Red Bull’s 2015 campaign to unseat Lewis Hamilton is off to a exciting start, even if Daniel Ricciardo’s first win does not count in the official standings.
On Prime Gear final night, the 25-year-old Aussie buckled into the show’s Suzuki Liana to take a run at Hamilton’s record 1:42.9 “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” run.

When he crossed the finish line, it was his name getting elevated to the prime of the leaderboard. Ricciardo ripped through the course in 1:42.2, beating Lewis by a solid 6 tenths of a second. What’s much more, Ricciardo’s time spanked ex-teammate Sebastian Vettel’s by almost 2 seconds, and was a second quicker than Mark Webber, the man he replaced at Red Bull last year. It looked like he had a blast:

Of course, the actual competitors kicks off on March 15th on Ricciardo’s residence turf at the Australian Grand Prix.
There, he’ll have a fresh chance to answer the Leading Gear audience heckler who yelled, “What does the back of Lewis’ auto appear like?”
Ideally, it’d be a smiling, “I wouldn’t know” from the best podium step.
