we will again be surprised by the quality, feel and brilliant performance.”

Quintin Morris also praised the service he receives from Geely in Gezina, where he bought his car in May last year. “Maybe I was the first owner.”

The Geely EC7 is available at all Geely dealerships and distributors in all 9 provinces in South Africa, as well as in Namibia and most of South Africa’;s neighbouring countries.

Have you ever utilized a buyer’s agent to negotiate a property acquire? Is it some thing you may possibly think about? (Click here to find out what a buyer’s agent does). If speaking with a buyer’s agent is on your agenda, the Genuine Estate Purchasers Agents Association of Australia (REBAA) suggests that you ask the following inquiries:

1. What is their expertise in the geographic area you are contemplating?

They say that nearby information is invaluable, so you need to have to guarantee that your buyer’s agent has a good information of the neighbourhood in which you are wanting to get. Ask what and where their most recent purchases have been.

2. Do they operate as an exclusive buyer’s agent?

In other words, are they operating for and getting paid by you and no-1 else?  “Some agents calling themselves ‘buyers’ agents’ have actually been taking a fee from a selling agent’s commission, yet claiming to function for the purchaser,”

mentioned REBAA president Jacque Parker. ““This is a clear conflict of interest since properly they are representing the vendor, they’re not acting solely on behalf of the purchaser.”

3. Are they a licensed buyer’s agent?

Usually an agency can be licensed in a single state but not the other and still advertise that they act for purchasers of home interstate. Each state and territory in Australia has distinct licensing specifications.  Check whether or not they are REBAA accredited.

4. Can they supply current client testimonials/references?

Usually ask to speak to earlier consumers, just as you would speak to a referee for a job interview. This process can help alleviate any concerns you could have about your potential agent.

Petrol rates hit 4-year low

Supermarkets are cutting petrol prices again – Sainsbury’s and Tesco are dropping prices by as much as 5p per litre as of today, while Asda is knocking 1p off a litre of petrol and up to 2p off diesel.

f34dd tesco petrol

And given that forecourt prices are already at their lowest levels for around 3 years (the average cost of a litre of unleaded is 129p), these fresh price cuts mean we’ll be paying less for our fuel than at any time since 2010.

Petrol price war

The main driver for the price cuts is an attempt by the UK’s major supermarkets to lure us away from discount chains such as Aldi and Lidl – petrol is one of the few effective weapons they have in this ongoing battle.

The result of the Scottish independence referendum has also played its part, however. Since the No vote, the value of the pound has risen against the dollar, meaning the wholesale price of petrol (which is priced in dollars on international markets) has dropped.

The good news for motorists is that these savings are being passed straight on via cheaper prices at the pumps.

Distance/saving equation

If you know a petrol station a few miles from where you live is offering cheaper prices than your local forecourt, it can be tempting to make a trip to fill up.

But there comes a point when the distance involved and the saving available stops it being worthwhile.

You can find out whether that applies in your case using our fuel cost calculator.

Pressure points

It’s not good news for everyone, though, as more price cuts will inevitably put more pressure on independent filling stations, which could well lead to more closures.

Figures from the Petrol Retailers Association have revealed that, over the last 5 years, almost 900 independent filling stations have disappeared from the roadside, more than a third of which are in rural areas.

For more on the plight of independent filling stations, read Kevin’s article Are we running out of petrol stations?

Cutting your fuel consumption

Seeing as we’re going to be paying less for our petrol, now is as good a time as any to increase those savings by making your fuel go further, so here ae some tried and trusted ways to cut your fuel consumption…

  • Drive more considerately – Harsh accelerating and breaking leads to greater fuel consumption, so watch how you drive and pull away slowly and break gradually.

  • Cut your speed – one of the simplest ways to cut your fuel consumption is to cut your speed. For instance, driving at 70mph uses 9% more fuel than driving at 60mph, and 15% more than driving at 50mph.

  • Check your tyres – a drop in tyre pressure of just 0.4 bar, or 6 PSI, can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20%, so check pressures weekly and keep them topped up

  • Don’t drive as much – an obvious one, but cutting out unnecessary journeys can really lead to significant savings.

  • Clear out the clutter – if your car is full of clutter, you’ll increase your fuel consumption by around 1% for every extra 25kg of w7 So clear out that clutter.

