The Royal Palace at Hampton Court will play host to the renowned Concours of Elegance this September, when hundreds of historic cars will be displayed on its perfectly manicured grounds.
The Concours d’Elegance (to give it its French name) originated in 18th Century France, with the aristocracy displaying off their decorative horse-drawn carriages every year by parading them around Parisian parks.
It is now one particular of the critical dates of the year on the motoring calendar, as more than 700 of the world’s rarest and historic automobiles go on show to the general public.
The event took place at Windsor Castle in 2012 and at St James’s Park in London in 2013.
Best of the greatest
The Concours of Elegance takes location from September 5-7, but September 6 is the essential date of the weekend, as this is when The Club Trophy 2014 will be presented to the ‘Best of the Best’.
Around 60 of the rarest cars in the world have been invited to participate in the competitors, and over 2-thirds of these will be coming from overseas particularly for the occasion.
Of the crème de la crème, around a third are being shipped more than from the USA, while one more 20 or so are coming from the rest of the world. The remaining third are primarily based in the UK.
Racing pedigree
Automobiles competing for the trophy include a unique Zagato-bodied Jaguar XK140 from 1957, and a 1928 Amilcar C6, which raced in several French Grand Prix in the 1920s and 1930s, such as the 1935 and 1936 ‘Bol d’Or’ races.
2 Maseratis will also be on show, a uncommon MC12 from 2007, and a 3-litre Tipo 8CTF.
The Tipo was driven by Count Felice Trossi, who famously loaned the car to Paul Pietisch for the 1939 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.
A spark plug difficulty put paid to the auto winning the race, even although it was major initially, so it ended up finishing third behind the ‘Silver Arrow’ racers of Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz.
Marques of distinction
Other confirmed entrants incorporate rarely observed models from Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Delage, Ferrari, Hispano-Suiza, Lancia, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Siata, Rolls-Royce and Talbot-Lago.
