The Lincoln Lawyer has now become . . . the Lincoln spokesperson? It’s truer than a detective busting buyers in a Dallas club: Matthew McConaughey is the latest celebrity tapped to help Lincoln sell Lincolns, and the automaker has released a preview video of what’s to come from the tie-up. McConaughey is seen cruising in a Lincoln MKC, coolly saying “sometimes you need to go back to actually move forward.” More videos and TV spots are on their way, but for now they’re likely traveling in reverse before being thrust ahead.
Ignoring the language, Lincoln’s new ads hold some hope for success when it comes to attracting young buyers’ attention, as the brand tried to do when it tapped John Slattery from Mad Men to appear on behalf of the MKX crossover. Our only concern is that McConaughey’s backward-before-forward act perhaps too aptly fits Lincoln’s current state of affairs. Despite the new MKC crossover being an attractive and decently driving sign of progress, the MKZ and aging MKS are the chocks keeping Lincoln within the confines of its fancy-Ford parking space, and the brand’s heyday remains firmly in its past.