  • Cut the air-con – using the air con to keep cool can increase fuel consumption by as much as 25%, so you’re better off driving with the vents open and the windows down. If, however, you’re travelling at speeds of more than 60mph, wind the windows up and put the air-con on as the drag on the car at high speeds uses even more fuel.

2015 Honda CR-V Very first Drive: A New Engine, Grille, and Transmission

e09d2 2015 honda cr v first drive review car and driver photo 638119 s 429x262

Initial Drive Overview

arrow

A new grille, a new direct-injected engine, and a new transmission.

This year, much more than 300,000 folks will sign a sales contract and drive residence in a Honda CR-V. These won’t be fleet buyers wearing shirts that say Hertz or Avis, but retail shoppers presumably wearing more stylish garb. Or maybe not: What they’re all seeking for, after all, is a little, no-hassle SUV that does the job as reliably as a polo shirt.

The new CR-V delivers on that front as well as it ever has. A spacious cabin with a generous back seat and an ample cargo location with a low floor, as well as obtainable 4-wheel drive, draw purchasers in, just as they do in mixed measure for competitors like the Ford Escape, the Toyota RAV4, and the Mazda CX-5. Style does not rule this choice, but each and every little bit aids in this higher-volume market segment. So Honda produced an work to inject more panache into the CR-V for 2015: New headlights, grille, bumpers, and wheels dress up the exterior. The inside becomes a happier place thanks to a couple of soft-touch pieces on the instrument panel, a rear air vent to hold back-seat passengers comfy, and much more sound insulation. The net effect of the exterior changes is a much more high-priced look. Parked subsequent to the 2015 CR-V, last year’s model appears like an exercise in value-cutting. The very same is correct of the updated interior, exactly where a couple of tweaks and a splash of greater trim combine for an completely far more pleasant environment, such as the way in which road noise fades to a murmur.

What makes this refresh more than window-dressing is a new powertrain, shared with the Accord. Judged by output alone, the new direct-injected engine appears like no big deal. The i-VTEC 4-cylinder makes the exact same 185 horsepower as its port-injected predecessor, but the peak comes at 6400 rpm as an alternative of 7000. Torque is up 11 % to 181 lb-ft at 3900 rpm, 400 decrease than prior to. No one particular errors a CR-V for a redline-luring sports vehicle, so extra power at reduced rpm is certainly a good thing. We did enjoy the sound the older engine created as it roared toward redline, but we also wonder how many current owners really rev all the way to the 7000-rpm energy peak on purpose.

Revving to the top of the tach will be far more commonplace in the new version simply because it also borrows the Accord’s CVT automatic. This device replaces the former 5-speed automatic and, as in the Accord, puts a torque converter amongst the transmission and the engine to give the CR-V a normal-feeling takeoff from a cease. Like all CVTs, if you place the transmission in “D” it will hold the engine at a practically continuous rpm below tough acceleration. Abuse the throttle by stomping on it, and the engine will groan loudly at a single note till you ease back on the pedal. The rise and fall of the engine note as it worked through the old model’s 5 ratios wasn’t any quieter, but at least it varied.

Any individual seeking for maximum engine entertainment in a modest SUV should probably look elsewhere: The competition’s multispeed automatics—they variety from 6 to 9 forward ratios—are a greater decision. Couple of owners are likely to maintain the CR-V’s gas pedal floored for lengthy, although. Driven gently as it generally will be, the CR-V snaps forward in quit-and-go and about-town traffic slightly better than final year—credit the newfound torque. And, if you are trundling along, the CVT doesn’t call interest to itself except for a faint whine we heard in between 30 and 40 mph.

A lot more most likely to draw consideration from owners are the improved fuel-economy numbers. The front-drive CR-V’s EPA ratings are up to 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway—a valuable jump over last year’s 23/31. Opting for 4-wheel drive nonetheless charges 1 mpg, the 2015 edition earning 26/33 numbers, up from 22/30.

For the security-conscious, a extensive list of protective gear is now provided on the CR-V. Honda’s camera-primarily based LaneWatch blind-spot-monitoring method is standard on all versions except the base LX. A camera “watches” the passenger-side blind spot and activates when the correct turn signal is flicked, the touch-screen display mounted in the center of the dashboard showing an image of what’s lurking subsequent to you. We’ve not been convinced that this function was needed or useful in other Hondas, like the Civic, but it does function as advertised. The prime Touring trim gives even far more security tech, including adaptive cruise manage, lane-departure warning with lane-maintaining assist, and forward-collision warning with automatic braking.

