Question:

I purchased a vehicle of which the previous owner is deceased. I have the papers but no disk. How do I go about getting vehicle on my name. I cannot track down previous owner(deceased) or relatives of which the papers is still on his name.

Answer:

When you say you have the papers, are you referring to the Registration documents? If that is the case and you have the documents supporting the transaction, that is the sale of motor vehicle, you do not need a licence disk.  What is required here is to have the vehicle registered under your name (using the registration certificate), and depending on when the vehicle was bought, you may incur the registration penalties and licensing arrears and penalties, because ownership will be backdated from the time you acquired the vehicle. That is you will be liable for registration and licensing from the time you acquired the vehicle.

Kindly confirm if the papers referred to are the registration documents, that is certificate RC1.

[You only need an original registration certificate and proof of purchase to register and license a motor vehicle on your name.  You will however remain liable for all fees payable from the date of purchase.]
