Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced right now that it will recall a lot more than 250,000 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups in the U.S. for a problem that can trigger the rear axle to lock up at speed. The concern is limited to model year 2005 trucks constructed amongst January 2004 and August 2005.
The difficulty stems from a rear-axle pinion nut that can perform its way loose, potentially causing the rear axle to lock up with no warning. FCA reports that 3 accidents and a single injury are potentially related to the issue. NHTSA launched an investigation in June after receiving 15 incident complaints, 6 of which occurred at highway speeds with no prior warning of impending issues.
The repair involves installing retaining hardware to make sure the pinion nut holds in place. FCA estimates 256,956 U.S. trucks are impacted, along with 21,779 in Canada and 8802 in Mexico.