To assist an actual, engaged driver avoid prospective accidents, each CR-V comes with new chassis settings that include wider wheels, recalibrated springs and shocks, and new front control arms. The brakes are assisted by a larger master cylinder that Honda claims reduces pedal work. Handling is secure and predictable. The CR-V doesn’t drive as sportily as the Mazda CX-5, but it comports itself with a carlike and mature manner. So, basically, it behaves like a smaller sized Odyssey minivan.

You will have to pay a tiny premium for all the modifications. The least pricey CR-V is the $ 24,150 LX, which charges $ 200 much more than last year. The very same enhance applies to the next-rung-up EX, which begins at $ 26,250 and adds the LaneWatch camera, heated cloth seats, a power driver’s seat, a sunroof, 17-inch aluminum wheels, tinted glass, fog lights, and automatic headlamps, amongst other factors. Moving up to the EX-L indicates parting with $ 28,850 but nets leather seats (perforated for ’15), 2-zone automatic climate control, heated exterior mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, roof rails, and SiriusXM radio. At the best of the CR-V pyramid is the new Touring trim that starts at $ 32,350. The Touring comes with the complete complement of electronic security equipment, driver’s seat memory, a energy tailgate, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and a HomeLink programmable door opener. 4-wheel drive fees an additional $ 1250 regardless of trim level.

In a recent comparison test of 6 modest SUVs, we ranked the previous CR-V as the second-best automotive polo shirt. We loved the interior space, the hassle-cost-free practicality, and its quiet manner. We griped about its soft responses and toasterlike design. Honda seems to have heard our complaints. The new a single is quieter, handles much more like a auto, and looks greater each inside and out. Ultimately, it may well not be as a lot enjoyable to drive as the comparison-test winning Mazda CX-5 (which also won a subsequent 3-way shootout), but the CR-V has much more cargo area and fractionally a lot more rear hip area. Sometimes, entertaining takes a back seat to the back seat.

2015 Toyota Yaris 1st Drive: Yes! It is Nevertheless a Vehicle!

First Drive Review

A good car in need of a better powertrain.

Among the more memorable advertising slogans of recent years—at least to us—was the “It’s a car!” tagline that Toyota attached to its 2012 Yaris, which was initially advertised exclusively online. Here was pure truth in advertising, with absolutely zero overstatement. It should have won an award.

At the same time, the sleeping giants that are Toyota’s design and engineering departments were in the midst of crafting effective redesigns of the brand’s core products, including the Avalon, Highlander, and Camry. The humble Yaris eventually came in for its midcycle 2015 refresh, and we were brought to the Big Island of Hawaii to see whether it has been injected with some life or if it’s still, well, just a car.

The design department, for its part, went to freakin’ town on the thing, creating a new cross-your-heart schnoz that looks like a combination of a sports bra and the Darth Vader Hot Wheels. (In Toyota-land, it also shares some influence from the X-Men-tastic new Aygo.) The optics of the rear end have been refined a bit with the addition of amber turn signals in the combination lenses and a little bitty diffuser-type thing in the rear bumper. Yaris SE models get sassy LED running lamps up front, as well as techno-looking black and silver 16-inch wheels. While beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and we expect that the taste police would probably prefer the aesthetics of the outgoing model, credit must be issued to Toyota stylists for not bunting on this refresh.

There wasn’t much to get excited about inside the previous Yaris—we were merely happy to have the gauges moved to their proper place in front of the driver. But for the 2015, Toyota has worked in some additional soft-touch materials on the dash and the doors, added brigh2rk to LE and SE trim levels, given all models a new center console, and beefed up some of the hard plastics that used to flex disconcertingly under slight pressure. All models get a 6.1-inch touch screen for Toyota’s app-based infotainment system, as well as 6 speakers, HD radio, a USB port with iPod control, and Bluetooth phone, voice-recognition, and music-steaming capability. All of this is notable in a class of car where the mere presence of a radio isn’t always guaranteed. Seat fabrics have also taken a step up in quality, but the whole doesn’t feel better than class average unless you spring for the SE model, which gets its own instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and contrast stitching.

Speaking of the SE model, one of those managed a third-place finish in a 6-car subcompact comparison shortly after it was introduced in late 2011. So we generally liked it. For 2015, the SE gets even better thanks to new structural welds, common to all Yaris models, that stiffen the body and in turn allow the suspension to be more responsive. All Yarises also benefit from redesigned and stiffer body bracing, wheels that are wider by half an inch (on L and LE), more noise insulation, and “sport-tuned” electric power steering that delivers actual feel when combined with the SE’s larger 16-inch wheels. We’d prefer more time behind the wheel and the opportunity to hit our skidpad to verify this impression, but our limited driving time in Hawaii seemed to indicate the Yaris (and the SE in particular) is as eager as ever to hit a back road.

The powertrain, unfortunately, hasn’t changed. It’s still the loud, unpleasant 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, a personality-free lump hell-bent on delivering efficiency at the expense of forward thrust. The SE model’s 5-speed manual feels better in action than that of the L—those are the only 2 models in which it’;s available—as it actually lets you know that you’ve slipped the lever into a gate. This is important to know, since you want to be in the absolute right gear to wring any performance out of the 1.5. We will refrain from bagging too hard on the sluggish 4-speed (!) automatic, because, well, the fact that such an outgunned, ancient gearbox is still being installed in new cars in 2015 doesn’;t warrant much additional comment. Save your $ 725 and shift for yourself. Given the carry-over engine and transmissions, 2015 Yaris performance isn’t likely to change much, which means 60 mph in 9 seconds flat with the manual and 10.5 seconds with the slushbox.

The thing about the Yaris is that no matter how frisky its chassis, a powertrain that grows more dated by the day is likely a deal-breaker for many when virtually every one of the Toyota’s competitors—including the Hyundai Accent, the Honda Fit, and the Chevrolet Sonic—has more sophistication underhood and better fuel economy to boot. Then again, we surmise that many customers with fifteen to eighteen grand in their pockets looking for just “a car” will care as much about those cars’ powertrain advantages as they will the T logo that has moved to nest comfortably in the center of the 2015 Yaris’s grille.

The MiWay success story continues with the insurance company receiving top honours in the prestigious Mail & Guardian Top Companies Reputation Index Awards on 26 September 2014. This latest accolade in the short-term insurance category, follows on the back of strong growth and profits posted for the first half of 2014.

MiWay entered the short-term insurance market in 2008 as a greenfields initiative and has grown its client base to over 220,000 with annualised premium income of R1.5bn. Despite this strong growth, the company is achieving loss ratios of below 60% and an impressive net underwriting margin of just over 26% in the first half of this year.  The profit contribution to its parent company, Santam, was close to R50m for the same period.

Founder and CEO of MiWay, René Otto, says he is pleased with what MiWay has achieved in just over 6 years in a very competitive market.  “Our goal is to build a world-class business. Receiving recognition like the M&G TCRI Award serves as encouragement that we are on the right track.  The fact that we are a relatively young company, in a very competitive space, makes this award so much more pleasing. A company’s reputation is after all its most valuable asset.”

Over the last few years, MiWay has scooped numerous accolades including multiple awards in the Deloitte’s Best Company to Work for survey; and best short-term insurer in the Ask Afrika Orange Index Service Awards.

Otto continues to say, “It is easy to grow, but not so easy to grow profitably. If you add to the mix the challenge of building a strong reputation, the task becomes even more challenging. I believe our strong focus on our core company values, plays an important role in bringing these forces together.”

“I am confident that MiWay’s current book, which consists mainly of short-term personal lines business, can continue to grow profitably with a number of new growth initiatives planned for later this year and early 2015,” concludes Otto.

Picking a savings account

16be3 boq2
Each year CANSTAR researches a multitude of savings accounts on the market, to determine which organisations offer outstanding value for Australians. This year CANSTAR is pleased to congratulate BOQ on taking out the Bank of the Year – Savings award for 2014.

CANSTAR caught up with Debra Forster, BOQ Head of Deposits, for some tips on what customers are looking for in a savings account.

Q: BOQ offer a particularly competitive rate on its WebSavings account. Have you seen an increase in the use of online saver accounts (as opposed to term deposits) over the past few years?

While we offer particularly competitive WebSavings Accounts, we believe that our market competitive term deposits continue to offer customers outstanding value for money, particularly for those customers who require rate certainty over a fixed term.   For retirees Term Deposits give peace of mind through a secure income stream in retirement.    Term Deposits are also a great option for first home savers, as funds are locked in and the temptation to dip into the funds is reduced.  However, as interest rates have decreased in line with the RBA cash rate we have noticed a trend towards at-call deposits, which give customers greater flexibility to access funds.

Q: When deciding between a straight online savings account and a bonus saver account, what considerations should customers weigh up?

In forming a cash investment strategy we would suggest that customers consider their need to access funds, versus their need to earn interest and the period of time they are likely to hold the funds in cash investments.  Online Savings Accounts generally provide eligible customers with a short term introductory special rate, which then reverts to a lower variable base rate.   These Introductory Special Rates can be a great option for customers who are looking for a higher return over a short period of time.   On the other hand bonus saver accounts pay bonus interest based on the customer meeting certain monthly criteria.   These accounts can be great for customers who are looking to save and invest money over a longer period of time. Unlike many other Bank’s bonus saver accounts that pay bonus interest in months where customers make no withdrawals and meet certain deposit criteria, our Bonus Interest Savings Account rewards customers with bonus interest provided no more than (1) withdrawal is made during a calendar month.   We believe this unique feature gives our bonus saver customers greater flexibility and choice to access their funds once a month, without losing bonus interest.

Q: I note that BOQ was recently inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

The Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame remembers, recognises and retells the stories of business and individuals who have played a vital role in the state’s business landscape. BOQ was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame to recognise its status as a long-standing institution that has loyally served Queenslanders throughout the state’s history and one that has successfully expanded and adapted to meet customers’ changing needs.

BOQ was established in 1874 as the first permanent building society in Queensland – it was the first bank in Australia to have an interest bearing check account and was also the first to appoint a female branch manager.  Today BOQ is a listed company with a market capitalisation of around $ 4 billion.  It employs more than 2,500 people and has operations throughout Australia.

Tread meticulously – how to take care of your tyres

2780e dead tyres e1411993313288

Dead tyres by vagawi is licensed under BY CC 2.0

You probably don’t regularly check your car tyres.

Well, actually, you might do it with religious fervour for all I know, but my guess would be that you probably don’t.

I mean, even with the best will in the world, it’s going to slip ever further down the to-do list for most of us…

But figures just released by the Department for Transport might just make you change your mind about this particular aspect of vehicle maintenance.

Final third

Did you know, for example, that out of a total of 2,855 casualties caused by defective vehicles in 2013, dangerous tyres were cited as a contributory factor in 968 cases, or one third?

Worse, out of 43 deaths on the road from vehicle defects, 18 were caused by illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres – that’s more than 40%.

Nearly half of the tyre-related casualties were on A-roads and the highest number was recorded in the south east of England, accounting for 23%.

Check mates

The figures are timely because October is Tyre Safety Month, when thousands of garages and tyre retailers across the UK will be offering free tyre safety checks.

So it’s as good a time as any to make sure your tyres are up to scratch. Which means…

  • your tyres should be the correct size and type for your vehicle – check your manual

  • they should also be in good shape, so use your common sense: no tears, gouges, scars, lumps or other characteristics that make you go “What the…?”

  • they should also be pumped up to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure – and checked every couple of weeks. You’ll find the numbers in your manual, and there’ll probably be a chart at the airpump on the forecourt

  • always check the pressure when the tyres are cold and make sure you modify the pressure if you are carrying an unusually heavy load

  • depending on your car, you might also need to adjust your pressure according to the time of year (as air pressure changes according to the ambient temperature)

  • the details of the correct pressure are usually found in the handbook or inside the petrol flap. Alternatively, you can search on websites such as www.kwik-fit.com.

Pressure points

There are several reasons why the correct tyre pressure is important.

First, it can lengthen the life of your tyres, no bad thing when you consider the cost.

Next up the right tyre pressure can also improve road handling and fuel economy.

Get a grip

You then need to get to grips with the tyre tread.

The law requires car drivers to have at least 1.6mm of tread depth on their tyres, although you should ideally replace the tyres before the tread gets too worn down.

A car with a 1.6 mm tread will stop 8 metres after a car with a tread of 3mm travelling at 50 mph in wet weather – and that 8 metres could save a life.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, the organisation behind the October check-up campaign, says: “Driving on safe and legal tyres is important all year round, but especially so as we approach the winter months.

“Without adequate tread depth your tyres will not be able to cope properly on wet roads, and if we have a repeat of last year’s record levels of rainfall, we could well see even more needless tyre-related injuries which could have been easily avoided.”

Run for cover

If you drive with defective tyres, you could invalidate your insurance. It would not then pay out in the event of a claim.

Plus, you risk a fine and penalty points if you don’t look after your tyres. Anyone with defective or illegal tyres can be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

In the worst case scenario, you could end up a court with a possible fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points.

Depth charges

The 20p test is a quick and easy way to check your tyre tread. Simply insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of the tyre. If the outer rim of the 20p coin is obscured, then the tread is above the legal minimum depth.

If you can see the outer edge of the coin, the tyre is possibly unsafe or illegal and should be inspected by a tyre professional immediately.

Spare a thought…

When it comes to your spare tyre, you don’t actually have to carry a one in your car – and if you do, it doesn’t have to meet the legal standards when it is stowed away.

However, if you want the fall-back of using your spare tyre in an emergency, perhaps following a puncture, it’s a good idea to check it regularly so that you know it will be roadworthy if and when you need it.

Some vehicles are fitted with mini spares, which are designed to take up less room in the boot. Beware though, as they are not intended to be driven for long periods or at high speeds.

Seasonal produce

Winter tyres are designed specifically for use in low temperatures and can improve road safety. However, there is no legal requirement to fit winter tyres in the UK.

Snow chains are another option if you live in rural areas. Watch this space for more info on driving in winter over the coming weeks.

Effectively, This Sucks: Porsche 918 Spyder Goes Up in Flames at Toronto Gas Station [Video]

dd445 Screen Shot 2014 09 29 at 12.58.47 PM 626x397

Nicely, damn—what we have right here is a 918 Spyder that went all GT3. Or NSX. Or Gallardo. Or, well, any supercar, because we’re fairly confident “burns to the ground with a fiery incandescence matched only by its capacity to warp faces” is listed among the regular characteristics for something with far more than 475 horsepower.

The 918 observed here is allegedly owned by Canadian investor and Television personality Michael Wekerle. It is said to have gone up when overflowing fuel and its connected vapors were ignited by the hot exhaust. (The pipes point skyward on every single side of the engine cover.)

At 2.2 seconds to 60—which still feels extraordinary to type—the 918 Spyder is the quickest road automobile we’ve ever tested. This one won’t be replicating that feat any time quickly. Or, uh, ever based on the aftermath photos posted to Twitter:

Ezra Dyer: Everybody Please Give a Big Warm Welcome to Me

I have a completely valid driver’;s license. I personal 3 turbochargers. Junior Johnson once mailed me some ham.

Greetings, Earthlings. This is a momentous occasion, my debut column for Automobile and Driver. I told editor-in-chief Eddie Alterman that I want this 1st piece to be a sensation, the magazine equivalent of these Dodge Neon ads that mentioned “Hi.” He replied, “You’re fired.” I’m kidding, of course. I’m only on probation. And frankly I believe that has a lot more to do with a small scenario involving stodgy workplace dress codes and mesh half-shirts.

A little bit about me: I have a totally valid driver’s license. I personal 3 turbochargers. Junior Johnson as soon as mailed me some ham. I put my pants on 1 leg at a time, except when I’m in education for the Globe Speed Dressing Championships—which are held quinquennially in Copenhagen, so I’ll be out for a couple of months in 2017.

This is not my 1st time scrubbing the gunwales on the ol’ word barge, as the saying goes. If you are unfamiliar with my work, then welcome to 2014. Hey, was it cool there? Where? Below the rock you had been living beneath for fairly some time! I’m excited to torment, I imply entertain, a new audience. Grandpa wants to inform his stories to a new household.

Anyway, if you missed the press conference, I’d like to thank the fans in Calgary for a lot of excellent years there, but now I’m excited to bring a championship to New York. These who recently bought a jersey will acquire a coupon great for 15 percent off at licensed retailers, valid via last week.

So what can you expect from this space? Oftentimes this column will pertain to my political ideology. Some of you may possibly ask, “What do your private political beliefs have to do with cars?” And you might have a point, for I am a Whig.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren roadster

The fastest I’ve ever driven was 206 mph in a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition in Dubai. This is even a lot more impressive when you contemplate that I did it without having listening to any Sammy Hagar songs, which are scarce on the dial in the Middle East.

Correct now my household car is a Lincoln MKT EcoBoost, which is very easily the sexiest twin-turbo domestic crossover named for our country’s 16th president. It is white, and I Plasti-Dipped the wheels black. My wife has received 2 compliments on this modification, both of them from girls. As a result proving however once more that if you want to impress the ladies, you have got to remain on prime of the most current trends in do-it-your self car customization.

Although I own a Lincoln, I contemplate myself an automotive omnivore. I’m into everything from IROCs all the way to Z/28s. Whether or not we’re talking an RS or a ZL1, I can appreciate each sort of automobile the planet has to provide. Except Berlinettas. These went downhill soon after they won that prestigious award in ’82, the Makeout magazine Greatest Vehicle for Necking.

Now, in terms of auto testimonials, I want to tell it to you straight. If a vehicle understeers, I’ll say it understeers. If it oversteers, I’ll say it oversteers. If it is neutral, I’ll say it oversteers. And then technical director Don Sherman will gently correct me in his deferential, nurturing way. “Friend,” he’ll say, “even smart and talented drivers like your self occasionally perceive chassis neutrality as oversteer. Chin up, tiger. You are nevertheless wonderful!” Yep, that is how that would go.

Speaking of my new coworkers, I recently identified myself riding on the back of a moped in rural France with executive editor Aaron Robinson. We were both wearing snazzy leather helmets that he described as “made in Korea, DOT-nothing,” checking out some corners at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. When we decided to leave the Arnage corner, Robinson’s 90-cc Honda failed to start. I suggested we push-begin it. “We cannot,” he stated. “I’m operating it total loss.”

2010 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost V-6

I, as well, was at a total loss, even more so when he declared, “Guess we’ll be walking.” Just when I was thinking this was all some sort of sick hazing ritual for new workers, Robinson realized that the Honda wouldn’t start since it wasn’t in neutral. Good news: We weren’t walking. Bad news: I was once once again riding on the back of a moped.

Surviving that experience gave me a newfound appreciation for life and renewed commitment to the enlightened highbrow journalism you have come to expect from this august publication. While I’ve embarked on many an ambitious story, there is significantly left to accomplish: driving a monster truck, carrying out a wheelie with a monster truck, spinning donuts in a monster truck. Yes, most of my career ambitions involve monster trucks.

Right about now, astute readers are most likely thinking: “He said he owns 3 turbochargers. The MKT has 2. Where’s the other turbo? What does it all mean?” Before you quit your job and go reside in a teepee in the ungovernable woods behind Walmart, I’ll tell you that the other turbo is in my Bronco. The turbo is a Garrett, which is appropriate because it is roughly the size of actor Brad Garrett’s head.

Now you might wonder why a Bronco is turbocharged. I assure you, you will locate out in due time. This is just the 1st column. Grandpa has a lot a lot more stories to inform.

Volvo Trucks Makes a Novice Italian Valet’s 1st Day . . . Exciting [Video]

6e463 Volvo FH dual clutch

Nothing at all is real these days, from clickbait stories clogging your Facebook news feed to “reality” tv. Everything’s at least a small bit staged, and it is with that point of view we watched Volvo Trucks’ latest amusing industrial. For a division of Volvo with perhaps the least-fascinating items, the Trucks guys positive know how to score a chuckle from us vehicle guys. A current effort involved Jean-Claude Van Damme carrying out the splits, right after all.

The YouTube clip pits a rookie valet at a casino on the Italian Riviera against a parade of the hottest sports cars, the nervous-searching fellow gulping and awkwardly gaping at the model-grade ladies stepping out from the exotic rides. It all appears to be common initial-day-on-the-job fare . . . till a Volvo semi-truck pulls up to the red carpet.

We don’t ever find out how the valet manages the huge rig, but Volvo ends the clip with the boast that “under the hood, it is a sports car.” You see, the Volvo FH truck is obtainable with I-Shift Dual-Clutch, a heavy-duty dual-clutch automatic transmission. Although it hardly transforms the FH into a Porsche 911 competitor, the dual-clutch does speed up shift times and take away the chore of operating a clutch from the truck-driving expertise. And not possessing to climb the studying curve for a semi-truck manual transmission means that valet kid may possibly truly have been capable to drive the FH. Whether or not he completely decimated every thing in sight was a different story, we’re confident.

Road user pleads for visible and effective traffic enforcement on route between Krugersdorp and Pretoria

ac391 report bad

We would like to share an email to the Arrive Alive website by a concerned road user who regularly travels between Krugersdorp and Pretoria:

” There are dangerous drivers between 05h10 and 07h00 on route between Krugersdorp and Pretoria.

They drive at extremely high speeds, drive up to the cars in front of them until it seems if they are the trailors of the cars (which is not far from the truth – their manners remind me of trailor trash).

If the cars, who are overtaking other cars,  do not brake sharp to switch to the left lane so that the speeder can have the right hand lane all by him- or herself, they pass them unsafely near them in the left hand lane, then they switch sharply to the right hand lane – right in front of the car who were actually the one who did not break the traffic rules.

Then they brake right in front of the driver, who was actually driving at 122km/h a little above the speed limit and drive extremely slowly for a while. The poor driver can not do anything, because there are cars in the left hand line. After a while the bad driver looses interest, or remember that he or she needs to speeds and off they go to find another driver to be intimidated.

We need protection against these traffic offenders. The person iin the wrong is not the one who drives at 122km/h while he or she is overtaking another car. It is the one who drives at such a speed that they catch up with drivers driving at 122km/h, which is already above the speed limit.

If these drivers are not taken off the N14, we are going to have serious accidents on this road, especially near Diepsloot, where pedestrians passes the N14 via foot. It is still very dark, therefore it is impossible to see a pedestrian or any other person/hazard before it is too late while driving at those reckless speeds. It helps on the N14 (behind Centurion) that speed cameras are manned almost always.

c3c27 Road block JMPD Grasmere

Can it please be done on the N14 between Krugersdorp and Pretoria between 05h00 and 09h00 and then again in the afternoons between 14h30 and 18h00? It works on the N1, where drivers obeys the traffic rules because of visible policing.

If it can not be done, please provide us with a website where we can report such drivers without disclosing our own identities. If they are that reckless on the road, and the person whom they have intimidated reports them, i am quite sure they will find and attack them.

By doing so, a data basis can be build up against traffic offenders – and we wash each others hands.

Such a data basis can be used to prove that a driver does it always and that it was not in a moment of madness. It can help the police to get all their information during road blocks. It can be advertised as well that we can report such drivers without revealing our own identities.

I also think we have to make people aware of these dangerous, reckless, speeding drivers. I have reported one on your site today – CT 93 JL GP. This person seems to be aggressive and dangerous and I really do not want to meet him face to face although I was so intimidated by his dangerous overtaking that I took the time to write the report.

803b6 speed camera and stand 1024x768

What we need is basic information – the number of the car should be compulsary, but the colour, make and other detailed fields should not be compulsary to be completed.

I think it would be a great idea to make the following video:

1) car passing another car, a little above the speed limit

2) one coming up at high speed from the back, until too close to the driver

3) Great – now the reckless driver has the attention of the one who is driving in front and being intimidated.

4)  BAd driver passsing on left hand side, too close to the driver he/she wants to intimidate.

5)  BAd driver braking in front of the driver wgo is not in the wrong and who did travel at the speed limit

6)  AHA- moment – BAd driver has the full attention of the alerted driver

7)  Alerted driver see the following detail as clear as crystal – make of the car, registration number, colour

8)  AHA moment – report incident via cell phone or website that needs few information

9)  Traffic police alerted in the nearest town

10) The face of the fool who ensured that all his detail could be remembered because of his own aggressive attitude towards other road users – BEHIND BARS.

11) Alcohol test being done – to proof he/she is drunk or to proof he/she knew what they did

12) The message – if you want to ignore the traffic rules, you have to ensure that you do not offend the other users of the road. Thing is – that is your way of driving, your habit. The possibility that you can have more than one report with regard to your bad driving on one piece of the road- such as the N14 between Krugersdorp and Pretoria (mornings between 05h00 and 09h00) and the other way round (evenings between 14h30 and 18h30), is quite large.

We need to teach bad drivers a lesson – the others who plan carefully, who leave their houses in time and who take the punch for being late due to their own bad time management is fed up with their aggressive use of the raods.

In fact, they are welcome to build their own roads where they can kill themselves due to their bad driving skills.

This site could be perfect for launching such a shortened version to build a data basis of bad drivers.  And it can be very handy when they want to renew their drivers licences. If a lot of people were so offended by their driving that they took the time to write a report, these bad drivers certainly need to be retrained so that they can become responsible users of our roads.”
